There for a few beers and stepped out into the smoking area, when I tried to get back had been told that the manager had pointed out 4 people who they didn’t want back in, and I was one of them. No explanation why, I’d literally just chatted to the other people outside for the first time and had only had 1 beer. Anyway, avoid. I suspect they don’t want customers of certain demography which was very much the impression the bouncer gave when I asked him why weren’t allowed in. Beer is overpriced here too.

Weekend in Brighton to celebrate our first wedding anniversary. We went looking for somewhere to have a drink and came across the fishbowl. We absolutely loved this place. So relaxing, the staff were very friendly and the food was really nice. Very enjoyable. We had a few drinks including the rosy barb fishbowl and the pirate perch fishbowl. Loads of choice behind the bar as well, old mout cider and some craft beers. We weren't starving so ordered a couple of choices from the dippers menu. Plenty of food and delicious! Will definitely visit again.

After reading good reviews about how relaxed and reasonably priced it was from this site and elsewhere I visited on Saturday night close to eight as it had taken my sister and I time to navigate the Lanes as it darkened. We were met by the stewards outside the door, who while not unpleasant were not friendly either as they requested our ID and ran them through the screen at the side for some time when we were allowed entry in a manner that was more fitting for a nightclub. My sister waited at our table upstairs opposite the fish tank built into the wall and I headed down to order some food and drinks back down at the bar.I asked for a lemonade and a cocktail and was then asked for my ID again after already presenting it at the door to get in, which I did. I was then asked if the cocktail was for the other person and told them no, that it was for myself, feeling like I was being treated as suspect. (My sister and I are in our early to mid-twenties and I usually have no problems being served.) At that point I would have just left but I had already paid for my food order so went back upstairs. The cocktails come in a plastic fish bowl and the one I ordered was nice enough which is the only positive I have. We ordered the sweet potato fries and cod goujons, the fries were chewy and tepid and the cod was dry. I felt uncomfortable and unwelcome for the duration and if I make a return visit to Brighton I wouldn't consider returning here as it ruined what should have been a laid back and relaxed evening out.

Went to the Fishbowl pub in East Street, Brighton today with the family. Outside it said on a board they sold gluten free fish and chips. When I enquired they said it was gluten free batter but cooked in a fryer with everything else. I said well that's not really gluten free then. I was told that It was for people on a gluten free diet. Well that doesn't really help those with a gluten intolerance such as my daughter who suffers from Coeliac disease! The rest of the family ordered food so myself and my daughter sat there with a drink. We didn't miss much tho as everyone thought the fish tasted horrible. As previous reviewers have remarked the tables were sticky and the staff didn't really seem to care too much. Really makes me mad that places seem to find it so difficult to fully cater for gluten free. That means no cross contamination and cooked separately. Don't advertise a gluten free option if you can't fully cater for it!!

On our first visit to Brighton we randomly chose to have a few drinks here. It is a pricey place but for what its worth the experience is great. Personnel is truly welcoming and never forget to smile and joke even when the amount of clients is high. One thing I'd perhaps improve are the toilets - they have to be cleaner and look less shabby. Other than that - highly recommend for a drink in Brighton centre.

I can't comment on the food as my boyfriend and I stumbled on this place on a Friday night for what was supposed to be a quick drink. The atmosphere and, more importantly, the music was so good we stayed for a couple of hours. It's a really small place but I like that. As the name suggests there was a big fishbowl on the barr - the general decor was very nice and homely. Luckily we managed to pilfer two bar stools at the bar - had we not had seats it would have been more uncomfortable as there aren't many places you can stand without getting in the way. The bar staff were very attentive and we got served straight away. The music was brilliant - lots of old school black music (think TLC / Biggy Smalls / Snoop) as each song came on it was a 'I forgot about that song' moment. I would definitely go back, The Fishbowl made for a great unexpected night of drinks and sing along for me and my partner.

The Fishbowl is an intriguing building. Scrubbed pine tables and candles in bottles set a great atmosphere plus the large fish bowl on the bar of course! No, you don't choose your fish from there! It's a typical pub menu and is a student haunt later in the evening but we were there around 7pm and chose fish and chips which were superb served with home made tartare sauce and peas (mushy or minted). I had haddock in a gluten free batter and the chips were excellent. It was so nice to be offered a choice of gluten free products. There are more tables upstairs so although it looks small, there is plenty of room and the toilets were clean which is always a plus although the hand drier was a bit useless. Good selection of wines and beers and excellent service.Make sure you pick an upholstered chair to sit on. Bare wooden ones are a bit hard!

