Great pub. Great food. Great service. We arrived on a Friday steak night and luckily we had booked as the pub was packed. Really great steaks and nice attentive service. Good wine list and accepted a recommendation for a nice red.

Very very disappointing, and for the record the “irrefutable” facts are 1) My hosts complaint was met with total disdain because we didn’t complain immediately (being asked within minutes of the food being delivered if everything is ok is not a satisfactory defence) 2) We had to complain twice to even get an unsatisfactory response from the kitchen 3) 80% of the star of the dish was returned and it could be clearly seen that it had not been cooked properly 4) The Landlord was too busy carrying renovations to even bother to make an attempt to support his staff or chef. 5) Staff, knowing we were disappointed didn’t even off to remove the optional service charge from the bill, until challenged. Yes, I ate all mine but that is more a testament to my upbringing on how to behave as a guest as opposed to the quality of the food. If a pub only offers only traditional pub food than the only reasons to return is if the service or ambience is good, which on this occasion they at failed miserably.

Had the Special of the day , BELLY PORK . Please avoid , fat wasn’t rendered and after 2 mouthfuls I couldn’t eat any more as lumps of gristle in every mouthful. I showed the waitress that I hadn’t eaten it and asked her to tell the so called chef . I asked for feedback from the chef and he said he was sorry ,but they didn’t offer an alternative or take it off the bill. Very disappointed

Down here for a holiday . Was shock at the price ! for an average mixed meats roast dinner .Nothing else extra . We did reserve before as we went & had a nice meal the Tuesday before which was about £64 with puddings ! . Was told £19 I think each for a roast on Tuesday evening 🤔 Two roast dinners not massive not on an extra large plate or anything and two soft pint glass drinks ( pint Diet Coke & a pint lime with soda ) all came to £61.71 . Didn’t want to cause a stir as it was busy and as a disabled person I was not feeling well and just wanted to get back to the rental place . I knew there was a 10% service charge which I have well taken into account and even if the meals were £25 each it don’t make sense ! Please don’t get ripped off like I have been .

Always a wonderful welcome but last Saturday, they outdid themselves, with a wonderfully decorated table for my partners birthday and friend’s anniversary. A lot of effort put in . Also as always the food was great , 12 odd of us ate and I had food envy on the Caprese Mushroom. The steak is always good , on a Friday cooked over an open fire and we weren’t disappointed by its melt in the mouth texture on Saturday. Also very good are their pies , a ‘proper’ pie with a top and bottom . Do pop into this pretty pub and meet the lovely Mandy & James and their brilliant staff :) ( staff make such a difference in any establishment).

We were staying nearby and it came recommended so we ate here one evening. One young guy behind the bar who seemed to be a bit overwhelmed but was doing a sterling job, When it came, our food was very tasty and good vfm. One criticism though was that the loos stank; hope the kitchen was cleaner!

What a spectacular Sunday lunch. Stopped here in a whim, and made so welcome! Lovely building with so much history. We enjoyed the Sunday roast. The beef was cooked to perfection and veggies were delicious. Yorkshire pudding cooked to perfection, and we shared a yummy cauliflower cheese. Service was perfect, and loos were spotless. Place is obviously some sort of doggie haven as many were turning up with their pups, and the owners seemed to know each by name. Thankfully, all went through to the back/garden (I have allergies so avoid). Highly recommend

The best Steak I have ever eaten. That is a bold statement, but seriously, the rump steak I ate on Friday was so good I would have happily paid twice the price. The house red wine was a delight. The staff are attentive and deliver great service. This is without doubt the best place to eat for miles around.

This pub had a really unusual menu and I was looking forward to my lunch. I ordered Welsh rarebit and a salad. When it came it already had a very generous portion of salad, so I must admit I felt a touch taken advantage of. I really wish the bar person had told me I wouldn’t need to order another salad separately! The eggs were a touch overdone and the rarebit sauce rather bland. Look, it was perfectly adequate and I was the first through the door, so maybe the kitchen and bar staff weren’t into gear yet. But I left feeling rather disappointed.

Amazing service, so very friendly and efficient. Food was tasty, large portions. We were a large party and had pre ordered. The team managed this really well and knew who had ordered what. Payment was easy- we just gave our name and paid for what we had ordered food wise. Easy peasy and no complications with using a calculator to work out who had what!

Decided to pop in as we drove past at lunchtime, lovely pub with stools at the bar , and tables for eating. Ordered a fish pie and fish and chips, both came out of the kitchen steaming hot which was lovely and both were delicious, shout out for the fish pie which was really delicious. Only criticism is on a really wet, chilly day it was quite cold in the pub and would have benefitted from one of the log burners or fires lit, i know the weather is unusual for May but still would have been a nice touch.

