El Toro in Portsmouth

Our first visit but not our last exceptional food my husband had the mixed grill which he said was the best he had ever had the steak was cooked to his liking. I had the surf and turf which again cooked to perfection and delicious. The staff where happy and friendly definitely worth a visit.

We were taken to this fantastic restaurant by family on Thursday evening. Wow it was amazing, food cooked to perfection. I had sword fish which was delicious, the rest of our family had steak , Fillet , Rib eye and Sirloin, my sister in law said it was the best fillet she had ever tasted!! So when we next visit from Leicester El Toro will be top on the list to go 😊

Fantastic food, great portion sizes, delivered with speed, great service all good value for money. every one of our group stated they had a great meal. We will all be returning.

Staff so welcoming, and very attentive and polite. Delicious squid stater, beautiful steak main cooked perfectly, and nice lemon tart to finish. Located in trendy part of Southsea. Will definitely return.

It's our second time going to this restaurant, and the second time we've not been disappointed. The food was excellent and cooked as ordered, and the service was great.

We had to book early as it was so busy in Saturday night but we didn’t mind too much as it had an atmosphere but wasn’t overly packed. For me personally the Sauvignon blanc, which was the most expensive white by the glass, wasn’t the best I have had but not bad at all in saying that! I had chicken paella which was fantastic and I would say you got plenty for your money! Only downside I would say chicken wasn’t the best quality with lots of fatty bits which again for me puts me off the rest of the meat. Although the overall taste was delicious! Would have a halloumi next time. The other half had a mixed grill and thoroughly enjoyed it. Usually steak is his favourite although he loved chicken and lamb. Steak didn’t carry much flavour and ribs were just ok. But again overall thoroughly enjoyed it. Service was fantastic and the staff were friendly and helpful and quick without making you feel rushed. Overall we would come back here and try something else too! **please bear in mind ‘criticisms’ are of our own taste and preferences! Overall experience here was fantastic**

I have never been disappointed with my steak here - always well cooked, presented and importantly delicious! Very thoughtful service and I can recommend the red wines which compliment the meal.

I really don't know how this restaurant has this 4.7 stars. 4 of us went there. For starters we had crab cakes (looked like flat falafel)I couldn't taste any crab, tasted like cheap tuna and potato cakes. garlic prawns over cooked and sauce was floury and couldn't taste any garlic either. Mains; 2 of us had steaks both completely UNSEASONED, if you are paying over £20 for a steak I expect it to at least have SALT in it. Only positive is that at least they cooked it medium rare as we asked. Spicy ribs... they are dry pork ribs again, cooked with no seasoning at all and only chuck in a bit of what they called "chimichurri" and a few chilli flakes. Finally the £22 "chimichurri" sea bass wasn't fresh it tasted like it was on the edge of going bad. Their chimichurri is NOT chimichurri but I guess at least it had some salt. The sides... chips were okay, mushrooms had no seasoning, corn on the cob you could tell it was cooked from frozen and new potatoes were the only thing I enjoyed....After adding salt. Overall super overpriced, food is not worth it. Service was good, staff was very nice hence why 1 star.

1st visit to El toro's Really nice welcome , polite waiters , very friendly. Good choice of food . Really enjoyed the speciality steak, cooked perfectly and melt in the mouth . Freshly cooked and hot chips . Nice ambiance for a dinner for two. Finished with some lovely liqueur coffees . Knocked down a star for clearing up and cleaning cutlery noisley when still dining , difficult to talk but apart from that we will definitely be going again for the 4 steak tasting platter 😋😁

Super food, excellent service for our group of 20 celebrating two important birthdays, will definitely recommend and we’ll be back

Have been here many times now and have never been disappointed. Any time I've tried a different local steakhouse it just doesn't compare, so I return to this one. The service is impeccable and steaks are cooked exactly how I ask them to be every time, with a great flavour. It has a nice warm atmosphere despite being a fairly large venue. My favourite restaurant in Southsea.

We were only in Southsea for one night and hadn’t booked anywhere up front. Decided on El Toro after a couple of drinks around the corner at the Lord Palmerston. The food and service were absolutely spot on, my wife had the fish and chips which were really nice, I decided on the spicy ribs which were lovely and succulent with the meat just falling off the bone. We will definitely be back

Booked a table for New Year’s Eve. What.a great steak house. The best steak and mixed grill we have ever had. Staff are very friendly and cannot do enough for you. I would definitely recommend booking a table here.

Very nice restaurant and a good variety of choices. We have the nachos, the chicken burger and the sirloin. Everything was very good and at a decent price. Perfect diner before the marathon

Not as anticipated. The steak was tasteless, considering it had been marinated in the signature marinade. It truly needs a side sauce. The chips were frozen and of poor quality. Whereas, the side salad was tasty Would I return? No.

