Lovely traditional pub friendly staff. We went on a Friday when it was fish or Pizza night. We had pizza and a fish burger all really good quality for the price we paid. Meal for 3 with drinks £70 I feel is good value would go back if in area.

We booked on a Sunday and the man at the bar was very rude to us he wouldn’t let us sit outside on a nice sunny and then also just walked off and started serving someone else when we said is there anything else rather then Sunday lunch as it was a very hot day and fancy something lighter. He was Extremely Rude and would never go back which is a shame as we were staying down here for the week and if it would have been nice we would have returned for another meal later in the week. But definitely not now. Felt so embrassed they were so rude to us 😟

Considered going to The Exeter Inn on the Thursday of our week in the area but it was fully booked. (Subsequently found out that Thursday is their, very popular, "steak night".) We tried again on Saturday and managed to get a table for two. I would say that this is a smallish restaurant and if you want to go, book early! It's a fairly restricted menu but my wife ordered the belly of pork and I ordered the lasagne. When both were served there was sufficient quantities of everything without being so much that it puts you off! I'd have to say that this was one of the best meals that I have ever had in a pub! Having worked our way through the main course it would have been churlish not to look at the dessert menu! My wife ordered the meringue with berries and cream (see photos) and I had the sticky toffee pudding. Again, both were really good with sufficient custard for the sticky toffee pudding. (I do like my custard!) All round, an excellent evening out and highly recommended. I can't sign off without mentioning our two waitresses who were particularly attentive. I have to say a particular thanks to Kit who is, undoubtedly, the friendliest (and chattiest) waitress that I have ever come across. Good luck to you with whatever you do in the future.

We booked Sunday lunch for 6 and 2 toddlers. Upon arrival my brothers very well behaved dog was laying down next to them when I got in to the pub - seeing me the dog let out one bark and the owner came over and said the dog would have to go outside. We challenged and explained this was out of excitement only. Our father who is terminally I’ll couldn’t come as felt too ill - the same owner came over and said that we should have informed him of this as he’s turned three tables away… because of one empty chair? The final straw was my niece doing a lap of the pub after her meal holding hands with her dad, for the owner to come over and tell us she wasn’t allowed to walk up and down the pub! Clearly we were very unwelcome. Food was fine but nothing impressive. Such a shame as the other members of staff were all lovely, it was just evident this man has a complex and doesn’t welcome people from outside the village… Modbury has plenty of nice pubs - avoid this one.

My wife and me were on our way through the South Hams in Devon, and Modbury, a small town on the A379, Plymouth to Totnes road, demands the respect of a short stop for lunch. We were charmed by the frontages of the various building which make up Church Street, and chose the Exeter Inn to take a drink. This historical inn has a rich history, strongly associated with the English civil war when two battles in 1642 and 1643 were fought nearby, the Royalists winning the first, and then being driven out of Modbury back into Cornwall by the Parliamentarians (Roundheads) in the second. This inn was the meeting place for both sides, probably becuase it serves such good ales and food. The Dartmoor-brewed Jail Ale was beautifully kept, and my wife enjoyed her ubiqitous Savignon Blanc, served by the delightful Phoebe. We both felt it deserved a longer visit, but time was pressing and we chose to leave to purchase some filled rolls which were recommended across the road in the delicatessen, but that was shut so we returned to the towns car park, alongside of which was the Lazy Cow!

Stopped in the Exeter for lunch, I've been before occasionally, but only for a drink. I had gammon, the landlady asked the cook to put an extras egg on which was kind of her. The gammon came out, it wasn't a steak it was a rasher, it was a steak cut in half, it was the smallest piece of gammon I've ever been served, ever. I was moved to bring this up with the landlady and show her the 'steak', I claimed it was 4oz, she claimed it was 6oz. I was starving so I went back to the table and ate it, along with the chips that had the a day old texture to them. Next time you are in a supermarket look at a 10oz gammon steak and imagine being served half of it for just under nine pounds. I'd say calling it a steak is probably in contravention of the trade descriptions act. Afterwards I wondered.. if they only had one steak left and as we both ordered it they took a flyer and cut it in half. Really disappointing.

