Ok we’d been at an event in Capel Surrey all day and just wanted something to eat, looked on internet for nearest place that did food and The Duke was the place!!! Into our cars we jumped to go this bar and grill! ( our friends only eat plain food so ideal!!!) looks ok from outside, car parking was a bit tight but we were in!!! Asked for a table was asked if we’d booked, sorry no we said, not a problem!! Thought smells a bit spicy! We were shown to our table which we notice the cloth was dirty straight away! my hubby went and got our drinks and bar staff told him to order our drinks with the waiter if we needed more! waiter came with menu, please can we order two drinks? No you go to bar ( but bar staff said we’re to ask you! Don’t bother we’ll go and get it.... menu.,,, oh no it’s an Indian! Oh they’ll do plain food surely!? On the menu it had chicken nuggets and chips or fishfingers and chips! We place our order our friend ask is there any plain food as they can’t eat spices ( Indian) no just we can’t do anything other than chicken nuggets oh dear ok we’ll have that ( we’re tired now!!) they also order poppadoms just poppadoms ( they don’t eat any of the sides which they charge separately for ) they are nearly finished eating the poppadoms when the waiter comes back to say ‘ sorry sir they no got any chicken nuggets here would you like just plain chicken?’ Dohhh that’s what we asked for in the first place!!! When it arrive it looked like it had been deep fried as it was hard and dry!!! He didn’t enjoy at all! They didn’t have any vinegar! When we asked for the bill he tried charging in £2.60 for the 70p poppadoms AND all the chutneys etc which we told him not to leave but he did!!! Although we had a bit of hassle my hubby and my food was very tasty! But don’t think we shall be rushing back!!

Just such a lovely pub!! Popped in for a spot of dinner on a Tuesday evening. Wendy was very welcoming and nothing by nher or her staff was too much trouble. The food was absolutely fantastic off of the 'specials' board, both having the duck. Presented beautifully, piping hot and delicious!! Desserts were also as nice. All staff were very nice and customer service is obviously paramount. The pub itself is inviting, spacious and spotlessly clean. Looking forward to returning very soon.

Called in at lunchtime, expecting normal pub grub. Presented with an Indian cuisine menu.Mighty glad we did. The pub now hosts The British Raj (Indian Restaurant) which was previously at Thr Surrey Hills venue. Mine host ...Mike was on hand to serve a selection of drinks(including some nice real ales) and take the food order, I suppose we have become accustomed to eating Indian food in the evenings, but every one of us agreed that the food at lunch-time was fresh, tasty and well presented, even the nan bread was the best we have tasted. Clear plates at the end was testament to this. Also catered for delivery to the surrounding area in the evenings. Lunchtime is a short window 12 noon until kitchen closes at 2.00 p.m. We will return. Situated on the southbound A24....Slow down as soon as you pass the Newdigate junction...turn left onto pubs own car park.

As we want to explore Surrey going to winery,We stop at the duke heads pub . There meals varies from £15 pounds to £21 pounds . It was a friendly atmosphere and the garden was so nice ,that when the weather is good. You can eat and dine outside. They have parking at the front and at the back. We have a nice beer and coffee to relax with. The lady who seems to be the owner was so friendly and welcoming. Staffs are friendly and people around talked to you. It was a lovely compact pub that seems used to be a village house . We enjoyed our photo takings and relaxing time.

Made a booking online for lunch and after not hearing back from them called up on the day to confirm. Told that they're not serving food and haven't been for 6 weeks. Now another TripAdvisor review tells me that it's longer than this (at least since 2nd June). Person on the phone apologetic and surprised by the website, but after almost 2 months I'd expect the website to have been updated so it doesn't have a menu on it or a facility to book a table.

Arrived at lunch time after checking on the website about their food options. Told at the door that they're not doing food, while they "re-evaluate" what they offer, and that the kitchen is closed until further notice. Really annoying. If you stop serving food at least update your website.