What can I say except how have we missed this fabulous restaurant. Went in on Christmas eve, the service was fantastic, the food out of this world. Actually can't fault this restaurant and all I can say is, if you haven't visited, then you must do so as you are missing A treat.

Everything excellent..... again 2 couples last night ... prawns and squid perfectly cooked and served Waiter delightful and very helpful , steak cooked to perfection and ribs delicious ... sea bass was excellent... chips were hot and crispy and can't wait to come back again Congratulations to chef's and staff alike .. quite possibly the best restaurant in Portsmouth .... definately the best steak restaurant by a country mile ... keep it up

It was my birthday! My wife treated me to a meal, and of course it had to be at El Toro. Had a wonderful Ribeye steak - ordered a larger portion. The whole meal - starters, mains and Cointreau Coffee Liqueur was excellent.

Generous portions for starters, steak and fajita mains were fantastic, this restaurant is excellent value for money and the best steak I've ever had. Service was impeccable too, BUT..guys the atmosphere! Blasting sclub7, Craig David, b*witched, steps and Daniel Beddingfield out of the speakers for the whole meal was terrible, what were you thinking?!

I rarely leave reviews for anything except when something is exceptional. Last night we are in El Toro for my sons's birthday and overall it was incredible meal out. Our party consisted of 4 adults an 8 year old and 12 year old. From the minute we came through the door the staff were fabulous and couldn't do enough for us. Service was efficient, our glasses were topped up, cutlery changed, table wiped after our main and we were asked a few times if we needed anything. We ordered surf and turf, chicken and steak, mixed grill and steak and lamb and a burger for my daughter. It was all cooked to perfection and tasted AMAZING. The meat was amazing quality, served hot and came with extra sauces that we ordered, peppercorn, garlic and blue cheese. All served with piping hot chips. Every plate was cleared except the lamp bones!!!! We ordered two desserts and my son's came with a birthday candle, lovely touch. On receipt of payment we all got after eights with our receipt. Over all a 10/10. One of the BEST meals I have had in ages. Highly recommended!

We booked El Toro as part of our Xmas shopping weekend in Portsmouth. What a great decision, it was excellent from the moment we walked in, we were made very welcome and shown to our table, the atmosphere was really relaxed and the decor ..very Latin American. We ordered starters 2 Duck Tapas, crab cake & Fried Squid all arrived reasonably quickly.. Mains 1 Steak & Chicken, 1 Steak & Lamb, 1 Spinach & Mushroom and 1 Lamb Chops .. few sides asparagus, mushrooms and a hot Piri-Piri sauce all was absolutely delicious... Another thing absolute game optional extra fried eggs on top ..what a stroke of brilliance... It was a fantastic dinning experience. Needless to say we definitely be going back. El Toro thank you for an excellent evening.

Booked El Toro with no real personal recommendations...... Omg what a fantastic experience, the place is based on Latin American culture, the servers were spot on, and the food was exceptional. We had a fair range of dishes (there was 4 of us) I had the chicken & steak with a hot Piri-Piri dip..and game changer fried egg in the top, my wife had pork chops again delicious ...all the food was really good, thoroughly great experience10/10 👍👍

Probably one of the best meals out I've ever had! From the beginning, the staff were friendly and welcoming, polite, never overbearing and served with a smile. The food was outstanding! The garlic chicken and duck tapas starters were delicious and the steak and chicken mains were unbelievable. Cooked to what you requested and tasted amazing. I wouldn't hesitate to come back here again, lovely atmosphere and perfect food.

This was our first time eating at El Toro and it was with the sole intent of having a really great steak. Particularly having eaten great steak in Argentina. They did not disappoint, the food was excellent. The staff were friendly and efficient. We will definitely be eating here again and highly recommend El Toro.

Great food, I had the 10oz Ribeye and my Wife had the 8oz Fillet. Cooked perfectly and really enjoyed it. The staff were also great and friendly. Will definitely go back.

Went there on 15/9/23 both order 8once sirloin steak with chips and sauce. Wifes came out very nice . Mine came out no bigger then a small burger and must had two once’s of fat on it all so came out bowl of chips witch contain 12 chips for cost of £20 .we were seated in front of bar on round table .we felt we was sat in McDonald’s .I ask couples sat next to use and they felt McDonald’s would been better won’t be going there again

Came for my birthday meal as we wanted to try a restaurant we had not been to before. Oh my god. Service was incredible, very attentive, food was amazing, the best steak my husband and I have ever had. It's a little on the pricey side when you look at the menu, but once the meal comes out, you understand why. The portions are fair. The quality of the meal is amazing. I had such a lovely meal, that we have only just left the restaurant and I felt the need to immediately write a review, and let my friends know this was hands down, the best meal I've had. Will absolutely be returning.