I do not think they were professional as they forgot our orders and would not have realised we had been waiting there for a long while unless if we had not told them (and there weren't many people and we were in the first row of tables by the bar). Also, people who arrived later than us got the same food we had ordered 45min earlier than us. We walked in and thought this is nice atmosphere. The place was called the fishbowl and the menu makes a point of serving fish. They made us pay for are meal and first round before we even sat down you could not open a tab. I got a flat pint of coke which other people have also said on other reviews. The Irish fellor with us sent his pint back saying it tasted like the smell of stale beer. They did give him a replacement. Thee music was playing and it was getting more and more packed. The food took a while and we thought yes this is all going to be nice it must all be cooked fresh. The food came and it looked fabulous we had the fish and chips naturally being in brighton pier we thought we were in for right treat. I started with the chips to save my meat to last. straight away two people With us Said the batter was undercooked and swimming in grease. My friends fish was raw like rubber were the words. I was so hungry I never leave food we had walked all round brighton all day but I lefted that. The food was diabolical a real disapiontment I think the oil it was cooked in was to low why it was so greasy. I felt sick as a dog it was a total burnout. My friend asked a waitresses too look in to it .straight away she said we can give you a free drink this is after a upfront £100 for the food and wine. He persisted a different waiter looked into it. He said the fish was still frozen when cooked that's why is was adisapontment. We thought that's a liability when you specialise in fish. After which my friend got the value of one meal back. I think I was expecting to much from the fishbowl being by the Pier we were meant to eat at the parlm court which closed. You would of thought being by the sea the fish and chips was standard. We didn't needed to pay the tab as it was up front by the way. We left the food and went home hungry.

We were in Brighton with visiting family who were craving some fish and chips. We originally were going to go to the Palm court on the pier but was disappointed to find it closed. After a quick check on Trip advisor we came across the Fishbowl which had a four star rating. The interior is quirky and began to get busy which is always a good sign. When we ordered we had to pay at the same time which should of been a sign of things to come. There were five of us with four of us ordering fish. On arrival the fish looked lovely but we soon discovered that the batter was quite soggy and too thick. One of our party found their fish to be rubbery and was unable to put their knife through it. The first complaint was met with no interest eventually after a second complaint they were give a £10 discount with a admission that the fish probably wasn't defrosted properly! How can a restaurant by the sea sell frozen fish? We were very disappointed with this place and won't be returning such a shame.

I'm not a fussy person, but when it comes to higiene. ..I just don't want waiters or cooks doing what I wouldn't do at home. .Simple as that!I arrived with some friends and a 3 year old girl, we all went upstairs (sticky tables but oh well, I thought.. :/ "Its an english pub). I went down stairs to the bar and the waitress was on her mobile facing clients at the bar texting away... (I'm in no hurry so I dont mind waiting). I asked if we could eat upstairs as it was empty and we Could. So we all came down stairs to request..they asked for bottled coke, but they found it very flat.. which I have to say was flat (although I would have had it anyway), and so they told the waitress and she very kindly changed their drinks and told us she was not going to serve any more (a 10 for those actions! That was a great customer Service..in theory). So we asked for 5 drinks and 3 meals. There was no receipt at any moment...I realised later that none was given. My drink hadnt been served and as my friend had paid for everything together, I didnt want to make them all waste time in finding out if it had been charged for or not, so I paid for mine anyway... as the waitress poured my drink, she grabbed the lemon with her fingers..!!#@!??...and for the first time ever I had to say "no lemon please, not if its served with your fingers and hands like that"...I was shocked.. She didnt say anything. She said it was £2.60 and she actually gave me 20p less of change but I couldnt bother...starting to sum up the experience so far, I was not looking forward to the meal now....and we were actually feeling worried that she would be the one preparing them as it was 5pm and there were hardly any clients.Upstairs 2 of the meals arrived together.. (sigh of relief because a friendly cook brought them). The cook didnt know anything about the 3ed meal that was missing...so one of us got the hamburger when the others had already finished. 2 burgers and 1 cesar salad. I have to say I found the burger meat very nice. My friend had asked for the salad without croutons and it came without bacon and with croutons....but she didnt want to say anything because we were feeling now very annoyed with the Service. The salad was quite scarce and it was the first time I saw a cesar salad with anchovies...So to round up, the waitress did the right thing in changing 2 drinks but she Should be using tongs for ice and lemon (not her hands and fingers), she shouldnt have her mobile on her as she is working, and definitely not have clients waiting in front of her while she texts, she Should give receipts and speak out the change given, and definitely write down any kitchen orders and specify requests. The place had possibly 5 clients other than us at that time, so pieces of advice: Clean the tables properly as soon as you can for example! It was sticky every where. Or you could brush your hair and have it out of your face as you're serving drinks and food! Organize stock in fridges, there are so many things to do in a place like this when you have free time...How can managers allow the use of mobile phones? I didnt see any tongs for the lemon, even near its place! ...well... we wont come back or reccommend it..change waitress and freshen up.Quick note: the cook came out to serve our meals straight to the table and she was very nice ensuring all was ok and apologised for the mistake of the missing meal.

