Tango Durham in County Durham

Been to Tango many times at this site and the previous one and was normally very good. Had a mediocre experience last time but called in again to try and it was the same. My wife's cold burger came and she was done with hers before mine arrived, which was 'okay', not the usual standard. I understand it's busy this time of year, but we were a very easy table of two. No-one came to us to ask how we were and were taken back when I said I don't want to add the service charge onto the bill (always happy to tip) Shame as it was always a great place to eat, wth great burgers and atmosphere. Don't think we will go back

Good, properly tasty food, at good prices for the quality. Excellent service from attentive, helpful, friendly and fast staff. It was completely full, but we were looked after as if it was nearly empty. Nice, relaxed atmosphere, Dog friendly. We had a great time.

It was my first time trying tango, and I was not disappointed. Not usually a burger fan, I avoid places such as this. However, I loved the experience. The burgers are very well constructed and didn't leave me feeling overwhelming full. We also had a starter of hummus and flat bread, which was outstandingly good. A joint starter, coffee, and two burgers burgers burgers. Came to £50 which isn't bad..

Sharply going downhill since they moved premises. The interior is not as nice although it is bigger. The biggest issue by far however is the staff. Used to be so friendly and attentive at the old place on the bridge, just went tonight and it would be easier to list what they got right. Took drinks and food order together, drinks arrived timely but when the food arrived 2 meals were wrong, and had missing items that were ordered. When asked about these, they brought one of them, but never showed up with the second until we asked another member of staff. There was a constant roulette of staff coming to the table, I think about 4 different people in total, none of which seemed to know what the last had done. Asked to see the dessert menu, and they forgot to come back to ask us what we wanted. By the time someone else showed up we were ready to leave. On top of this they automatically add the 10% service charge to the bill. You can ask to remove it, but it feels scummy that they automatically put it on the bill so you feel awkward asking to remove it when it's not deserved. Not the same place that it used to be. Lost the homely and welcoming vibe and the staff are clueless as to what's actually going on with each table. Food is still decent, but with the prices constantly creeping up it's no longer the must-visit little secret it once was.

Had the lockjaw (pulled pork) and was disappointed. Dry meat and barely any sauce to save it. Chips were soggy and oily. Will be back to try the beef burgers and hopefully it’ll be better.

So we had a variety of meals, but I had prawns, they put it on toast but left the skins on which I am still wondering why

Great food, friendly service. Food arrived fast and is good quality stuff.

We ordered drinks and dessert for 3 friends, the desserts were the same but one of them arrived more than half an hour late. That's why we wanted to cancel the order, we lost our appetite. Then they brought the dessert and said they wouldn't charge for it, but if you still want to eat it, we'll leave it on the table. Everything was polite so far, but then we were asked if we wanted anything else. When we said we didn't want anything for now, the waiter said 'I'll bring the bill then'. It was a really unpleasant attitude. Couldn't we take a break from eating and drinking and continue later? We felt like we were kicked out and had to get up...

Stop adding 10% service charges sneakily into the bill.

We had a couple of burgers here today. Both were delicious and the chips were very good too. I have the Diablo burger and it's nice when something described as hot actually is. My only disappointment is with the 10% service charge that is added automatically. I realise this can be removed, if it's noticed, and I have no issue tipping for good service but adding it automatically is just too presumptuous.

Their chips are exquisite, to the point that you have one and then must have another, and another... but then, just while you're struggling to find words to describe them, the burger hits your taste buds and it's good beyond description. It was our first visit there but we'll be back. A new, firm favourite. The staff were great. The 3 stars for atmosphere is down to the questionable choice of black paint everywhere, and the stingy soft drink glass size with more than half the volume as ice cubes. But the burger and chips are like the Sirens of Greek mythology, calling me back 😀

Fantastic eatery! Burgers/side were delicious and caters well for non meat eaters. Good selection of beverages too. Lovely feel inside, great decor, helpful friendly staff. Highly recommend!

Oh Tango, Tango what have you done? Your nachos used to be so superior. The cheese bomb sauce 👌The chicken strips, a unique experience with great seasoning. But changes have been made and the sauce is mayonnaise-y 😱 the chicken strips, some shriveled over-fried kfcesque situation. Why, Tango, why?

got the loaded natchos gluten free and they were very nice. ordered a coffee and it came with a buscuit in so i couldn’t drink it as im coeliac. limited gluten free options except for burgers. service is quick and nice

I don't usually write negative reviews, nor would I say this one is completely negative. The nachos with Korean brisket were great, meat was really good and well seasoned, the burger spring rolls were also okay - not to my taste but other half enjoyed them. Now, onto the burgers.... For a restaurant that advertises themselves as a hamburger restaurant I was really looking forward to their burgers! And maybe my expectations were higher than in relation to a restaurant that just serves burgers among other things. We had the Gaucho and Kiss me Deadly. Gaucho was very salty, the meat not overly tender and just not great. Kiss me deadly - both patties were burnt and overall it was just nothing exciting. Chips were also overcooked. No coleslaw or something on the side to break the meaty/salty taste. I would say let's give grace as it was a busy day, but it just wasn't great. If I were to compare it to Five Guys which is just a fast food restaurant, those burgers were closer to a pub burger. Price wise nothing crazy as for 2 starters, 2 mains and 2 drinks we paid around £60.