On wednesdays to Saturdays until 9pm, the bar food e.g. scampi and chips is just over £5. I previously used the main restaurant and it is excellent, but if you can't afford to and just want a reasonably priced meal .... the bar food is good. Choice of 5 meals. Curiously not mentioned on pub's website. They should; it's a slightly different market

Having recently held a double family birthday celebration at the Dukes Head, we would certainly recommend it for its delicious food at reasonable prices. The South African dishes were very interesting to try and very much enjoyed by all. The wine list, although not extensive, was well priced and a South African red very much hit the mark and was good value. All in all, a thoroughly enjoyable evening with attentive service, superb food and excellent wine. We shall return.

Estoy tratando de definir este restaurante. . When I booked for my Husband's Birthday I specified that we wanted to eat off the main menu but when we arrived we were told that there was only one choice and that was the mixed roast. When I said that we would go elsewhere, we were allowed to order off the main menu, however only the burger was available and everything else would take over 30 minutes to cook. We had no option to have a roast or a burger. There was an amazing log burner but it wasn't lit and it was bloody freezing especially when the outside door was opened. The roast was lukewarm, the veg was cold & I had 4 small roast potatoes. However the child portion had 12 small roast potatoes and more meat than the adult portion. This is a local pub to us and we were seriously disappointed but the service was amazing, just let down by the management & kitchen

We were attracted to the Dukes Head by the South African-style menu it advertised and we were not disappointed. There are plenty of authentic nods to the rainbow nation's cuisine in the menu (potjekos, mini bunny chows, surf n turf combos etc) but it's not so exotic that it would chase away those with more unadventurous English palates. The portions were generous and the food perfectly cooked. If you're looking for a good steakhouse meal, this must be one of the best places around. The restaurant was a little quiet when we first arrived (the weather was quite grim) but filled up later in the evening. I can imagine it rocking when they have a full house. The service was friendly and attentive. My only regret is we were too full after our (shared) starter and mains to try to traditional South African deserts which sound pretty good. Next time.

My nephew recently hosted his birthday celebrations at The Dukes Pub and Grill in Beare Green. All in all there were 10 booked for the evening and we arrived half an hour early. We were asked if we wanted to go to the table but decided to order a drink from the bar and my partner and I spent a most comfortable time huddled around the fire. The rest of the party arrived and our very gracious host,Carla, showed us to our table and very swiftly we were enjoying a drink and scanning the varied menu. Carla ensured that we understood the predominantly South African menu and I ordered a bunny chow starter and a fillet steak . My partner ordered the tempura prawn starter and the salmon fillet as a main course. In the interim we also ordered a bottle of Ken Forrester Chenin Blanc from the varied wine menu. The food was excellent and the manager and Head Chef, Sean, was on hand to ensure that our expectations were met.Carla introduced us to the Soweto Toilet Bowl which was a "shooter" which, barring the dubious colouring, was amazing. We then finished off with a Springbok shooter which is peppermint and Amarula Cream. This alone was enough to bring us back, repeatedly. The rest of our party were unanimously very impressed and we wobbled out to our waiting cab promising to return shortly.

We visited at about 12.30 on a sunny Sunday lunchtime with a group of friends looking for a relaxed pub lunch with space for the kids to play. Having been a few weeks ago we recommended it to our friends based on it having a play areally and reasonably price kid friendly food... unfortunately neither were available today!!! When we arrived we were pleased to find plenty of seats available in the garden - but then the whole experience deteriorated from there. To start with the play area was closed for refurbishment. Fair enough, it had looked in need of some TLC last time we visited, but to not have it available on a sunny weekend in August seems odd timing. Then to just have a bit of tape across so us parents have to deal with kids seeing it but not able to use it is like torture to them!- Then the menu had changed. Gone were the cheap and chearful pub lunch favourties of scampi and chips and baguettes/ sandwiches that sort of thing. Now all expensive elaborate dishes. Nothing under £10 on the menu. The kids menu was no better. No fish fingers meant we just got him a portion of chips rather than spend £9 on kids sunday roast or £6 for kids meal with odd choices like steak (?!!) Or sliders (what are they - no description on menu!) and drumsticks. - Then there was the massive issue of most of our group not being able to order food! As a group of several families we were going to all sit together but order and pay separately. We ordered fine. Next family were told that someone would be out to take their order in a minute - but never came. Then another family tried to order and were told that there would be a 45 - 1 hour wait for food. This despite the pub looking pretty empty and our food arriving very quickly. It was a disaster!!! We were sitting there with our food while the other families we were with hadn't even been allowed to place their order and had a group of very hungry children. In the end they had to give up and leave us to it to go and find food elsewhere to feed their kids, while we were stuck there feeling very guilty trying to share our food with them to try and save our lunch out and which was supposed to be a nice afternoon together. With a big garden and play area it had great potential as a very family friendly pub. Unfortunately the expensive and not very family friendly menu means that even if our lunch hadn't been ruined by our friends not being able to eat because of some sort of chaos going on being the scenes, it's not somewhere I would return to to with kids.On a positive note - the chicken salad and cheese platter we did manage to get were very tasty.

