The Rib Room Steakhouse and Grill in County Durham

WOW! My fiancé and I dined at The Rib Room while staying as guests at Ramside Hall on New Year’s Eve. The food was out of this world, the steak was honestly one of the best things I’ve ever eaten! Every aspect of the meal felt extra special. The staff were friendly and attentive and it was a lovely atmosphere, a slice of France in County Durham! Sadly we’re not that local but if we’re ever back in the area we’d return in a heartbeat.

Visited on the evening of Sunday 27/10/2024, 6:30pm. From the outset, there appeared to be problems with service, with a queue of people waiting to be seated at the restaurant reception desk. Order was taken efficiently, and we had the Steak Sharing Board for two, with a couple of sides. Some bread and butter were provided while we waited. The quality of the food was exceptional and could not be faulted. When we had finished, we had some difficulty attracting attention for our bill. We said we wanted to pay by card but no card machine was brought. After waiting for some time, we had to get up and stand around the restaurant reception area, almost to purposely get in the way, to get attention, and I had to collar a member of staff to say we were waiting to pay. In summary, food excellent, but the service - which may be due to insufficient staff - leaves something to be desired, and pulls down the rating of this review. Nevertheless, we would return.

Went for a Special meal with the wife and ordered the sharing board which was a selection of different cuts of meat . Having had one before from Miller and carter I had a good idea what to expect as they cook every steak different . When the server asked how we would like our steak cooked I asked how they recommend each one to be cooked and was told they should all be cooked medium . I questioned this and the server went to the kitchen and asked the chef . Her response when she came back was shocking . The chef has 2 big tables in so doesn't have time to cook each steak separately which I found to be unbelievably poor so we had our meal and left but won't return

Absolutely fabulous staff and food. Service was attentive but not intrusive. Went for aunt's 60th birthday. Brought balloons and a birthday cake. Cut and served the cake at the end of the meal for us. Only gave 4 stars instead of 5 due to a mix up with the steaks when they were served. (Ordered medium and a medium well and the sauces that we ordered had been put on the wrong plates giving us the wrong steaks). Other than that we had a fabulous evening with gorgeous food. Thank you.

Had Sunday lunch today and it's got to be the the worst I've had!!! The Beef was practically inedible with the amount of fat on it, roast potatoes were dry and hard, gravy watery and tasteless!! The other veg was just OK! I did let the waitress know I wasn't happy and I didn't really get a response! I won't be back.

Nice venue and average steaks, food was just OK, it's the second time we have had average food at this restaurant. Not what you would expect when paying north of £100. We will avoid for a year or two.

A decent dinner with lovely surroundings and good music selection. Highlight was the service from the lovely Helen - she was so helpful, friendly and went above and beyond to make my dining experience relaxing!

Very average all round. Not worth nearly £400 for a meal.

Food was mediocre at best. Handcut chips were inedible. (They are using wrong potatoes). Replaced with fries which were okay. Chicken meal was unpleasant, tough chicken breast, tiny potato portion, over cooked fennel and topped with a poorly finished sauce. Generally small portions Staff were very attentive.

Sunday lunch terrible, Lamb burnt and tough, veg cold and soggy! Starter tasteless and bread to oily to eat. Won’t be returning an expensive waste. Staff never enquired why we returned nearly full plate

We stayed at the Ramside last night was a really nice break away if a little expensive. Food was amazing couldn't fault anything about the food. But the service was a little questionable they put me and my partner on a small two person table and we ordered a sharer for two people and a few other plates so there was a lot so they moved us to another table otherwise we wouldn't have room for everything. When the food came they didn't have fries on my plate or a chilli sauce which was stated in the menu there was. So I had to ask for them. They missed off one of my partners sauces which we had to ask for and my partner ordered lobster, which he said there was little meat on. I also asked for another gin and tonic and the drink never came I waited and I was finished my meal and no one came with my drink. They must have forgot. Then when we asked for the bill and card machine they took soo long. Apart from that the food was actually lovely couldn't fault the food itself. Would defo eat there again

Starters were lovely. Main course arrived. Waiter arrived and announced “steak”! And just started putting the plates down. Had a side of tomato, onion and blue cheese…. Well it was 4 large slices of tomato with rings of onion and some hard blue cheese. Not what I expected for the 4.50 price. The steak…. Sirloin was dry and black on one side. Fillet was lacking in any flavour