MORE AT TripAdvisor

We have driven through Modbury on many occasions and tonight we finally stopped to have some dinner in that lovely looking pub we always pass - the Exeter Inn. The menu outside looked nice and the building looks inviting, however... I've seldom been greeted more hostile than in this pub. The young lady behind the bar ignored me for nearly to minutes and then exhaled a '..yes..' to me. So much for good evening or alike. I asked for two drinks and when she had finished pouring them, 2 menus. 'We don't serve food sunday night' was the answer I got. No apologies, just that. She then added 'it says it on the board outside' with a hint of arrogance and annoyance. Disappointed that I just bought 2 drinks for no reasons, I turned to my table finished them - with the bartender repeating herself 'it does say outside' and walked outside. I just decided to see if I could see this alleged sign. She was right, it does say we don't serve food on Sunday evening, only, the board is turned the wrong way around: facing the wall instead of the street. It would've been impossible for us to know. To help the bartender having to send away more customers that evening, I decided to go inside and raise this fact. I calmly and friendly suggested that the sign is turned the wrong way around. Her reaction then, is why I'm writing this review. She rolled her eyes, turned her hand in a 'I couldn't care less, no go away' way and told me 'well, we still don't serve food tonight'. I think this was such a embarrassing display of customers service (I work in the industry) and felt treated with such disrespect, that this is a unfortunate but correct platform to share my experience. I don't want to stop anyone from going, but sure hope that someone at the Exeter Inn reads this and trains the staff to handle these situations a bit better.

Before we left home things changed & we thought we might need to to take our dog, not sure of the pet policy, I phoned to check. Kim took the call & wanted to check with the landlady. She called me back promptly making it very clear that we were all welcome. Transpired we didn't need to take him. On arrival Kim not only greeted us acknowledging our brief conversation but showed friendly disappointment at the lack of dog! We were introduced to Nicky the landlady who was extremely welcoming, we joined in conversatiions with the locals who made us feel part of the community. The staff were all friendly & I take an exception to the person who was rude enough to suggest the staff were "a bit thick" - this was certainly not our experience and we met all of them throughout our stay. The pub has bags of character, the village is charming and relaxed, everyone seems to know everyone & are happy to recommend each other (even rival pubs!!) and Modbury is great base from which to visit & explore Devon & Cornwall. We will be back & have already recommended The Exeter to friends and family. Thanks Nicky & the team.

We stopped at this attractive looking pub in Modbury for lunch, 5 customers eating when we arrived then waited 10 minutes for barmaid to appear in that time 2 more customers arrived behind us. Barmaid took their order first then served us, soup was off so we had a sandwich which took 40 minutes to arrive and was nothing special when it did arrive. she apologised for delay saying everything happened at once, dread to think how long the wait is when busy. Lovely 14th century pub but let down by service, food and cleanliness.

After we stumbled across this fantastic little Inn last September. Tim and I decided as part of our end of quarter celebrations where better to relax than at the Exeter Inn so we booked the same room that we had last year. We arrived at 17.30pm on Friday evening to met by Kim who really should be awarded friendliest Barmaid of the Year! Kim showed us to our room which was as beautiful as we remembered it. It was a case of drop the bags off and get ourselves a well deserved drink. For Tim it was a pint of Jail ( or two) and for me a large glass or merlot which I must say was delicious! The pub is everything you expect from a traditionally English pub, fantastic well kept beer a choice of good wine and home cooked food, beautiful sunny beer garden. I can't think of anything I would change about the place, the Landlord and Landlady work incredible hard ensuring your have an enjoyable relaxing stay, you really are made to feel at home. The rooms are tastefully decorated and comfortable and best of all the next morning John the chef makes the best breakfast, it is pipping hot and cooked to perfection, it really sets you up for the day. We enjoyed it so much that we have booked again for our next end of quarter celebrations!! Whoopppeeee. Thank you to all at the Exeter Inn for a fantastic weekend, Tim and Amanda.

