Esquires Coffee in Guildford

What a downhill change in general since change of staff. Rubbish bag overflowing by till, shelves need wiping over, girl serving coffee dirty trousers and muddy trainers, stock room door open and overflowing. Man serving pulling trousers up and scratching. Washing up everywhere. Not nice anymore.

Lovely staff and lovely coffee, greeted as soon as we arrived with a smile. Great food and cool music in the background. Thank you again (this is our no1 spot for coffee in Guildford)

Great Coffee, Great Location, great staff and great value. Every time we come to Guildford this is our pit stop for a bite to eat and a coffee. The music is fantastic and just loud enough so you can enjoy it and still have a chat.

The coffee shop is so beautiful but the red velvet cupcake tasted like it was made last week. The coffee was good. Maybe better on another day?

I’ve been using this coffee shop for coffee and breakfast at least once a week for the last few months. The food is lovely with a great selection, the coffee is fantastic and the staff are friendly and helpful. I would like to praise and can specifically mention Tara Jaz Martina and Kasia as friendly and go the extra mile to help their customers. I see many many happy regulars which to me speaks volumes.

We’ve been going to the cafe for quite some time and the food use to be good but it recent months the quality of the food had rapidly dropped and it isn’t worth the money. It is very disappointing and we won’t be going again. See photo of my £5.95 sandwich. Wanted to contact them directly on their web but it isn’t accessible.

The staff are great. I pop in every other day during the week. The coffee is always spot on and I highly recommend the pulled pork panini if you run out of ideas for a quick lunch :).

Coffee is fantastic here and the toasties are lovely. Only thing that is a big no no from me is that the sandwiches come in a paper bag which is great but then they place the toastie in a polystyrene box to takeaway! Please please please get some small cardboard boxes to replace these! For a vegetarian friendly coffee house you would expect them to be strict with recyclable materials! Other than that the place is really nice!

Great little cafe - nicely decorated, comfortable and open early. Had breakfast here two consecutive mornings. Delicious vegan full English, freshly made and served piping hot in no time at all. Great value for money too. It was quite busy the second day I was there and the staff were clearly working extremely hard. Will definitely be back when next in Guildford!

Came here a few times for a coffee and croissant and the staff were always very friendly and attentive. Would recommend

I was served by a middle aged women with purple (ish) hair. We ordered two iced coffees, one with sugar and one without. I asked this particular women to add the sugar to the espresso. She rolled her eyes and pointed to the self served station and said ‘over there, you do it yourself’ to my disgust I said, no because I didn’t want crunchy sugar in the bottom of my ICED coffee. She rolled her eyes again, and said ‘ummmm, ok’. She began making the drinks and smiled at her colleague and she conveniently forgot to add the sugar. I grabbed the coffees and left quickly. This is absolutely disgraceful. This women needs a serious lesson in customer service, or more appropriately a job that requires no human interaction. Never again. Don’t worry, I will spread this message to anyone and everyone, so others don’t waste their money like I did.... TWICE.

I have visited this coffee shop on and off since it opened. I like the coffee and the maple pecan slice! However I cannot accept the rude service from the young lady on the till. She spends time on her phone, tells customers the closing time rather aggressively towards the end of the day and is generally rude. Not just to me but to most customers. I also disliked some of her hygiene practices. The man seems pleasant but she needs to go.

What can I say.. the coffee is not bad, but the staff...Really guys? We are paying customers and need a bit more respect. I’m so sad for this place because I love a good artisan coffee, but I won’t return due to rudeness and hostility in the atmosphere.

Called in for a coffee to split a journey. Very nice Latte, friendly and helpful staff. Would definitely recommend

I have been visiting the Guildford Esquires for a couple of months. Customer service is 100% and there are sweet and savoury nibbles should the fancy take you.

Coffee here is nice and there is a few options for a lunch, seating here was limited but overall enjoyed

Great little coffee shop in Guildford selling excellent food and coffee with friendly attentive staff. The music is cool too. Once inside you could easily be in New York or San Francisco as far as atmosphere is concerned. Pay a visit.