We both ordered our meals and waited when they arrived I had ordered stake and ale pie with mushroom's with mash and vegetables. Well the pie was soggy as though it had been microwaved the mash was ok but the vegetables look like frozen veg by Birdseye ? Even the gravy was lumpy. My Aunt had chicken with bacon and cheese with Chips and veg the chips where good but the chicken was dry and tough and again the veg look like the had come out of the freezer. Did not have desert jus coffee and that was fine but just a shame as seam's to have lost some of its sparkle with the food

The lady of the house welcomed us warmly when we arrived and looked after us very well the whole time were were there. The menu is varied with veggie food for those who want it and fish as well as meat - so partly British and partly Continental. We all had starters and main courses and the helpings were generous. Good ale on draft (my son and I had Doom Bar - very nice) and the house red wine was a very good Rioja at a reasonable price. This is a proper pub with nice ambiance but it deserves more customers. We were looking to have a roast on a Sunday and stopped by the Dukes Head as it always looks to busy.As we walked in the door the chef serving the carvery asked what we would like, we then asked for a table and were seated in a room with absolutely no atmosphere by the toilets. Our table was so wobbly that the drinks spilt every time we put them down.We were probably in the restaurant less than 30 minutes. The waitresses were all dressed as if they were going on a night out, honestly their clothes were unacceptable. The carvery: we stopped by about 1, I believe they serve from 12-3, the only meat left was pork, there were no Yorkshire puddings and no gravy, and a few vegetables left.We were given one slice, about half an inch thick of pork and 60% of it was fat, leaving a small piece of meat, whilst it was tasty it was no way worth £11.50 each. I wish we had gone with our gut feeling when we walked in and gone elsewhere. It was all very rushed with no personal service. My husband ordered a pint of Shere Drop, he couldn't drink as it was awful, that was left as well as my drink. We made a swift exit and will never return again.

We nipped in here for lunch as it is our nearest walkable pub. The pub was pretty quiet on arrival and we chose a seat near to the bar. The barman was very friendly and helpful - my husband likes spicy food and asked if the Thai curry could be made extra spicy. Although he did not want to mess with the recipe, he said he would ask the chef to make some peppers in chilli oil on the side which my husband could add to the curry if he wished. My husband was happy with that and I opted for the steak act mushroom pie with chips. The bar started to get busier at this point and it was a long time before our food arrived. Just before bringing it out the barman apologised that they had done a chicken and veg pie rather than beef and mushroom. I was pretty hungry by this point and didn't mind too much so agreed to have it. When it came however it was seven with mashed potatoes rather than the chips I had ordered. Again I decided to have it as my husbands curry had arrived and I didn't want to wait longer but it was disappointing as id been looking forward to chips! The barman was very apologetic but I think it would have been a good idea to get me a bowl of chips on the side free of charge then at least I would have something of what I ordered! Having said this, what I did have was nice and tasty and my husband enjoyed the curry with the additional peppers.

Went for a meal here and was surprised by how good it was! The menu had a good choice of classic food and slightly different things with a twist! Also sunday to wednesday (i think) is half price on beers between 5 and 6! So worth going then for a pint!!

We stopped off for dinner on our way back from a day at Chessington. Inside and out it has a lot of character. A spotlessly clean country pub with two bars, plenty of seating, and large gardens with a play area for the kids. We received a very warm friendly greeting on arrival, and I can definitely recommend the Hog's Back TEA for all you real ale drinkers!Unfortunately, this is where the positives ended for us. I ordered the chef's special as I liked the sound of it. The Pollock was cooked well, with a firm flaky texture and good flavour, but the potato rosti was so hard I could barely cut it, let alone eat it. The strange concoction of spinach, capers, raisins and pine nuts that accompanied it was also inedible. The rest of the meal was average, but at least edible.Such a shame as it looked so promising to start with. I will say in their defence that the young lady that served us was very apologetic and went the extra mile to make amends (hence the three star rating, rather than two).Would we return? Looking at some of the other reviews here, perhaps we caught the chef on a bad night, so we might give them a second chance if we are passing again.

