I went here with my family and it was a highly enjoyable meal with lovely staff. The food was tasty and good quality ,which of course is the key to a great eatery, yet it had an added bonus of a relaxed atmosphere in a convenient location. Overall, Burgundy and black is a great cafe full stop

What a delightful spot. Helpful service and a very very tasty breakfast. The Dorking sausage was cooked well and was full of flavour, should serve two. A very hot plate with good quality bacon and the largest most tasty mushroom.Free WiFi makes this a place I will come back to for sure, plus a well nice cappuccino.

This place looks ok (needs a spring clean) but the food is such a let down. All 4 of us left most of our breakfasts, and there was no care from the staff about the fact that we hadn't eaten it. £7 for 1 (tiny) piece of smoked salmon on (what tasted like powdered) scrambled eggs is outrageous. As is charging an additional £1 when I requested the egg with my breakfast to be scrambled not fried! Wont be returning.

I like to support the independent coffee shops when I can and this is definately one of the best, in a town that seems to be dominated by them. The staff are friendly and helpful and the coffee really good. There isn;t an awful lot of gluten free offerings but what they do have is excellent value for momey and very high quality - the brownies are to die for.

I do like this place, informal, clean, pleasant, delicious food and reasonable too. No pretensions either, whilst it isn't a greasy spoon it does sell good food and my sausage sandwich and coffee was delicious. My two children equally devoured their sausage sandwich and bacon sandwich with equal gusto.Definitely worth a visit..........

I visited Burgundy & Black in Dorking with my parents (who go there at least once a week). We sat at one of the outside tables, which was very pleasant. The coffee was delicious and the danish pastries were hot, having just come out of the oven. Matt and William were, as usual, very welcoming and always make time to stop chat. William has been known to help my Mum to her seat if he isn’t too busy - if he spots her coming up the road as she does have problems with mobility. It’s the little touches that make such a difference. Highly recommended !

The decor is tired but the food is fresh and well made. I went there with my boyfriend for a Sunday breakfast. The coffee was boiling hot and it took me ages to drink it all. The eggs (one poached, one scrambled) were nice and the break accompanying them was fresh.Looking around me I saw a lot of redundant stuff, and cleaning items just left in a corner near the kitchen. The sofas are old and ruined as well as the chairs and the tables. I think with a bit of TLC the place could look really nice!Staff are really friendly :)

It was a beautiful sunny day and we sat outside where thankfully, despite the ashtrays, there was nobody smoking. Why no non-smoking area outside? This is just off the High Street so easy to reach but quieter than in the main shopping area. You can see the hills and church but also the car park so not a bad view overall. The menu is mostly basic simple cafe grub - it's not a posh place at all. They have mainly sandwiches and cake but NO gluten free options in either of these. A poor show by today's standards. For gluten free you could have Jacket Potato or the All Day Breakfast - in other words extremely limited choice. However, there was a lot of salad leaves served with the potatoes, the prices are very reasonable and the service was friendly.

My daughter and I went here for lunch. It seemed like a nice place, with a pleasant situation and a lovely airy seeing area with lots of light from the big windows. The servers were attentive and quick. After this initial good impression I was a bit disappointed when the food arrived. My daughter had a gingerbread man which was plonked down in front of her, still in the plastic bag with no plate. My chicken, onion and cheese panini looked ok but tasted quite nasty, like burnt grease. After eating most of it, I turned the last piece around and was horrified to see that the whole bottom of the panini was covered in a stuck-on layer of old burnt grease (the kind you get when you don't clean the grill press). It made me feel pretty quesy. What was worse, was when I went to pay and saw the kitchen behind the till. It was pretty awful. Old grease on the equipment and mess and food lying all over the place. I really regretted eating that panini. Won't be going back there again.

