Dunes Bar & Restaurant in Rother

I’m relieved to see this establishment has closed its doors. My experience there was one of the worst I've ever encountered, especially considering I live in the area and never expected to face such blatant racism in my own community. The owners, Jimmy and Carol, were never friendly right from the start, and it's astonishing that they managed to operate this restaurant for so long. I had often walked past it without giving it much thought, but this time I was with a few friends and thought we would give it a try. Unfortunately, the way we were treated was nothing short of appalling. We stood in the middle of the dining area for at least 15 minutes without even a greeting. It’s hard to believe they could miss us, as there were four of us waiting. The waitstaff glanced at us several times but never made the effort to approach. I can’t help but wonder if our Asian descent played a role in their indifference. Despite the available seating, we chose to wait out of respect. I sincerely hope they never reopen a restaurant. If they do, I hope they learn a valuable lesson in customer service.

Absolutely gutted you've closed down. Probably the best roast I've had in Sussex for a long time. Good luck for the future with whatever you decide to do. You'll be missed

The people are very welcoming and friendly. They do a lovely roast dinner and provide great service very quick.

Found this place after a long walk and in dire need of some food and drink. We decided to try the roast lunch. The lamb and beef were plentiful and tasty. Washed down by a couple of nice cold lagers. Staff were pleasant and friendly without being in your face. The place had a good atmosphere. Outdoor seating available plus a pool table if you are interested. Well worth a visit if you are passing.

Sunday roast was great. Lamb and beef were both absolutely amazing. Portions are a decent size. We will definitely be back!

Great food and great service, thank you for a lovely meal, they seated us with no wait and our food came quickly enough to know it wasn't cooked in the microwave.

I absolutely loved the Garlic chicken, very well served with yum yum chips and salad and dressing. Was also pleased that they are dog friendly and had a bowl of water for my two puppies after a long walk on the beach.

Large portions of food for lunch, service from Ali was fantastic but only 4 for atmosphere as there were so few of us in there. Sunday's it's heaving for their roast dinner. Nice and clean in there, always a good sign. Will definitely go back.

Well appointed, clean & pleasant, friendly staff, not busy on the Saturday lunchtime we were there. Quiet except for a TV playing in the background. The menu is varied and interesting, not just the usual stuff many places churn out. Recommended

Had another lovely visit here! Always friendly and accommodating. We visited as a party of six, with my six year old son, my elderly parents and my sister who has learning difficulties. Even the fussiest among us was kept happy by a good meal and nice atmosphere. Staff are always friendly and try and meet your needs where possible. New menu was a hit. As a vegetarian the halloumi burger was fab! Would love to see it on the lunch menu too! Thanks again and see you soon.

Started really well. We chose to sit outside as our dog can bark when people approach - he only barks once not continuously. Unfortunately after eating and paying the chap serving us said he didn't like our dog (a schnauzer) barking. We had already apologised but he said he didn't like it and made it clear we should leave. Of course it's up to the pub who they serve but if your dog barks keep away.

Found this place by accident when looking for alternatives to the fayre provided on park! Excellent food, great prices, fantastic friendly service! Will hopefully get chance to come again during our stay in Camber!

Went in for fish and chips, did not disappoint.

Very mediocre food My burger came with stale fries and pizza sauce as dip.

Had a positive experience eating here. I found this bar/restaurant by chance searching for a local restaurant whilst visiting Camber sands. The place was nicely laid out and the staff were attentative. The Food was served in good time and well presented. I visited twice whilst in the area. I had a Jamaican style vegan rice dish and the halloumi burger both were very enjoyable! The lemon drizzle cheesecake was perfect to, lovely and light with balanced flavour. The bar had a warm friendly atmosphere and I enjoyed chatting to the staff later in the evening. This is my top choice of places to eat/drink in Camber!

I've read some poor reviews of The Dunes and that's not the Dunes I know . The restaurant itself is lovely with a nice atmosphere and has a nice outside seating area for those balmy summer evenings , the Owner and his team are lovely people ( and we've spent time with them getting to know them ) , the food is excellent and freshly cooked . The bar carries a wide range of beers and spirits .If your eating in Camber you need to try The Dunes .

We had an aweful experience - its really gone downhill. Food took ages and was basically cheap frozen fodder. Overpriced.