Burger place in Durham. Diablo 24 burger really a hot n spicy one. Cheese n blue is tasty. However they include 10% in their bill and better check before you paid.

Lovely food, friendly staff and beautiful setting in historic Durham. We didn’t book but they managed to fit us in even though it was very busy.

Wow! Loved our evening here. Super place to finish a long weekend visiting Durham. I ordered the “Naughty Salad” and they made no fuss whatsoever when I asked to swap an ingredient. Arguably the best salad I’ve had out ever. Husband and son had burgers and also enjoyed their choices. I stole a chip or two and thought they were good too! Live music was possibly not our taste but definitely added to the atmosphere. Aaliyah was our lovely waitress and service was fast and friendly.

New location and a few new additions to the menu which for a coeliac is always welcome. The new location is lovely. Much more room and the decor and atmosphere was brilliant. The staff are always friendly, professional and make you feel very welcome. The food as always is beautiful and oh those chips...to die for! Can't fault this place and would highly recommend it. It's great for families, couples and friends on a get together. We will be back soon.

Food was really nice- I would recommend the chorizo starter. Menu was really good for lactose intolerance. My burger did have too much BBQ sauce on which meant it was quite sickly and I couldn’t eat a lot of it. Cocktails were also very small and under-filled so I wouldn’t recommend getting one for the price

Laid back Quick, friendly service Tasty too! Popped along for bank holiday meal....specialises in burgers bit other options available inc. veg. options. Our burgers were tasy....and, somewhat unusually for such places, the chips were fab too. Enjoy! Nothing negative to report ( unless you're after super healthy!)

Good place to eat in Durham. They have a little bit of everything, they serve quickly and the price is acceptable for the super portion they give you. Additionally, dogs are welcome. Drawbacks: There is little space to move, very small tables and little space for food. Easy to trip or bump into someone if you get up. If it gets loud it can be noisy. In the girls' bathroom there was no paper nor did the water work, and they charge you a 10% "optional" service fee, but they basically make you pay for it.

See to a table straight away and order was prompt, I had the moules frites, these were some of the biggest mussels I've ever had! The sauce was lovely and the fries were great, if a little over salted for my taste. I didn't think the bread was necessary but I don't have an enormous appetite. My only criticism would be that my order for 1 filled my entire table so if I had been dining with a guest it might have been a bit awkward but overall a faultless experience.

Update since moving to new premises. Long wait for food and order was slightly wrong. Also the prices are becoming silly, £9 for 5 small Halloumi Fries is criminal. That being said, I can't deny my burger was incredible as it was on previous visits. Oh and the service charge automatically added to your bill is such a red flag. You have to ask for it to be removed which is just awkward. Physchological trick no doubt.

We loved this place. Good atmosphere and music, and great service. My husband had a burger and I had the flat iron, both were amazing. We'll definitely come back.

Easy walk from cathedral/castle. Nice break, on a busy day. Proper Chips (hand cut 'proper' fries) are to die for. Durham Garden and Ella Cosmo are most refreshing. I can only imagine how good the burgers are! UPDATE Five days later, back in Durham and made the way back to Tango to see if the burgers are as good as the fries. I was right, they are, (I had the bacon and blue). Only negative, when I asked for the password to post this, I was told they didn't have Wi-Fi, even though I was showering a string signal on my phone. Minor inconvenience. Well worth the stop for a meal or a drink.

I'm usually dubious when it's a burger place in a uni town with high ratings. Food here is excellent (seems freshly made, ingredients are quality). Highly recommend the deadly burger (with black pudding). Music is a bit loud :-)

What a beautiful place to have some food and drinks. All staff were very professional and friendly. Orders were coming very quickly. Staff were coming back to ask if we need extra drink. We felt very looked after. Food were beautiful. 5 gold stars of 5. Very highly recommended.