Took all the family here for Sunday lunch back in September. A very enjoyable lunch - most of us having the carvery. The total bill including a couple of rounds of drinks was quite a nice surprise too. Well priced - and because of this, it gets quite busy too.

We had lunch here on a weekday. We were the only people eating - a few others came for a drink. We enjoyed the two-course lunch for £10 - soup of the day and dish of the day. Both were piping hot (so often food is served lukewarm nowadays). Very friendly service. It was a bit cold sitting in the main pub room so we retreated to the back of the restaurant. I don't usually like music forced on me but this was great 60s heavy stuff, which I enjoyed. I recommend.

I have travelled past this establishment for many years and never been in until now. Since it was a Sunday I booked a table in advance and is recommended. The staff were friendly, the temperature inside was just right and there was plenty of space to manoeuvre around. I thought the wine was a little expensive but about right for everything else. The carvery itself was fair and overall the food itself was not particularly hot. I mentioned this to the pub landlord who was very please for this feedback. The desert and coffee were excellent though. There was background music right up to date and this was a pleasure to hear rather than the drab sounds from the 80's that many pubs have on. (The 1980's music was good in its day but times have moved on.)

Four of us elderly ladies visited the Dukes Head for lunch on Friday last. When we arrived we were shown to a table, out the back. There was a radiator behind the table which wasn't on. It was very cold that day and when we asked the waitress if we could have the heating on, she replied that, it was on a timer and not due on again until the evening. This meant we had to sit in our coats to eat.The food was excellent, especially the apple and mincemeat crumble for dessert but the meal was spoilt by the surroundings being cold and unwelcoming.

Stopped off by chance to have Sunday lunch and were pleasantly surprised at the quality of the food and the nice surroundings. The pub decor is simple but clean and nice and the staff were very attentive. There was a vast selection of food on offer at the carvary and it was a reasonable price. Will definately be returning but will probably book this time so as not to disappoint!

Inflicting a large party of around 30 celebrating a significant birthday, always presents a challenge to a pub or restaurant but the Dukes Head coped admirably. Warm welcome, help offered with the set-up. Great room with access to the garden and critically important play area. The pub with new owners has been completely refurbished and is unrecognisable from its former less salubrious days, so ignore any really old reviews. The Sunday carvery was excellent, wide choice of meats, generously carved, backed by a huge variety of vegetables and pigs in blankets (a nice touch). Cooked to perfection not at all stodgy. Kept well topped-up even during the onslaught of our party. Choice of gravy as well. Desert choice was good, shame the sticky toffee's run out but plenty of alternatives nevertheless. If looking for any recommendations to improve, maybe a little more investment in the play area to give it a lick of paint and replace some of the older parts. Will certainly would be back for another Sunday roast with all the family.

We visited the Dukes head a couple of weeks ago for lunch on a Friday. The meal was excellent, a bit more up market than usual pub meals. There was a very good, limited, set lunch menu and a marvellous selection of vegetarian meals and good choice of a la carte too. There were five of us and everyone had an excellent lunch. The waitress was very pleasant and very helpful. There is a plus for us as it is very near and why go further afield when there is this class of lunch just down the road. We intend trying their Sunday Lunchtime buffet soon.

Went with my mum and dad for a meal last weekend, it was a nice cosy eating area, not a huge amount of tables, so I would book to guarantee a table. Friendly staff. A fairly simple pub menu, but really well cooked. We had the sharing platter to start which was all freshly cooked and tasty. All three of us chose the burgers for mains, I had the Cuban, cooked medium as I requested which was really tasty, and the chips were AMAZING! I'll be going back just for the chips alone and to try a few more things. For pudding I had crème brulee, which tasted really nice, but was a bit thin, would recommend them making it in a deep ramekin dish for it to be better value as it felt like a bit of a stingy portion. My parents live in Capel, so they're really happy to have a reliable pub restaurant just up the road. Would really recommend visiting.

