The pizzas were very good. The service was quick and efficient. It was pretty quite when we visited so the atmosphere wasn’t great.

As another pizza restaurant lost our booking, I had to find a last minute place for a table of 9 on a Wednesday evening. I called pizza punks and luckily they had space for us which I greatly appreciate. Drinks were nice, although overly sweet and overpriced for size. Even though the restaurant was pretty empty, the pizzas took a long time. One of our pizzas was made wrong and a friend didn’t even have a pizza before we had all finished. Although the lady serving was extremely friendly, it seemed like they were understaffed and it was hard to get their attention even to pay the bill as multiple large tables came in towards the end of our meal. The pizzas were nice and I enjoyed being able to add unlimited toppings.

A true dining experience in lovely surroundings both inside and out. Staff were efficient, observant and polite in a friendly manner. Almost too good as the main meal arrived before we could tuck in on the bread platter and used dishes were cleared so quickly that we felt a little rushed even though we still had plenty of time left allocated to our table. Best crumble topping I have tasted for years . Wish I lived nearer - I’d become a ‘regular’.

Our server was awesome! He overheard us talking about our interests and joined in chatting and made us feel so relaxed. Food was lush, cocktails were amazing. awesome experience!

Booked for 3 pm on a Saturday. Arrived at 2.55 to be told that the table wasn't ready, still waiting at 3.05 while they put a few round tables together. Sat with the menus for a while until they came to take the drinks order. I asked for a glass of tap water to go along with the lager I ordered which never arrived. Food order was taken after half an hour of waiting with the pizzas arriving quite promptly after that, nothing much to say about the pizza, bit bland really even with the toppings I had. Service was abysmal with nobody coming to see if we needed any more drinks or was everything okay, staff seemed to be more focused on the bottomless brunch people. Need more training really, not good to be ignored. Won't be going back. Going to go to Rudy's on Silver Street instead.

Can't believe how delicious their pizza was!! Love that you can choose your own toppings and the variety to choose from is superb, I was surprised what a brilliant pizza I'd invented! It was delicious! Managed to squeeze 20 of us in for an intromptu lunch which was impressive! Thank you!

This was a little disappointing for a place of the calibre of the Durham Ox. My wife had the prawns to start and the batter was not the best, it was accompanied by a salad which tasted a bit old. When her main course chicken came, the same salad was served as an accompaniment, whuch undermined it a bit. I had the soup of the day which was excellent, but the main course fish and ships whilst a large portion was good but not exceptional. The fish was ok, but the batter far too greasy. The taster hummus and bread was superb. So mixed overall, and not up to the standard of our last visit. My wife mentioned the concern over the salad, but nothing was done about it.

Slow service to say we were the only people in there. And the food was overly greasy and salty.

We enjoyed a fantastic Sunday lunch here on 25th February. The food and service were excellent. We will definitely be returning.

Overall the meal was good and value for money. Only down side was I felt the green vegetable selection was undercooked and sharper knives needed. Staff very attentive , would recommend and will return

Booked a table for family and was turned away as they had not sent confirmation email, our party of 22 was left with nowhere to eat. Poor organisation who didn't even offer to accommodate us.

There were six of us all having different main courses. All beautifully served and, as always, delicious. It’s a great place to go.

The vegetables were crunchy and not cooked properly, the chicken was disgusting, made me feel sick, the gravy on top made it even worse. Only good thing about it was the mash which you get 🤏 this much of. Don’t go here, it sucks. Would not reccomend

Lovely place, was just disappointed because my partner ordered the Roasted tomato soup for starter but when it arrived she received Broccoli and Stilton soup we told the staff that it wasn't what she ordered only to be told 'yes sorry we have ran out of the tomato soup so gave this one instead' If they had ran out you would think they SHOULD have told us this from the off and let her make another choice straight away not waiting until they arrived. She doesn't like Broccoli and Stilton there for sat without a starter

The Ox was excellent as was the lamb. First class.

We decided to visit again for Valentines. This is a progressive attractive pub/restaurant in a pretty elevated village. We have always enjoyed coming but were sorry they had nor entered into the Valentines Day theme with decorations or special menu items, but again we had a good time and will go again.

We had an absolutely amazing time - the food was delicious- very tasty - plated ‘just so’ perfect - the surroundings was perfect not too busy - Evan on valentines !! The music was at a nice volume not too overpowering- the staff are a brilliant team and can’t do enough for you !! We love it and whenever we can get a babysitter it’s our first choice !