On Father's Day, I was taken to Tango in Durham and really enjoyed it. I tried to get the Sunday burger, but with it being only limited available ability, they had sold out . So I went for the Kiss Me Deadly burger, which was excellent. The downside was the wait it took nearly an hour for the burgers to be served. I understand they were very busy as it was Father's Day, and they had to turn customers away, but the wait was a bit long. They did apologise for the delay. The wait did not spoil our visit and will probably go back again as the service overall was good.

Were visiting the city with a party of 9 and was recommended this as a great place to eat, but was let down at almost every turn. Our table wasn't ready after arriving on time, so we were left waiting for it to be sorted with the whole party sat in line like we were waiting for a bus. Wouldn't have been an issue, but nobody offered to get drinks, despite the barman being directly in front of us. After getting seated we placed a drinks order, then, about ten mins later the waitress came to take the food order with drinks still nowhere to be seen. We delayed the order whilst we waited for the drinks. When they arrived they were as expected, though my daughter had ordered an alcohol free cocktail which must have been 90% ice, and she drank in seconds. Food was ordered and again took an age to arrive - we had starters, which I had Chorizo, which to be fair was good but is a particular favourite of mine, though others complained their starters were cold. When the mains came three of the steaks were cold, someone's order came without the chips and it seemed to take forever to actually get all the food to the table. Overall opinion of the food was it was 'alright'. Some steaks were sent back to be refreshed, maybe a mistake as, when they did arrive everyone else was finished. Didn't bother with a dessert, had enough by then. To be fair, the waitress knew they had messed up as she came offering money off the bill, but the price didn't matter, we just wanted a better experience. Badly let down.

Really like this place, sit outside on the back terrace, do a lovely breakfast and coffees one of the best I've had in Durham.

Really nice restaurant and the staff were very attentive and helpful especially when asking directions to find our way back to the bus stop for park and ride. We booked Tango after reading great reviews and wanted somewhere in the city centre following going round the university. We ordered our food and drinks and they both came quickly. I had Kiss me deadly and my daughter had Van Man. Both really tasty burgers and cooked really nicely. They are served with a good sized portions of chips. We also had a side order of onion rings which were lovely. Thankfully we didn’t order a starter as the burgers were so filling. Only small negative was £1 for a tiny pot of bbq sauce to go with the burger. Other than that service and food was excellent. Would definitely go again and recommend to people if visiting Durham.

Tango’s new venue on Saddler Street has become my favourite burger joint. They nail it from all angles. The burgers are pure epic. This time I had a triple patty Lockjaw, with Korean loaded fries (the fries are good, I don’t usually get that bothered about fries, im all about the burger but them loaded fries man…..). Pure taste sensation and a proper full belly. It was my birthday after all. The venue/vibes are spot on, and the service & bants is topper and the coffee is also class. In my eyes, they’re leading the burger premiership league.

Absolutely love Tango! The food, coffee and drinks are amazing! The staff members are all very nice and welcoming and are all super friendly! I’ve gone in a few times now and this one waitress Sofia always remembers my name and my coffee order! And takes such good care of me! Definitely recommend!

STUN had the best time, came all the way from Bowburn to visit the beautiful, fresh faced staff members of Tango, Durham. I would particularly like to thank Sofia for giving up her busy schedule to ensure I get my Iced Oat Vanilla Latte ✨PRONTO✨. Second time in last 6 months I've visited with a large group of kids. Children's menu is excellent value. Staff were excellent.

First time coming since Tango took over the Bills site and absolutely loved it, staff were really friendly food was great (bit pricy but great quality) kept a lot of faves from the old menu too. Absolutely transformed what used to be Bill's and the vibe is lovely, can't wait to come back with my dog soon!

Waited ½hr for a drink. Front of house staff was on go slow. Literally watched customers sit down and leave as they were sick of waiting...I was ready to walk out several times but I was curious as to how long it would take to get served. To the manager... your staff are loosing you sooo much custom!

We ordered small plates from the starters menu to share instead of burgers. The food was nice, really enjoyed the truffle fries and nachos. Staff were attentive but our food took longer than we would have liked to arrive, they seemed to be understaffed in the kitchen. It was, however, fairly busy for a midweek evening.

Brought friends here who’d never been before and as usual it didn’t disappoint. Although a busy Saturday afternoon staff couldn’t have been more attentive always chatty and pleasant and our glasses were never empty. Food was delicious everyone cleared their plates we love this place.

I'm a bit sad writing this as I wanted to be wow'd by their burgers...! But no! My burger was cold, yes, I could have sent it back but didn't want to disappoint my daughter who booked. It was really cold. Probably was tasty but not great. Others in our party said afterwards their food was lukewarm at best. Drinks took ages to arrive. It's a nice place, good vibe, busy but they need to speed things up. £15 for a burger...it needs to be hot!

