Netley Grange closed. It reopened as The Dancing Goose. But that has also now closed. There are plans in place to knock it down and build houses, with a smaller pub to be called Woodies Wine Bar

Went here 1pm today because it was convenient for a beetle drive at Netley Abbey church. We found a notice on the door saying they would cease trading at 5pm and the kitchen would close at 2pm. The menu choice was understandably restricted, no desserts at all, but the chicken tikka masala we had was quite acceptable. The staff were polite and helpful, especially considering they were all about to be redundant! I hope it works out for them.

We popped in for a lunch after watching the grandson in a nativity play. It was not very busy but we noticed the carpet where we sat was covered in dropped food. The seats were well worn and dirty. The food is reasonably priced although the charge for three diet cokes of £7.05 was high. The gents toilet looked like it had not been cleaned properly, a lot of dust on the inside of the toilet door. The play are had a broken gate.

Extremely low quality food. I mean worse than bad.We have just finished a meal in your netley fayre and square restaurant. My family ordered the following. Ultimate sharing platter.Large mixed grillSteak and ale pie with mash Kids double bacon burgerKids sausage and chipsI have to say this is one of the worst meals I have ever eaten out, and I go to family orientated pubs often. By no means am I a food snob.My personal meal (pie and mash) was inedible. When I cut inside the top layer of pastry was mushy and the bottom layer was so hard you couldn't cut through it. The meat inside was 50% fat. The mash that came with the meal was warmed to the end of its life so much that the underneath was burnt onto the plate. The only thing edible on my plate were the peas (difficult to get wrong). The ultimate sharing platter consisted of mainly deep fried products, no problem with that. My problem was that it was over cooked that much you couldn't tell what was a chicken strip, prawn or jalapeno thing as they all looked and tasted the same.....burnt and hard! The meat on my partners mixed grill was disgusting. The quality of the meat you are purchasing is quite disturbing. The chicken was clearly very cheap and nasty. The steak (although cooked to order well) was full of gristle and pretty much inedible also. My children are their meals without much complaint as kids do. I however saw how overcooked the burger was and the beans again were so over warmed they were stuck to the plate. My main concern about all this is that I have booked our Christmas dinner with my whole family here. 9 of us who are potentially going to have an extremely bad Christmas day meal. To be honest I am panicking about it now . Overall absolutely disgusted with the entire meal.

I have to say after reading some of the previous reviews of this place I almot didn't come and try for myself. But we always pass here on way to Royal Victoria Country Park and always want to try it. It is perfect for a family of 5 like we are, Cheap meals and really child friendly. We arrived a little early so the kids played on the boat climbing area before we ate. We didn't bother with wacky warehouse, but the main part where we ate was still child friendly and welcoming to the children. We took advantage of a great offer, 2 main meals, 2 kids meals and a ice crea dessert for £15. Bargain! We enjoyed out chicken tikka masallas and the ids loved their mains. But were really impressed with their ice cream sundae!Food was as expected and great. Staff were friendly. We will definately be back.!

Its hard to know where to start with this place we ordered two mixed grills the food was very average the meat was very dry and the whole thing was not that hot we asked for the steak to be one medium well and one medium they were just dumped on the table. It was a Saturday night and the place was almost deserted it looked tike a certain type of local had taked over the place and everyone else stays away.We then ordered deserts chocolate fudge cake asked for it cold not warm and apple crumble 40 minutes later no deserts asked were it was and another 10 minutes later they arrived chocolate fudge cake warm not as ordered. There was almost no one else eating so I have no idea why there was a such a delay my wife did ask and got no answer. This is one of the worst pubs I have ever visited at 10'oclock there were still young childred in the pub some sitting at the bar we were passing through the area so thank god I will be nowhere near this place in the future.

