Called in for lunch for four people, good food, real ale and excellent service. Reasonable prices too. We will visit again

Small portions off supposedly special menu for my meal. with only reasonable t aste. My wife had a greek salad. It was obvious the chef had never been to Greece. He

Absolutely dreadful meal! Soup was like a bowl of stock cube with cold vegetables floating in it. Served with stale bread. The tarlet was stone cold. Both were returned to the kitchen. Waited another hour for the main courses. Salmon was massively overcooked, accompanied by under cooked potatoes and broccoli. Won't be rushing back.

We visited the Fence Gate last night, it’s a while since we have been but I chose to come here for my birthday meal. It did not disappoint. We sat in the Brasserie at the top, it was a little quiet for a Friday night, but the food was excellent and service really good. We both ordered steaks and they were cooked to perfection. Will definitely be back. Would highly recommend!

A really welcoming establishment, in addition to the varied menu there is also a 'specials board'. My wife and I both had a 'main' and a 'dessert' and we ate every single crumb! It's a 'traditional' restaurant, no 'sticky' tables here, the staff were very pleasant and helpful. We will certainly go again - and again. Large car park.

Visited today with family and friends, 4 of our party ordered the soup and was advised it was Leek and Potato, when it arrived it was cream of cauliflower. 2 of us ordered Roast beef dinner and asked for it not be pink, it was served pink and we couldn’t eat it all. One of our party is terminally unwell and felt warm as it was very busy, after we’d eaten we sat outside with our drinks, it started raining and there was no room to sit in the bar area due to it being extremely busy, we asked staff if they could put an umbrella up for us and was advised no due to it not being sunny, we felt a bit disappointed by this response as we’d spent a lot of money ordering food and drinks for a party of 7.

Visited last night Monday 29th. After a visit a few weeks back, we decided this was going to be our new local and go to for meals out. It was busy outside and quiet inside, so we sat in by the old fireplace. After 2 rounds of drinks at the bar, we told the bar man we were still waiting for our food order to be taken. The staff, even though busy still came in , took  other tables orders that had come in after us, even stood chatting to locals.  We were not happy that we were ignored. Despite clearly having menus on the tables and been seen looking at the menus. We got up and walk out, took our business to the Barley mow, putting £85 into there till instead. Huge shame, foods good. Service on this occasion is diabolical.

Foods ok... But Don't you Dare ask for a coffee After 9.30 pm . The staff look at you in Disgust !!! And you wont get one .......

We took my Mother in Law for a lunch time treat to the Fence gate. It wasn't too busy and we had plenty of choice for tables. Ordered a bottle of wine and told the barman we would be eating and he said I had to pay for the wine at the bar first? We ordered our food, which was relatively quickly served. Her Majesty had the Lamb shoulder and my wife had the Chicken Burger. Both cleared their plates and we're very happy with their food. I ordered the Surf and Turf and opted to pay the extra for Pepper corn sauce with it. It looked very nice when it arrived and I have to admit, it was very tasty. However. Just 4 King Prawns, but they were very nice. My only complaint as such, was the extra charge for Pepper corn sauce, which was quite sparse to say the least. I estimated two table spoons worth. I appreciate not wanting to drown the Surf and Turf, but come on, at least a decent amount please. The waitress was very friendly and good for a bit of banter. All in all a very nice tasty lunch.

Been visiting the Fence Gate over many years. I’m not likely to return after todays experience. Had to wait and eventually look for someone to take our order. Delay of about 30 minutes. Food arrived but server said we had to queue at the bar for drinks as they don’t get drinks. Meal was cold by the time I was served. No salt no sauces no enquiry during our meal. Clearly not enough staff. Poor English spoken by server. £18.50 for Caesar salad outrageous. No anchovies or Parmesan. Just lettuce and a barely cooked chicken in sauce. Just what is your business plan Kevin Berkins!!

Staying locally for our daughter’s 21st we had a meal for 10 booked. The service booking our table & on the night was lovely. We all enjoyed our food & even received a glass of Prosecco each to celebrate the occasion. Staff could not do enough & we enjoyed a drink in the bar prior to sitting down.