My family and I were looking for somewhere to have Sunday lunch on a trip to the area recently but it was getting late as we had been out all morning and most pubs had stopped serving lunch at 2pm, but the Exeter Inn serves until 3pm...it was 3pm! We darted in and the staff were so accommodating, there was no annoyance at our late arrival and the lunch was superb! I thought we may get fatty scraps of meat and small dry roast potatos but it was lovely and all our plates were clean, there were no deserts available but they made sure the kids had ice creams. The pub is full of character and personal mementos giving the pub a real character, I particularly liked the piano with the songbook open almost inviting you to take a seat and start a sing song. There were no baby changing facilities but they just told me to use the room at the back of the pub which was carpeted. I know some people may be horrified at this but it just added to the charm of the place because it made me feel as if I was in a friends home rather than a stranger in a pub. (it was clean by the way!!!)There was a small group of people around the bar who were obviously locals. When I spoke to another couple staying at our campsite they said they often visit the area and always go to The Exeter Inn and know the staff well, a popular pub with all it appears.

I have been in the Exeter Inn fairly regularly over the past few years and found the ale to be good and the food satisfactory. The pub is in line with Modbury prices (think £3 - £3.10 for a pint of ale before the VAT rise), but is usualy busy on weekend evenings. The pizzas served are OK, maybe slightly expensive, I wouldn't say they were any better than that, it'd probably be a better idea to stick to the beer and grab something from the Chinese or the White Hart if you were after food. Service is usually prompt and friendly so no complaints there.

absoloutely beautiful pub in a lovely village location enjoyed it thoroughly, as for the bad review in this site where they had bad service we were staying there on the night in question these four chaps were very obnoxious and rude and drunk, the landlord had the right to ask them to leave and we were greatful for this, the staff at the 'X' as they call the pub locally are extremely helpful and kind and very friendly and the landlady is a lovely lady who has done wonders with the place since taking over and is very highly spoken off thankyou for such a memorable holiday fantastic meal and great bar service we will most definately be back in summer 09' thankyou mrs dickens and familyx

We arrived in Modbury looking forward to a nice meal in a traditional pub. One of our party was vegetarian and we discussed our options whilst ordering a pint of real ale. Our first choice was off, the second arrived cloudy and undrinkable. The landlord, or someone who appeared to be the landlord, then arrived having listened and watched us expresing surprise at the lack of even one vegetarian option on the pubs security camera's (!) and told us that if we didn't like the menu then we could leave. In twenty-five years of drinking in pubs around the world, I had never been spoken to in this way. Perhaps I've been lucky. So we left and had a lovely meal elsewhere.A dreadful experience.

We stayed 3 nights, Fri Sat & Sun, very comfortable well furnished room, ensuite, with breakfast (diy) available in little kitchen down the hall. Wonderful old world inn, great bar, and bar food til 8.30 (lunchtime til 5 on Sunday, no evening meal). Very friendly and helpful staff, and wonderful location in the wilds of Dartmoor.

I loved this pub. We walked from Salcombe and it was well worth it (don't worry, you can drive there too). It had the feel of a genuine pub with some good beers that happened to do great food also. I had possibly the best burger I have had in a long time and my wife had a fantastic steak sandwich. Both were freshly prepared scratch. They have vegan options too. I notice some negative reviews, mostly due to poor service. We arrived at 12 noon on a weekday in October. Even so, the place was full by the time we left, so it is clearly a popular place. The service we experienced was without fault. I hope our experience is the norm.

Great late lunch with family, biggest haddock I have ever seen. Had that locally caught ling, calamri and my wife just cheesy chips. All with crispy fresh batter, chips golden but soft inside. Even cheesy chips were top, 1/2 chips, then cheese, more chips and topping of more cheese. All top quality, even the ice cream and with nice pints of Otter, bitter & ale on tap. Great way to end off long walk on the beach. You won’t be disappointed..
