Fat Hippo Durham in County Durham

Food tasted ok, but part of the burger was gooey and actually raw so ate around it. Waiter wasn't there at the time for me to show someone. Told staff before we left and she undermined my comment saying "oh so it was a bit pink, we'll let the chef know" ermm no I'm not talking rare it was raw😂then gave me a dry sorry and no kinda partial refund. I know it's living costs but what happened to professionalism.

got a little hippo burger and a butterbeer shake, absolutely love my burger!! every bite is so flavourful🤤🤤 love the milkshake as well, i really recommend it if you got a sweet tooth 🤭🤩 the staff was super friendly and accommodating as well, really an out of this world level service, they were so thoughtful and pleasant 🫶🏻🫶🏻 price wise, it is definitely worth it 👍🏻

Great first time experience in Durham and Nicola was a great host

The food was nice, particularly the chicken burger - however one of the beef burgers was raw in middle! Whilst likely accidental, it is worrying as I could have easily gotten food poisoning if I didn’t notice.

Went to Durham with family and as soon as we walked in no wait time for a table it got cleaned instantly the food is excellent and the milkshake's are delicious would recommend If you like burgers and wanting food.

First time coming to Fat Hippo and made welcome by the friendly service and fast service. Dan was very helpful and friendly. We will be back again soon

After a few positive visits in the past, we chose to eat here today but left feeling very disappointed due to a number of things. The food arrived extremely quickly, which to us meant it wasn’t freshly cooked and this showed as chips were overcooked and had clearly been standing for a while as we couldn’t even stab them with a fork!! They were rock hard and inedible. The same chips were meant to be ‘hand cut’ but were exactly the same as the fries and when we questioned this we were shot down and told they were in fact hand cut. One of our burgers had an item missing from it and when we questioned this staff tried to brush it off until we physically opened the burger to show them that it was missing. They did bring the missing item, but constructing my own burger was not what I payed for. The overall service was not friendly or professional and we were not asked once if everything was okay with our food, which is ironic, because it was not okay and we would have shared this if asked. So trying to be polite we ended up quickly leaving, wishing we had just gone to a cheaper and more reliable burger place and will definitely not be returning.

Food fantastic, staff helpful when we had a buggy and there were also other buggies in. However the booth we were in was so tight I felt a little uncomfortable.

The burger tastes good with generous portion. But the chips and onion rings are greasy.

Excellent service from Ciara, Alex and Charlotte. Couldn't do enough for us. The food was served quickly and was very tasty.

Staff were great and happy to advise on the menu with questions. Tables looked like they might come off the wall upstairs but we're actually sturdy enough (stopped me putting my elbows on the table 🤣). Food was nice, not sure why the coleslaw was so seasoned though, didn't need to be everything else is very seasoned. Cheese balls, milkshake and dirty fries were beautiful.

Great food the wine is good too Good music and atmosphere but lacking people might be bc of holidays. Best waffle fries ever eaten. Would recommend

Fab food in a lovely find in Durham.

Spent around £50 for 2 people, service was great, Dylan served us for a Tuesday evening (Thankyou very much, you were amazing! :) ) burgers were on point, ordered a side of onion rings myself, if only they were less oily. Walked out feeling a bit off because of how much oil was in them onion rings. Other than that, place is cozy, warm. If only there was some background music, could clearly hear what people were talking about behind us. Staff were supportive and very humorous 🤭, brought a smile to our faces, thankyou to the staff for a chill Tuesday evening :)

Went to Durham just to get to a taste of the best burger in town! We always make sure to drop by for a quick bite and Fat Hippo never disappoints. A quick shout out to our amazing girl Emma!

Ordered on Uber eats ahead of time - a bit pricey but the quality of the burgers was great - brioche bun, quality sauce. I just wish that, even though the coke and orange and pomegranate San Pellegrino were great, they were in sealable bottles and not wrapped in a plastic bag.