The food we ordered was of high quality and left us feeling full after two courses. We received a warm welcome and service by all members of staff, was always with a smile. More people came and went as time drifted on, which added to the ambience of the venue. Great value for money.

I have always loved the ambience in The Fishbowl however I have to say it does seem to be a little over priced! There is a very good open mic night there every week!

I popped in with my friend for an early evening drink yesterday, I haven't been for a while and usually the place is buzzing. It was empty. I had a warm Tiger beer served in a very dirty glass which they changed. My friend had a glass of red wine and she said it was very weak (?!) we decided to upgrade to their 'expensive' Cabernet and it was so awful it tasted as if it had been uncorked for weeks, it smelt vinegary and was brown not red. We gave up. I stood at the bar for a while as I was going to complain but the bar man (a woman served us originally but disappeared) was also missing so we left. We are local people and it was completely dismal. The general bar area was pretty dirty as well and the drinks were extremely over priced. Shame a few years ago my London friends would meet me here and loved it, very low standards, we wont be visiting again.

I have been living in brighton for years and have always loved the fishbowl as a venue. Their new food menus is amazing. Its clear that they pride themselves highly on the quality of the food and it really shows. I like the fact that you can also now grab a late night snack while out for a drink. I was having a beer in there with some friends and ordered a delicious gourmet burger at about midnight! A brilliant combination :)

Moved to brighton earlier this year and tried many pubs, eventually found the one! The Fishbowl is everything I enjoy in one place. The feeling of an old English pub, great selection of drinks, excellent food at very reasonable prices, loved the background music and the open mic night. Most of all staff that give you a warm welcome and are pleased to serve you. Full marks to the brewery, management and staff that make this place what it is. Have recommended this pub to many people who have all enjoyed their visits. Keep it up!

...but both my husband's and my son's varied, bizarrely, between boiling and literally cold (really not sure how they managed that!). A shame as the pub/café itself is quirky and fun, the lady serving was so nice, and my fish was excellent (and hot all the way through). Both the mushy peas and the minted peas were great, and the chips were seriously good. If we hadn't had that weird hot/cold thing going on I would have given 4 stars.

Recently new management have took over and the changes are very obvious, the biggest change being the menu, it really is amazing, I've eaten there 5 times in the last 2 weeks!!! On Saturday I had the burger, I struggled to not order my usual, the fried chicken, the skins and shrimps, but I'm so glad I did, was by far the best burger I have ever eaten, the home made sauce is unbelievable, got a little kick to it without being over powering, it really compliments the burger, the fish finger sandwich is also really good and the fish is (I'm my opinion) the best in Brighton!!! The atmosphere is really cool to, friendly staff and very chilled out.... You really need to give this place a try

I often forget about the fish bowl as it can often be hit or miss. Popular with the students the Fish bowl isn't huge, but can be a great pub to start off a bit of a pub crawl. I haven't eaten there and to be honest probably wouldn't consider it as somewhere that does food, with so many other great places to eat about. Its worth a pint in my option!

Came here on recommendation by whatpub for their ale and funky fish menu. Ale was local and well kept though short in variety. Fish and chips done in a variety of ways and both ours were very good with very decent portions. Worth a visit to avoid the run of the mill seaside fish and chips you will get elsewhere. Good for a chilled pint too.