Not the experience we expected . Booked the rib room to celebrate a 21st birthday. The rib room was closed for refurbishment . At no point did anyone tell us even when we were directed to the area. We were given a table in the carvery room. Which isn’t what I booked or the experience I wanted for a special celebration. Asked for the wine list 6/7 minutes later was asked what we wanted to drink , we said we are still waiting for the wine list . He was are you. Then arrived asking for drink and food order. When we asked to wait he said I can take them together. We wanted to celebrate a special occasion not to rush . Presentation of the food wasn’t great . They seriously need to go to the tomahawk steak house potto to see what a steak platter should look like not 4 steaks on a plate. We spoke to the manager on duty the next days as several people were complaining on the night. He was totally disinterested,actually felt he was quite amused by our experience said the staff work working in an unfamiliar restaurant . He said they were not made aware of the work going a head . Disinterested staff and management .

Sunday lunch was served cold, vegetables, gravy, meat all cold. Left a coating of grease in my mouth. Expensive lesson, won’t be going back.

Good quality food with pretty good service overall. Tonight was very noisy, with lots of young children in the restaurant.

We attended the rib room at Ramside Hall for my partners birthday. The food was beautiful and recommendations. I am a fussy eater and they catered to my requirements with ease and pleasure. I have to thank jean, Issac and Kate for their 1st class service and made us feel very welcome. 100% recommended. The carvery is being refurbished and we can't wait to come back when it's finished.

We would have given you 5 stars but after being seated we were ignored for 20 minutes with people seated after us receiving immediate attention. Having had a similar experience in January when we waited over an hour for service we were ready to get up and leave. I did however stand up to seek out your head waiter to complain when I was intercepted by Cain who asked if he could assist. To his credit Cain took over the situation and made sure the remainder of the evening was an enjoyable experience for us. We had the Chateaubriand which was beautiful. We can't thank Cain enough and hopefully you pass our best wishes to him and realise he is a star in the making!

The food was exquisite and the service excellent - I couldn't have wished for more (well maybe a little more for the price) The fillet steak was one of the best I have eaten and the lobster delicious. Slightly annoying was the fact that the two of us were given different menus which had different prices and those prices were different to the website. I asked why the menus were different and was told that new ones arrived that day (31st January) Ok - fine but only distribute one or the other please. Attention to detail is critical.

Our first visit, we arrived early, had a drink and looked at the menu, we said if the table is ready early that would be good, and it was. We had a chunk of bread and butter, We ordered the sharing meat platter which was OK, the dough balls a bit tough and not very garlicky. Then we had chateaubriand to share we asked for medium, the middle slices were more med rare, the sides were chips, mushrooms and onion rings and had two sauces. The meat was beautifully seasoned and melted in your mouth, the sides were quite over seasoned for me. We shared a raspberry sorbet. Service was very good.£120. Nice for the odd treat.

Oh dear!!! Not good at all - first we were seated then offered water which was fine but surely the wine may have been preferable?! Then offered bread which was “plonked” on our side plate on top of the knife (was still awaiting the butter after the starter dishes were removed) starter came before the wine! Then within about 3mins of plates cleared the mains came, however I was not able to enjoy any of the meal as I had motion issues! We were placed directly at the two seater table next to the till area which was a through fayre for: guests, waiter staff etc etc and each time anyone went past whilst you were trying to eat your meal the loose flooring made your seat and table lurch! It wasn’t cheap either as supplements are added too - it was a very poor experience the last time which was around 2yrs ago this one was worse! Also the frequent use of the word “guys” Are you ready to order “guys”? Everything ok “guys”? Oh dear - we travel to come here too it’s not on our doorstep

If you have any sort basic expectation of a service I would avoid eating here, came here for a special birthday for my dad's 60th, (which the staff were aware of) we waited at the podium for few minutes whilst waiting staff ignored us and walked past us few times without saying a word, following that the service speed couldn't have been slower, took them ages to come give us a menu, another 10 min to come get our drinks order when we could clearly see in the corner the staff were more interested in talking amongst themselves. Food & drinks finally ordered & the waiter gave us bread & butter to nibble on whilst we waited 35 min for our food, they'd didn't clear our bread or butter till our mains couldn't fit on the table. Food was below average at the very best! Got some desserts & hoping & expecting some form of wish on my dad's plate & nothing, it looked at tasted like they got it from the pound shop. The waiter never once asked how our food or dessert were even though we left the plates with a lot of food on it. The waiting staff must be heavily underpaid because they lacked any charisma or motivation to actually to their job and or even smile. Asked for more drinks which never came. Just over all extremely poor experience what is suppose to be one of the best steak restaurants at a nice hotel. Couldn't pay me to go back there. Do not celebrate a nice occasion here as you leave with a bad taste in your mouth & heavily disappointed. Management should be ASHAMED & find another trade because this isn't it. Poor service, poor food, inflated prices, tired & old ambience, dirty tables, miserable/slow staff, days old food. Will never step foot here again & be sure to warn any friends and family of from wasting their money.