Friendly, cosy pub. But the food isn’t up to much. Visited for a Sunday lunch. I’m not a huge fan of roasts and opted for the fish and chips. It looked nice on the plate, with lovey crispy batter. But the cod was dry, tasteless and crumbled rather than flaked. The rest of the party’s roast were “OK - nothing special.”

I have been going to the Ele for over 25 years. I have seen all manor of landlords and managers and thought that the latest were doing a good job....until we had lunch there the other week. My daughter ordered the potato Gnocchi and when it came, most of it was not cooked and hard lumps. Some of it was cooked so she ate what she could but left around 3/4 of the dish. When I mentioned this as i paid and quietly asked if they would remove the dish from my bill, the landlord came out the kitchen and said "No - she's eaten most of it". That was obviously not the case and his tone and look was so rude and aggressive. I simply said we would not be returning to the pub. Considering i spend around £200 - 300 a month there, he obviously doesn't care about losing local custom.

We booked after looking at the reviews and had driven past a few times and it looked lovely. When we arrived the initial pub itself is lovely, and looks cosy. When we walked in we let the bar staff know we had a table booked for dinner and the bar man said ‘sit anywhere’ - we looked around and none of the tables were set for dinner or even reserved, it felt very informal. We awkwardly chose an empty table (with regular drinkers standing around everywhere) and sat down. We weren’t offered any menus, nor were we told if it was table service or self service. (Either is fine, we just didn’t know!) Eventually we went up to the bar and ordered drinks. Still no offer of menus… I walked over to the end of the bar and picked up some menus. We had a look and went up to order. As nice as the bartender was, he didn’t know much about the menu/specials etc and had to keep asking the kitchen. Eventually the order went through to the kitchen. Food didn’t take long, and when it arrived it wasn’t amazing, but wasn’t bad either - it was all very meh. The whole experience was fine if you were coming for a casual lunch, but I wouldn’t recommend it for a nice dinner with friends. Maybe I came on a bad day as it has the potential to be really great…

Went for Sunday lunch with my wife and her very elderly Aunty. Lovely quaint old country pub (so obviously, disabled access not great, but staff quick to help). Given a nice table in the conservatory, which was fine until a large family with two babies took the table next door, then we couldn't make Aunty hear anything we shouted at her....the landlady was very understanding and (even though they were very busy) found us a quieter table inside. Sunday roasts were very nice, I had the mixed roast dinner, roast beef was best, next chicken, next pork, last lamb (a bit chewy). Roast potatoes and veg excellent. Portions of mint sauce were pretty meagre, no cranberry sauce for the chicken, you have to pay extra for more gravy. Pudding were good, massive piece of sticky toffee pudding. Service very good, didn't get rushed to finish. Would come again.

We used to visit here regularly before covid.Came for lunch today and was very disappointed with the food and prices. The liver and bacon was poor the liver was like paste and for someone who loves liver and bacon he was very disappointed with it and the worse he’s ever had.The burger was plain and nothing interesting and not worth the pay.The chips were extremely well over done and was as if no potato was left in and saturated in salt without being asked. The charged £2.40 for soda water which is ridiculous! So for the price of £78 for 4 lunches and a drink each was extremely expensive especially for what we had. And for £4 for a watered down lemonade was excessive, so overall was very disappointed.Even mentioned to the waitress at the end our thoughts and no compensation at all, just that we should have said and continued to charge us full amount.Shall not being returning.

Having moved to the area recently, we have been keen to try some different pubs for food. I had seen posts on the Matfield about the Elephant’s head, particular about their steaks, and I was not yo be disappointed. My wife had the King Prawn linguine which was a generous portion, full of large prawns. A small criticism would be that it was possibly slightly under seasoned, but better to be under-seasoned rather than over-seasoned, and easily rectified with the salt & pepper on the table. My steak was excellent - perfectly cooked and was nicely flavoured with garlic butter. So tender that you didn’t need a steak knife, an ordinary knife was more than sufficient. They do a steak night on Wednesdays, so we will definitely return to try that.Service was very friendly and helpful - good advice on the wines too!