The first few times I went here, at the old location, the food was great. I went recently and it was all really basic bordering on bad. The chicken burger and bacon weren’t crispy at all, hardly any lettuce or sauce on it, the chips were soggy, clumped together and undercooked. It all just seemed shot together in a rush. It’s a shame cause it’s a nice vibe but I probably won’t risk going again. Staff are lovely though 👍

Booked the private room for a family and friends get together for my son’s 21st. The staff were excellent making sure everybody’s drinks were replenished and the food was superb! It was the perfect spot for something a little more private than sitting in the main restaurant area. Staff decorated the room with balloons that I had dropped off earlier which make the already bouji room look even more fabulous. I would highly recommend for future family gatherings. 😎🙌🏽👌🏽🤩🥳

Dog friendly! The food was great and staff were really friendly and helpful and gave our dog, Bella, a lot of fuss. The nachos were especially good. Lots of veggie and vegan options too. Would definitely go there again if we’re back in Durham. Good location as well.

Went for the Diablo and some chicken tenders: - expensive £14 for burger and chips - doubling up the burger is not needed - was a bit greasy and dense - Diablo was not spicy and was boring. 4.5/10 - tenders are OK but not worth £3 each. There is a Mexican spice blend over the top which is nice if you like those flavours. - Chips are a bit oily - service inattentive. Lots of student types “working” / chatting with each other.

Let me just start by saying the food was fabulous, the new surroundings are very smart and in a great location. However, we had to prompt the staff twice for service and the place wasn't even busy. We'd been sat for a good while and the staff were too busy chatting with the barman to even take our drinks order. Starters arrived very quickly, before our drinks, which again, we had to ask for and which we could see, were on a tray on the bar, waiting. We did not pay the service charge and we won't be back. Not the first time we've had poor service here.

Easy to book a table for a family meal. Professional and friendly staff greet you on arrival and show you to your table. The drinks and food order was taken after having time to review the menu. Our meals arrived in a satisfactory time and was beautiful as always. The atmosphere in the restaurant is very pleasant. A thoroughly enjoyable experience.

Tango is great at what they do, burgers, grills, fries so definitely go if thats your food of choice. Haute Cuisine it ain't. Staff are lovely, friendly and helpful and don't keep asking you if the food is ok while you have a mouthful of it. Worth the added service charge. 😁

Sadly this isn’t going to be a good review! We were a group of friends and relatives celebrating a birthday. Firstly I must compliment the staff who were excellent, very friendly and professional. But, we were informed that both the Chicken and the Fish were off the Menu, also one of the Vegetarian options. And the Local Gin (Durham Gin) was not available. Most of the party ordered Burgers, which were very unexceptional. So apart from the fabulous staff, I couldn’t recommend this place. Sorry.

We had a great meal here. The burgers were fab, as were the sides (BBQ pulled pork fried and onion rings). The portions are a good size and it's a great value menu. I hadn't been to the old location, but this one was lovely - nice decor, enough room between tables and there was a good atmosphere.

We chose to visit Tango whilst out for the day in Durham, it was a busy establishment and we had to wait a little while to be seated. We were offered a seat at the bar so we could get a drink, so we did not mind waiting. When we got seated, we looked over the menu and I opted for the Gravy Train Roux. This burger consisted of signature rich beef, bacon, gravy, American cheese, matchstick potatoes and roast garlic mayo. The meal was very filling and full of flavour and the fries that came with were well seasoned. We were seated in the front of the restaurant on a table that was very close to another, I felt like it was a little too close to and we were intruding on the other party’s meal. The service of the actual food was rather quick which is great but we sat for a while with our bill waiting to pay and we felt a little out of the way being sat at the front.

Been meaning to try this place for a while now, so pleased I finally got round to it! They recently moved to a new location and it is gorgeous, the building has so much character, I absolutely loved it! We were seated really quickly and our servers were all super friendly and helpful. I opted for the K-House from the signature menu, and just wow! Has to be the best burger I have ever tasted, it came with home made skin on fries that were to die for too. Already planning our next visit 😍

First time visiting tango and was very impressed, food was next level and service was good ,and to top it all of the decor was very modern

Decor looked lovely so decided to go in, we were not disappointed with our choice. Lovely friendly staff, great beer and fantastic food. We both had burgers and couldn’t fault them, chip portion big, so hubby got a double helping.

A busy spot so be sure to book! The food is absolutely top notch and reasonably priced. I would absolutely recommend the Gaucho burger and posh fries! Chilli jam and aioli sauces were *chefs kiss*. Staff are very attentive and service is good. Bit of an allrounder this one!