The Staff were friendly and efficient and attended to our needs from the moment we arrived, even getting us seated ahead of our booking time. The food was exceptional and the ambiance was perfect for a Valentines experience. We would highly recommend this venue and restaurant

Very disappointing. Service was poor - extremely sullen looking barman / manager. He took our order but didn’t smile once - he was verging on rude. We ordered drinks but no one asked if we would like another when these were drunk. Staff looked like they didn’t want to be there. Food was just about ok, nothing special - halibut was over cooked and the potatoes on both our meals looked liked they’d been made three weeks earlier and left on the side. very pricy considering. We won’t be going back. Such a shame as it used to be such a good pub - clearly no one cares anymore. If the owner reads this please note that customers won’t put up with this for long - get rid of your manager or you will end up having to close!

Beautiful place. The food was lovely. Great service and not rushed. We had the shared surf and turf platter. My only criticism is there was too much batter on the fish dishes otherwise it was lovely. Large portions. The squid was excellent.

Amazing restaurant the food was delicious top quality master chef style! everything was amazing, I’ve been to Le rock in Sandi are and this restaurant is just as good, the food was the best I’ve had! the staff are the nicest bunch of girls ever they made us feel at home, such a lovely atmosphere, the chefs have so much talent we can’t wait to go back we love it so much

Great food - the pork belly and chateaubriand were excellent. Combined with an overnight stay to enjoy the drinks selection too. Visited a few times and always consistently high standards.

We visited for a 40th Italian Tapas birthday evening and we were not disappointed. We were shown to a lovely little table in a secluded booth which was perfect for our group. The girls were very attentive and the service overall was spot on. The food all came out all together and was absolutely delicious! Very reasonably priced too. We will return 🤩

We were a party of 4 we all had 3 courses and really enjoyed the choices we made from a wide ranging menu. The gentleman who served us was attentive throughout and added to a great dining experience. Will definitely visit again

The Durham Ox provided a fab evening of food and surprisingly varied drinks. It may look like old school/tradition pub, but there are some nice twists to the menus and to make it that little bit different and special. I would recommend this place to a friend

Really enjoyed our meal at the Durham Ox. The food was delicious and the service was very good.

Absolutely rubbish. Firstly they wouldn't let us book a table as it's "bookings only" so I went onto the website and booked a table for 5 minutes time. Got seated and left for 25 minutes before our order was taken, then it took them 30 minutes to pour 2 beers and a cocktail. Then we waited another 45 minutes for our pizza. My pizza was missing several toppings and it was average at best. Not once did anyone ask us are we okay for drinks etc. Then they added a 10% discretionary service charge on the bill. It appeared they had 2 chefs and 2 waiters/waitresses for the entire place. Needless to say won't bother going back, I genuinely can't remember coming away from a restaurant so disappointed.

We have been here many times but the food and service today for Sunday lunch was really disappointing . Risotto was inedible , very peculiar sour taste ( off butter or cream?) Love all the individual ingredients so not sure what went wrong with it . We commented to waiter but no feed back given . It was £33 and none of it was eaten except the halibut on the top which had a soggy skin , not crispy. Roast potatoes were re heated so waxy and not crispy , just tasted old. Cold plates and food . Beef too thickly sliced . Nicely cooked pink but couldn’t cut it . Puddings excellent as always . Service was terrible . After waiting 10 minutes to order a drink on arrival the drinks were left on the bar for 5 minutes so we picked them up ourselves and brought to the table . We were not handed drinks or menus for atleast 10 minutes . We had to ask for everything no one looked after us . Prices here are high which we are happy to pay when service and food are high quality but sadly neither were good yesterday

First visit and it won’t be the last. Thoroughly enjoyed the food and the atmosphere. All staff were fantastic. Recommend Sunday lunch.

Had an excellent meal for a family of 8. We were sat in a booth so all together. Great service and delicious food. 5 star. Had to prebook, leave a deposit and send pre orders so needed to be organised - all went very smoothly. Thoroughly recommend.

A wonderful stay at the Pool Villa. Top marks all round for the food, facilities and staff! We will be back!

First time Sunday Lunch. Place was packed, lively but not overly noisy. Very cosy. The staff were attentive and polite. Sunday roast was fantastic. Well cooked, lots of flavour and plenty of it. Will definitely return.

Great wheat free options, pick your own was great, but a lot was spicy, aka the pepperoni. Not great for my kiddos, and I think a kids menu would have helped them choose or build a meal better. It wasn't busy, and my service wasn't speedy, but the music and the vibe were good. Defo more drinks and food with friends than family. Paid £6 for a kids drink ooosh, I mean a cocktail, yes, but lemonade no.

As always, the The Durham Ox was perfect for what we needed, a simple business lunch for three in delightful surroundings.

Thoroughly enjoyable experience - seated by the fire. Broad range of food on the menu. 2nd time visiting & had the chicken butter curry, absolutely beautiful and really nicely presented. Apple crumble cheesecake for pudding was also lovely. 10/10 great service too

Came for the bottomless brunch and had such a great time. The service from Florence was excellent and absolutely made the day. No waiting around for drinks she couldn't do enough for us. Highly recommend.