Third time - still unlucky! I have written two previous reviews - both have disappeared - I wonder why? As a local, I would love to be able to walk to this 'local' and enjoy food and drink. But two previous visits have been appalling - poor service, average food, and not cheap. So today we went for the Sunday Carvery - as we had been told it was good. Not so. The six of us were shown to three 'single' tables pushed together, although bigger tables were available. every one of them was unstable and rocked from side to side. We got our own drinks as the waitress was busy. Our shoes stuck to the sticky floor. The tables were sticky. The waitress came to take our order, but gave us no menus. There was cutlery for five, not six. Cutlery was so cheap, the forks bent when pressure was applied. We went to the carvery and were served by a scruffy 'chef'. The food was of good quality - but not hot. We got our own drinks again. We didn't see the waitress again. Also - don't believe the prices on the web site (last updated June 2013) - they bear no resemblance to the actual costs - or the banner displayed outside the pub.A thoroughly revolting experience. Never again!

Great pub/Restaraunt with great decor and a good size play area and gardens out side for children. We go here on Sundays with friends and its never a disappointment. You eat when you want from the carvery and the food is topped up regularly. I can't wait for the summer as the outside space is a major advantage for family's as the safety factors are really good. Will prob visit this Sunday :0)

This is a real gem. Hot food served properly: a terrific menu and an amazing vegetarian menu. The new owners have worked really hard to build up a good reputation, and they have succeeded. I have eaten twice there recently, and it is not my local! The Cuban burger is a showstopper, but there are other lovely dishes. Last time I had Tilapia, not a fish you often see on a pub menu. My wife chose the fishcake for a main course: wow, they produced a fishcake larger than many! There is a good wine list; it is not extensive but full of carefully chosen wines. On both occasions there were plenty of other people enjoying a good lunch and they were really complimentary too. Cannot wait for Mother's Day!

Having had a somewhat mixed experience the first time we visited, the manager very kindly phoned to ask us over for a free meal. We gladly took him up on this as we wanted to support our local pub. Well, was I glad we did. All of our meals (6 in total) were very very good and no hiccoughs this time around. We all had starters, drinks and desserts, which we thought we would gladly be paying for but no,Malcolm the manager insisted that it was all on him not just the mains. The food is good quality, plenty of it and the staff are welcoming and friendly. We will be back!

Had nice steak meal served on a bit of plank (yes, I know this was trendy once) by delightful staff; the pepper sauce seemed to be gravy with a bit of pepper added and the Eton Mess consisted of fresh perfectly-whipped double cream and strawberries, complemented by... more double cream. Doesn't it usually have ice-cream as well?

Here we had a pub that was my local, but I had never visited due to its dreadful reputation. After a succession of different owners and a few periods lying empty, it re-opened, not as a traditional pub, but as a restaurant with a small bar. Having been impressed by the chef's other restaurant and having received some good reports from friends and neighbours, we decided to try it out a few weeks ago - and have been back several times since. The weekday evening menu is very good, with plenty of specials and one of the largest vegetarian menus I have ever seen. The Sunday lunch carvery is also excellent - the test, for me, is always the roast potatoes. Too often at carvery restaurants they end up as inedible rocks, but not at the Duke's Head - always crisp. They constantly offer to replenish the veg and are happy for you to serve yourself to as much as you like. The Duke's Head is very family friendly, with a large garden with a well equipped play area for the children. I would agree with some of the other reviewers that it isn't the cheapest place around, but I have to say that, for me, the quality has justified the price. Have been very impressed so far with the Duke's Head. I hope it continues to be a success and a pleasant place to visit, then I'll have a local that I actually want to go to!

I went here for a birthday doo a while ago. Lots of other people seem to like it in recent reviews, so maybe they were having an off day, but it wasn't a good experience for me.So pros: the ale was very good, pricey but good, elements of the decor OK and one of the bar staff was pretty welcomingThe cons: food was hideous, oily, badly presented and tepid. I went to a Wetherspoons in Horley the following evening and their £6.95 burger with a beer was culinary nectar by comparison. Of the party I was with orders were forgotten, turned up cold, staff were surly and indifferent. And it was horribly expensive ca £30/head excluding drinks. Price manageable for a really good meal, but this was a piss-take.And the moral - if you are going to decide to charge like a Gastro-Pub then you'd best have the quality to justify it - which the Dukes Head doesn't.

