nearly £10 for a jacket potato with chili con carne which i can only describe as liquid. barely any meat, or beans, or quite literally the chili con carne itself, just mostly water. potato was soft and not baked. wouldnt pay above a fiver for it.

Unlicensed midden from the 1970s. Awful food your nan used to make, complete with black rings in the eggs. Doesn't know what the main ingredients of a Ploughman's are. Kicked up a fuss over a family of five using two tables in a cafe with no tables with more than four chairs. Air extraction woefully inadequate for cooking food. Using a dehumidifier as an Aircon (labelled - "Please" be careful of air-conditioner - quotes not my own) Promised to support card payments, but it seemed to not be forthcoming at the end of the meal. ...wrote a rude reply, and doesn't know the different between "been"/"being" or "of"/"have" (though, if I'm honest, I enjoyed the rude reply! It feels good to be validated)

Dropped in here for lunch one day. Tea room is small but we managed to find a free table. Table service, with good selection of food, we both went for the Ploughman’s Lunch, it was very good. There some tasty looking cakes, but we managed to resist. Would certainly drop in again, when back in York.

Mediocre breakfast at best. Sadly, dropped in for a Saturday treat breakfast. Wish we hadn’t to be honest. Perfectly pleasant owner/server, tea was nice and toast well toasted but that was the end of the positives. We suspected it would be average when the owner/server told us that the reason for there being no fried eggs available was they only had a microwave. Watery and split scrambled egg followed. Accompanied by a cheap sausage and the most insipid cooked tomato. Bacon was on the “piggy” side of fresh. Sorry, an epic let down. Far better options almost everywhere else.

A traditional tea room with tea served in Bone China. For some reason this always makes the tea taste even better, Staff are welcoming and always happy to talk, service is quick and prices reasonable, Lemon Meringue was to die for in my opinion. Once visited you won't want to go anywhere else.

We stopped here for tea and cake at the end of a Saturday afternoon in York. The service was reasonably quick and the chocolate orange cake was good but far from exceptional, especially at £4.50 a slice. It was also very hot inside and whilst the staff were considerate enough to prop the door open to let in some air, it also let in the smell of cigarette smoke which spoiled our visit. Overall, I was left a bit disappointed and wishing I'd spent my £12 at one of the many other cafés in the area.

Wondering round York on a shopping visit (Sat 6 April 2024) ,I came across the Castle Tea Roms which is located on a side street ,it looked busy during the morning when i past by which is a good sign so I decided to return later on for some lunch & hopefully find a vacant table for 2 ..Access is by a few steps & inside is relatively small with only 9 tables available, all on the one level. Table service is provided by the staff on duty who I found to be very pleasant indeed .There's a good variety on the menu which includes breakfast items which are served all day, Lite bites ,Cream tea Special, Sandwiches, Toasties & Paninis with various fillings,,Jacket potatoes have an array of filling combinations aswel ,Salads,Cakes & tray bakes along with hot & cold drinks etc .Really surprisingly spoilt for choice to say its a small establishment & very reasonably priced .The service was good & my order of Tuna & cheese toastie ,Cinnamon Toast along with pot of tea for one & cappuccino coffee was very enjoyable. There's separate male / female toilets for customers and payments can be made by cash or card .After my 1st time experience during this vist ,I would return back again in the future & obviously recommend these cosy Tea Rooms .

My Daughter took me and her mum away for the weekend to York, and Sunday breakfast for mother's day, she wanted to take us to The Ivy but as it was mother's day it was fully booked, so after a walk round we found Castle tea rooms so we decided as we were starving to go in, and how glad we did it was a lovely experience and nice traditional tea room, i went for the full breakfast while others had beans on toast and bacon and tomato sandwich and I can honestly say it was far better than a ivy breakfast at half the price! The bacon was thick and top quality and my daughter wanted some cheese for her beans that was no problem for the staff who we had a chat and laugh with, all in all we had a great experience at great value and came away glad the ivy was full.

I am absolutely speechless at the message I have just received from Castle Tea Rooms now. We had booked a table for today at 1pm, however we were unable to travel to York due to family illness. As a result, we were unable to make the booking and have been preoccupied with this issue. However, I have just received a foul mouthed message directly from the business calling me a “disgusting human being” and they hope we “get the sh*ts” wherever we go. At no point today have we received a call from them to confirm the booking. Regardless, a business that thinks it’s acceptable to treat people like this should be avoided at all costs!