Visited this week for coffee and a snack. Told oven not working so couldn’t have sausage roll. Coffee was luke warm and muffin tasted stale. Didn’t think the coffee shop looked particularly clean either. Felt we wasted £7 +. Will not visit again as we were also disappointed on previous visit. This cafe has a great position and should be thriving.

I want to thank Chase and Oliver for an amazing experience - Chase Pitten in particular was an amazing host, barista, and chef and for breakfast he made me an amazingly healthy yet deliciously fulfilling meal! In fact all the staff including Oliver made me feel welcome and comfortable I initially came to the coffee shop thinking it would just be another generic coffee shop! but i soon found out how wrong i was! Great experience, great team, great atmosphere - I will definatly be recommending this spot to all my friends!! Regards,

I go here two to three times per week for the past 6 months. The food is always good but the service ranges from okay at best to dreadful. A few observations, the staff never smile, they work in slow motion , the Franchisee looks out of the window whilst the staff struggle. Oh and if you order a sandwich you may get salad or crisps or both? Always interesting to see what they decide to give you and just because the person before you gets salad is no indication of whether you will get it . A real shame because the food is good but place a shambles.

Costa or Pret could wipe the floor with this place when it comes to staff. Coffee is good cakes are not they taste shop bought. No music and no atmosphere. The waitress looks down her nose at customers as if we were an inconvenience. Pity it has a nice design but it’s people that make the difference.

Nice coffee, pleasant service and a small selection of sandwiches and snacks. It is pleasant enough, but there is little to distinguish it from a national chain.

I used to visit this store when it first opened, it was great, there was a lovely female manager and the staff were great. Now they seem to have a huge turnover of staff every month and I don't see the lovely lady who used to be there or any management at all, it's disappointing. Where do I start, you walk up to the shop, the A Board just shouldn't be there unless they are going to put something nice on it. It looks crap, get someone with some creativity to write something nice, an in store promotion, a nice picture, or get a local typographer to put a lame quote down about coffee. You enter, food is OK, however overpriced, I expect this. They have little name tags written in chalk, they're grubby, illegible. I wait in queue, thank god for the decor (minus the dog silhouettes, we'll see whether the pug hype dies before this store does), the music is great the furniture is lovely, it's a bit small but what else can they do about that now. A gentleman before me ordered a bacon roll for 3.50, I then order, I ask the girl how many slices do you get, she responded with 3. I then pause and stare at the guy now making the previous bacon roll and he puts 2 slices in the oven. Ok I won't take a bacon roll thank you. The girl (who is so miserable and should not be talking to customers and cleaning the floor and doing dishes just chucks the ticket onto the chopping board. You look at the food prep area, jesus christ someone give these guys some training, they might as well not have different coloured chopping board and knifes, I wouldn't be here if I had an allergy or was vegi/vegan and didn't want the knife touching the wrong board etc. Then finally the coffee, why I am here in the first place, previously I have ordered an almond and vanilla late small, can not taste the vanilla at all and it was so wet that it tasted like dish water and I didn't drink it. This time the almond milk quality was better but again no vanilla. Maybe the almond flavour overpowers the vanilla? Maybe they should have some training and say something and suggest another syrup that would come through a little more, maybe they should say that they're going to add more however it might be too sweet and then I can make up my own mind. Just maybe someone should be training and there should be much clearer leadership. Whoever cleans the glass display should practice some more. This is all from waiting in line, who knows what I'll see if I actually sit in store. If the owner would like to contact me this is fine, I want to help my local coffee store.

Miserably wet shopping made good by Esquires's superb latte. Nice to see an independent doing something better than the ubiquitous chains.

Literally the friendliest staff who clearly enjoy working there. They are very attentive and hospitable and make it a lovely environment. Good coffee and food.