I went there last night with my husband, two daughters and our dog Lola for dinner. On arrival we were directed to our table which we reserved in advance. Our order for food and drinks were taken promptly and all looked pretty promising. We ordered burger and chips, barbeque chicken skewer and plaice with a garlic butter, hallumi and cheesy fries. The biggest disappointment was the plaice which wasn't cooked well. It arrived as a soft mushy watery mess with absolutely no taste at all same with the prawns. The asparagus seemed to me like it had been boiled and was served soggy. I definitely would not recommend this dish!!!! The rest of the food was okay. It would be better to reduce the menu as I think people would much prefer fewer choices cooked well rather than lots of dishes which are mediocre. We also ordered two aperol spitz which we left as they tasted just awful. All in all we would not go back to this establishment.

We were a party of 6 here and the Service couldn’t be worse. They kept looking over and running of when we saw them, after food was delivered they ignored our request for sauces and the food took ages to arrive. The Mac and Cheese had no Red Leicester despite it being said it would on the menu. The food was okay in my opinion, I ate it and enjoyed it. Most of the service was terrible but we couldn’t help but notice it was on Waitress mainly.

Never known service so bad, I politely ask the elder burgundy headed woman a question and was answered with an abrupt response while stuffing her face with a pot noodle and pointing her fork in my face however her two colleagues (don’t know there names) an older blonde lady and a younger brunette lady who I see in there often was extremely helpful and said to her you can’t eat and talk to customers furthermore,I had noticed she addressed other customers as MATE absolutely appalling people skills even to her own team,how this woman is still a part of this business is beyond me Meanwhile food was great and other waitresses and bar stewards were very polite and hard working I will be avoiding at all cost when this purple haired woman is working

Family meal here on Sunday ,staff so friendly and helpful, nothing was to much trouble ,food lovely , and reasonably priced for the area ,will definitely go back when I'm in the area again .

Service was slow - had to go up to say we were ready to order , waited 30 mins for a starter , then a further 45 mins for the main - one course came out as the wrong order , made another one but that took 20 mins by which time I left it as had gone past hungry…. False apologies, still paid for the food I didn’t eat . Awful …. Relies on there being very little choice in the area. Was told I had ordered the wrong burger - as I don’t eat beef for religious reasons I specifically asked for chicken … good service would be to not charge for the burger I waited over an hour for and didn’t eat

Absolutely loved eating here with the family. Staff were fantastic and the food was excellent.

First time we have been here - we noticed tbe outside had been refurbished and there is a great choice of seating areas both inside and out. Tasty beers and looked like a good choice of food. Would definitely go back to give that a try another time

Absolutely lovely place to come out for a drink or food. We came here two nights while on our holiday and would 1000% come again and recommend. Food was really good, enjoyed by my partner and step son. Very clean and lovely decor. Staff were so friendly and accommodating. Probably the most welcoming of places I’ve been in a while. My step son loved the staff also, they gave him 2 balloons and made him laugh. Prices are very reasonable!

Please don’t waste your money on food in here unless you enjoy bland, basic food. The roast is the worst I’ve experienced, it’s even more annoying when you have to pay at the end knowing how poor it was 🤢

We come on holiday every year and have to have the roast lamb Sunday dinner.

Sara our waitress was freindly, helpful and attentive. Food was good quality and reasonably priced. Had run out of real ale though which was a shame.

Disgusting food, Obscenely overpriced. Not family friendly whatsoever & discriminates against disabled non verbal children. Steak can’t be cooked how you like so they might as well just say we cook it how we like & you will like it or leave. No customer service skills from any staff member they all need training in how to look after paying customers. Check out other’s reviews I wish I had some before spending nearly £100. What a waste & ruined a family meal out

Visited at the weekend, was not happy with the food I was served, I mentioned this to the man who was serving us… I explained that the rice was very watery and resembled porridge or risotto also it tasted horrible, it was quite honestly horrible, I mentioned this to the man serving me and his response was what do you want me to do about it, everyone else has eaten it. I really should have taken a picture and expose the rice. Awful response will not be eating there again. Thank you

I've been coming to Camber for quite a few years now. And over those years Dunes has crept up the list off places to visit while here. It's always been solid. A good choice of drinks and food. But recently the service has got amazing. On our most recent visit on a pretty normal day we were looked after really well by the staff. The drinks were nice and the food was tasty and plentiful. It's the first pub from the beach so it needed try do hard perhaps, but it also seems popular with the locals which must help year round. Really worth checking out if you are in the area and in need of refreshment

There does t seem to be a lot of restaurants to choose from in Camber so we were pleasantly surprised when we found Dune …. We stopped for an early dinner on the way back from the beach. This is clean, nicely decorated bar / restaurant with a good selection of drinks and nice choice of pub meals. We experienced pleasant service from all staff. The weather was so nice that we could sit outside to eat. The outdoor area probably seats around 20 /30people - the indoor area seats a lot more. We would definitely go back..