1230 pm on a Thursday in Brighton - OK, so maybe not so many tourists around, though it was quite a nice day - but we liked the look so we went inside only to find it was completely empty. The staff didn't seem particularly interested, though they warmed up later, but the food more than made up for any other shortcomings. Three different kinds of fish (which was two more than seemed available in other, more expensive, establishments), several different batters, or you could have a plate with small pieces of fish in each kind, £8.50 for fish and chips and one side. I had the plaice and my friend had the cod, both in traditional batter, with salads. We thought it was very good, and especially liked the chips which were not your average out of the freezer into the fryer type - more like home cooked chips. The salads weren't very exciting, but all in all we though it was good value, it's a nice looking place, and I'd go there again.

It was a soaking wet bank holiday in Brighton, the streets were full of families huddled under umbrellas but no one seemed to be stopping in for possibly the best Fish'n'Chips in the city: they serve fresh fish in a variety of flavoured batters (chilli, garlic etc) with tasty home made dips. The food is brought to you as soon as cooked so the batter was very crisp and the portions were generous enough. All this in a cosy pub like environment - why isn't this place packed?

My girlfriend and I decided to stop at this establishment for lunch on a Tuesday as, from the outside, it seemed to be the only real restaurant in immediate vicinity of the pier that was open at that point. We were slightly set back upon entry, as it appeared not to be a restaurant, but a bar, with only sofas downstairs. We were told, however, that there was seating upstairs; so there we sat. The upstairs floor, like downstairs, looked as if it had not been cleaned in several months aside from the tabletops themselves. Next to our table was, yes, a fish tank, built into the wall: quite probably the best feature of the entire restaurant during our trip.Orders are plaiced at the bar; so to the bar I went, to make the orders. There is a distinct lack of imagination regarding pricing: every dish is exactly the same price. The man taking our orders was not unpleasant also not exactly friendly. The main food was actually really good: both dishes. The chips were much too soft, however, and the peas were average at best. I’m not entirely sure why they bring salt and pepper as condiments when they salt and pepper all of the dishes adequately before serving, but I suppose a little top up doesn’t hurt some. I would recommend the garlic and herb batter myself, however there is a wide range of options to choose from – another fairly good feature of the plaice.

Went there with friends and cannot understand how a pub can charge nearly 20 quid for 4 standard beers and do what appears to be zero work on the premises. Went to the loo upstairs and at all my friends decided it got the title worst loo in brighton. Basin was cracked with hairs stuck on it, one urinal was out of service taped up with a bin bag and the other was only held on by a pipe. Service was slow although not unfriendly, but the pub was very run down and tatty.

Went in for lunch with eight of us and although downstairs it was a bit tight there was room upstairs for us to sit together. Although they did run out of bitter twice they were quick to restock it and the food came with reasonable speed. You select your fish and your batter and sides, which are mainly peas of some description, it comes with chips, they have halloumi but it's pretty much just fish and chips. Good, moist fish, batter and chips crisp not soggy, a little stingy on the tartare sauce but that's my only complaint.

Myself and circa 15 colleagues went to The Fishbowl last night. The mix was 10 males and 5 females. The ages of the group ranged from 20 to 55, but with the majority being 25 to 40. Upon arrival at the bar we noted it was dead, only two customers in the bar. Great we thought, we will definitely get served quickly. However, the doorman (who had let us in) approached us and said that they didn’t allow same sex parties in the bar. When we pointed out the female contingent they said that the rule was actually that no more than groups of four same sex customers were allowed in the bar. All this in multicultural Brighton, where I thought that gender and preference were irrelevant. This was also after a couple of members of our group had bought drinks. Anyway, after being treated rudely by the doorman and bar staff we left and went to another establishment who were more than happy to accept the large amount of money we spent. We had a great eveining. I think the owners of this bar would wince if they had seen the behaviour of their staff. Surely if a nice group of work colleagues come into your bar willing to spend when it’s empty you enjoy their custom? You don’t turn them away to your competitors! Good luck Fishbowl I hope your non-customer strategy works for you. Kind Regards,Another almost-customer

A group of us visited for lunchtime fish and chips. Due to hangovers only one of us could manage a glass of very nice South African Sauvignon Blanc and the others had soft drinks. The fish (haddock) and chips and peas were delicious. The venue itself is relaxed and cosy, full of candles and squishy sofas upstairs, the perfect place to spend the day in getting very merry. The toilets could do with an upgrade and a scrub though.