There are some good things about this place, but my over-riding impression is that it is tired and dirty. The decor and vibe is good, kind of bistro ish but with a relaxed daytime feel so you can happily sit there for coffee. The menu is good, and most of the food served was okay except for the chips of which half were burned and half undercooked. Coffee is nice. But it’s dusty and grubby everywhere except for the actual tables (to be fair that’s better than dirty tables, but still). The teaspoons and saucers were dirty. Sauce bottle we were given was very grimy and empty. Floors seemed unswept. There is one filthy falling apart toilet that hasn’t seen a good clean in a long time. There were things left lying around that shouldn’t be in public view - mop, bucket and broom just sitting by the counter, a nearby table full of boxes of eggs and scattered paperwork, hoover just standing next to the baby change unit (which isn’t in a cubicle, but just outside the one toilet)with the plug on the baby mat. Pictures not attached to the wall, just leaning (again on the baby change unit - it fell on my baby’s head!). No nappy bin. The high chairs are dirty and the trays stored unfathomably on a shelf underneath the baby change - that’s right, right beneath where people handle poopy nappies - needless to say I didn’t use one. Apparently this place is a big meeting place for parents but it’s hard to see why when the baby facilities are quite disgusting.

I was passing through Dorking with my husband and 6 month old son - we needed a quick pit stop for coffee and to feed the baby and chose this independent place over the 'chain' coffee shop further up the precinct. The toilet was disgusting - I walked straight out. The baby changing facilities are in a small vestibule outside the revolting toilet so other people have to walk past to get to the loo. The baby changer was horrible. Covered in dirt and the worse thing was the pile of toys and books that were lying all over the floor and INSIDE the open bucket that served as a nappy bin. Absolutely horrified. One star simply for the nice tasting mince pie, which regrettably I ate before visiting the facilities.

We chanced to stop at the B and B cafe recently for a coffee and cake. We were tempted not to stay, once inside, due to the languishing odour of fried food and the general dirty appearance of the place. We tried to find a reasonable table away from the cooking area and where the floor and tables were clear of crumbs and crisps on the floor. A pleasant enough waitress took our coffee order, and on viewing the array of cakes, we declined, as none of them were under any form of covering. The coffee was good. The toilet was the next letdown, being scruffy to put it mildly, and the floor and skirting needed a scrubbing brush to it, appalling. Similar feedback to a previous review on here, depending on the managers mood, depends on the service you get. He can sometimes be friendly and chatty, other times he is moody and makes you feel like his doing you a favor! The food is "Hit & Miss" same goes for the waitresses taking the order, often taken incorrectly.I visited here recently and ordered jacket potatoes for my family with Tuna & Cheese, the waitress forgot to put cheese on the order, the manager plonked a lump of cold congealed cheese on the top, it tasted gone off,.I brought to the waitresses attention the managers replied it was because it was "Grated!" he was to busy chatting to his friends to look any further. All the cheese was put aside when the waitress came to clear the table I asked her to taste it to see for herself, she said she didn't know what "gone off" cheese should taste off!Despite paying extra £3 for gone off cheese, no customer service was shown. Most of our family visit here several times a month, unfortunately there has been 1 to many poor experiences, will now look at the various other options that Dorking has to offer in the future. Real shame,as outcome could have been different with the right customer service shown, he clearly knew we were unhappy, he could see all the cheese had been take off our plates and placed aside,a few words would have made the difference between losing our custom and not.

Whilst there is little atmosphere inside, outside there is a nice terrace with views overlooking the hills. The setting is peaceful. The service was good - and friendly. The coffee is perfectly acceptable and the food too, except that it is a little on the pricy side.If it were not for the outside seating I probably would not go there as Dorking is blessed with many other independent coffee shops.

I was greatly surprised at the quality of my dinner! It was a beautiful presentation, the fish was perfectly cooked and the combination of grilled red onions and butter bean bed was delicious! The salad was fresh, generous and a welcome change to iceberg lettuce!

really friendly owner, and the waitress is lovely.....but we had a flat white and a danish.. we had to wait over twenty minutes for the danish..by which time our coffee had been served. The danish were so hot and not cooked properly .. not nice at all, and the flat whites were not flat whites at all. Basic cup, coffee weak, and the steamed milk on the top was thin burnt and just bubbly..not how good coffee should be.To top it all, the loo was dirty...no other word for it. A good bit of cleaning both in cafe and in loo, and up the game on the coffee! Great people...but there is so much choice in Dorking.

A large group of us attending a wedding at the vineyard visited for breakfast two days running. We all ordered full English and I thought it was superb! Particular highlights were the quality sausages and the big chunky toast. The owner was great and made us feel really welcome despite having to wait on, cook, serve, clean and operate the till pretty much by himself. He looked very stressed this morning but managed everything with aplomb and delivered another brilliant brekkie!

