Elle Estelles Cafe in Scarborough

Terrible experience. Horrible atmosphere as soon as we walked in. The guy working there had an attitude problem, shouting at the young female waitress and telling the whole cafe that it was her second day. Had an argument with two other customers as they'd been waiting a while for two cups of tea. Even the customer said that he is stressed and he didn't like that and began arguing. Getting all the orders wrong and blaming the young waitress. Stated he is not taking anymore orders even though I'd been sat on the table and my mum ordered just before me. I had to tell him we were together. Such an uncomfortable atmosphere. How he works in hospitality/customer service is beyond me. Clearly the wrong industry. The poor staff, clearly not a very good trainer, but not his fault. AVOID as you'll only be left disappointed and leaving with a headache.

Lovely coffee and carrot cake thank you. Just what we needed wn route along Cleveland way. Sat outside and watched the passing tourists.

This is a pleasant little cafe halfway down the hill ,so a welcome resting place for a good coffee. Very quaint with a pleasant owner

I came here with my family during a birthday trip to Robin Hood’s Bay this June. During a previous trip, we had walked right past this place, and, noticing that it looked cute and cosy, I made a note to visit next time. So, in we went! We stopped off for some sandwiches and coffee. I see several reviews here saying that the owner is loud and rude, but I just think he’s a personality you’re not expecting to run into in a quaint little seaside cove. He actually reminds me of a bustling New Yorker running a busy city eatery, and I don’t think that’s necessarily something ‘bad’, just different. We overheard some funny conversations between the owner and the lad working there (who is very reserved in serving, so must be in a student job). Later, we spoke to the owner himself and he had a great sense of humour and was telling us all sorts of interesting details about the residents and economy of RH’sB, and where the inspiration came from for the name of the cafe. It was fascinating. Away from that, the sandwiches were lovely and great quality at that. I had the pesto chicken and it was obvious that it was proper roast chicken cold cuts (the best thing ever!) and the salad that came with it was lovely and fresh. The coffees were absolutely delicious too! Overall, it’s a quiet place that is occasionally empty, with a bustling till point (and tempting cakes), but worth checking out I’d say! I can only imagine what this place looks like if it’s decorated for Autumn and Christmas! :-)

Stopped off here for a coffee. My partner order the breakfast roll and wow he enjoyed it that much he had another (with me sharing). It was fabulous. Plenty of sausage, bacon, black pudding and an egg. The best I have ever had.

I can’t review anything we ate or drank as we didn’t even get the chance to order as the gentleman behind the counter rudely told my partner when he approached to get served “I am not taking anymore orders at the minute as I am catching up with the dishes” so we took our business elsewhere. Robin Hoods Bay is beautiful, even on a rainy March day but shame this man’s attitude didn’t match the scenery. Good luck with your business mate! We will be walking past your door when we next visit!

Excellent. The guy is very friendly and helpful. I had a toasted ciabatta which came with all the trimmings and was excellent. Coffee excellent. Would definitely recommend.

Soggy sandwiches , although one of our family had jacket potato which was ok. The man behind the counter not friendly at all and was quite rude . The other member of staff was friendly and was very busy.Would not visit again 🙄 😒

First visit to Robin Hoods Bay. After a stroll down the hill stopped at Elle Estelles for lunch. Limited menu but what was on offer was decent enough fayre for the price

The guy serving was working hard and coping well. The place is very small but if you get a table the coffee is superb and the cakes homemade and delicious.

When visiting Robin Hood Bay went here both mornings for breakfast. Food is freshly cooked, really tasty and very filling. Staff were busy but friendly and helpful. In my grandson's words, "scrumptious, delicious and amazing".

We came for breakfast, to be told they only had breakfast rolls. Fine - but the bacon had been pre-cooked and left under the grill to go cold and so had the sausage and eggs. This is definitely not in line with food & hygiene regulations. They werent cooked fresh, just served basically cold in rolls thick with butter. There was so much butter you could smell it! I did ask for no butter but got butter anyway. The bacon was really really fatty too. The toilet was dirty with no lock on the door. The lady serving was complaining at the top of her voice in earshot of the few customers that were in the place and wasnt very apologetic when we sent back the cold, fatty, buttery bacon roll. The only positive i can say about this cafe is that coffees were nice. I would avoid this place at all costs. Such a shame as its a cute little cafe that could be great.