Visit here several mornings a week and the service is always very friendly and the coffee great. The atmosphere is very relaxed and friendly

The coffee here was okay but the staff are very unwelcoming. They are also constantly on their phones behind the counter, which I know to be the number 1 no-no in customer service. The staff are dismissive when serving you - they seem to want to do it as quickly as possible, the man serving me was extremely dismissive just so he could go back on his phone as soon as possible. Quite rude! The staff also seem to get on well but are keen to talk about what they are doing at the weekend/their personal lives very loudly in front of customers.

My default coffee shop, amongst an increasingly crowded market - I generally end up here, because I know the coffee is always excellent, the toasted paninis are very good, and the cakes interesting (tried the Dime/Deim Cake?).

Popped in here for lunch on a whim and really impressed!

Lovely little place for a cup of great coffee. Has a great non rushed relaxed atmosphere. Feel at home here and can just sit, relax and enjoy good coffee. Come here whenever I'm in town

I came here with a friend for some lunch on a Saturday. We found a place to sit and went and ordered - we both went for the salmon and cream cheese bagel. We were informed that they had unfortunately run out of bagels but we were more than welcome to have it on anything else. This wasn't a problem so my friend chose to have it in a baguette and I chose toast.

I've visited other branches and they all appear very similar. I find it a bit pricey compared to other cafes. Ok cake selection. Nice coffee. The service was really slow. Not sure why the staff couldn't multi task but there was one person making a list of coffees while two other staff just pottered around. Wifi. Nice big window onto street. Overall a nice coffee shop.

Difficult position to attract shopping punters right at the top of high street but worth the walk for a great Americano which is what we went for and was busy this Tuesday. Spoilt a bit by my jacket potato with tuna where the tuna had been whipped into a smooth paste with mayo or cream or something which made it overpoweringly rich and not very pleasant. My wife enjoyed her sandwich. Would definitely come back again but would have something different

Dropped in to this beautiful coffee shop a few weeks ago to try and escape the rain- I had the wonderful avocado on toast and I was very impressed with the size of the portion compared to other places! The staff were very friendly and willing to help- especially a young girl with dark hair who was so smiley- thank you! Will definitely visit again!

Ignore Starbucks, Costa, Cafe Nero and walk just a little further along....excellent coffee, delicious food, lovely service.

Lovely food... small but perfect portions for us, great tea/coffee, great service, halloween decor raised some smiles, warm and relaxing - perfect after morning of being a tourist.

With so many coffee shops it's difficult to find a newer establishment that can provide good if not better coffee then the other cafes in town. Esquires however provides some good coffee. There are also treats which look delicious (I enjoyed the lemon drizzle slice which was very tasty).

It's a quiet Thursday afternoon, the staff were friendly, and it was easy to find a table.

I shall start on the positives. This is a lovely little cafe, set in a nice position in Guildford. Attractive interior, but small, which has been previously mentioned. Gorgeous array of cakes on display. Generally a good selection for a small cafe. Toilet clean & a good size

Nice environment with comfortable seating areas. Although it is on the small side which is nice when your seated but can mean getting seated is difficult.

Delicious pastries Well-prepared and high quality drinks Smart and relaxing decor. Indolent and morose staff..... and this last ingredient is so vital in a cafe, especially in such a competitive High Street environment - and easy enough to get right.

Comfortable and friendly atmosphere, great for coffee and cake. Gluten free options limited, otherwise great.

I'd been to the Woking Esquires regularly and loved it, so I was disappointed when it shut down. I'm glad to now see the franchise revived in Guildford.

They have very nice coffee here, and a very good value sausage or bacon roll; or scrambled egg poo n toast for breakfast.

A pleasant addition at the top of town, which was lacking a coffee shop. Good range of drinks and food, including plenty of gluten free options. Relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Limited tables due to size.

Comfy, cosy, small, quirky, relaxed - a nice addition to Guildford café scene. The food was good and coffee really good.