Decor pretty decent and modern with nice decking and garden.

We visited this restaurant while on holiday in nearby Ockley from Scotland. Was the best cod and chips in beer batter I've ever tasted. Then the Eton mess was just delightful. We decided to visit The Dukes Head as we live nearby and wanted to try the menu and see what it was like after its refurbishment, we were very disappointed, we have known this pub for 40 years, infact we got engaged there in the 1970s,it used to be a very cosy place with loads of charm and very olde-worldy, they have spoilt it as it looks quite modern now and does no justice to a property of its age, Food was average, staff ok but could do better,we will not be going back, such a shame they have missed an opportunity to really make something of it,

We have waited so long for a non-nutter to take over the Dukes Head. We have lived for many years in Beare Green without a well run pub/restaurant to be able to walk to. As some of the earlier reviews confirm, this establishment was run by a series of managers who had no idea how to run a pub, or a restaurant, or a 'hotel'. The only 'locals' that would go in there, were the ones that were in there every night - loud, deadbeat, permanently inebriated. Anyone 'new' walking in was treated with disdain by these 'locals' and largely ignored by the manager(s). Unless you drank in there 8 nights a week, you were unwelcome. So when the dump was re-furbished, we looked forward to a bright future of leisurely walks to the Dukes Head; a few drinks and a pleasant meal. The 'refurbishment' took a long time - hard to see why, as nothing much has changed. It doesn't look a lot different to how it looked 25 years ago - just brighter lights. The draught beer I ordered was 'off' on both visits we made - and rather than suggest an alternative, I was met with a blank, enquiry stare. And the food? Out of six of us eating - two starters were wrong; two main courses were wrong; one main course was cold; one sweet was forgotten. Question - how can a 'home made' pie have a questionable puff pastry cover and have the mark of the 'Brake Brothers' dish on the bottom? But it was soon after they re-opened, so we gave them another go.Wish we hadn't. Admittedly it was busy - something called Mothers Day? But a one hour wait for the starters (with no apology) and only getting the main course after some serious pushing, is not the way to treat customers. It became obvious from this visit, that a lot of the food is not 'home made', but cooked from frozen. And the locals? They are still there - woe betide anyone new who trespasses into their bar.And the new manager/owner? Scruffy, unkempt, bearded, out-of-touch. Get a shave and some 'smart casual' clothes - don't dress like the 'locals'! Will we go back - not until we hear better reports. What a shame!

Came in for lunch as it was the nearest place. I knew that the pub had been taken over and had Sunday lunch a few weeks ago, but did not know what to expect midweek. Nothing much in terms of custom until just before 1pm, but it picked up then with several tables in the restaurant occupied. Food quality was better than expected, decent pub food at a good price and hopefully they will build up the customer base that their efforts deserve,

We went for 'Breakfast with Santa." It was absolutely perfect. We had told the staff that we were unsure of how our 2 year old granddaughter might respond to Santa. The pub was decorated beautifully and they found us a table where she could observe from a distance. They provided us with little Christmas craft activities whilst we waited for our breakfasts. When our granddaughter felt brave enough to approach Santa, he was brilliant with her! He took her cues and met her exactly where she needed to be. We can't speak highly enough of the warmth, helpfulness and efficiency of the staff. This is a true family pub and we couldn't have wished for a better place for our granddaughter's first meeting with Father Christmas. Thank you, The Woodman and merry Christmas!

We were booked in for a birthday tea specially, even though they weren't doing teas that week. When we arrived a lovely big table with white tablecloth and napkins was ready for us. We were offered coffee and tea, which came promptly, followed by a plate of hot snacks and a cake stand containing a mouth-watering selection, including egg mayonnaise, coronation chicken and cheese and ham sandwiches. The bread was beautifully soft, with the crusts cut off. In addition were warm scones with jam and clotted cream, topped off by a selection of mini cakes. We were so full we had to take the cakes home! Thank you to Penny, who took such good care of us, and the other members of staff who made us feel very special.
