English Raj in Sedgemoor

Disappointed with this place really . No taste in the food and the rice and nan bread tasted off felt bad through the night .

The staff were friendly and the food was OK. However, the restaurant was tired and not very clean. The table cloths were dirty/ mouldy, and we felt like leaving as soon as we sat down, but it felt awkward. The location near the funeral director and the long entrance to get to the back of the building entrance are not very welcoming either. Would definitely not return .

The worst curry i have ever had. Poppadoms stale prawn curry tasted of nothing cold rice and sag, reheated roti peshawar nann just a few coconut flakes inside. Complained to the Man in charge when presented with a 50.00 pound bill to be told nothing he could do apart from tell the owner who was apparently not around, although he told us he had been at the restaurant 40 years. Never again and avoid like the plague.

The food was tepid warm at best no flavour when the lime pickle from a jar had more spice and flavour that basically says it all. We arrived when only 3 people were already seated . Never again.

When you order food you expect to get what you order ? Very disappointed won’t bother using you again I’ll take my money somewhere els .

The main was fine, but the ice cream was inedible. It looked like it had been scraped from the bottom of an old tub, strings of hardened ice cream. When I mentioned this I was not dealt with fairly and it has put us off going back. We have gone there for years!

Really friendly welcome. This is a very long established restaurant and is very well regarded in Bridgwater. Always a smile and very good value and service.

Charming good value in a Bridgwater legend

First time trying this place and what a treat!! Was a last minute decision to try here at 9pm on Friday night with some friends. We were welcomed in and seated comfortably straight away, was fairly busy there. We ordered drinks which were fine. We ordered popadoms to start and for mains we ordered a Korma, a chicken Balti, a lamb Pathia and a lamb Savwala. We all ordered naan’s/Chipattis and rice. Everyone loved their meals and we all tried each others. Mine was the sagwala, safe to say it was the best I’ve had so I’ve officially found my new Indian restaurant and take away. All of the Staff were all so lovely, we had a nice chat with a couple of members. Over all we rate it 10/10 it was a lovely evening. And very good value for money.

Just been to English Raj and ordered 2 chicken tikka masala and 2 peshwari nanns. Absolutely fantastic food. Best take away I have had for a very long time.

After using the Raj for the best part of 25 years, last night was the pits. Service was so bad it was a joke. 45 mins before popadoms and drinks arrive. Starters slow coming too and not all correct. Mains just the same. We had all eaten before one of the party had had their meal and the naans arrived as we finished. Food 5/5 as always, but the sevice 0/5. I don’t know if management has changed or what the issue was but we will be taking our curry nights else where.

Generous portions of very good food, a relaxed comfortable atmosphere and excellent staff 👌 I intend to return regularly.

It's such a shame , lovely the food. But the dinner service. Was so unorganised. Other tables being served , who came afterr. 13 of us . We still haven't been offered drinks or poppadoms . After 2 hours wait. We finely received our meal.

This is another one of those places in Bridgwater that has been there since the 70's and the food is same now as it was then, excellent. In the same vein as Pak Lok Chinese takeaway in Bridgwater that has also been around since the 70's, others come, they are all good at the start then usually fade into obscurity. Its the consistency that make these places special.

Lovely meal as ever but bill was wrong . Tried to overcharge us and when questioned threw the bill at us . Not necessary at all given that we were very polite about the error. They have tried this before but we won’t be back. Shame as it is a great little restaurant but customer service is so important and not that hard to get right

The service was wonderful. Our waiter was so attentive and accommodating. Brilliant ambiance,felt so nostalgic of what a proper Indian restaurant should be. Overall, this was an incredible dining experience. I had a great experience at this restaurant! Also no idea what this jamesP is on about I reckon he is just talking nonsense. Everytime I go to this business they guys all always professional and kind.

First time we have used the English raj for a while .its a proper iandian restaurant . the food standards have not dropped.our meals were both fantastic and very tasty .Great service from kadir a very friendly happy guy nothing is to much trouble for him .we popped in early to miss the crowds at 17.30.will definitely be back soon thank you kadir and staff

Food was ok, but shocked to see them washing up the plates/knives/forks/ in cold water by the bar when we went to pay!! No sponge or detergent used just his hands! We were very worried when we left as we saw that what was the kitchen going to be like? Luckily we weren't ill as we were travelling. They also used clean table clothes to dust the chairs off then it was placed on the table!

Although their website and Tripadvisor inclusion advises that this restaurant opens for lunch every day, this is incorrect.