We only came here for a sausage sandwich and coffees but this was absolutely delicious and all the other food looked great too! Clean inside and outside area,The service was fast and friendly! Would visit again if I ever get the chance :)

I saw this cafe online and wanted to see for myself, whether it was as "terrible" as people have stated. Yes, the chap who runs the joint was loud but it became clear to me within 30 seconds that he's quirky and probably doesn't have a lot of social awareness. This doesn't make someone rude. He chatted to me, took my photo. The coffee wasn't bad either. Pretty standard coffee house, I would say. Great photographic opportunities to be had.

Looks great from the outside but that’s about it. Very similar to what other one star reviews have said. Attitude from the owner, cleanliness, all a disgrace. Avoid at all costs.

Rude staff, took the order wrong and then proceed to shout at me infront of the entire cafe as it was my fault, and the way he spoke to the poor young lad that was working there.

Horrendous food. Bacon in the paninis was tough and burnt. The woman behind the counter, didn’t look happy that she had customers and her communication skills were dire. Lacking ingredients. Toaster had broken and no baked beans for the children. Wasn’t apologetic but narky about this. She was moaning in earshot of the customers for the whole time that we were there. The cafe next door was full of customers, whereas this cafe was almost empty and people were turned away? The toilets were an absolute disgrace. Inside door was broken and the outer couldn’t be locked. The toilet area was very dirty. Avoid this cafe as you will be very disappointed.

We love this little place - we went twice in a 4 day stay. The food is excellent value and really well presented as well as being delicious! Cakes next time!

Popped in here today for coffee as it looked cozy and welcoming. 1 table of 6 in, we were a two. So place almost empty. Ordered two cappuccinos. Waited, waited , waited. What became apparent was the guy behind the counter was talking incessantly the whole time we were there just nonsense, almost hyper. Still we waited. 4 hot chocolates came out then the guy realised he'd missed two off their order for the table of 6. Still we waited. Eventually the girl realised we were still waiting then admitted he had forgotten our order!! In the meantime the people on the table of 6 were still waiting for 2 of the cakes they ordered the same time as their drinks. Still the guy behind the counter was wittering on despite messing up the table of 6 and forgetting ours! Another two came in, got served in a reasonable time, then a table of 3 came in, placed their order....and waited so long they kept looking around to see where their drinks had got to. Our coffee was pleasant, once it arrived. Still the useless guy behind the counter was yapping on. I felt sorry for the girl working with him who was more efficient. I work in hospitality and know times can be stressful but this guy couldn't cope when the place was all but empty! I suggest he stopped wittering non stop and concentrated on his paying customers! He might want to get a shave and haircut too as long straggly hair and scruffy beard aren't a good look when serving food! Not our best experience!

It looked nice on the outside when we got inside its awful feeling staff not nice. We ordered 1 americano and 1 latte and sat outside we had one sip off it it made sickly we had to leave it and when I came to pay I had to wait until girl come back because the boy didn't know how much the coffee was she came back after 5 minutes talking on the phone. Everything was a effort for them they should not be allowed to be open give other people a chance who would do a better job

At the end of an 8 mile walk to Ravenscar, my partner and I were looking forward to a light bite and a sit down. I ordered a cheese, tomato and pesto panini, and my partner explained that I had a cashew nut allergy and asked whether the pesto they used contained cashews. They said clearly 'no, just pine nuts'.Well, after the first bite it was clear that this was false. I was offered a replacement sandwich but not even a whiff of an apology. One member of staff seemed to find the whole thing amusing, and they were even surprised when we said we weren't going to be paying for my order.I've been lucky. My allergy isn't too bad, so all I had to endure was a few hours of severe stomach cramps. If this had been someone else they might have ended up in hospital, or worse. Even after I explained this they treated it as if it were an interesting fact. Still no apology.I found the way I was treated disgusting and deeply disturbing. Please don't reward them with your patronage.

Rude staff, waited ages for our order which they had forgotten, stale scones, cluttered tables with dirty pots left on them so they were turning people away as there was nowhere for them to sit. Only part of our order finally arrived and charged us for full amount. Give it a miss, terrible.

Terrible service, we were over charged, they didn't bring our full order, and we were lied to, the woman on duty said the toilet was out of order, and yet later the man on duty said to her that he wanted to use it but had to wait till we had gone. We felt that we were a nuisance being there.

