Cape to Cairo in County Durham

UNFORTUNATELY Cape to Cairo Shildon is closed now. Totally unexpected find in Shildon. Very interesting and different menu cooked by one of the owners who is from Sierra Leone and therefore had her own take on all the dishes on the menu. Both the chef and her husband are extremely friendly and made the visit even more memorable. We were fascinated to find that the first passenger railway in the world started outside the restaurant (which was a pub in those days) and passengers bought tickets actually in the room we were eating in. Well worth a visit and we'll be back soon

Great food, great staff and great vslue for money. Coleslaw is gorgeous. Can't rate highly enough.

Excellent food ,nice atmosphere

Unfortunately the food was a massive let down, hardly any flavour or spice and swimming in oil. Staff when available were nice but were in the back the majority of the time, despite only two tables being used. Another I believe delivery staff member had a young child with them while working..which though does happen...they were changing their nappy at a table and not a sign of hands being washed after...better child facilities are needed like a changing table etc. Women's toilets are run down lacking paper towels etc. The saving grace was that it wasn't that expensive but seriously lacked.

This place is a real hidden gem and the best food we have had in a long time! Highly recommend! They were great with our kids and we absolutely loved their dog. Would every week if we could.

Went to comedy night to watch 3x comedian s bring you own drinks but across the road is a sweet shop that has a wide range of beers & spirits. Food was excellent and manager's and staff so nice

Cape to Cairo consistently offers high quality food, customer service and events. Food wise, you absolutely cannot go wrong for the price. I would highly recommended any of the grills with the groundnut and lime marinade, it’s excellent! The curries are all great too, as is the lamb tagine. Brilliant catering for any dietary needs too (we have a vegan in our group who is always more than happy with her food!!) Staff are brilliant and more the happy to help and to accommodate needs. Atmosphere is very relaxed which makes for a great night, The events here are great too. If you can book in to see a band etc, they are always brill and such a great vibe to go with the great Food. Our party experienced the comedy night tonight which was great! Cape to Cairo really is a hidden gem, give it a go and you’ll surely enjoy :)

The food was amazing so many different tastes, we shared a platter for 2 people, which was three main dishes with Joffre rice, chips, coleslaw and plantain . Absolutely wonderful

We went to Cape to Cairo on a Wednesday evening to sample the 2 courses for £10 offer. There were 4 of us. There was lots to choose from and plenty veggie, vegan and gluten free options and they had no problem cooking for my husband who has an allergy and some intolerances. We opted for a main and dessert each. 3 had the mixed grill with different marinades and I had the tofu. We also had sides of sweetcorn and chips. We all really enjoyed our main meals. For desserts 3 of us had cheesecake, but all different types and my other half had the rice pudding. They were all delicious. Overall a fantastic meal which was ridiculously cheap. We will be back. The food here was delicious, the welcome was great. I loved the ambience and the staff were great. I'd been looking forward to going to Cape to Cairo for a long time and it lived up to my hopes.

I visited this place as I have been told that it’s really nice food! How wrong it was ordered a beef sandwich with melted cheese with chips, the beef was so tough I couldn’t get my teeth through it to actually eat it didn’t enjoy it at all, I will say the chips were nice but apart from that I was disappointed ☹️. Walking in the place I thought the decoration in there was awful just looked like something thrown together it really didn’t look nice! We were the only people in there and that was a Friday night! When trying to eat our food there was flies flying around us which really wasn’t nice! Won’t be visiting again

We've been with friends on several occasions now and are always blown away by the fabulously friendly and helpful staff, value for money and most of all the extremely tasty food. It's different to anywhere else, totally unique and so delicious. The atmosphere is great and they are happy to play diverse music where we often just get up and dance. It's the most welcoming restaurant we know and we have been to a lot of restaurants! It started with 4 of us going and our group has grown to 11, with no one wanting to miss out on such a brilliant night. Keep doing what you're doing! If you haven't been then give it a try, the more the merrier. PS saw one review about chewy meat, you were just unlucky but if you'd said at the time they would have exchanged it immediately. I've been to much more expensive places where customer service isn't a patch on Cape.