Fantastic food, the service was not so good however, unacceptably long wait (over an hour) for the main meals. The waitress was very apologetic and offered us drinks on the house. It's just a shame that a fantastic experience was turned into an OK experience.

We went during December, it didn't get off to a good start with our drinks order being wrong. Sadly, there was only the Christmas menu available. No choices for vegetarian celiac, but the staff were helpful and did me just vegetables and nut roast. Sadly wasn't a substitute for the yorkshire pudding or stuffing, and vegetables were sparse. I do like my vegetables on the al dente side, but they were hard. There wasn't a child's vegetarian menu either, so he had the same as me - but again couldn't have the yorkie. Nice setting, very busy (and loud) - this could be due to the time of year. Staff friendly.

We took family for their Christmas menu - and only two of us actually chose that off the menu. We all really enjoyed our meals: tasty, plentiful and for one of us, Coeliac safe. The fire was blazing and the twinkling Christmas decorations made the pub warm and festive. The staff were as usual, friendly and accommodating. Recommend highly.

I’d read some reviews last week that didn’t give very pleasant reviews. Open minded yesterday evening my wife and I visited and it was outstanding, start to finish, highly recommend and will definitely revisit.

We had a great table in a quieter section which was perfect and the food was excellent.

Serving staff were very patient with one of our party who was very fussy. They went out of their way to be helpful.

We popped in on Boxing Day for a bite to eat, we are not from Durham so found this place by accident and so glad we did. I had a margherita and it was done perfectly, for something so simple it's easy to get it wrong! The husband is vegetarian and was really pleased with the choices available on the 'build your own'. The service was excellent and our chaps Reece and Ryan were so friendly and chatty. 2 pizzas plus drinks were just over £30 so pretty good value. Looking forward to getting back at some point!

We met friends and enjoyed a meal in warm, friendly surroundings. The food was good and served with a smile. The lamb was presented at varying stages of cooking to suit each taste. The bread and hummus was delicious and the sweets were beautiful and full of flavour. The wine was well kept and lovely.

Best gastro pub in Yorkshire, set in beautiful countryside and close to York. Menu has something for everyone, from the usual burgers and fish and chips to high end steaks and fresh seafood. Very cosy ambience and even the dog enjoyed it!

Main meal arrived before we had chance to eat our bread and hummus. Such a rush to get food out. 3 tiny manikins of veg for 3 people. Pork not great. Very little gravy. Has it changed hands as not as good as it used to be.

Great place, good staff but let down by the quality of the veg. Roast potatoes soft inside but leather skins and the knifes are blunt so impossible to cut the skins, carrots not drained sufficiently, brocali obviously microwaved and stalks still hard. Cauliflower with cheese was good Don’t like service charge being added as default

I honestly don’t think we have ever had such nice food in our life’s!! We stayed over in the accommodation Saturday until Sunday we were very lucky to get a table for on the Saturday night and you do normally have to book that’s how good the place is. Also it shows how Lauren and her team will do anything to help and accommodate you! We had prawn cocktail to start my husband had a mushroom and cheese sauce both amazing then we had ribeye steak both cooked amazing… Sunday we loved the steak that much we had it again amazing.. this place is so so special, Lauren, Rachel, Lois.. and the team thank you so very much for accommodating us and looking after us through out…. Sorry if I was abit annoying I don’t get out much especially with the kids… I drink gin like it’s going out of fashion .. thank you all so much Money well spent! It was worth every penny…. Everyone needs a Durham ox in there life’s!!! And everyone needs people like you lot! Always happy.. always talk to people regardless of the time of day or night.. so kind lovely people!! And you will help anyone who asks… people like you are never forgotten! The whole experience was just incredible.. my mum always used to say you get what you pay for… and you certainly do at the Durham ox the food and service is outstanding ❤️ Cannot wait to come again and thank you all merry Christmas!!!! Everything was perfect except the short bread biscuit with the brûlée. As a pastry chef this was not good. Not short and buttery. More tough and margeriny! Otherwise all as excellent.

Excellent food. Impeccable service. Table wasn’t in a great position we felt in the way of everyone coming in and out and someone did walk into it at one point.

Staff very attentive. Good value for money. The veggie option was a bit dry and stodgy but the rest of the food was great. The pub could have been a bit warmer. The staff did a great job of keeping a large work party separate from other diners. A good experience.

Highly Enjoyable with friendly efficient service

Asked to remove the service change £22 (4 adults) and was interrogated as to why. Very strange - it did not feel very discretionary. Service was slow and ordered drinks that didn’t come. Couldn’t complain about the food itself, but the £80 sharing board for Sunday dinner felt very over priced with 3 potato’s & 1 Yorkshire pudding each. (Which fell of the board onto my knee with no replacement). The pub ambience & Beef was lovely, but wouldn’t return
