Called around lunchtime very busy but staff spot on clearing tables & sanitizing them. Queuing system for food but moved quickly. My one criticism Scones on counter where queuing takes place & not under cover a definite NO for me. People standing over them, coughing, pulling their hair. NO NO NO. A railway with two engines running around the whole cafe. Children would love it. Nice food, pleasant staff.

Scrambled egg was the best I've ever had. It's was cooked to perfection. We do visit quite a bit and normally have a full English (also good), but plumped for the eggs on toast this time. Only slight improvement would be to use a better bread than standard brown, but that is just a tiny quibble!

If you have food intolerances don't go - they cannot cope - Sunday lunch if you have gluten and lactose intolerances ended up as chicken, part roast potatoes and carrots along with something watery I think was gravy.

Visited today for the first time with my mother and sister. I had the steak and ale pie and my family had the crustless quiche. All parties chose cake to take away. We found staff very polite and helpful, loved the atmosphere and clean surroundings. The food was lovely, especially the pie and the cake went down a treat once I arrive home with it back in Hull after dropping my mother off. I will certainly be back again. Loved the garden centre too!

Lovely selection of meals and cakes. We hadn't intended to stay for lunch but it smelt so good we had to stay and eat. Good sized restaurant, with outside seating for warmer weather. The restaurant is upstairs but there is a lift so the less fit can access it. The garden centre is below and had so much to offer, both indoors and outside.

We visited the restaurant for lunch, big mistake, specials had sold out so we chose off the menu, steak and ale pie, one with chips and one with mash, both with veg. The food came within reasonable time but not was ordered, so back it went to the kitchen then re-appeared not even Luke warm, more was left on the plate than eaten. Front of house are very pleasant and efficient Just a shame the kitchen chef SORRY cook IS NOT UP SERVING QUALITY FRESH FOOD

As we had been to Malton today, thought we would come back via Pickering and call in. Sadly, weather wasn’t conducive to looking round properly outside, but looked to be some good deals to be done on garden furniture. My wife fancied a drink and although we didn’t go to the main restaurant there is a small area of tables close to the checkout, but it was littered with plates and cups from a previous meal, so we didn’t fancy it and we went to have a look round the shopping area. Bought a couple of items and went to pay and we were served by a disinterested lady who was more concerned about going for a fag break than us. However, we went down to an area we hadn’t looked at, and my wife saw some things that she liked for our garden birds, so we gathered up 3 items and returned to pay. We had to wait as the previous young lady had been joined by a colleague who had purchased a box of chocolates and been challenged to see how many she could put in her mouth at once. (11 was the total) before we could part with our £50 making about £70 spent in total. Now I’m not without a sense of humour, but this behaviour is best kept to the staff area really. Think a bit of staff training is in order. Will be a while before we return.

Having enjoyed a pork Sunday lunch on two previous occasions I found visit 3 had my very favourite roast beef & Yorkshire pudding on the menu. What a disappointment when a very bare plate arrived with a cremated y pudding 3 slices of tough beef & a blob of mashed potato ?. I asked for some horseradish sauce at the counter which was advertised &on returning to my meal realised there were no roast potatoes either.I again returned to counter to request some roast potatoes and a plate was brought with two minute halves &two bit ends of burnt potato. The Yorkshire pudding had certainly been cut out of cardboard & then cremated making the meal inedible. I had observed two ladies on an an adjoining table struggling with their meal &seeing how much they left asked their opinion. They were regular eaters there &said it was very poor. I had enquired about Xmas lunch only to be told they were fully booked. On reflection I was very pleased. The counter serving staff were very polite but the food on this occasion was unacceptable. I will not be eating there in future.

What’s has happened to place we enjoyed? We ordered gammon and egg and 3 bean chilli. Plus chips, tea cake and one dessert., plus drinks. The three been Chilli was terrible. It had been reduced so much by overcooking that you could taste burning and concentrated sauce that was uneatable. The tea cake was like a biscuit. We quietly told the server. She looked at us as though we were making it up even though she registered we were regular guests. We said please can you deliver our feedback ? She said yes but didn’t move. Then said would we like another tea cake!! We didn’t take it further but we’re very saddened at the response we received.