Whilst I sympathise with restaurants that getting and training staff is not easy. The experience we had was just poor. The lack of attention throughout the evening was embarrassing. I wish I could say the Festive Fayre was better but it was not. We have had much better Festive Fayre at our local FE college. Where the students outperformed The Rib Room at every level. Such a disappointing experience!

Popped in for a hot beef sandwich and cuppa. Staff were good ,food good at a good price .Worth a visit .🥪🍟🥪🍟🥪👍

Dined in the Rib Room last night with family and friends to celebrate our son’s 26th birthday. The food was excellent and the service, headed by the restaurant manager Jean was impeccable!! Just to round the evening off my son was presented with a surprise small birthday cake and serenaded by waiting staff!! Everyone in the group agreed that each dish was perfect, tasty and beautifully presented! Top marks guys, very impressed!!

Beautiful food. We had stayed her as part of a stay and spa package and booked into the rib room for the night. The food was fantastic . The service was great. We ordered the chateaubriand which was delicious and cooked to perfection. Cannot fault and can’t wait to come back.

The food is really very good, unfortunately the service is lacking, the staff are polite but forgetful. One of our sides didn't turn up with our meal, one person said she would go and sort it, when nothing happened we asked another member of staff 5 minutes later who went and chased it up and by the time it arrived we had almost finished our meal. We were asked if we wanted a dessert menu, which we did, unfortunately it hadn't arrived after at least 15 minutes so again needed to ask another member of staff who brought it over but again took a very long time before anyone came to take our dessert order. As I said though the food was very well cooked and extremely tasty, especially the chateaubriand.

Came for a meal here after a wedding. I had the sharing platter and it was beautiful. Helen provided fantastic service, was very friendly, and she can take a great photo.

I booked a table for four through the website to celebrate my father's 85th birthday. I asked for a quiet table as three of our party are hard of hearing. It was a Saturday lunch time and we arrived early and shared a bottle of champagne in the lounge area. Our table was set aside from the main booths on the upper level and was quiet just as I requested. We each had a starter and main and shared a bottle of very good red wine. My starter of cheese souffle was excellent - very flavorsome with a light cheesy sauce. We had mains including venison, steak, fish and a vegetarian pithivier. All the food was delicious with generous portions. We all enjoyed our meal and had very attentive service from our lovely waiter who was very chatty. As a birthday treat my father received a surprise chocolate dessert with a candle. We all had a thoroughly enjoyable lunch which was just right for a birthday celebration.

Had the three course Sunday lunch in The Rib Room for £25.95pp. Restaurant was full with a fantastic buzz and plenty of staff on duty. First course the vegetable soup and for me the BBQ Pork Rib with Peruvian slaw. The latter was nearly a main course with loads of delicious meat on the bone. For mains my wife had the roast beef and I had the roast leg of lamb. We were asked how well cooked we wanted our meat, nice touch. The meat came with mashed potato, roast potatoes, turnip, carrots, parsnip, broccoli spears and a giant Yorkshire pudding on the plate. The inclusive sides were cauliflower cheese and seasonal vegetables ie cabbage, green beans and sugar snap peas with a large gravy boat. This course was an exceptional delight and probably the best Sunday dinner we've had. Dessert was bread and butter pudding with custard, again lush. It was noticeable that there was no supplementary charge for the lamb which seems to have disappeared from other similar menus and that the chef did not skimp on any of the portion sizes. Fantastic value for money in a beautiful room which I highly recommend.