Popped in for lunch and it wasn't very busy which should have been a clue really. Asked for vegan options. Told there was only chips as other fried products were cooked in the fryer with meat/fish. Spotted jacket potatoes on the menu so asked for one with beans and salad, but there were none available, which I found surprising for lunchtime. Opted for chips and beans. Beans were cold. Chips luke warm. My friend had the all day breakfast (with Luke warm chips and cold beans). She wasn't impressed either. Most places cater for vegans nowadays, but this was pretty uninspiring. Also, items shouldn't be marked as even Vegetarian on the menu if they are cooked in with meat/fish. Especially as fish is a common allergen. Oh, and I stuck to the bar when I leant on it as it was so sticky.

I refused to eat it and sent it back, thought maybe the waitresses would have spotted that it doesn't look good enough to serve. Didn't expect much as I wouldn't normally go to this chain but after a hot day out we just wanted to eat "anything". I had the Chicken Wings starter, they were crispy but succulent - perfectly cooked, followed by the Larger All Day Breakfast, which was not greasy, has browns were cooked to perfection. My girlfriend had the Liver pate starter followed by the mini mixed grill (chicken was a bit bland but for the price it was ok). The staff were friendly and accommodating. A little confusion over the new menu but the staff quickly resolved things and were attentive. I wasn't expecting this place to be anything special but I really can't complain. We sat outside the front with our dog, one of the waitresses even asked if we needed water for the dog. I was pleasantly surprised at the quality vs price for the whole experience. Both meals (Starters, Mains & 2 Pints) came to less than what we would normally pay for a starter and main for one person. Would definitely visit again. Keep it up!

We booked a table online asking to sit near the Wacky warehouse. We drove over half an hour because we really wanted a pub with an indoor soft play. When we got here the soft play was closed and we were told there was an outdoor play ... but it stank as there weee so many smokers. There was also a huge argument between a group of people that resulted in a load of swearing and screaming and someone driving off like an idiot across the car park (I obviously know the pub have no control over this but it explains why we didn't stay outside) The staff were nice but no one really seemed in charged. No one seemed to know we had booked and it took three staff 20 minutes to find us a table in an almost empty pub. We were finally seated in a booth in part of the restaurant that had been "reserved" seemingly for no one. The food was ok. The fake cheese sauce on the nachos spoiled it slightly but the gammon was excellent. The children's pizza was a frozen microwave pizza and congealed quite quickly. The plates the kids meals were on were so hot that Waitress (who was lovely) burnt her hands through the serving cloth. They were far too hot to put a toddlers meal on! The food took a while to arrive (which seemed even longer with two irate children who had been promised soft play after a very long car journey). We had to chase the deserts a few times ... by the time they arrived it was after 8.30 and everyone had had enough. We left quickly after they arrived. We were really disappointed as this was not the experience we were expecting after reading the website. All the advertisements for this pub stated that it had the Wacky Warehouse and was child friendly - we even mentioned in our booking that we wanted to use the soft play. We booked at 8am this morning ... it would have been nice if someone could have let us know that it wasn't open at some point during the day - this was not a fun family dinner!

Poor food, poor service and it wasn't busy so that can't be the reason. When we arrived there was a biggish group outside but only one or two other tables occupied indoors. We went to order our food at the bar as another 2 came up to order. There was only one person behind the bar doing food and drink orders. One member of staff having a social chit chat with some other customers . The bar person was taking the big group order so the rest of us were waiting. Some one asked if they had more staff which wasn't responded to meanwhile the other staff member carried on his with his chat. We were told there would be a half hour wait for food! My jacket potato arrived within 10 mins. It was hard in the middle, the prawns were tasteless and not a great deal of them. The other 3 meals arrived as I was finishing mine. Considering it wasn't busy they had run out of plain chicken so the chicken skewer had to have southern fried chicken which were in fact chicken nuggets and were dry and the lemon and parsley rice which accompanied it was severely lacking in any sign of lemon or parsley it was just rice. The chicken nuggets on the childs meal were so dry they weren't eaten and the lasagne was dried up and not good. Obviously done by a 'ping chef' and not value for money. The indoor play area you had to pay for- very unfamily friendly! I would not return even for coffee as the staff didn't seem to care about people waiting and the food was NOT good. Well below average for simple run of the mill pub grub.