Visited today for a quick bite to eat and it's an exercise in how not do give great customer service. They don't acknowledge customers, their system for Covid is unclear, service is slow, staff are petulant and rude and more concerned with when they can stop serving. The man (owner?) seemed to be stressed and either he is already overwhelmed by the job or he just isn't cut out for the hospitality industry. Either way, he needs to sell up.

Very small cafe with a couple of pavement tables and four indoor tables, staff not particularly friendly and there appeared to be a bit of an atmosphere between the two males on duty. Covid guidelines were not being properly observed and the table cleaning a bit chaotic and the only toilet was "out of order" probably the best thing about our visit was the food and coffee but we will certainly not be revisiting.

We popped in for some hot drinks this morning and the atmosphere was pretty chaotic. The member of our party ordering at the till was asked the same questions repeatedly and it was so noisy you couldn’t really chat. Additionally, the two blokes behind the counter seemed to be arguing with each other which made it a bit uncomfortable. It also became very busy inside which was a wee bit of a worry given the covid situation - to order one had to basically lean over the person sat near the till. Additionally, we’re very happy to help the covid situation by wearing masks, however if one needs to do that, it needs to be made clear on the door, as, like us, most people didn’t think they needed to wear one when sitting in at a cafe. There was no sign or anything - you just got told as you came in which caused a little panic.

Absolutely awful. We visited here today (or tried to). The staff watched 5 of us get off our bikes (including a 16 month old) and take a seat outside. We were following all appropriate goevnerment guidelines re - COVID (all from one household). After around 10 minutes when no one came I went inside to order. By this time my 16 month old was particularly hungry. After I tried to order a drink (bearing in mind the period that had elapsed since we arrived and the staff said nothing) I was asked how many of there are you? When I replied 5 the male told me he would not serve me as they were limiting to groups of 4 (despite the latest guidance being groups of 6) I was more annoyed as the staff had watched us for a good while and not said anything. We chose this place as it was quiet on a beautiful day when everywhere else was packed.. now we know why! Customer service is awful, AVOID AT ALL COSTS

Ordered a sandwich and a panini to take away. Walked down to the beach, opened our food and discovered that the panini had a different filling to what we ordered. The ham sandwich was two thick, dry slices of bread with a measly bit of ham in. I have never been so underwhelmed with a sandwich! The cup of tea was OK though.

Visited this cafe on Monday, won’t be visiting again, both staff members stressed, not friendly, moody, had attitudes, waited for a table to be cleared eventually sat down with our dog and ordered tea, coffee , scone and a bacon sandwich, but told breakfast had finished. Then a local then came in and ordered a bacon sandwich, so we challenged him and his answer was she’s a local and apparently there was enough bacon left for a panini. Another customer cleared the table for him and got a telling off and a lecture about Covid. Needless to say the customer walked out. I asked to use the toilet and was told they were out of order., I’m not convinced they were. Avoid plenty of other nice cafes further up.

Had just completed a 3 hour coastal walk and were ready to eat and relax. On arrival only one other couple in the cafe. He asked to wait while cleaned our table and seemed very agitated. We sat down and I enquired if the prawns were still on the menu. Yes they were. I asked if ok to just have one prawn to make sure they are the meaty ones. He was not pleased! He walked passed us and started slamming the chairs against table and huffing and puffing and said he had to clean tables and completely ignored us. He proceeded to go behind counter and continue to bang about. I said to him I was going to leave as would not give my money and custom to someone being so rude. We left and he would not even look at us.

Arrived to a very cold welcome. They cleaned a table and we proceeded to sit down. Staff were very unpleasant and stressed despite being not busy. We asked a question about one of the options on the menu and the male staff member proceeded to just say he needed to clean tables, which would normally be fine, however he was in a very bad mood as he was slamming chairs in and creating a very unpleasant atmosphere. It was so stressful, so we ended up just leaving.

We visited Elle Estelles on our visit to Robin Hoods bay, the panini’s are delicious and packed full of flavour, the fresh side salad and coleslaw are a great flavour filled touch, the only improvement I can think of is more of a menu/price list, it would have been nice to see the whole selection of drinks and desserts available.