Honestly .. completely disappointed .. place was not to clean and the food was very poor.. I wish them success but they will have to pull their socks up.

Visited first time yesterday and we were not disappointed. Good choice of different styles and dishes did not disappoint us at all. Great friendly staff providing good service. Chatted to owner about the various nights planned for the future. Would definitely recommend

Ordered a couple of beef dinners and thought I'd give the place a try. Unfortunately the beef was tough and chewy, had big bits of gristle on it, and took a ridiculous amount of chewing before you could swallow it. I have very good teeth! Bit disappointed as I'd heard good things about the place. Can't say I'm willing to try it again. Service was quick though, from call to collection was only ten minutes. Maybe a different meat would have been better.

Really nice food, nowhere else selling food like this locally. Friendly staff. The building is an old pub and has maintained a lot of its character but with the addition of many Africa esque artefacts. Great value on a Wednesday, 2 courses for £10 per person.

I'm flabbergasted at the reviews this place has ? Food was very small portions for big money , Rang the shop only to be told that your food is portion wise moneted by the owner ?????

Amazing place, we visited here for dinner and we felt so welcome and looked after the entire evening. The food was just delicious and varied, we were really happy with the wide range of vegan options, all very affordable too. We will definitely come here again.

The main course was fantastic and we were then blown away by the best cheesecake and rice pudding we've ever eaten. What a lovely place. If you're near Shildon, or travelling through, I highly recommend a visit. Also, this was, technically, the first ticket office for the railways - the first locomotive travelled from Shildon in 1825 and tickets were purchased in this building. Owners are friendly, the food was really tasty, loads of options with vegetarian and vegan options, and the decals are authentic 😊

Ordered two burgers both tasted frozen/cheap meat couldn't even eat it and the triple cooked were cooked so much there was no potato left inside like eating coal have requested a refund via just eat

Ordered 5 Sunday dinner 2 with extra meat and pudding 2 with all meat .first they arrived 2 dinner missing so phoned they sent them out all very disappointing the extra meat dinner had one small piece of beef and other had 2 tiny pieces of chicken the 2 dinner they sent out after forgetting them had no turnip stuffing was like bits of scraps the pork looked like bacon beef you couldn’t chew was a waste of £49 I phoned and spoke to a girl who said to apply for refund off just eat .I couldn’t do it as it went through as guest so rang back to be told the girl wasn’t available so they would call me back still waiting.This place was recommended by a friend we had been the night before and food was good value it cost £100.80 for 6 people cheese cake was best part of meal but wouldn’t recommend Sunday lunch .

We have visited twice now and both times thoroughly enjoyed the delicious flavours and African vibes, with the music playing and the various artefacts throughout the restaurant. The food was tasty and plentiful with lots of choice, including a number of vegan options, drinks chilled and the BYOB option is great for those who fancy a tipple with their meal, without restaurant prices. On street parking means easy access and no long walk or hassle finding & paying for a space in a busy town. We will definitely be back to work our way though the rest of the vegan options 👌🏼🌱

This is the 3rd time we have been for the two courses for £10 offer on a Wednesday. Excellent value! Very tasty, nicely spiced curries and we love the jolof rice. Great family run restaurant, the food is something a little pleasantly different but not too hot. Don’t be put off because you may not have tried African inspired food, it’s delicious. Friendly and informal atmosphere, loads better than the big chain places! You bring your own drinks with no corkage fee - love this! I highly recommend everyone should try this place - I bet you go back - we did and we will definitely go again 10/10

I can get why some people might not quite understand this place, but sister, its good. This, in a good way, feels lime eating home cooked food, but food thats not what everyone would eat at home. There's nothing fancy here, but it's good, and it's not boring at all. I had a burger with guayan egg on it.. who knows what guayan egg is, but I had it and it was nice so ain't moaning. If you want something different, try it out, with open eyes. Also very good value, and the staff were great, so chilled and laid back it was like going round my nans house. Thumbs up from me.