Visited the restaurant recently with my partner, the place wasn't busy at all, we were maybe one of about 3 other small groups around... we ordered nachos to share as a starter and then he had the scampi, and I had New Yorker chicken. At first look it looked nice inside, well decorated, up to date furnishings ect.. But then we noticed that not one table around us was up to standard. Tables were left uncleared for the entirety of our visit, our table had no cutlery, other tables no menus, some were cleared but had visible stickiness from drinks and crumbs from previous diners. Also the staff were scruffy, there were no clear uniforms which I think would instantly add some class to the place, and the staff were having their own conversations at the bar when there was clearly work to be done. We went up and ordered food and drinks, fine. Then our food arrived, no complaints about the nachos, but I was missing an entire chicken breast from my meal, and my partner was missing several pieces of scampi and onion rings from his meal. We told the waitress and shortly after the chef brought out what was missing and piled it onto our plates with our own cutlery instead of what I think would've been more polite to just put the plate on the table for us to put it onto our own plates. We had to scout around for our own cutlery, but all in all the meal tasted good! It seemed good quality, the chicken seemed a little chewy but other than that, no issues. Until we got home. My partner started complaining of a strange stomach ache and spent most of the evening hunched over on the sofa, i felt fine until I woke up in the middle of the night and had to run to the bathroom to be sick! (Sorry for the TMI) I spent the rest of the night in cold sweats with a bucket next to me. It's a real shame because it's a great location, lovely building, and a brilliant menu with a lot of variety. I think with new management/ staffing it could really bring the place to life! Until I hear of this happening, I can't see myself returning.

But it took a further 6 or 7 minutes to get a knife and fork each! That is not a typing error, seriously, at least another 6 or 7 minutes and after asking two different waitresses! While our food went cold.As for the food, well I can only describe the lasagne as being the equivalent of a basic economy ready meal in a supermarket!! You know the type, mainly sauce and not much else! The cheap and cheerful rubbish! As for the meat content, quite frankly it was a joke! The rump steak was dry and the chicken skewers were cold and also dry.The quality of the food was dreadul. It's not value for money. Please don't waste your time and money. I'll never visit a Fayre & Square restaurant again. I wrongly assumed it would be of a similar quality as the Harvester or the Wetherspoons, but despite the prices being similar, it's not!!! Terrible terrible terrible!!

Came here for Sunday lunch with family, we were told when we arrived there would be an hours wait for food which looked understandable as the pub was very busy and once we were settled with our drinks we didn't mind. Our waitress Louise came over with some balloons for our children and collected some colouring bits too for them to keep them entertained while the outside play area was closed off for repairs, which they were delighted with! She also delivered our food to us and made sure everything was okay after having to wait the time we did but the food was lovely! The only issue we had with the food was that I thought my daughters lasagne came with chips instead of salad (my mistake!) but Louise apologised and explained it doesn't come with it anymore but she popped back a minute later with a small portion to go with it! Great to see such fab customer service with a smile on a busy day. Great size portions and excellent value for money. I'd visited on a previous occasion a few months back which was not so good so it was on a whim we decided to try it again after hearing the new menu. Looking forward to seeing the refurb we were told about after mentioning the pub could do with some tlc. Will definitely be visiting again and recommending! Nice to see the pub on the rise again!

We booked a Sunday lunchtime meal for over 12 people so were asked to pre-order food although new menus were about to come out. Everyone made their choice from the website, which said 'new menu' and we collated the order (not easy as some people live away and have busy schedules). We were then told that some choices were no longer available on the real 'new menu' (that on the website was an old 'new menu'). Despite pre-ordering we had a 30 min wait for the meals. We had hoped that the children with us could use the indoor play zone, but having paid the children had to wait to go in as it was being used for a party. The outdoor play frame was closed because of damage. On a positive, when they arrived the meals were served at the same time, were well cooked and hot. But no lemonade or coke on tap!