Went in for lunch with my partner, ordered paninis. The menu is alright but quite limited, there were a few vegetarian options for her though. Was then told they had no bacon for my choice - no problem (though it was not that late in the day in high tourist season and 3/7 menu choices included bacon!), subbed ham instead.When paninis came (which took c15 minutes despite it being empty when we sat down), my partner had ended up with a panini with chicken in it, a fact she only noticed after eating several mouthfuls (as a veggie of 15 years she did not recognise taste/texture). From a glance at the order sheet there was very impressionistic notes of what we ordered which got mangled. We also overheard the two staff talking whilst we ate, and it became clear that the staff training was nonexistent (the lass did not know Brie was a cheese...). The incorrect panini was discounted, and a faint apology was given but it really upset a vegetarian of 15 years to eat a dead bird!People waiting for takeaway food for nearly 25 minutes whilst we ate. Atmosphere inside was nice but rather basic. Limited selection on menu looks like it’s based on basic competence of cook rather than artisanal choice. Wish we’d read the reviews before we sat down!

Walked in today to witness an argument between the two male staff members. This didn’t help the attitude of the service. We sat outside, where in due course we were grumpily accused of moving a chair away from its correct table (it wasn’t us). Only saving grace was that my son found the food tasty, but despite that we certainly won’t be returning to this establishment, which has no perception of customer experience.

Very poor, really lowers the tone for the village and should be a local concern. Shocking entitled attitude from the owner, poor store bought food. Go next door for a far better experience.

Visited today for lunch with my husband and 2 children. There was a small issue with one of our meals which I politely mentioned. I was met with a shockingly rude, aggressive response from the owner who was not interested in the slightest in resolving the issue. When challenged in a calm manner by my husband he bragged that he was the owner so he could say what he liked and he's got plenty of customers (captive audience).No food is prepared fresh, all clearly bought from a budget supermarket. Don't be taken for a fool by this guy, go to one of the many other lovely cafes and tea rooms.

We called in here for a quick bite to eat after walking with our dog on the beach. I was shocked though at how miserable the staff were. We asked if our dog was welcome and as he wasn’t wet he was which was good for us. The cafe is very small and cramped and as the table had menus on we assumed someone would take our order as it was difficult to get to the counter. After waiting about 15 minutes with nobody coming to take our order we had to get the attention of the young waitress to check to see how we ordered. Unfortunately we had to order at the counter which meant me virtually leaning over another customer whilst they were eating.The toilet facility is shocking. Very untidy and in need of doing up. No cold water tap either as it was broken.Fortunately our food was pleasant enough but I wouldn’t go back because I have never known a place to have such miserable staff.

Stopped for a coffee and a slice of cake. Food / drink was reasonable - not the best in the world but not the most expensive either. We were the only one's in there (went in late on after most tourists had left) and it felt a bit too quiet, you could have heard a pin drop - a little background music wouldn't have gone amiss as it was quiet.

All bought in food from Aldi served in a cafe! Including the potato toppings be careful its not the best, low price cost food! The woment at the counter said it was all bought in this morning and that they didn't make it!!

We didn't actually go into the cafe but were walking past when they were closing up. I was stood looking down into the lovely little stream opposite when someone came up beside me and dumped a bucket of dirty, bleach water into the stream. Lovely.

We ordered two crab sandwiches and two teas , to a very uninterested young girl , who if smiled,I think her face would have cracked. After waiting 20 minutes, we got up and walked out , and advised another couple not to bother. There was only 1 family, admittedly of 6, in the place . There were dirty plates still on tables and not a word from the staff as to why thing were taking so long. Uninterested staff and very poor service. Take your money to Tea, toast and post , in the harbour , lovely atmosphere and smiling polite staff

We stopped in hope of a good breakfast, unfortunately the staff were unprofessional and didn't seem to know what they were doing, there was scrambled eggs on the menu with various dishes but apparently they only had fried eggs.. go to tea, toast and post just up the road instead!

While walking out of Robin Hoods Bay we came across Elle Estelle's and nipped in for a coffee and cake. It's a lovely, small cafe and we thoroughly enjoyed our visit. We would recommend a visit if you're in the area.

We'd planned to visit another cafe in the village, but soon learnt that the businesses in the bay open they want! Being in desperate need of a good breakfast we headed to Elle Estelles and were greeted by happy customers, eating lovely looking food, a warm welcome by the staff and flexibility on the menu too - perfect. Fantastic English breakfast and scrambled eggs. I see what the other reviewers mean re: the size of the tea servings. We're not big tea drinkers, so a pot of 1-2 served with tiny espresso cups was great for us, but I can see disappointment if you need a few cups to get you going with a breakfast, or satiate you after a long walk. There is the option of a larger pot and you can ask for more hot water. We would make this our number one choice for our next visit.