Absolutely love this pub. My friends and I popped in for Sunday lunch as we did last weekend also.. The setting is pure bliss, with a wonderful garden and both child and dog friendly. The staff are smashing, utterly charming and always willing to go the extra mile to help if one has a food allergy. I have to mention the steaks...., simply to die for. Steak night on a weds night, the steaks are cooked in the bar over the fire. But I recommend one reserves a table well in advance so to avoid disappointment its that good. The only downside for us is its a bit of a drive from our home, wish it were our local!!! However we have recently learnt that the landlord offers a taxi service to get customers home safely. How amazing is that??!!! This pub is really quite something and my friends and I cannot fault it in anyway. Simply Wonderful.

Lovely attractive pub and friendly staff. The review is a poor rating however as there was an approximate 1 hour wait for each course to arrive (correctly) and the vegetarian options were extremely limited. The most disappointing aspect was the inaccurate info given regarding my coeliac sons food. I phoned ahead to ensure there where gluten free options to be told the chips where GF but on the day was told this was not the case. On advice on what gluten free options there where we ordered him a burger without the bun. An hour later when the burger arrived (and only when my son insisted we double checked) we were told the burger contained durum wheat which is not suitable for coeliacs. The staff where very apologetic, however I feel it is very important to get this right. My nieces vegetarian options were also extremely limited. The meal was replaced with a suitable meal and we were given two bottles of wine (we were a group of 11) and we weren’t charged my sons meal. This was appreciated but I feel that coeliacs searching for info on this pub need to be aware of our experience, given the short and long term consequences exposure to gluten has. My hope is that the staff improve the experience for coeliacs in the future.

First time visiting since moving to Wadhurst. It’s a 2 mile walk from our house and has now become our local for the following reasons.- Service is fantastic (The Landlord can drive you home! Which was needed after all the food :) )- They serve what I describe as the best steak for miles. I’ve eaten steak in multiple countries and the scottish 350g fillet was to die for. Covered in Garlic Gloves and served with the right amount of chips. They don’t even own steak knives it’s that good. - Good selection of drinks, big garden and not crammed with people looking to get pissed. A proper foodie pub! Still blown away by the pick up and drop home service, was a perfect touch and helpful due to the location. Will be back soon to try chicken kebab, burger and the ribs as that’s what my partner had! My girlfriend and I visited here after she had been with her family and said it was the most fantastic steak. Well she was not wrong! I've had many a steak around the world.....some good, some terrible. This is up there at the top of them all by virtue of getting both essential elements spot on - wonderfully sourced meat (120 aged by their own butchers) and then cooked on an open fire by a man who certainly knows what he's doing! We shall be regulars! (PS: pudding were lovely too, but we were just a bit too stuffed to fir it all in)

Really enjoyed our delicious steaks in the garden. Very friendly and helpful staff. Just what you hope a meal in a lovely country pub will be.

We turned up not knowing thew area as we were passing through and we were all pleasantly surprised. We sat outside in the garden and all enjoyed our food. The calamari was amazing and the kids all enjoyed their meals - there was nothing left.

This was our first visit to the pub, with friends, for Sunday lunch and I was so happy I chose it! We had a friendly welcome from the young staff and not too long to wait after placing our orders. The vegetarian Sunday lunch option was delicious.

Very disappointing Sunday lunch visit. Tried to prebook on the day but before we could say ‘can you hold a table for us?’ the member of staff had hung up on us. We arrived 10 mins later and waited at the bar to enquire about tables. The waitress apologised and said she had to make some coffees so couldn’t serve us for a while. Our table for 2 was not a good one. Wedged in a corner right up against a larger group so it was very noisy for us. We were then told there was no lamb or beef left - so no roast lunches. Wish we’d been told when we called to book. Ordered the mezze sharing board which was lovely. Really delicious. We had a battered haddock & chips and a burger. Really not much else to choose from on the menu. The batter on the haddock was absolutely saturated with oil. I had to take it all off. It was inedible. The burger was so greasy as was the bacon that came with it. The onion rings were battered but too oily to eat. My other half had to leave most of it which never happens!£54 for a disappointing lunch for 2. Too much. We did give feedback about the grease and oil ruining the meals but the waitress didn’t say much. We didn’t expect any money off and could have said more - but we did think they’d take more interest. Won’t be eating here again. Not a nice experience.

Lovely food. Great atmosphere - open fire and very cosy. Quiet Tuesday night but really enjoyed it. Men had steaks, I had the calves liver - replaced the broccoli with home made onion rings. Couldn’t fault it. I was torn between the liver and monkfish so need to go back. Steak on a Wednesday cooked over the open fire - need to book that too! Lots of gins and local ingredients. Well worth it. House red was good too. Plenty of parking.

