Etta is the perfect hostess. Food was lovely. Particularly enjoyed the fish curry and the fish cakes. Loved the rum cocktail and finished off with delicious banana fritters. Definitely a gem in Brixton Market.

Delicious food, we had the sea bass and seafood curry, both were so aromatic and delicious without being overly rich or too big a portion size. Lovely, polite service and a general feeling that this restaurant is an under the radar hidden gem of wonderful, authentic Caribbean seafood that cares more about its customers enjoying the produce than sycophantic reviews like this

Really charming restaurant with a great selection of Jamaican food, beautiful present and lots of flavour with something for everyone, depending of their dietary needs. The restaurant is located in the Brixton Village so you would need to use the toilet for the site, the restaurant doesn’t have one like all the other premises in the site.

I arrived late on a Sunday evening. Etta was eating her dinner, other places would have seen me as an inconvenience, but not here. Welcoming, friendly and nothing too much trouble. Had THE best ginger beer I’ve ever tasted and then the brown curry fish which was simply beautiful. Freshly cooked, wonderfully spicy and vibrant, just like the cook. Cash only here which is no problem with nearby cash machines. Reasonable pricing for such great food. Well worth the visit.

First time here and what a joy. Most portions aren't huge, but the food is delicious. I wanted to try a bit of everything so ordered the seafood platter, which is £26 with a glass of prosecco, not quite sure why but it does, and it was nice. The platter was great, and you get some ackee too and plantain. My wife and friend ordered the tuna and mussels which were both good but not huge portions. the mac and cheese were superb too. 100% we'll be back

We were recommended this place for good fish and chips, after 40 mins of waiting we got frozen chips from iceland and two small chunks of battered cod. the worst fish and chips ever tasted. The waitress was TERRIBLE with a huge attitude on her shoulders, looked at us with distaste when ordering. don't ask what is in the vegetarian dish the answer will be 'Vegetable' and a stare. Don't bother with this place, bad service, bad food, bad attitude. and not cheap.

We first found Etta’s Kitchen four years ago. Between the Ackee and Saltfish, Sorrel drinks and Salmon Ceviche we knew we had found a special place. Beyond the food, however, Etta is one of the most fabulous people we’ve met. She has a warmth that could heat an igloo in a blizzard. Visiting Brixton for the first time in four years today, we were worried the pandemic may have taken this beloved place but Etta was there with hugs to greet. Today we had Soft Crab curry, Salmon Ceviche, Mac ‘n Cheese, lemonade, and rum punch. It is the finest meal we’ve had in ages and we have had many fine meals in those ages. The curry sauce was perfection. There was not a weak link - everything was as perfect as could be - even the lemonade was sublime. We cannot recommend Etta’s enough. If there is a better restaurant in London, is hasn’t yet opened.

Well….service friendly….all fish disappointedly from frozen packets. Calamari, a bit rubbery with no discerning spice. Salt fish fritters, ok, not quite enough fish and a slight undercooked floury texture and taste. Neither came quite hot enough. Scallop with lime dressing, tiny portion, mainly leaves, a little avocado and tomato. Scallops the size of 1p pieces- shocking value at £13.50! Not quite sure if it’s changed hands since previous reviewers or we ordered the poorer dishes? Certainly not somewhere we would revisit.

Our main dishes included curry seafood and salt fish and ackeee and festival. We loved it all. It was so delicious the service was superb!

And the service, human too - they are themselves in a good and quirky way - these ladies (and gent) different. And the food, top notch! Blessed people, I would definitely recommend food, service (you have to get it) and that you go there. Blessed people that you should bless - they care. It’s in the subtleties you might miss. It was a good choice for me and my family. My mum had nothing but love! And so did we!

Etta’s was perfect, the lobster Mac n cheese was BANGING…the brown stew was BANGING, Etta was AMAZING. Such good quality everything, food, service, price.

This time we had wonderful fresh oysters that tasted exactly like the sea, fantastic mussels and a curry to die for. In fact, the curry is probably the best thing on the menu. Staff are also friendly, informal and helpful. I can’t describe how much better this place is than some of the other, massively over-priced hipster havens in the market. Go here before she’s chased out by Honest Burger or, alternatively, becomes a national sensation, opens restaurants on every street corner and eventually sells to McDonalds.

Andarci? Ottimi e in giuste porzioni entrambi.

Came here for a late lunch and was very impressed. We had osyters to start, which tasted very fresh and came with a very yummy home-made sauce instead of the usual Tabasco. For the main, we had the special - seafood in a spiced coconut sauce with white rice. I will be dreaming about the coconut seafood for months - it was spicy, fresh and completely delicious. Food took a little while to come out but I'm personally not a fan of being rushed through my meal. Etta was really friendly and lovely, as was our waiter. In a nutshell, great food, great service, will definitely be back!