Amazing!! Talk about going above and beyond. I never thought this sort or service still existed!! Something to recognise as Mandie deserves to be applauded. We came here as we were given a voucher, even though we weren't keen on the place due to previous visits. You always have to queue for ages to be served, as there never seems to be enough people on the bar. When we did order, I asked for our table to be wiped clean, but this never happened! It was a quiet evening but after 45 minutes we were told there was a biting a delay as a table of 11 had ordered just before us....I don't know how long before us they did order because as our food finally did arrive they were leaving, it took 1 hour and 1 minute for our food to arrive, it everyone's meal looked like a horrendously presented microwave meal, it was wholly unappetising. It took so long we didn't bother with pudding which disappointed one of my kids, the other was nearly asleep, we'd waited that long!We didn't bother to complain as the staff there looked utterly not bothered about the standards of the pub, so we snuck off and vowed never to go in this place again. All of this I must add is a real shame as a few years ago it was a lovely pub, it has so much potential, it just needs the right staff with the right attitude to sort it out....its just too late for us I'm afraid

Upon arriving our table was sticky and full of etched graffitiConsidering the pub was not at all full when we arrived and seemed to be a good number of staff rushing around. The starter took over half and hour to arrive and quality of it was poor!It was then an a hour before our main course, during so we watched staff dropping food and not picking it back up, spillage that wasnt cleaned up despite them knowing about it and new customers arriving being told there was a 45min wait and not being happy that not all the choices were available on the menu that day. At last main arrived tho nothing to get excited about, the burger was well overcooked, hair on the fries, vegetables were bland and made the other part of meal soggy due to too much water and childs pizza was obviously a microwave one. By that time we had seen enough to attempt to eat and just want to leave! Glad this is the once and only time because certainly wouldnt be returning. We had already reviewed another whacky warehouse close by however avoided that due to bad reviews, thankfully there was a Mcdonalds near by to re fuel!!

The experience started when we sat down at our sticky table and perused the sticky menu. I ordered roast chicken. When it came, a third of the plate was occupied by mashed potato (on a roast???) there was a chicken breast and thigh, a mush of vegetables and a few roast potatoes. The gravy was obviously from granules as you could see the lumps where it hadn't been stirred thoroughly. The chicken smelt and tasted funny so I decided not to eat it. Couldn't face the mash either, so was pretty unimpressed. When I told the waitress that I thought the chicken was off, she didn't know what to do. (Didn't care much either). My husband had the roast lamb. It was too greasy to eat and he couldn't stomach the mash either. My son had chicken nuggets. These came with half a dozen chips and carrots that looked like Noah had dug them up. Overall totally unimpressed. The place is dirty, the food dreadful and the waiting staff indifferent.

We came for a family celebration and ordered food and drinks at the same time. We waited an hour and had all finished our drinks before the food came. I did complain about the delay in food and they did apologise saying they were down to one "chef". My wife and mother in law had the lasagna with chips, the lasagna was burnt and the chips were rock hard. I had the ribs and to be fair they were ok but again the chips were like pebbles. My father in law had the steak and had asked for medium rare, it was well over well done and tough as an old boot. We'll never return, there was a note on the door as we left there was a delay in food but it wasn't there when we arrived. Terrible food, terrible delay and £50 well over priced.