Last minute decision to come here for our Grandsons 18th. Great choice, such friendly staff, beautiful food and great atmosphere. Also good choice for vegetarians. Definitely coming back!

When we want a guaranteed good food night out El Toro is where we go. Great food, lovely staff and an overall good atmosphere. Been to loads of other steak houses over the years but this one beats them all. Chicken, and fish dishes are fab too. Manager gets a special mention for always being so welcoming and attentive. Visited yesterday for my birthday. Food was delicious, plenty of it and reasonably priced. The staff were friendly and polite. Never been here before but will definitely be returning.

A brilliant meal, one of the best steak houses I've been in, all three of us enjoyed our meals, two steak, one fish. And the dessert, sticky toffee pudding and ice cream, was large and very tasty. Would recommend booking if in Portsmouth. And would definitely return.

Me and my partner had a lovely meal, opted for the mixed grill and it did not disappoint. All the meat was succulent and delicious. Will be returning. £55.00 for two meals and two drinks. Can’t go wrong

You walk into this place and just the atmosphere is gorgeous. Incredible vibe. Attentitave waiters. No matter if it's their table or not, if they see empty plates, they come over to remove them. Vast food selection and so tasty. I had paella for the first time ever and I love it! Meat is also tasty. Prices are reasonable. Found another favorite place! Wish they would do take out/delivery though. I am often alone and don't like sitting in restaurants by myself lol.

Only place to go for a steak. Honestly they melt in the mouth and are just the best place in southsea. Kid friendly, staff are fantastic they really are 10/10 friendly, approachable and so polite. Did I mention the steaks are incredible? If you get the chance go to el Toro you won't be disappointed (and if you don't have a reservation they do there upmost to squeeze you in!)

Took my grandson for his last meal before returning to his home in Colombia. The food was amazing; the flavours merged together were delicious. The service from the staff was just perfect. We had Nachos and garlic mushrooms to start. The portions were a good size; followed by steak and ribs and surf and turf with chips. Wonderful. Will return when he visits again next year. Cannot fault this restaurant. Food was delicious, all steaks cooked the way each individual asked for (table of 12 with 6 steaks). The staff are fantastic, so polite and attentive. This was our first visit and we will defiantly be returning.

Lovely food and very clean restaurant/kitchen.

The Steaks here are cooked extremely well and all the food was very delicious. The service was very good. The only thing I would quibble about is that the menu could have a little bit more variety.

Insanely good food, the ribs were fall-off-the-bone, melt in your mouth levels of perfection and the steak cut chips were delightfully fluffy with a nice crispy outer layer. Friendly and professional staff with reasonable prices too!

It was a good meal and the meat was beautifully cooked we had a mixed grill meal and a steak with lamb chop meal and the meat just seemed to be missing a little chargrilled flavour which is unusual for this place. Chicken was a bit dry but the chips and peppercorn sauce were great. The staff were super friendly and great with my 18 month old. A decent turn around for us of about an hour, granted our starter was nachos and didn't need long to prepare.

The person who works in the bar at the front is simply "not a kind person". If he is the business owner then I can clearly see that his attitude of treating customers is why the restaurant is empty during one of the busiest days in the year. If he is the manager then the owners should take a note of that. Other staff who work there are kind and helpful and restaurant is relaxing and have its own style and setup. Clean and cool during the summer but I will never go there again.

Eating El Toro was a wonderful experience. The restaurant was very warm and welcoming, the staff were very friendly and polite and they looked after you especially when you have a dietary requirement. The food was just amazing. Everything is made to order, which is just amazing.

Not for me. Whilst the staff were friendly, the service needs some refinement. Decorations were a bit of a mix, which made for a strange atmosphere. This isn't contributing to the review though. Food was ok, not great, just ok.

The food here is incredible there is nothing on the menu that doesn’t taste phenomenal! We love it here!! The service is equally amazing!! The cream cheese spinach is out of this world!!!!!

Had a lovely meal for my BIG 60th birthday tonight (Monday 27th) with my husband .... as I walked in saw my daughter, son in law & granddaughter were there as a big surprise !! Lovely food, steak was amazing, great service & will definitely recommend 😊

If you like steak then this place is perfect. Great selection of tapas/starters and lots of main courses to choose from. We had 3 steaks and 1 paella, all were delish! Fab service too.