We are new to the neighbourhood and wanted to find a restaurant that lived up to the one in our previous area. We tried The English Raj on the recommendation from a few people in our village, which is always a good sign! We were not disappointed, this is a no nonsense, old style Indian Restaurant with the most amazing fresh, tasty curries and excellent table service. We have found our place! We won’t bother to look elsewhere. The English Raj is an absolute Gem

What a gem! We came in for dinner when we were passing through Bridgewater for a weekend away. Found this place based on reviews on Google. Food was super tasty and the waiters were really kind and looked after us really well. Would definitely recommend.

December 2020 Wanted to help my favourite local restaurant. Cause of the lock down sadly English Raj is servicing only takeways, hopeful for a short time. On Tuesday to Sunday 5:30pm to 9pm. If it's the first time trying the taste of curry, try a satisfying Meat Korhi Raj. The taste and flavour is amazing. I also loved the taste Balti king Prawn with fresh ginger, garlic, green peppers and specially selected spices giving the real taste of Balti food.

A midweek birthday treat we arrived and immediatley taken to our reserved table. The waiter was very helpful with our menu choices and prepared to tweak a dish to suit our taste. Didn`t have to wait too long for the excellent food to arrive, the temperature of the food was hot and they still use the tea light heaters; however the very young water waiter was slightly surley or was he just nervous, but anyway no big deal, the wine, nicely chilled was as always (in my opinion) slightly overpriced. We shall be in the area again in January and will certainly return.

Booked a table for 5 people on Saturday night for 8:30pm, arrived about 20 minutes past 8 only to be told that the table wasn't ready and to come back in half an hour. Went to the pub for a drink and returned at 9pm, table still not available and we were generally ignored by the staff despite asking several times when our table would be ready. Finally about 9:15 we were told that a table would be available in a few minutes but we then noticed looking around the restaurant, that there were a quite a few tables waiting for their food. I asked the four people at the nearest table to where we were standing, how long they had been waiting for food and they said that their starter had been served over an hour ago and that they were still waiting for their main course. We decided that as there was going to be such a long wait for the food, we would leave and find somewhere else to eat. We were all extremely annoyed that even after making a definite booking that we were unable to eat at the Raj, I don't know if there was a staffing problem on Saturday night, but if you can't supply the service for pre-booked customers, then don't take the booking. I have used the English Raj on many occasions but due to this experience I shall think twice before visiting again.. P Chandler & friends.

Been here for sit down meals and take aways. Always perfect food, great service and excellent value for money compared to some of the other restaurants in Bridgwater.

My favourite Indian restaurant. Their food is absolutely delicious and I feel they are more traditional curries compared to other restaurants in town. We order different curries every time we go so we've tasted a few and never felt disappointed. The prices are really reasonable. The staff are really attentive and just generally nice people. I do not have anything negative to say about The English Raj. I would recommend this place every time.

Went here for a Birthday and yet again never fails to be better than the last time. Had a lovely meal and all staff where very friendly and great to chat with if you wanted to. Look forward to the next time.😀

On my annual visit to Bridgwater to see my mother. We always go for an Indian meal together. We chanced upon the English Raj which is a little off the high street. The interior is pleasantly reminiscent of a large living room. The staff were friendly and helpfully offered suggestions without being pushy. We had the vegetable biryani and shrimp vindaloo. I like very hot curry dishes and this one was pretty hot and to my liking. The nan was well done. They had a good range of drinks. Some other reviews complained about the wine list but I didn't have wine so I can't comment either way. I had Kingfisher Indian beer which was chilled and very good. Overall, I can't fault the place. At £40 for two of us with me drinking a couple of pints of beer it was reasonable for a night out. I can recommend this restaurant. I think it is better to book in advance. We went there on a weekday early evening and it was already fairly busy. There were people waiting for a table by the time we left.

Dinner for three middle aged Irish golfers on a Saturday evening. Walked in on spec to be greeted oddly and coldly. We’re placed at a table next to a rather drunken group, but fortunately they left within minutes of our arrival. The floor around our table was covered in spilled food which was off putting. Shared appetizers and each individual ordered an entree. I had one of the house fish specialties and it was very good. The appetizers were unexceptional but acceptable. Wine list was awful, but we ploughed through it and found something tolerable. TheIndian beer was cold and delicious. Service was amusingly eccentric and unpredictable. Bill for the evening was 73 pounds which was very reasonable. Overall, the place needs sharpening up in every respect.