I'm an east London/Essex girl. Only go out in central, east and north London. Never go south of the river (nose bleeds) but Etta has been on my list for years since i ripped out a page from the evening standard. So when my friend and i decided to have a night out in brixton, i told her "we have to go to ettas". We found ettas and looked at the menu outside. A friendly lady from inside beckoned us in and said "come". We thought why not? She said do you want to sit in or outside? We thought let's sit outside so the fish doesn't stink out our hair. We decided to have a couple of dishes to share since we wanted to explore more food elsewhere. We ordered fish cakes and ackee and saltfish with festivals. Whilst we were waiting the lady that had seen us in appeared and said "sorry my auntie said the bread isn't free". I looked bemused and said to my friend "what's she on about? We didn't ask for bread". Apparently when we came in she'd said I'll get you some water and complimentary bread. I hadn't heard that, it was really neither here nor there to me. I don't think i would have bothered to come out to say that if i were her though. I would have swallowed the cost. A bit embarrassing, but honestly i didn't even hear her offer the bread... The fishcakes were nice, although portions on the small sides. I'm particularly comparing to Levi roots where I'd had fishcakes a week ago and the portions were better. We ordered two rum punches and they were nice too, with wray like they should be! The ackee and saltfish came, with brown rice. We ate away. I thought it was nice, my friend thought it was "ok". After we'd eaten it we'd realised it was served with rice and not festivals. I asked the male waiter if they'd run out in a tongue in cheek way. He had to look at the menu where it clearly said festivals to know what we were on about. He apologised and said "would you like a rum punch?" We hadn't finished our rum punch so hesitated, he said "on the house?" Well ok then. Do you know this man brought out 1 rum punch. No problem but actually put two straws in it? Really? We asked for the bill which took ages to get to us as did our change. Brixton has disappointed me. Don't need to come all the way to saaaaarf to get nice Caribbean food and indifferent service. I can get that back 'ome. Honestly surprised they've lasted so long but must be the hipsters that keep it going. Good luck Etta.

I’ve seen a lot of good reviews about the small food outlets in Brixton Village and they are all true! Japanese, Mexican, Brazilian, whatever you want. On this occasion I wanted to eat in a local style, so I chose Etta’s Jamaican Fish Restaurant. One of the mains was Jamaica’s national dish, so I ordered a bowl of salt cod and ackee and a can of cold Red Stripe to suit. Good choice, Barns! The nice lady cooked it from fresh before my very eyes and served it to me with a smile (see photo). A beautiful meal, fishy, salty and a little spicy. I’ll be back.

I had been meaning to visit Etta's for a looong time... but finally I made it! Definitely worth the trip. They have a wide range of seafood dishes - in particular I had the salt cod fritters - just the right level of chewiness and crispiness. The seafood curry really popped well, good flavour, nice mix of fish - would have liked a little more calamari but c'est la vie. The rum punch makes everything go more smoothly. #recommended

Me and my friend were looking for a new place to try in brixton and we decided for this one.The lady was absolutely lovely and really nice with us and the "spaghetti ai frutti di mare" as well but I couldn't drink anything because all the glasses were really dirty, like someone used them before me, I checked the glasses around me and I couldn't find one clean.Sorry but I don't think I will go back.

Having read a few reviews on line, seeing most other restaurants were packed- with tourists & young Londoners and Etta’s was not, we nearly did not go- it transpired Etta’s was just opened for the day.I am so pleased that we went!! How the chef manages to pack so much flavour into the dishes is something that I am still trying to work out! The Fish Soup was outstandingly delicious & packed to the brim with fish, mussels & sweet potato. My very happy taste buds were telling me I was eating proper Caribbean seafood with soul, and not mediocre substitute. I will definitely be eating this again when I want a light meal. I also ordered a disappointing side dish of plantain chips. My fellow diners were delighted with their light and crispy fried Calamari & chips, and the Seafood Spaghetti- which was also packed with flavour. We drank ginger and lime juice, which was refreshing and full of flavour which we thoroughly enjoyed- but not for those who like mild flavoured drinks! The recent refurbishment gives Etta’s a cool and easy going ambiance. The service was not ‘polished’ so I assume the waiter was new to the job, but saying that we all have to start somewhere & he was friendly! The chef was very welcoming & full of Caribbean warmth.I cant wait to go back to try the seafood curry!

Whilst cute and charming outside with the promise of fresh seafood, the actual fare was a different story. Service took very long, despite the restaurant being quite empty. Fresh oysters were certainly not fresh, and ceviche contained salmon that tasted a bit off. Would not revisit.

My friend and I both had the soup which was just (very) spiced water - litteraly very liquid - with a couple of mussels and fish pieces. The water was so spiced we could not manage to drink it and the very few pieces of Sea food/ fish in it did not make our hunger disappear so we went for a cheap McDo burger.. We did complain to the lady, so I hope the recipe will be/ has been improved.

I visited Etta's last night (25th June 2016) with two friends from London. However this was my first time in Brixton Market. The young waiter and owner were so accommodating and helpful. From start to finish the staff could not have been nicer and were extremely friendly. The food was absolutely fantastic and the seafood curry was delicious. The price was very reasonable and potion size was just right. Highly recommended and I will definitely be wanting to go back when I next visit London.