A place of contradiction? Nice open setting, clean and comfortable seating and in a nod to the railways, a couple of small trains running in opposing directions around and above the café.We tried The Steam and Moorland Café after twice attending another local café, The Cedar Barn, where, on each occasion we attended, because of our timetable at about 11.15am, we were told that we were between breakfast and lunch menu’s and we could not therefore have a lunch but as we didn’t want a breakfast our options were limited.Imagine our surprise then when at a similar time, but a new location, we asked for a breakfast and a sausage and cheese melt, together with drinks, only to be told that we couldn’t have our cheese melt as breakfasts were still being served until 11.30am. There was no mention of a time limit on the menu, other than breakfast being available until midday? I asked, politely, if it would be possible to provide a cheese melt as it was only 10 minutes before this random cut off time only to be told that the chef was cooking breakfasts and could not cook this alternative even though it was on the menu. Two breakfasts it had to be then. The drinks were included in the very reasonable price and served immediately, the meals would be cooked to order and delivered to our table shortly. When the breakfasts were served, they were well presented and well cooked, toast was served separately in our chosen option of brown. We began eating our meals and were pleased with them but had to smile when only minutes later another couple sat on the next table and each was served a fine looking sausage and cheese melt. Without looking at our watches we could only assume that the clock had worked it’s way around to the magic 11.30 am time slot where the chef felt able to cook that option and the breakfasts which were still available for another half hour?I’m not sure if Pickering has a special emphasis on what time certain foods should be served but whilst we enjoyed our food in this café it provided as many questions as answers and left us feeling somewhat puzzled as to why all options were not available throughout the day?

Great if you want a bad neck and swivel eyes. Don't quite catch on to the theme here. My wife and I chose the Full English Breakfast. Breakfast is always a good indication of quality of food. I'm afraid the indications weren't good. Poor quality, very salty bacon, non descript sausage, dubious mushrooms (probably tinned) a non runny egg but at least the black pudding was black. Not a good sign for me when tomato ketchup is in a sachet unnamed and unbranded and this was reflected in the taste and consistency; a bland sauce of sorts. High price for por quality. My wife and I took my mother-in-law for lunch. She has mobility problems. There is a lift to the first floor and then everything is level and spacious. We each just had a main course costing around £8 and all three were very well cooked and tasty and filling. In particular the vegetables weren't overcooked which is often a problem in a place that can cater for quite a lot of people. We all agreed that it would be nice to go back.

Arrived and ordered lunch wife had scampi I had a chicken srwe with potatoes and carrots and beans substantial and tasty. Scampi with garden peas but the chips poh dear why do they do it frozen oven chips yuck not worth getting fat for ! It is what it is though and the place was packed but the staff coped really well! Toilets were spotless. The bottom of the stairs leading to the resteraunt has an 18th centuary chest of drawers which is used as the most valuable display unit I have ever seen. If I were the owner that would be moved and quick!

Went in early Saturday morning for breakfast before going into Pickering for the Wartime Weekend. My wife and I had the eggs benedict. It came with two perfect poached eggs and a slice of superb Yorkshire ham. The following day was rainy so we paid another visit for Sunday lunch. Again, this was excellent. Service was good and efficient, although it did get busy later. The garden centre seemed to have everything and the staff were very friendly. Altogether a very pleasant experience.

Love this place. Just so easy to park, mooch around the garden centre and lovely shop. coffee and cakes always good. the staff very friendly. very comfortable seating and terrace outside overlooking garden If you have a dog you are allowed to eat on the terrace. Usually have the steak and ale pie. Best ever! can also recommend afternoon tea but you need to book in advance i think for that. Always nice and clean and fairly quick service. Ask for a loyalty card which gives you about 10% off food bill

Been here a few times and had a few meals off the lunchtime menu. Overall fairly average. However this morning whilst travelling home from the war weekend at Pickering sampled the full English breakfast. It was very good. Lovely bacon a nice sausage and fried egg. Black pudding mushrooms tomatoes and beans in a seperate pot, All very well cooked and not smothered in fat. Included in the price was toast marmalade and a coffee or tea. Highly recommended the breakfast good quality and excellent price in a nice clean modern environment.

We visited today with my elderly parents. We ordered and were told it was a twenty minute wait which was fine but forty minutes later the food arived. They were really busy under pressure. The waitress who cleared out table was not pleasant and snapped at my mum who has dementia and was trying to help clear things. This upset me has things get difficult enough. However we would return and the food was very nice. I just think when your having a bad day under pressure. It takes the same time to be nice .

Have been to the garden centre a few times but had not really noticed the restaurant or balcony before as it is upstairs. Was a hot weekend so day outside, with lovely views of the centre and over the World's. It was after 3 so missed the hot food but had excellent sausage roll and veggie roll. Tea was very reasonable and did a good coffee. Friendly staff. Also liked the model trains inside!

This is a lovely place but let down by how chaotic it was . I got two scones and two coffees took the scones to our table and was told the drinks would be brought across, The scones were hard ( certainly not fresh ) I had trouble biting mine I had to cut it up to eat it , it was dry , I also noticed someone took a scone back I heard the girl say it must of got mixed up with the fresh ones , ours must have been last weeks ,It was 15 minutes before we got our drinks I noticed several tables hadn't got theres either , people were going to the counter to complain by this time . Just needs a bit more organising, who wants to eat a scone without a drink !!!..on the other hand we will go again to try the Gardeners lunch which looked delicious