Unfortunately visited as a group on an early Wednesday evening and it wasn't the best experience. There was 18 in the group and many orders of the orders taken arrived incorrect. Some not arriving at all. One in particular was cooked to order late and was presented with raw onions as there wasn't time to cook them!!! There were two meals presented that were not even ordered and were left on the table and taken away when clearing the tables. To be fair the owner recognised their mistake apologised profusely and took the mistake into consideration when presenting the bill.

Very warm reception. The host was very talkative and welcoming. Had the balti lamb extra hot (madras style$ and it was excellent . Tasty food with good rice. Also had the papadum with good churned and the chapatti. Can't fault the food. Good portions and flavoursome. Clean restaurant and good decor. Will return and thoroughly recommend

Came here on a banquet night with work colleagues and it was very good value for money. Lovely food as usual as my family and I have been having restaurant meals and takeaways from here for years. Definitely recommend for a lovely curry.

Good service but the food was nothing special, and I asked for Cobra bottled beer, the first one I had came in the bottle, the other two beers may have been from the draft pump as the bottle was not taken to the table, the glass simply came back to the table refilled.

I haven't eating there, but ordered take away. Food wasn't as ordered same as charges, however food was good and that is fact. I am planning to have my dinner there and hoping to have that what I am ordering rather that what waiting staff will bring. I will definitely give this place a go.

Walking through Bridgwater town centre, I happened across this restaurant and decided to give it a try, the food was good, the wine, hmm, not a good wine list and I feel they should show you what's on offer and you should see the bottle being opened and know what it is.

This used to be the best curry house in Bridgwater, but over the last couple of years has become decidedly hit and miss as to what you're going to get. They seem to have shifted emphasis away from small intimate groups to large loud/rowdy groups.

Chicken bhuna was delicious. Cosy atmosphere and very friendly staff.

Restaurant is in need off updating looks very scruffy and not to clean food is not the best , service needs to be improved waiters not very sociable wont be going back

We have been here lots of times , but it gone down hill.the food was small portions eg small cup of rice.and no taste .,then when paying for your bill ,you are offered mints in an old after eight box which contained cheap pound shop mints. O dear

After being disappointed at a chain Italian we popped in here on the off chance they could fit us in.

Staff were polite and chatty but this place wasn't for us. The korma was watery and the madras tasted like it had been reheated several times because it was thick and burnt tasting. I just couldn't eat it. Rice portions too small and popadoms tasted like they had been cooked in old oil. Paper napkins and no hot flannel. Didn't feel like value for money. Won't be back I'm afraid.

Lovely food. Reasonably priced and the staff were very friendly. Highly recommended for people passing through like ourselves.

The Service was very good and frindly. The meal was authentic Indian and realy lush. Not just vegetarian person get a good meal also people with coeliac disease.

The service I must say was very good. The food seemed to be missing the spices. My husband sauce was meant to be creamy, it wasn't and just tasted of tomatoes there wasn't even spice even when mild. The food generally wasn't seasoned. This was our second time, the 1st was over 10years ago we now remember why. The people were friendly tho.

Visited the English Raj, last night with two friends. Authentic Indian cuisine, brilliant food and amazing value for money. Three courses for nine pounds fifty, this is available on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. The owner who served us was charming and very friendly. This is the best Indian restaurant in Bridgwater. Can't wait to return.

Absolutely the best Indian for miles around. Tried all of the other similar restaurants in this area- Bridgwater/Taunton, and although some are quite good, the Raj, is head and shoulders better than the rest.

The English Raj is a safe bet if you're looking for Indian food in the Bridgwater area. The meals were very tasty and came in reasonable quantities. The place itself is nicely decorated and clean. The staff was pleasant and very welcoming. Finally, it is quite cheap for what you get! So all in all, a very good experience!

Its quite good. Probably my favourite of the Indian restaurants in Bridgwater. Not very expensive. Not a patch on the Spice Gallery in North Petherton, however much less expensive so depends what you are after.

Highly recommend this place for a good curry , I’m not very adventurous but they recommended a dish and even if I didn’t like it they would change it for me , couldn’t fault their service or food , definitely go again

The most authentic and classic curry in our town!! The venue is old but GOLD and drives home the whole experience!! The staff are top quality and always make you feel really welcome and to top it off the food is amazing!!! Everyone needs to eat here!!! Even Jesus would flick of his flip flops for curry here!!!!

Easily one of the best curry restaurants in the South West. Excellent traditional decoration, very friendly staff with a great attitude!

Been here a couple of times...the food is delicious....I had lamb balti my partner had lamb bhuna...it’s the best food we have had for a very long time....the owner and the staff are very polite and friendly.....service was very good....give it a go....you won’t be disappointed.....