Absolutely disgraceful experience ordering for delivery. Ordered on Saturday 11th Feb. Spent over £30 and was very happy to do so as noticed on social media that the restaurant had posted about how they are quiet and customers often say they don’t understand why, so we thought we’d support them and give it a go. Absolutely wish we didn’t as the whole experience was a disaster and to top it off the food that eventually arrived was absolutely disgraceful. Order was over 2 HOURS late - kept getting texts from Just Eat to say ‘Sorry order has been delayed’ then got a call from the restaurant to ask what seasoning we wanted on the grill, we then confirmed despite being aware we stated this already on the order online but didn’t mind repeating this. Asked at this point how long our food would be as it was already 5-10mins away from being due out for delivery for the new delayed time, she said ‘nothing wrong with your order it will be with you in ten mins’ an hour later… still NOTHING. Rang again, now annoyed and they said they’d throw in a cheesecake asked us what flavour we’d like etc - turned out they didn’t even give us one when order did come which is just laughable. They blamed delay on just eat as apparently delivery times can show as wrong - which I don’t believe. We then rang for a second time more than 20-30mins after this as still no food to be told ‘We don’t know where delivery driver is, he isn’t answering his phone, no idea how long your food will be’ - (literally ridiculous by this stage) so we asked to cancel and they said we can’t and should request to cancel once it’s delivered via just eat so we can get a refund. Even though the food was so late we honestly would of forgotten about that if the food was nice - but what was delivered was a slap in the face for being patient and not demanding our money back. Grill with chipolata style sausages that you couldn’t even cut or bite into they were that over done. Curry container was half empty with a few lumps of chicken in the whole dish, ‘taco’ was a greasy wrap with minced beef and tasted horrible. Everything absolutely swimming in oil. And no cheesecake of course! To be honest I think she just said that to get us off the phone. I have retained pictures and call log/texts to show delays incase restaurant denies this. Honestly - don’t waste your time, food really not nice, service absolutely shocking and delivery times are horrendous - this place massively needs to improve.

Such a fab quirky little place. Please don't visit for run of the mill food, this is authentic african food and the menu is so varied and reasonably priced. As a vegan I am well catered for. The staff are super friendly and really helpful. All dietry needs are catered for. If you are luck to get to one of the events they hold, please go ...you won't be disappointed!

Just had pork Sunday dinner , it was lukewarm, portion size was tiny, the little bit of cabbage I got was nice but that was the only nice thing about it , we nearly took them back because of the portion size it was like a child portion for £7:50

Wonderful food, great atmosphere. Personally I felt like I was back in Egypt. So if you want to have a holiday experience but only have so little time and money to spend go there. Also go there if you just simply want to have a good time and authentic, tasty food. Unfortunately we do live rather far away, came to stay at Redworth Hall Hotel but the restaurant was fully booked so we decided to venture out. Only a few minutes from the hotel. If I was local I'd eat there every week. And if you like pugs, georgius Cassie might be in to play with. If you rather avoid she won't bother you, very well behaved dog. Enjoy!

The best take away we have had In a very long time, we visited on the hottest day of the year a didn’t really expect them to be open, we were pleasantly surprised by the warm welcome, we sat and had a drink while we waited I even had the pleasure of playing with the cutest little pug while we waited! I must admit that I wasn’t too sure when I got home and opened the bag but I was so wrong, the food was very tasty and the meat soft and succulent, we will definitely visit again and would love to eat in next time 👍

Avoid, avoid. Just ordered the Moroccan slow cooked lamb, it's literally oil and veg scraps there's maybe a teaspoon of lamb in it. Ordered the meatball stew also, it was pretty meh. Just won't be ordering again

Had Sunday lunch takeaway. Awful. Mash was glupey, carrots watery, cauliflower cheese was disgusting. I won't say any more. Won't be going back.

Just been with family Loved the vibe of the place, interesting decoration and nice choice of music. However Sunday dinners were very poor, and over complicated. I. E. Mash was sour having had horseradish added, which cause a minor allergic reaction. Greesy tomato relish was the freshest ingredient on the plate. Veg was tinned. Yorkshire were tainted slightly with a burned taste, meat was mostly processed. The deserts were reasonable. Nice place, shame about the food.

So so nice; everything from the Durban curry to the lamb tageine to the peri peri…all good! So friendly and family run, we’ll see you again!
