Great venue, service and great food. A perfect start to seeing Gary Oldman in krapps last tape in the theatre royal. Top marks all round

Came in towards the end of lunchtime, pub still reasonably busy for a mid-week afternoon. Nice setting combining a traditional pubby feel with more modern cafe style padded seats and wall art. I was a bit disappointed in the fish and chips. It was a large piece of fish well cooked in itself but the batter was on the soggy and oily side which I therefore didn't eat.

Popped in for a drink, not been in before. Friendly staff, very good selection of beers and lagers. Great looking building nice decor in keeping with its age. Sat in the window in 2 large winged fireside chairs.. Very comfortable.

Was in York for a rugby tour. This was the first pub we stopped in and didn't bother moving on. Great pints, knowledgeable and friendly staff

Lovely venue, great vibe, excellent service and variety of drinks. Lovely outdoor terrace, but would benefit from having electric provided to the heaters, when button was pressed unfortunately there was no heat. Fully appreciate we’ve had a warm spell, but temperatures vary throughout the day: Didn’t eat so can’t comment on food. Would highly benefit from a deep clean and attention to detail.

The Caesar salad was nice, but I wish I could have it twice.

Took some overseas visitors for dinner and drinks and they loved it. Food was very good - we had fish pie and steak and ale pies and sticky toffee desserts - beer likewise and the staff were very helpful and friendly. Reasonable value for money too. Top night, thank you.

York just gets more and more expensive - should have a residents badge so we can get a discount and stop paying tourist prices - not the only pub like this - this place consists of large rooms - no cosy alcoves so better for large groups

Beautiful view from the second floor - you can see the Minster! I’ve walked past this place many times when in York, but this time I decided to stop for a quick pint. Great selection of beers, and the prices are fair considering the location. I know some people say it's expensive, but honestly, it’s cheaper than in Leeds city centre. Find me a spot serving a good pint for under £6 (except Wetherspoons)!

Lovely cosy pub with a good drink selection and friendly staff, the kids menu was an excellent value and the ice cream was the size of my kids head! Delicious Sunday roast with lashings of thick gravy, although sadly no parsnips.

Stopped in here for a quick drink and ended up staying here for hours! A modern looking pub with a super cosy atmosphere. Great selection of beers. Didn’t have food here so can’t comment there - though the menu and the dishes coming out looked excellent!

Freezing and no music absolutely dead. Had to sit with my coat on to have my drink. Definetly not having another. Get your heating on and clean the ladies toilets it smells and certainly is not quaint or stylish believe me.

Old atmospheric pub with great food and wonderful service. What's not to like?

Came here for the first time with my partner her two nieces and our dog. Place was very well kept, very clean and had a great atmosphere. The food was incredible, and all the staff were very friendly. They even made some chicken for our dog too.

Lovely family meal. Seabass was excellent. Beef apparently also delicious. Service very good, attentive and eager to please. Only one complaint, the ladies toilets were in a very sad state. Only 2 out of 3 doors locked. None of the toilets flushed, so we're quite disgusting by the end of our visit. Also they were dirty, the doors, basins etc. A shame as the meal was great!

Food, atmosphere and service all reasonable. But oh boy what a scruffy, run-down, grubby looking place the E&C is. The toilets are also pretty grim. All of the decor, furniture, carpets and fittings need ripped out and the whole place refurbished. A very faded glory.

Visited with a group of work colleagues for our Christmas meal. From the beginning the organisation/communication was great, always replied to emails straightaway. On the day the food was great, and the service excellent- everyone had a fabulous time!

This review in no way reflects any service of the venue - this mistake happened due to my workplace, but I felt it was important to make people aware. This venue is not wheelchair accessible. There is step about 5 inches into the venue, then over a lip and two single doorways. Apparently (thought I cannot confirm this) when the venue was called and asked about access, they said they were wheelchair accessible, but unfortunately this was not the case. If you are ambulatory, you would absolutely be able to get in, or if you were willing to be lifted, you could again make it in. I think larger chair would struggle however. I did ask for a ramp, but was told there wasn't one available.

Loved the food, shame my first preference sold out but some very tasty dishes and just the best steak pie! Great to see chips actually home made too. We really enjoyed the Austrian white wine. It would be great to include something other than brownie or ice-cream for gluten free puddings, although nice, predictable and does not reflect the effort made in your main courses. Will definitely recommend to friends visiting York.