Sauce that is put on the burgers without an option of it not being included on online orders is beyond disgusting. It’s made me feel very sick. If I didn’t get 1000 bites of gristle I got 500. Chips were inedible…soaking to the point they went straight in the bin. They also had a very odd tasting seasoning. Sin city burgers was closed so I tried this place. What a horrid experience. Over half the burger and the entire small and measly portion of chips in the bin. Even if it had been remotely edible I still wouldnt have been happy about having paid £15!!!! YES £15 for a DEAL! Nah. Won’t be ordering from here again. No IDEA how it’s so highly rated 🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢 sin city all the way. Two burgers, 2 LARGE actual portions of fries and two drinks for a few quid extra and their food is beyond amazing. Don’t order from Fat Hippo it’s got a gross “signature sauce” that’s SOAKED over the burger to the degree you can’t taste anything and so the bun is falling apart / soaking wet inedible fries / small portions for an extortionate price for what you get. 👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻

The only flaw I can think of about this place is the price tag on it. Quite expensive burgers but not as expensive as some other places nearby. As far as Durham prices go, they're only slightly above average. I'd definitely reccomend if you can spare the money. Food is high quality and full of taste. Chips don't need salting and the burgers are always cooked beautifully. The price tag could definitely be reduced by about 10% on most things. If it was I'd probably be in there much more often. Just at the limit for me.

Worst service in a while. Drinks took ages, food also took ages cos they had so many delivery orders. Food was bland. Never checked on us and took so long to clear our trays despite staff walking past multiple times. Sat next to where they kept the delivery orders so had to listen to staff stressing over them and arguing with each other as well as hear another staff member keep saying she was scared to go into the kitchen. Seems a lovely place to work! Also spent all evening on the toilet despite making them aware of an allergy.

Delivery times were absolutely ridiculous, 30 to 40 mins standard I get that but 2 hours. And the delivery address is only 3 miles away.

Was sat 10cm away from people on both sides on a wonky table. Food overpriced, burger tasted like a big mac but £13+ and the fries were small and got cold fast, my ice cream never came and had me waiting ages and didn't tell me the machine was broken ,even though my milkshake came from the same machine, I had to overhear that it was broken and had to ask them about it and then they still made me wait ages to pay. We asked for another straw for the milkshake which they said sure and never came back and I was asked for a tip after?. Also the day after I feel like caca and had diarrhoea.

We came with a big party and Ocean and the team really looked after us, the food was gorgeous and the staff were so lovely and helpful, would 100% go again!

Friendly staff, great food and an awesome venue I came to Fat Hippo with three of my friends at the last minute. The staff were lovely, particularly the hostess, Emma, who found us a great table within minutes of our arrival, and Jasmine who took our orders without delay and checked in on us regularly during our meal. The food was amazing - one of the best chicken burgers I've had in Durham! I will definitely be returning to Fat Hippo soon!

Ordered online via Uber Eats. Food was very late arriving (more than an hour) when the 3rd dispatched driver managed to pick it up. Burger (vegan) and chips were cold and soggy. Very disappointed.

Waited 45mins to get food (when told it takes 4mins each side to cook a burger) when it turned up, hand cooked chips were pale and flaccid, burger pink and clearly uncooked in the middle . Waitress said it was cooked and temperature checked. Clearly not. Burger and chips recooked and ok. Bill dumped on table and then appeared with card machine. Didn’t even ask if we wanted another drink. Feel this business is too busy looking after uber eats (about 10 orders while we were waiting), rather than customers who wait and pay for drinks. Other people were complaining about wait times.

First time here and never again, my chicken burger was grey and the smell that was coming off that and the bread bun was very unpleasant the only thing that was edible was the dirty fries and my partner said his beef burger just tasted like a frozen patty. Very disappointing especially at the price we paid

Fat hippo put in a great showing for restaurant week. Even though its a chain they definitely still put care into making good quality burgers with great ingredients. Very attentive staff and quick service.

Love, love, this place. Always a must when in Durham City centre. Even better, we landed on restaurant week two corses for £15 excellent value and service.