We had a great day in Robin Hoods Bay and called in this little gem for a bite to eat and a tea. The staff was very pleasant and the food was fresh and amazing. Great pot of tea to go with it.

We visited today with our 6 children while on holiday. A couple of things were sold out but didn’t bother us we chose something else and it was all lovely. The girl who served us was lovely 😊

We were struggling to find a dog friendly cafe as places were closing early due to the Tour De Yorkshire, but we were very happy with our find. Coffee and cakes , particularly the Victoria sponge , were excellent and service quick and friendly. Would definitely go back.

We last visited in September 2017 and it isn't any better.

We popped into this busy cafe for lunch and immediately found a table to two quite easily. We were greeted by the young lady behind the counter with a smile, whilst an older gent was busy in the background preparing food.

We spent quite a long time here after the excellent cliff-top walk from Whitby. I suppose the coffees were a bit pricey (order the large) but good quality so can not complain. Scones very good with proper(!) clotted cream, hot chocolate very popular, staff attentive and friendly. So, our group of 11, ages from 6 to 77, very satisfied with our visit. And about the toilet, it does not take a rocket scientist to lock the folding door..., but agree the communal hand towel was a bit off putting.

Owners obviously not reading the reviews or doesn’t care.

Friendly staff, nice atmosphere, nice drinks and good cakes. Dogs welcome, which when you have a great dane with you, is a blessing

They had a lovely menu for breakfast but we couldn't enjoy any of it! Just bacon and sausage baps on offer. Otherwise a nice cafe.

Surprised at reading the previous reviews, perhaps the management/staff have now changed, as we had a pleasant experience in this cafe.

Poor all round.Ordered tea for two.Got small pot with 1teabag and 2 espresso cups.Could find no cheese in my mozzarello and tomato panino and was burnt and hard.Blaring pop music.Unfriendly staff.Sub standard toilet.

There are a few little cafes along the narrow, steep street through Robin Hoods Bay so you have some choice...

Tried to order sandwiches to take away...the man behind the counter made me feel awful for asking as he was so stressed (not particularly busy I might add, one table and a lady waiting for 2 coffees and a sandwich) abdcrgen he started arguing with the lady behind the counter - bickering about who was doing what. They couldn’t get the machine to work to take cards and this caused more bickering between them and again made me feel more and more uncomfortable. They didn’t start making my order and I waited (without any apology) listening to the staff arguing for around 12 minutes before I left without anything! No customer care at all, a dreadful atmosphere, awful attitude and a waste of time...I can’t believe they are still trading!

Just the worst service ever. 2 young clueless girls not coping on a Saturday afternoon. Where was the owner? We were told it would be a wait for a sandwich of 20 mins but after 10 mins it looked like we would have to wait a lot longer. Just no idea

Stopped here on the way back up the hill for a takeaway lunch - they do have a board outside advertising this. We were told that we could only have panini to takeaway as nothing else on the takeaway menu was available. Ordered panini for the five in our party and waited on the table outside (it’s too small a place to wait inside) only to be told to move away so that customers can use the tables. Maybe we didn’t count as customers! We were told the food would be about 10 minutes but it was easily double this and whilst we were waiting by the wall not one person sat at the tables we were asked to vacate.

We realised our mistake as soon as we ordered coffee and sat down, the staff were loud and overbearing playing music for there own entertainment, discussing their private lives the table was so dirty that my newspaper stuck to the table a black hair was ingrained in the dirty table my husband left after one sip of his coffee I left soon after

Thankfully we only had coffee, after a couple of sips I gave up due to it tasting stale, it may have been freshly made coffee but from which day? Due to the radio being on full blast the two members of staff had to almost scream to each other to discuss their personal life. There are lots of alternatives in Robin Hood's Bay, give this place a wide berth.

When my daughter and called into the cafe for refreshments we asked for two coffees. Looking at my debit card, the man behind the counter said 'not with that'. Apparently they have a £5 minimum spend for card payments. All he had to do was explain that and would we like to purchase a cake for example. Having said that most shops seemed to apply the same minimum spend, which is unfortunate in such a small town without any obvious ATM's.