Visited recently for a family birthday- my nephew was looking forward to his steak all week! It did not disappoint. We were a rowdy table of ten and the service was patient, knowledgable & attentive. We sampled a number of dishes including (of course) the steak (in various forms but all were executed perfectly), burger, risotto and fish & chips- the quality of the food was far and away the best pub food I’ve had in a very long time. We’ll be back- already planning the next birthday!

Ubfortunately for me I chose the venue because it is near to me. We all chose the steak and ale pie from the specials board. The pie was in fact fact a bowl of watery gravy in which were a few pieces of tough beef and uncooked onion covered over with a wafer thin piece of pastry. We all stated that we were very dissapointed with it and in hindsight we should have complained much more bit did not want to upset the staff. Needlessto say we won't be returning or recommending this venue.

My wife and I visited for lunch for my birthday last weekend. We wanted to try the steaks and were certainly not disappointed! Two delicious steaks arrived very quickly, still sizzling and accompanied by large portions of fries and rocket salad. Definitely the 'go-to' place if you're after steaks!Service was very friendly (although on arrival we found that they had no trace of the phone booking I had made, but in the event this wasn't a problem as there were plenty of tables free). The pub itself still has a traditional country pub feel about it. We'll be back!

Just had lunch here, roast was cold, I tried deep fried fish and chips ...the worst I have ever had, batter was undercooked and greasy, my husbands roast beef was disgusting, cold and the roast potatoes were clearly pre cooked. I shall not be returning.

We started visiting the Elephants Head about a year ago and this pub has become a regular haunt of ours for a ‘date night’ ever since. The menu has just changed and this week I had the Venison Wellington and my wife had the Monk fish. Both meals were excellent and couldn’t be faulted, the venison was so tender, the best I’ve ever had.Sadly, no room left for pudding!

Suggested by a friend for a dinner out on their “Steak Night” (Wednesday) so we booked, and on walking in saw that the interior had been brought very much back to life since my last visit, lovely wood features and spacious tables/dinning areas, however sadly the decorating stopped at the toilets as they looked very much as I remember. We sat down and ordered some drinks, then ordered from the menu, as there were a number of people sharing a large cut of beef, we had to wait for the chef (who we’re told is busy with a party table) to come and explain the cut to the table, not necessary I felt, and orders then taken! After a significant wait my medium cooked fillet arrived, having asked for very rare! The steak was ok, despite being overcooked for my liking and request, the sauce was beautiful, and the chips were very good indeed, however as all the other people in my party were sharing their steak and chips, it was decided by the waitress that I was sharing too! And I was told to take chips from a communal bowl put on the table! So when someone orders a meal that comes with its own sides, does that only mean if your friends aren’t with you?!?After main course we had dessert, and after 20minutes the chef comes out to say he doesn’t know the dessert order for my choice of ice cream, so I cancel the order as I am no longer wanting dessert, I was dismissed and then brought a dessert, that I didn’t want, had told them four times I didn’t want, and then met with shock when I didn’t eat it! Yet they still charged for it!!If you are going to want repeat business you need to listen to your customers, and if you bill yourselves as a steak Resturant, even if only for one night a week, then listen to how your customers want the food cooked, or just don’t ask them.Shall not be returning, had such promise.

Wow what can I say about this place but amazing. The staff are very accommodating seeing we have twin babies they didnt mind putting us on a big table and taking up the space, they were friendly also. We had the steak special on the night and it was the best steak I had tasted, cooked on the open fire in the pub. We have also been for Sunday lunch and rung ahead to pre order what meat we would like as the staff had said to let them know as soon as we knew so we didn't miss out as we were eating later than usual. Again the portion was huge and the roast was just amazing meat melting in our mouth... This pub is a gem hidden away and a must visit for anyone in the area looking for great food and a lovely atmosphere. We will be back and will be making it our local for food.

I don't live in the area and wanted to take my daughter out for a birthday lunch, she was on a 3 weeks stint for work nearby. As I was travelling from Ramsgate and have a very small polite dog, which I didn't want to leave at home for the whole day needed a restaurant which would allow her in. As it was a Sunday I decided I should book a table, after trying (telephone call 2 days before) 2 restaurants in nearby Pembury, one couldn't fit us in, 2nd didn't allow dogs, I found the The Elephant Head. We were a party of 4 plus the dog, there were other dogs there as well, all well behaved, we had a delightful lunch, I was pleased I had booked as the place was full, always a good sign. I had the roast beef which was pink, as I like it, all the vegtables were perfectly cooked. I didn't have a pudding as I was full, staff were very pleasant, we weren't rushed, and if I was in the area again I would definitely go back.