Great burgers, irn bru on draught and dog friendly, what more could you ask for

We arrived 10 mins early, our table was booked for 8pm and a table was not ready. Fair enough, the place was very crowded as you would expect on a Saturday. I asked if I could order drinks while we waited and was told no. We didn’t wait long for a table to be ready, unfortunately it was in the middle of main thoroughfare between the front and back of the building right next to the kitchen door. We were promptly served with drinks ( poor selection to choose from) and THEN they told us that there was a 45 min wait for food. So we waited and waited and waited some more. Staff were running around with neatly packed brown paper bags filled with burgers ready for delivery. While we waited and waited and waited some more we could see and hear people around us asking where their order was and how much longer they would have to wait. The staff were very apologetic but still running around with brown bags ready for delivery. I guess what I’m trying to say is, if you want a mediocre burger, order online and put the Fat Hippo down as the delivery address. You might not have to wait as long. We eventually got our meal after a waiting 1 hour 10 minutes sitting on a reclaimed pallet. Bon appetite.

Love all fat hippo restaurants. The food is always tip top. However my gripe with the Durham restaurant was an Uber eats delivery. Placed an order at 18:33...2 and a half hours later called up to find out what was happening and I was told "it won't even start cooking for at least another 40 minutes" and that they were busy and that "it's not their fault". No apology however, I won't be using the Durham restaurant again however.

For someone in the hospitality industry, the Manager was the complete opposite of hospitable. Hopefully, she doesn’t give others the same treatment I experienced. Ps: the other staff I spoke with was very helpful.

Ordered 2 GF Fat Hippo burgers to takeaway. Server was very explanatory about what sides we could have, food was lovely and fresh. Was only missing the slice of back but regardless will be back

Nice burgers a bit expensive for what it is

Really nice restaurant, we booked a few days before which was the right decision as they were busy. Followed our request to be seated somewhere quieter in the restaurant. Food was well priced and very tasty. Would recommend to anyone who loves a messy burger

Great top tier food and you'll be stuffed by the time you leave! Service was a bit lacking with us waiting for the bill for 20 mins. Eventually just went and asked the waitress. No harm done.

Huge portions here, too big in my opinion as the chicken burger falls apart as soon as you try and tackle it. Would be better with just one thigh. The chicken did taste great though. We had some trouble ordering some dirty fries with meat with vegan cheese, for a dairy intolerance and the manager didn't seem pleased we hadn't said we had allergies. Seems that the ordering system can't handle someone not wanting dairy but being happy to eat meat. "Counter intuitive to do such a thing" according to the manager. Half way through there was a cold draft and strong smell of smoke which seemed to be as if someone was smoking out of a back door in the kitchen. Eventually someone went to look into it after trying to blame it on the front door instead. Overall I'd probably go back to a different fat hippo for a smaller burger, which wasn't available as we were there on a bank holiday.

Great to see a chain originating from the North East prospering. The Hans Gruber-ger Christmas special was hands down the best burger that I have ever eaten, and my expanding waist line is evidence of a long history of burger consumption. Our waiter, Freddie provided great service and was just one of the many lovely staff to help us throughout our meal.

Food is lovely but the tables are quite tightly packed together so you're earwigging on lots of other people's conversation. There were occasions with lots of staff standing around not doing much but they were very responsive if you could get their attention. Overall worth a visit but not if you're in a rush.

It was okay however I’m sure the vegan burgers have been changed since the last time I came, not as good!

On the day of the Durham Christmas Market, we timed it just right to get a table here without a reservation. Others weren't so lucky! The staff were so friendly and accommodating. The food came promptly and was really tasty and filling. A really good experience.

Food was nice but service was really disappointing. Our mains came out while we were still eating our starters, nobody came to check on us once we had our food or even came near where we were sat so I had to get up and ask for a drink. The 3 staff members were just stood around the bar having a chat where I got a sarcastic "no" rather than an apology for nobody coming and checking on us eventhough we were the only table one the ground floor. For a £60 bill for the 2 of us I think the service should have been better as it does affect your experience and it has put us off going back to the Durham restaurant

Not recommended. Taking it very carefully of the bill- double check! I’ve had been charged almost 70% more of the original price (crazy, one burger and one IPA for 34£). I thus came back to ask them printing the bill again and got the differences refunded immediately. I think they knew it was wrong.

Not many options, and the pricing was quite confusing, but the food and service were incredible!

We booked a table but called in an hour earlier than my reservation on the chance they could fit us in sooner. Mercedes was really helpful and found us a table on one of the busiest nights of the year (Lumiere). All of the staff were great and the food was amazing. We were in and out in under and hour.