Only disappointment was being told that they are closing for refurbishment at the end of August and re-opening as a Hungry House. Really gutted about this. I love Fayre and Square and this one is the best. Diarised another visit before this happens. Heather, our waitress was exceptional. The Netley Grange is a sprawling modern barn type building in a fairly isolated spot on a fast road about half a mile from Netley Abbey. Acquired by Greene King when they purchased the Spirit Group, the brand owner of Fayre & Square, the pub serves Greene King IPA as its only cask beer. The target clientèle is working class families, and it succeeds in attracting them, both the good and the bad. It is a roomy and attractive building, with a pleasant seating area around the bar, and a smaller seating area in the attic of the steeply pitched roof. There is also seating outside, some in a landscaped garden, and some by the road and car park, and by a useful, though limited, play area. There is an additional room just off the main bar, which is cramped but popular. In addition there is a function room which can be hired, and a soft play area, Wacky Warehouse, at the back, which is free during the week if you spend £10 or more in the pub. As the soft play area is accessed separately from the pub it's not clear how this works unless people eat first, and then the children go play in the Warehouse. There is a down to earth atmosphere, with relaxed and friendly staff, though it's not clear to those unfamiliar with the pub how everything operates. Those sitting outside do not have menus, so you have to find those yourself, and on asking the staff, this is done by taking one from an unoccupied inside table. Tables inside have knives and forks and condiments, tables outside do not, so, again, these have to be taken from an unoccupied table otherwise your food is brought to you and left in front of you with no means by which to eat it. It's not clear what happens on busy days when all inside tables are occupied. The seating area near the playground is very popular, and families will turn up with their own picnics to occupy these tables. They are also popular with smokers. Some families do not supervise their children closely, so you have boys kicking footballs against the car park fence, with balls sometimes missing and landing on or near the tables. You have children hurting themselves and left to cry for long periods. Sitting near the playground is not advised, especially as the seating area appears to be rarely tidied or cleaned. As with some other Greene King family pubs we have encountered, the staff can struggle and make mistakes. One family during our visit waited over an hour for their meal to be served, and were told at the last minute that some items would be missing. The family at this point were clearly at the end of their tether as they had a toddler who was very tired and hungry and making quite a racket. We can see that on the right day, and sitting in the right place this can be quite an acceptable family pub, but we can also see that sitting in the wrong place or going at the wrong time the experience could be quite unpleasant. We had the 2 for £10 deal, which was excellent value. We had the all day veggie breakfast, and it was very acceptable, with quorn sausages. Our daughter had a kids meal which she loved, especially the make your own (unhealthy!) pancake (lots of sweets!).

You don't expect fine dining and five star service when you visit a Fayre & Square but this was one of the poorest experiences we've had eating out for quite a while. After a family day out with young children, this ought to have been the perfect end; a pub with families and children as its target customers. We should have known what it was like when, on a reasonably bright, dry Saturday night the car park was virtually empty when most similar pubs are heaving. It was very quiet inside and even quieter when we left. Some food was ok, my chicken burger was acceptable, but some of the others in our party complained of cold food and there were delays in completing the order. Some, the kids mainly, wanted desserts and despite it being virtually deserted, we waited an age for them and even had to chase them up. The staff though were all gathered at the bar chatting. They had no one to serve after all.Tatty menus, Tables left uncleared, ours was only partially cleared and we had to ask for the rest of the plates to be taken, toilets with no paper and a disabled toilet/baby changing room with a broken lock that needed opening with a knife! The pub is in a decent location and a good manager would make a fortune. Awful. No excuse for it and Fayre & Square ought to be ashamed of themselves. Won't be returning.

We were staying near Southampton with some friends and their grandson and he had been promised a "pub lunch" (he is five years old). Looked for local eateries and even though the reviews were not very good we decided to give the Fayre and Square a try.We were very surprised when we arrived in the large car park on a Saturday lunchtime in the school holidays to see it virtually empty and sent our friend to see if it was open - it was. There were only a few people eating and drinking so we had a good choice of where to sit. The ordering process was efficient and food was delivered to our table within 10-15mins. We were disappointed that so early in the afternoon, one of the requested dishes was already unavailable!!!The ordered dishes ranged from fish and chips, burger, gammon, scampi and the kids meal. The food was well presented, good portions, hot and very tasty. This ain't no gastro pub and one shouldn't expect cordon bleu restaurant food, it is pub grub that is well priced and very acceptable. If it wasn't for the grandson we would have gone into a more fancy pub, paid twice as much and not necessarily better quality. However, the grandson was happy with his meal as were the adults so no complaints here. The staff were very polite, efficient and helpful. The only reason I have knocked a star off is that the building itself could do with sprucing up and the toilets certainly need some attention.