Very friendly and welcoming atmosphere, accommodating to all our needs. Portion sizes are outstanding worth every penny. Would certainly recommend.

Came down to camber from ashford for a beach drip originally popped in for a drink before a walk and service was quick and friendly, food was next level 👌 would recommend 100%

Not only the food is very basic and bland (with no other seafood/fish on Sundays apart from fish and chips next to the beach!) but my 3 year old almost swallowed a sharp plastic bit that was on her ice cream - when telling to staff they didn’t even said sorry although went straight away to the kitchen to let the cooks know. Only good bit is of you want to have a really cheap meal close to the beach.

Had the worst experience in my life, never felt so discriminated. The staff were unhelpful and rude, they didn’t take any notice of us as we arrived and made us feel unwelcome for the short time I stayed there. It got to a point where I didn’t want to stay any longer and walked out. Will not be back. Not worth the money.

Really disappointed today. Really felt like they didn't want us to come and spend our money. The staff were very hostile and no banter. The beer lines 100% needed to cleaned. Food was good but very bargain ingredients. They made a mistake and bought out a jacket potato instead of a baguettes which wasn't a problem but they put the slightly warm prawns into the baguettes. When asking if we had been charged for a jacket potato the waitress was very rude saying it was the kitchen faults not hers. There really wasn't an issue but if we had been charged too much we just wanted the extra returned. The pub itself is beautiful but perhaps rather than the staff just leaning and chatting away from the customers they could give the place a little clean. The place was very dusty and the cocktail glasses looked awful even though you couldn't have a cocktail as they had sold out of all the pre mix

First time to Dunes Bar after moving to the area 5 months ago. Great atmosphere and comfortable and modern decking area outside. None of the 'screening' when booking at the local pub and everyone was welcomed and treated the same. Food (lunchtime) is varied from sandwich type fare to good range of cooked food. The fish and chips and burger my wife and I had were excellent. Wide choice of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. Only downside was the lack of staff during a busy weekend. Despite this the service could not be faulted. I had seen a free negative reviews before visiting but thought that I would make my own decision. We all round cannot be faulted. 5 stars!

This a lovely bar with a warm welcome and great atmosphere. I can't comment on the food although we intend to eat here tomorrow. I'll update afterwards. Menu looks good with traditional English food. Good selection of drinks. A clean beach side pub. Locals (always a good sign) and holiday makers shared the space harmoniously.

Lovely food and great atmosphere

A lovely restaurant in Camber sands. They serve good till 9pm, the menu has lots of options and the portions and very generous. Staff were lovely when we went, very nice and accomodating even on the very busy nights they were having.

Seafood salad had too much sauce, the sauce should be in a separate container and not smothered on top. The mac cheese was ok. Staff was friendly, but the place was badly decorated.

We eat here every time we visit Camber on holiday but unfortunately, due to COVID we haven't been for a couple of years, however, we were able to return this week and the food was lovely and tasty as always and the staff were all very friendly and helpful. Thanks for a lovely evening, we'll definitely be back.

This restaurant has bottles of vinegar on the tables. I had a haddock and chips. The chips had been cooked in the same oil as the fish so tasted of batter. They may have cooked them twice as they were quite oily. I managed to eat about three chips and left the rest. The haddock was fine.

After staying and eating at Pontins, this restaurant was a perfect find. The food was amazing as well as the service and we have booked to go again before we go home. Highly recommended

Friendly and efficient service. However, our food was poor. The Burger was dry, could have easily come out of a Findus box. “Chips” were dry and the onion rings were shocking. The Lamb “Tagine” had never seen a Tagine. More like a bland lamb stew with some carrots. If you enjoy good, quality food, don’t come here.

We came here to have an early dinner before driving back to Bromley. The chips were delicious, very crunchy on the outside but fluffy potato inside. The burger was also very nice.