We were glad to get somewhere to eat during the Christmas market season. We sat up stairs and were a group of friends and 2 kids. There was an excellent kids menu and good range of gluten free options to suit our party. We ate from the main and the lunch menu - lunch menu VERY good value. The atmosphere was great and we were not rushed to turn around the table on a busy Saturday. Would return! Thanks!

We used Google review to find somewhere to eat while on a trip to York, however after finding it we queued at the bar for around 10 minutes and never saw the notice sat on the bar saying no walk ins for food accepted due to them being busy due to how busy the bar was. which is fair enough it's better than people paying and waiting hours but at least display the notice where it can be seen and

We had booked a table for fifteen and had a room to ourselves and the staff were friendly and helpful and the food was delicious.

This bar used to have one of the best stouts in York ...Berrista Stouts in town.. Now they have a crap IPA instead... and also offered a Guiness as replacement 🙄 what the Fk lost my respect as far as beers ..

Great atmosphere after a busy walk around York Xmas market before going to the Opera House to see Lucy Beaumont. Pub was buzzing, reserved table was ideal, food was great and service was wonderful. Definitely will go back

Been coming for 20 years, when it was Plunketts and Eagle. Last night was first time disapointwith the food. Staff did a great job and gave a complimentary drink, bout just felt disappointed. Also need to clear the massive black cobwebs hanging above the corner in the back

Excellent pub, we unwittingly ordered 2 steaks meals and a bottle of white wine without realising it was on a promotion deal...nice surprise when we received the final bill. We loved the cheese board and I loved the Leeds Leodis beer. Staff were excellent and a great friendly atmosphere. Revisited in November 2024 on a Sunday evening and still excellent, friendly pub with amazing food. Just love this pub, wish I had it near my home. Love the Leodis pilsner....just wish I could get it in bottles😥

Really helpful staff. They fitted us in despite being fully booked by moving people around. Excellent cask ales and reasonable selection of craft. Fish and chips were as good as any we've had anywhere. Light crisp batter. Scotch egg had runny yolk which, for me, is essential. Sausage and mash served with lovely veg and silverskin onion gravy.

Brilliant pub just inside the city wall. Great, fast service by the hard working staff. Well worth a try. Cask ale available.

Popped in for a drink on the way back to our hotel. Better ale selection than over the road (Hole in the wall) so I was very happy. Great atmosphere, service and drinks.

I got food poisoning after eating here. I was in York on holiday and chose to have dinner at the Eagle and Child after the pub was recommended to me. Any and all positives were negated after I fell violently ill with food poisoning later that evening. I called the pub numerous times, but the general manager, to whom I was directed to speak, was never available and never returned my calls.

The food was exceptional. Took very long to prepare and the seating area is ok but nothing fancy.

Wonderful pub, decent service, inedible food. Witness the medium rare steak. If you are going to charge 24 quid for a steak, buy some decent product and train the kitchen. Stay away from the food. Otherwise, great spot.

Kitchen opening hours versus what it says on the website are innacurate. Don't expect to be able to eat there.

Apart from the Coffee Machine not working which deprived me of a Scotch and Pudding...... Very good !!!!

The place isn't so bad if it weren't for the fact that it smells like a bathroom as soon as you enter. On the top floor it was even stronger and we had to open the windows next to the tables because of the bad smell. The bathroom was obviously the worst part because on top of that you couldn't open the window. The music was good at least. They have a good variety of beers and it is wide.

Food was nice till I found a small stone in my Chips. Ugh.

We were incredibly pleased with our choice of the Eagle and Child for a fairly informal wedding celebration lunch a couple of weeks ago, after such a positive initial welcome and our discussions to plan the day. We had a great welcome from the team and our guests had a fun afternoon. The food went down very well, with lots of compliments. It was also great to be somewhere the children were free to wander and play, thus staying occupied and making life easier for the parents amongst us.

A Proper Pub, right next to the Minster! I arrived very hungry on a Thursday evening around 8:30pm, the kitchen was officially closed. The team couldn’t have been more helpful, the chef kindly agreed to cook me a delicious beef burger which came with chunky chips and a garnish. A good traditional British pub menu, with pies/fish and chips and a selection of burgers. The courtyard pub garden was very peaceful, a relaxed atmosphere with plenty of people eating and drinking.