Came here May bank holiday weekend for a family lunch. I was surprised at how empty the place was for what should have been one of the busier days for them, Sunday lunch time. We arrived and found a table outside. After placing our order we were constantly interrupted by the staff coming over to us with random plates of food asking if we had ordered this. Each time we said no and 30mins in startered to wonder when our food would arrive. Finally after 45 mins my partner went to go ask what the hold up was. The lady behind the bar was quite rude to him and he was more or less told to just go back to the table and wait.An hour passed before our food eventually arrived. The food was terrible. My partner and my mother both had hair in their food. My partner went and got a refund for his food straight away. He declined a replacement meal as he had waited so long he decided he would eat back at home. My mother then discovered an eyelash on her egg. By this point people on neighbouring tables were complaining that ther food was taking too long to arrive too. I decided enough was enough and went to speak to the lady behind the bar. When I explained to her about the eyelash her reply was "well that's a new one" I asked her what her problem was and that ther was no need for such an attitude. She said she didn't think she had one. At this point a man stood at the bar told her that her attitude was disgusting and that she needed a lesson in customer service. She then said "suppose you want a refund then" and I said yes!I've visited this place many times over the years and have slowly seen it decline. The toilets are disgusting and I couldn't wait to leave. My daughter was refused access to the play area as we had not booked a table and were walk in customers. I had never heard of this policy before and this was definetly not the case when we visited a few months back.I will certainly not be returning. The staff are scruffy and unhelpful. The food terrible and from what one of the bar staff had told me the place does seem to be in a downward spiral. The manager had walked out on them on Friday and they have had 6 managers come and go since Christmas. How they are still open is beyond me. Save your money and go somewhere else instead.

Decided to have a family lunch as our daughter is travelling to Turkey on holiday & this would be the last chance to see her until she returns. This is not our first visit but have noticed a decline over the last 12 months from enjoying our visits to on this occasion requesting a refund. The exterior of the building gives an impression of neglect which is mirrored on the inside, we sat down at an empty table, viewed the menu & attempted to place our order only to be informed that two of the items were unavailable not a problem & quickly changed to what was available ordered drinks paid & sat down.Thirty five minutes later & no sign of our order so approached the bar to cancel & received a full refund. At present I would suggest that first impressions really matter at this establishment & I cannot see myself, family or friends returning unless there are changes.

My friend had organized her birthday for yesterday from start to finish it was an utter disaster. We had 25 people for the celebration and menu orders were given to the pub 3 days prior as requested. Firstly my red wine ordered at only 3pm there was no wine glasses great start. Should have guessed it could only get worse. Starters came out there was only about 7/8 orders for this only to be told some were off due to no prawns would they like to order something else !! Why were we not told as soon as we arrived?? Mains came a bit later it took them from start to finish nearly one and half hours to serve all meals. Yet again as they started to serve the first two only to be told some items not available can you order something else !! My meal came over an hour later after my husbands. Food cold, wrong orders, burnt what else can I say. Puddings the same , items off menu no cutlery if you were lucky enough to get a pud but hey who would think you would need a spoon. Fayre and Square as a company should be totally ashamed of themselves as this continues to be truly terrible here and at another pub in Ower. This is not a one off if you read previous reviews. I can only say thank goodness that as a group we were great at laughing it off for the sake of our friend and we enjoyed each others company. But you are a total embarrassment if you call yourselves a business. Oh yes kitchen was then closed at about 4.30/5.00 for anymore order's for rest of the evening!!!

It was horrendous! My friend's birthday was ruined. My friend had pre-ordered the meals because there were 24 of us. This however, didn't make a bit of difference as food came out wrong/intermittent and even a couple of hours later!Starters, prawns were off, so people had to choose something else, I've got to say this was to my and my fella's benefit because we ate the spare one. Regarding the main courses, sauces were missing, salmon was off and no one ate at the same time, the last two coming after everyone else had finished! It was a disaster and come to dessert it was the same story, chocolate fudge cake was not available, people who had ordered crumble had to choose between them who was having the last two pieces of one and the 'new' one. To add there was no sparkling wine, the rose I chose was not on the menu, so I had to ask the price before purchasing and my fella managed to buy a couple of Becks Blue before they ran out, so the drink situation was just as dire.