I would not say that I am a huge seafood fan but visited here with friends and was really pleased with their choice of restaurant. Etta is fun and flamboyant and this vibe is much of the same. The menu is limited but nicely so. The dishes I tried were all amazing lots of interesting spicy yet fresh flavours. I shall certainly be returning.

The food here is gorgeous - creative and very yummy seafood with a Caribbean twist. Very fresh ingredients, and lovely spicing. My seafood curry came with rice and beans that were worth the trip in and of themselves, and my husband and daughter loved theirs as well. The drinks list has home made ginger beer (properly spicy and gingery) and the best sorrel I've had in years. The wine we didn't try, but I was somewhat intrigued (not to mention concerned) by an offering of "Chenin blanc rose"... perhaps stick to the rum punch.Service was very friendly and helpful, but at Caribbean pace. Not somewhere for a swift lunch. But definitely worth a visit.

Having walked past this restaurant several times we finally decided to visit, it's hard when there are so many options. The look is cannes beach front contemporary and had us looking to the menu in the window which turned out to be modern caribean. The akee and salt fish soup starter was an interesting twist and full off flavour just disappointed the salt fish hadn't a hint of salt rinsed or boiled to an inch of its life. The calamari was great however as not at all runners and very fresh. Then if went downhill, never asked if we wanted water or a refill of drinks, at a table outside ignored and not attended to unless we stood or waved through the glass. Simple service details such as checking and asking if you are ok and how your first course and then second course was. Not offering dessert menu ...only knew there was dessert when we looked through the window. The tables inside weren't served extra drinks unless they waved too. The main course seafood soup with vermellici was soooo dissapointing - chunks of garlic si it became a garlic broth lacking salt and hard toughened prawns obviously overcooked while the vermellici was cut into baby mouthfuls. It looked elegant but didn't live up to its look. The squid stuffed with mince had a flavourful punchy cumin rice and was an interesting combination. Overall dissapointing and appeared slightly pretentious in its aspirations and didn't deliver on taste, quantity or service. It's a shame as it appeared different and interesting initially but with all the choice in the village we won't be returning.

Wanted something different from the pop up bars doing cocktails with cheese boards, burgers or pizza places. Etta's has only a few tables, as my friend and I looked at the menu a woman came out raving about the creviche fish. However mainly afro-carribean fish things on the menu, some veggie options, rice and peas, seafood curry, seafood pasta, interesting soups and brief but decent wine list. There was a really warm friendly atmosphere, not much room and you might be asked if you mind sharing a table. Reasonable size portions, I couldnt mange a pudding. Would definitely go back, I had the jamacian fish currywith rice and peas and my friend a cod dish with egg and aspargus.

We just turned up and wandered round the various little eateries until we spotted Etta's and decided to go for seafood. No airs or graces just a relaxed Caribbean welcome, no fuss and no rush. The prawn and mango cocktail was big on prawns - really good. We all had the seafood curry which was ok without being dazzling but great for such a little place. Very friendly ambience and would go again

We decided to go with a couple of seafood lover friends who were keen on trying Caribbean style cuisine. What a disappointing experience! The restaurant was basically empty compared to the bustling atmosphere of Brixton Market on a Thursday night...suspicious! The menu was short & sweet, as timeout reviewed, and looked appetizing, even if we were desperately trying to ignore the thick fumes of stale frying oil lingering in the air and seeping into our clothes and hair (which we graciously kept until we ran into the shower as we got home!). We ordered a couple of starters; calamari rings with a salad, fish fritters, jerk-prawns, accompanied by a fish burger and sides of rice & peas and plantain chips. It was all too oily and cold by the time it arrived to our table, as the waitress wanted to wait for everything to be cooked in order to bring it all at the same time. Cold calamari rings with three salad leaves (did I mention this starter came with a salad and not a decorative mushy leaf bed an the bottom of the plate?), room temperature fish fritters that were so greasy (the bad kind of greasy) that a pool of cold used oil would form as your fork pressed on their surface. The fish burger's bread looked like it could've been bought in Iceland and the plantain chips were hard and oily whist the rice & peas were cold and tasteless. All this for a £38 bill! A couple finally entered the restaurant as we were trying to eat some food, despite the general disgust. As their food was served and they tried it, their faces said it all! They were as repulsed as we were, leaving with less money in our pockets and a bad taste in our mouths, smelling like stale fat!

We wanted to try something new and were really looking forwards at the dishes. We order the mussels which were ok....but extra small. It is a main dish the size of an appetaizer. The seafood curry was the biggest dissapointment though. Literally 3 pieces of overcook fish, 2 praws, 2 calamary rings and 2 mussels. No sauce just a yellow thing on the plate....and tasted as bad as it looked. And the prices were ludacris considering the portions and the quality of the food.