The place was disgusting, sticking to the carpets, very shabby all around, not at all like the photos on the website. We were meeting friends for a meal. I booked this place, never been in before even though we are regular visitors to York. Our friends had travelled from Liverpool. The meal was also very poor. We all ordered fish and chips, to be honest we would have gotten better from a chippy. None of the fish portions were the same, one so soggy it looked like it had been soaking in water, two undercooked and the fourth one looked like it had been double cooked the batter was so dark and the fish inside was exceptionally dry. I wanted to give our friends some true Yorkshire grub!!! I did really, because we found ourselves in a grubby pub, at a grubby table, with grubby food. The website is so misleading. Overpriced on my opinion. The place needs a good clean.

Always love a visit to this place: it's a decent size, yet feels small and cosy, there's a number of beers on cask and a packed fridge for lots of choice. When we visited on a weekend day, I enjoyed a funky track as part of a balanced and unobtrusive playlist. No music outside, so we had choice! Not tried the restaurant yet. One day, I'm sure.

I booked in a big tour group for dinner at Eagle & Child and I can’t fault it. When you can feed 20 Germans without a single complaint you know you’ve done something right. The food was delicious and the staff were friendly and welcoming. Top!

We had two excellent dinners here. Varied menu, with some interesting items. The server was friendly and able to make recommendations. We will definitely return when we are back in York in a few months.

Enjoyed a tasty burger here and spot of people-watching through the large street-facing windows. Food wasn't fancy but otherwise fine. Free wifi is good and the staff were really friendly. Good selection of beers and plenty of space, I enjoyed my visit.

Eagle & Child hosted an amazing reception for our small wedding. They were quick to reply to emails and arrange visits during the planning process, and made sure everything went smoothly on the day. They were able to cater to our request for all vegan food and drink, which even our non-vegan guests enjoyed. They’re the perfect option if you’re looking for an informal, affordable venue near the York Register Office.

Friendly staff, relaxed and cosy environment. We booked the top floor function rooms out for my mums surprise 50th birthday party and it was perfect for the occasion. Plenty of room with 3 interlinked rooms, our own bar, good lighting, plenty of plug points for our own music/karaoke/lights etc and not far from the toilets! Elliot, the general manager, was very attentive prior to the day and during and very laid back but responsive to requests in relation to food and decorations. We had a lovely sandwich buffet for £9 a head and there were children menus available too. Although the outdoor space was not private to our party, we were allowed to use the pretty beer garden during. Slightly expensive unredeemable room hire deposit, along with the price of drinks but all in all, a very good experience and I wouldn't hesitate to book for a future event. Really quite good. Nice place, good atmosphere, food was innovative and tasty. Wine a little so-so. Overall would really recommend as a change from the usual and good value!

I Stumbled across the Eagle and Child while walking around near York Minister It's run by The Leeds brewery and they had a couple of their cask beers plus a couple of guest beers available. They also had a range of keg beers too. The pub also did food but I didn't try the food but what I saw being served looked good. The staff were very friendly as well. But, please! No more Phil Collins. I was ready to drink a whole bottle of York Gin to get over the pain 😂.

Just around the corner from the Minster, this was a fun stop. Place was nearly full and had a great vibe. Plenty of cask ales served by younger staff who kept the place topped up. Interior is properly rustic yet modern and comfortable. Would absolutely return.

(This review is a bit late - our visit was 2nd March. Also posted review on Trip Advisor). I cannot rate this venue highly enough. We hired out the top floor for my boyfriend's birthday party. It was reasonably priced, & a great space, with a private bar included. The staff were so easy to deal with from the first email inquiry to on the day. We had sandwiches & chips which were lovely & brought our own cakes (which they found some candles for last minute as I'd forgotten them). Easiest 5 stars ever!!

Lovely pub, and food drinks and service were excellent. My first 2 choices were already off the menu so initially I was a bit disappointed but as soon as the pork tenderloin arrived all was well, it was delicious and no regrets! Chicken was also extremely good. Also very helpful comms re dietary requirements. Atmosphere was great too - having a drink in the front room and upstairs looked really nice. We were in the back which was fine but a little bit tucked away if you want a bit more buzz. The only slight negative point is it could do with a freshen up in places. New carpet in the back, bit of a scrub and decorating here and there would make it even better.