Frequent attendees of this establishment but the clientele is becoming increasingly challenging. Today went into the establishment for a drink and the foul language (shouting) was absolutely a disgrace - despite raising with staff nothing was addressed - finished our drinks and left… such a shame

Very disappointing evening.Food quality average and amount minimalistic.Very expensive for what you got.Service was awful and would have been non-existent for desserts and drinks if left to the staff.After we finished our sweets the person in charge of the dining room experience kept coming in and looking at us and making it blatantly obvious he wanted us to leave despite us having drinks to finish and another group also being in there finishing off.Do not ever comment on our dining experience but felt this necessary.Will not be returning.

We ate here for dinner while staying at the Lodge. We had a drink in the bar first which was very busy but the service was good. The bar is dog friendly as well. We had dinner in the restaurant, we were glad we had booked as it was a Saturday night and very busy. The staff were excellent and the food was delicious. The portions were good but not over facing as with some places. This meant we all had room for desserts as well which pleased us greatly. We were not rushed in any way which meant we had a wonderful evening chatting, eating and drinking in the restaurant. Highly recommended.

Booked here with a customer as part of rebuilding a relationship. I guess the appalling service helped as it made us laugh. A Tuesday evening visit. Shown to our table and left with menus and no drinks order for 20 minutes. At that point we went to seek out the chance to place an order to be met abruptly with “we are really busy with Friday night numbers and Tuesday night staff”. If only we’d known we could have saved them the inconvenience of spending our money here. Then when (in the interests of time) we asked to order our food at the same time as our drinks there was a sigh and expression of “well I will need a different pad for that”. Food was OK and I did like my steak strips and prawns in a peppercorn sauce served on triple cooked chips. Sorry to have troubled them.

What a great find ! We stumbled upon this beautiful pub / restaurant absolutely by chance- we initially had lunchtime drinks but the place was so lovely that we went back to our hotel, got changed for dinner and then got a taxi back and had our evening meal there and a taxi back. Nathan , the front of house was wonderful. Funny, professional and very attentive. The food was absolutely delicious and the wine was so reasonably priced it was a pleasure to drink! Our waitress was from Bucharest ( I can’t remember her name), but she was so happy and friendly. The decor is beautiful, the food was gorgeous and the service was excellent. Well done. 5 stars from us. Would highly recommend.

I took six close friends to a Christmas party night on December 22nd 2023 to celebrate my 70th birthday. I paid £46 per head for our six people including myself. The room was nice and the table nicely decorated. The 3 course meal was very good but there was loud music throughout our eating time and we could hardly hear each other talk over the meal. Afterwards the disco was very uninspiring! The music was old fashioned even for our table of 70 year olds!!!! There was only a few people dancing and the atmosphere was lacking with few dancers. I asked if we could update the music and got dolly parton 9 to 5!!! More at home at a country and western night than a disco!!! A bit of "Rasputin "could have maybe set the scene!! A shame really as you only get one 70th!!! With better music the evening could have been great!!!

We went here on a Saturday evening, and to be fair, the place was busy, but that said, we did find the food very overpriced for what you actually received from the last time we visited. The service was hit and miss also has I needed to find someone to take our drink and dessert order because no one came near the table to ask. We left feeling disappointed really with the whole experience.

We have been to the FenceGate numerous times over the years and have always enjoyed excellent food, however, last night was a big disappointment. We sat in the bar area. Two of us ordered the poached salmon sandwich which was ok. Another ordered a starter with some onion rings which he said weren't nice as they were soggy. My husband ordered the Chicken, leek and mushroom pie. We literally waited only 5 minutes for it to arrive. My husbands pie consisted of the filling in a dish with a pie crust over the top and 5 chips. When he opened the pie lid it was like thin soup. He found one piece of chicken with a couple of mushrooms and the rest was just a thin sauce. He told the waitress and she asked if he wanted something else, no apology, my husband was thinking what he would like and after about 30 seconds she said, "I'm waiting". He quickly ordered the mince and onion pie which he said was lovely. There were lots of chips and mushy peas which he had said he didn't want but we let that go. The waitress throughout was hard work as she didn't seem to understand much English and she was very abrupt and quite surly. It certainly wasn't our usual experience of this well established eatery.