My husband and I booked in here for a Tuesday evening to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Apologies to our waiter whose name I have forgotten but he was wonderful - attentive without being intrusive. We started with king prawns pil pil which, although a small portion (5 prawns), were delicious. We then ordered chateaubriand for 2 with 4 sides (2 included in the price), thick cut chips, onion rings, mixed greens and pea and pancetta fricasee. The meal also comes with 2 sauces. We chose diane and bone marrow. We requested the steak done medium/rare and it was served with portobello mushrooms and grilled tomato. There was far too much for us to finish and I would recommend sticking to just two sides! We declined the dessert menu but our waiter brought us a complimentary petit four as an aniversary gift. A lovely evening.

my partner and I visited when staying in hotel staff were very friendly and welcoming could not complain about the service we had the sharing starter and tomahawk sharing steak steak was cooked perfectly with an added bonus of being locally sourced from AS Chapman farm in bedale.

I had heard such good things about this place so chose for a special birthday. Birthday dessert was a tiny piece of chocolate cake you'd expect to find in a school canteen not a high end hotel! This came with no decoration or candle, as i'd seen previously on reveiws. It was literally just plonked on table(wish I had taken a photo), it was pathetic! When I expressed dissapointment as we were celebrating a 70th birthday, which was noted at the time of booking it was explained that this had been a recent change and the kitchen do not have time for writing on plates anymore and decorating. The manager himself said he has complained about this! As a former airline stewerdess for a prestigious airline, at 80,000ft we did a whole lot better! Food: Lobster was lacking taste, i'm guessing could have been frozen. The panna cotta was more like a melted white chocolate sauce in a glass with a few raspberries and meringue pieces dotted on top. Service wise nobody asked how meal was and they were very slow to the point I struggled to pay! Dessert was served without a spoon and I also noticed, the waiter used only 'Sir' and not 'Madam'. Judging from reviews it looks as though this place has unfortunately gone down hill! Defo not fit for a celebration dinner. I did send emails to both the hotel and restaurant following this experience which have both been ignored.

Had to send my steak back as it was overcooked. Was then brought back to the table to be told it was rare when it clearly was well done. The cost of this place does not represent the quality of the food or the service. Very disappointed will not be returning

We celebrated a special birthday here at The Rib Room and simply put it was exceptional! I’ve been to many lovely steak restaurants but this wins hands down. Two reasons: the food was incredible and alongside this the service was superb. We were so impressed with our waiter Cameron; he knew exactly what he was doing and had great people skills. The Rib Room clearly train their staff brilliantly. Thank you for such a lovely evening! Oh and the waiter who made our cocktails was excellent too.

Most of our night was amazing however the beginning experience we had in the restaurant was poor. We arrived on the date 6th of august night and I am nee to the place. The reception staff guides us to the right area very well. However waiting at the host desk for our meal a younger dark curly haired waitress was serving. She looked I’ve at us and walked passed a few times not acknowledging that we were waiting and this occurred a few times. When they finally came over she was very blunt speaking with us although we were a bit confused to opening times. When it got to the time of seating she sat us. Didn’t introduce herself or ask for any allergies and once again was blunt as if she was in a rush. Fair to say we didn’t feel welcomed. As we were looking through the menus we were a bit off put from this. However this is when Jean stepped in and completely changed our opinions of the night. Jean is an absolute credit to the business. He was warm and welcoming and extremely knowledgeable. From recommending and talking to me about the different red wines that were offered. To his outstanding knowledge of the menus and all of the dishes. He made the experience really worth I’ll of it. Informing me of what each dish was and recommending nee dishes that I’ve never tried before. The food was all cooked to perfection. Could not fault one part of this. From starters to desert we’re all some of the best food I have ever tried. I can’t thank jean enough for his hospitality and overall kindness. It really made the experience enjoyable. We will return to dine again as Jean has left a lasting impression. Thank you!

My Girlfriend and I had an unforgettable meal in the rib room. Being lovers of steak we had to see if it lived up to the expectations we had heard of and boy did it !!! Jean was a great host and looked after us impeccably and we can’t wait to come back and try other meals too. We had a chicken pate style starter then a superb chateubriand with pepper and bernaise sauce washed down with stunning wines. Can’t fault it. Perfection at the Rib Room Ramside ✔️✅👍💜

Ate here during our stay in the treehouses at Ramside. Food was out of this world - we both had steaks and they were cooked to perfection. Also shared a lemon meringue dessert which was gorgeous and perfect for 2 after a huge main! Staff were attentive and very friendly despite a busy night in the restaurant! Would recommend to anyone in the area!

