Pleased we booked in advance it was a busy Friday night - really good service and very knowledgeable staff - drinks came out quick and the food was super tasty - great for coeliacs and had a the gluten free beer too - highly recommend

Never been before and burgers not normally my thing, but a really good choice for lunch. We all ordered the light (one patty) meals with chips or waffles. Really tasty and just the right size - clean plates at the end. We were looked after very well and had a quiet space where we could talk and park our buggy. Would definitely recommend.

Fabulous food in a friendly and quirky atmosphere. Knowledgeable and amiable staff, Poppy and Evie looked after us brilliantly, with perfect recommendations of accompaniments. The PB & JJ burger was amazing!

Food came out raw, like properly bleeding over the plate raw. Returned it for it to come fully cooked according to the waitress the burgers are probed for temperature and sent out and if you want it well-done you have to ask, however at no point was that made clear. Me and my partner both had burgers and his came cooked so the probe thing seems a bit sketchy. When the burger was sent back, one of the waiters had spoken very loudly "if she's not having it I will". Very aware that this practise has been known to happen but to announce to the restaurant is a bit much. Ordered burgers that come with a free side and the waiter asked what free side we wanted he didn't mention the one we picked came with a £2 extra charge that wasn't overly clear from the menu. Overall disappointing visit and felt like we were fleeced for money because they were having a slow night

We came across this place whilst out wandering for somewhere for dinner on our first night in York and we were so happy we did! We were warmly welcomed by staff immediately and seated, we had our drinks order taken my husband had a can of Camden hells and I had a pint of Coke Zero, they came very quickly we then had the difficult choice of choosing what to have from the extensive menu. I had a fat hippo burger with bacon, cheese and onion rings and my husband had the semi parmed life burger. You could choose your own side I had fries and he had tater tots. The portions were very generous and the food was hot and delicious! We really enjoyed it! The milkshakes also looked amazing but we couldn’t manage one! Very quick service and attentive staff! Our entire bill came to £38 which is great for good quality food in a city centre! The only small thing that I feel could be changed is the draft in the room we were in which was behind the main entrance to the venue, it was quite cold in that room but I just kept my jumper on. Overall we would 100% recommend a visit

Burgers were amazing! Good choice of rock music in the restaurant, and not too loud so we could still have a conversation. Only thing I’d say is as the burgers come with a ‘free side’, I’d rather have the option to pay less and not have a side as the burger was filling enough on its own, I don’t care that much for chips or salad.

Walk in visit on a Saturday evening. Requested a few minutes to peruse the menu. After 5 minutes or so and waving at the waiting staff who was too engrossed in what their colleague was doing to show any ounce of customer service, we were served. First fail, option of additional salad if bread wasn't required as other establishments do. Second, request for two half portions of wings of differing flavours not actioned despite confirming twice with the waitress it could be done. Then epic fail - raw wings!! Notified the waitress of this and advise that we wanted to cancel our order. I'll get the manager was the response. The 'manager' came, did we want another starter? No, we want to cancel our mains and leave after paying for drinks. Off they went for the bill or so we thought. After a wait went to the bar and spotted said manager serving other customers. Asked for the drinks bill and surprised we were charged no gestures of good will at the Fat Hippo. There's a reason we avoid chain restaurants, but needs must when you've made an ad hoc visit to York. Unsurprisingly, we won't be visiting again or recommending!

The food here is lovely, chips a little bit too spicy for my liking but my husband couldn’t get enough of them. Burgers were cooked perfectly and staff were lovely. The restaurant itself was very cold, however, which made us want to leave quicker than we would have liked to unfortunately

Had quite a strange experience tonight. When we arrived and ordered everything was fine. Food arrived quickly and we enjoyed it. However, after we had eaten the waitress came over to clear the food and took not only our empty plates but also our drinks that were still half full. We didn’t say anything because she left too quickly to give us chance. Approximately 2 minutes after the table had been cleared we were asked us if we wanted the bill. We had only been in the restaurant for 45 minutes and felt like we were being rushed out. Although we enjoyed the food the service left much to be desired. We ended up leaving feeling uncomfortable and not very happy after paying £10 for a drink that we only got to drink half of.

I took my mum & brother to York as they live down South, and they loved it! We picked Fat Hippo for Lunch and the food was lovely. I have never eat here so it was a spontaneous pick. Me and mum had 2 of the spicy chicken burgers off the fast burger lunch menu which came with chips, and my brother got a double chicken burger off the normal menu. Only difference between lunch & dinner burgers is the number of patties you get (lunch 1, dinner 2). Even the lunch burgers were huge despite it being a smaller version of the dinner menu. We would have liked the spicy chicken burger to be a bit spicer, as we couldn't really taste the sauce even though it was doused in it, but we love spicy food so maybe it was our intolerance levels. Brother had a mars milkshake, and it was huge! Would recommended getting it. Bill was cheap, and would definitely come here again.

We ordered 2 burgers on deliveroo. They were cold when the order arrived and really small, nothing compared to the photos on the page. Fake marketing

Absolutely belting. Perfectly cooked burgers with decent amount of toppings. The sides were very nice too. Excellent service.

Me and my daughter have wanted to try here for a while,we had tickets for the theatre so we decided to come here first. We was seated upstairs and it was freezing,could do with cranking up the heating. We was told no ice cream,milkshakes and only regular fries was available. We both ordered the American burger it came and the chips were cold,half way through our burgers they was both massively undercooked and still pink in the middle We left our cold chips and most of our burgers. Half way through our theatre show we both started to feel unwell. We only just made it home before our body fluids erupted. Can safely say I won't be going back. I'll stick to Macdonald's from now and a hell of a lot cheaper

Could make better at home, only good thing was the starters. Burgers which they pride themselves on are absolutely covered in grease and the chicken is fatty and disgusting, do not get the chicken burger!! We also shared the beef burger which was just average, better at maccies, don’t waste your money. We waited an hour for mains and was left so disappointed and then they have the face on when you select “no tip” on their card reader, sorry but have you tasted the food? And do you really think your service was deserving of a tip? I wouldn’t be expecting one if that was the rubbish I serve

Visited with a few work colleagues, and I was amazed by the quality of the food. The best burger I have eaten in a long time. The service was brilliant and we all really enjoyed it. Highly recommended

As a family of four we came here for lunch and all of us ordered the Fast Hippo lunch deal for GBP 8,50. All burgers were delicious and came with a toasted brioche bun. The price is great and the food is much better than in one of the american fast food chains like M…… We would come again.