Party of nine. Food was excellent and couldn’t fault it. Unfortunately service let the experience down. Young inexperienced staff who seemed to have no direction. No one appeared to be in charge. Long wait for initial drinks order. No one ever came back to offer more drinks during the meal. When we asked they were a bit taken aback. We got the impression they wanted to go home. Poor service from managing staff. Inattentive, ignorant and unprofessional. The Fence Gate has been our family go to place for many years. We arrived at 3.30 on New Years Day and were seated quite quickly, however we weren’t given any children’s menus for our youngsters and assumed they would accommodate smaller potions. After 10mins the waiter came to take our order and we asked for smaller portions, we were told NO. We should be ordering from a child’s menu. Anyway we all ordered and then waited for a very long 45 mins until I chased the staff for our order. I was informed that all the dishes there made fresh from scratch and a waiting time of 45-55 mins was normal……..It then miraculously arrived quickly and we were mob handed with staff. Unfortunately 2 of the meals were cold. I informed the manager and he whisked them away to be replaced, we were told this would take 15 mins. Very confusing!!! Our replacement meals did arrive within 15 mins and to my horror the second attempt at Cheese pie was colder than the first. Quite literally an ice cold pastry bottom, but the pastry on the top was burnt like it had been under a grill. I took the plate directly to the manager and he, asked me, ‘How!!!’….and that he’d witnessed a temperature probe going into pie before it was brought to our table. I felt like he thought I had ‘Freeze Ray Gun’ in my pocket and had purposely made it cold. I felt so disappointed. He then said……..I presume you don’t want anything else then!! So I left the Fence Gate still Hungry. I even had to complain to get the cold meals removed from the bill. The Fence Gate is supposed one of the top restaurants in the area, but cold food poor service is just unacceptable.

This is such a great venue. We returned a few months ago after a negative experience with previous staff had put us off for a bit, and we were welcomed warmly by manager Katherine. After a short but lovely lunch, we made the decision to put The Fence Gate back on our list! We came out for dinner this weekend with friends and I must say, one of the best nights we've had for a long time. The service was just right - attentive and friendly, but not overbearing. I had the Venison which was melt in the mouth, and my husband had the Duo of Duck. It looked good but I didn't get a chance to try any! The wine was free flowing and we had a nice chat with Daniel in the Restaurant - he's a credit to your business. Katherine recognised us from our last visit and came over to say hello which was a lovely touch. We left feeling valued (and a bit tipsy)

Living in the local area and having had previous underwhelming dining experiences we decided to give The Fence Gate another chance (we do have drinks in here and we were enticed by the menu on a previous visit) So an impromptu Tuesday evening dinner out. I had the cheese and onion pie and my partner had the steak and prawn stack and paid a supplement for peppercorn sauce. We had a bottle of NZ Sav Blanc which is good value compared to other establishments in the area. The cheese and onion pie was amazing-full of filling and a huge portion size. The steak and prawns were delicious, well cooked and very tasty. We were waited on by two lovely young ladies who were professional and very endearing. I am pleased that I can write this review and we look forward to our next visit. Well done and keep up the good work.

Called in on spec on a wet Monday lunch with friends and our two dogs. Very friendly lad behind the bar, offered water for the dogs straight away. We ordered a selection of starters and snacks, nothing was too much trouble and the lady who brought our food was friendly too. Our friends were very impressed. Thank you.

We only called in for a drink but I have to say this pub is visually stunning. Covered in ivy and hanging baskets. Excellent choice of beer and lager. It used to have the world record for variety of gins having over 600 different ones.

The place is very pleasant down a side road, I was a bit miffed that we could not have a bar bill for our meal and drinks as we were eating outside, I offered to put a hundred pounds behind the bar but this was declined due to policy. We had a beer here the night before and the portions seemed reasonable but the next day the portions were so much smaller for a XL fish and chips. The food was no more than average and greasy and more expensive in comparison with like pubs in the area (within 3-5 miles), the service was pretty good a smiling waitresses who took our order and was very attentive. The bar staff should really apply a sense of reason if a customer is covering more than the bill before they have declined a request. I wouldn't go there again there are many country pubs around the area with a far better standard of food at cheaper prices.

Fantastic wedding & overnight stay !! Stayed over 1st July for friends wedding and absolutely fantastic experience from start to finish. Met on arrival at the lodge by a super helpful and friendly chap named Callum who couldn’t to enough to help & welcome us.
