Great meals, skilfully cooked and at reasonable prices. go on the days that the band is practicing in the market for an extra treat.

This cafe occupies a corner of the town Hall and operates whenever the pannier market is open. The food served is basic, simple fayre and is extremely keenly priced - you can expect a meal to cost around £4.50, which isn't bad going. Obviously, for that price, you can't expect top quality - a pie or suet pudding, mash potato and mixed veg is about as sophisticated as it gets, but it will certainly fill a hole.I would mark this place at 3.5 blobs - while the food is generally good (with only one or two "Menu Malfunctions", such as a "Mediterranean Vegetable Pudding" which was microwaved to within an inch of its life and was somewhat tasteless) you may experience one or two problems if you are in a group greater than 2 - tables are not always available, with the limited number of "4 place" tables being occupied by lone individuals who seem to go there for company and resolutely refuse to move to single tables. Also, bigger orders tend to be delivered piecemeal, meaning that those who receive their meal first are finishing by the time the last person is served. In summary, the food is generally good and the prices are keen, but remember that such a small outfit struggle to supply more than two meals at a time. If you are on your own and need simple sustenance then this is the place to go, but if you are part of a group of 20 then perhaps you should consider elsewhere.

Thank God for places like this. To be found in a corner of the Pannier Market a real 'Old Skool' classic. Superb value for money, friendly staff and good honest grub, can't beat it.

Gorgeous cream tea and the scones were slightly warmed. Best coffee of our holidays and courteous staff. We can’t fault anything we had. We even stayed for another cuppa. If only we lived locally as I’d come back again

What a lovely atmosphere in The Birdcage. We walked in and a small band were playing which was nice, love a bit of live music. The pub has a great layout with the music set up at one end and TV the other. We only popped in for a soft drink and ended up watching the footy . Great atmosphere and lovely staff. Will definitely pop in again for food. The menu looks great and reasonably priced. See you soon 😊

Good customer service, great outdoor location perfect to bring along the dog. Food OK, but cauliflower bowl, with jerk chicken was burned. Good food, just burnt, I think perhaps due to it being very busy.