Booked for Sunday Lunch for me, my wife and Brother in law and his fiance. Service was excellent, staff very attentive and polite. Food was excellent and value for money. Already looking for date to return.

Celebrating my fiance's birthday and we went for the Tomahawk sharing board. Wow what a steak it was. As cooked to perfection and he and I agreed best steak we have ever had. All the sides were great additions to accompany the meat. The staff and service was fabulous and absolutely loved the special treat he received with a little birthday cake and candle. Highly recommend this establishment. 👌

We had booked a table for four people, 2 of whom were staying in the hotel, for dinner. One of our party ordered surf and turf, bearing in mind the price of £55. Our mains arrived, one 8 oz fillet which was cooked as requested and was ok. One had the lamb, one the fish cake which were also ok though nothing startling. The surf and turf: the lobster which should have been pink and juicy was black and inedible. The waiter was called, the meal taken away. The waiter returned, advised that the chef sent their apologies and another meal would be cooked. Five minutes later the plate arrived back. The lobster looked fine, however the plate was so hot, giving the impression that only the lobster had been replaced. The steak which had been ordered medium rare was now dry and more like a medium cooked steak. However the diner just got on with it but did not have any confidence in the meal. When paying the bill £248 the diner was asked if everything was alright, the diner said, no, the meal was very disappointing, he was then asked if he wanted to speak to management, the diner said is there any point, the staff member said, no not really. The customer service was truly appalling. We had coffee and drinks post dinner. About 11 pm one of the party asked at the bar for a peppermint tea. The staff advised the machine had been turned off and hot beverages were not served at that time. Peppermint tea consists of hot water and a tea bag, it does not come from a machine. Eventually after much ridiculous discussion another staff member agreed to provide the peppermint tea. This was for a resident staying in the hotel. The lack of customer service, knowledge, and attitude was astounding. Where we were sitting in one of the lounges, the furniture is more than tired, shabby and uncomfortable. We had recommended this hotel to our friends who had travelled 264 miles to stay and meet up. The whole experience was poor. We will not recommend again, we will not be visiting again.

Absolutely amazing in every aspect. Staff very friendly and welcoming with excellent service throughout. The food is as good as anything we’ve ever eaten in the UK & prices are incredibly reasonable. Sure and turf was incredible, oysters to die for and seafood linguine amazing. Not to mention the fantastic desert menu!! Portion size more than adequate. We left suitably full and incredibly happy! We’ve eaten in many restaurants of various standard, including Michelin star and this is as good, if not better than all. Staff attentive, very polite and restaurant manager a real character who was happy to engage with us throughout. Thanks and see you again soon!! 👍

Grand, classic appearance, confused menu think classic French combined with a steakhouse, quite overpriced £26+ for a 6oz rump without sides. Although my reservation was early in the evening and mid-week there were only 2 other tables but service was quite slow. There were seamingly staff present, but doing other jobs as my server was looking after 2 tables single handidly. Personally I would have preferred a little more polish on the service, some modernisation/decluttering of the decor and £5 off each main. Then I'd be extolling the work being done here as what I had felt like quality just a bit expensive.

Disgusting service. Arrived on time for a booked dinner for four. Was told table not ready and to take a seat. Was given menus. No one took drinks orders or acknowledged our presence. After 15 minutes went to the restaurant entrance and staff walked past us several times completely ignoring us. Left, disgusted. My daughter had, a similar experience in September. So disappointing as my wife has been a customer for over 50 years.

The food was absolutely outstanding!! One of the nicest steaks I have ever eaten!! The lobster was cooked to perfection too. The service was second to none too! Definitely worth every penny

Not a great experience. We waited 15 minutes and eventually had to get our own drinks as no one bothered to ask if we wanted any. I ordered Halibut and Chips as not a big meat eater. To be honest the fish was beautiful but the size of it was ridiculous for £25. Never ever had a chip bigger than a fish before and my partners wasn't much better choosing the prawn as a main course 5 prawns and a portion of chips for the same price. Very overated and we felt ripped off.

Awesome steak! And lovely customer service to boot. We had dinner with our son here on a trip to visit him at Uni. The staff were friendly, kind and patiently explained the pros and cons of the cuts. The meat locker is a sight and the lobsters are fresh - so fresh you can see them sitting in the tank - all at amazing prices. Will be going again.