A lot depends on the mood of the manager. Some days he is really happy and service is superb. Some days not so and his grumpiness seems to infect everyone. Weirdly, he's more likely to be grumpy when he has a lot of customers (I say weirdly, as I think he is the owner too). Coffee is good, without being anything special. Cakes are very good, but maybe a little expensive. Other food options I've tried tend to be good, but a bit expensive. When the sun is shining, sitting on the terrace watching the world go by is one of life's pleasures and all gets forgiven. It's not a chain and that is both good and bad - quirky and a bit of a rollercoaster ride on service, but at least authentic.

I make a point of coming here when in Dorking - exceptional, homely, locally sourced food at a reasonable price. You also don't get the feeling they're desperate to get you out of the door like some of the bigger chains.I wouldn't hesitate to recommend.

Having been to the cafe quite a few times, I am getting used to the surly inefficient staff but it is increasingly unwelcoming-especially if you happen to have a baby with you (and a quiet one at that). I will not be going back to be snarled at while waiting for someone to bring me overpriced food and drinks.

It's an odd place with a strange atmosphere. To be honest, there are a couple of great coffee places in Dorking, so why you'd want to visit this place, I don't know.

First time here. Place seemed a little chaotic and noisy with children and people liking the sound of their own voices. We both ordered the full English which arrived eventually. The bacon was flabby, the sausage was flabby, the mushroom wasn't really cooked properly but left the plate swimming in watery fluid once it had been cut. Beans fine, egg okay, toast okay. I suspect the breakfast may have been better had they not had to deal with a few customers at once.Coffee was brilliant though. The staff looked flustered behind the counter and the man looked like he really cared about people waiting too long but the waitress and another member were totally devoid of any personality. I was inclined to mark this as a 1 out of 5 but gave it a 2 because I think the man (manager?) did care and the coffee was great. We are not local so it matters not to us, but there is a serious dearth of eating places in Dorking if anyone wants to open up something decent. The best thing about visiting Dorking was the butterscotch tart (delicious) and the lemon meringue FROM THE BAKERS IN THE HIGH STREET!

Awful service - my first and last visit to this place. Walked in to make order and was told to take a seat they would come to take our order. Then proceeded to serve other customers who came in behind us (a large group) who went to the counter so while we were sitting waiting to order drinks other people were ordering and taking their drinks to their tables. Walked out- won't be back. Perhaps they are unfamiliar with queueing seems like first come = last served

I used to come here a lot with my NCT group when our first borns were babes in arms, it's a big cafe so was handy for bring prams in, that was over three years ago.I came back two weekends ago on a Sunday with husband and our 3 and 1 year old children. I saw there was a sign up saying "no buggies"... I don't blame the owner really. Anyway, we took a seat and a miserable looking waitress came over and took our orders, totally expressionless face,I really felt like it was too much for her to write down a few words and take it to the kitchen.Having said that, I was really impressed with my sandwich, a "not the run of the mill" filling which was delicious and fabulous granary bread. I get fed up with eateries serving up boring sliced loaf and this place defiantly doesn't. My husband also was very impressed with his ploughmans but it was lacking gherkins and pickles.

Was in Dorking and needed a good cooked breakfast. Usually I go to the Tanhouse in Newdigate so the bar was set pretty high. On entering the surly waitress gave me a menu, no smile at all. I ordered the all day breakfast which came pretty quickly (but the cafe was pretty empty). The food was poor to say the least. Everything was swimming in baked beans, the fried egg was barely cooked and there was no butter for the toast. It's not often I can't finish a fried breakfast due to the quality but this one such occasion. If you are in Dorking, I'd give this place a miss. Poor food, surly staff, not particularly cheap and generally not very welcoming.

On of the worst coffee shop in Dorking. Food is overpriced for what you get. The salad on our plate was on the point of getting off. Second the waitress was horrible. Especially to my wife and family in law. As they are from Asian background it felt as racial discrimination. They never felt so uncomfortable in a coffee shop in the UK. We left this place quite up sad. Next time in Dorking I defiantly avoid Burgundy & Black!!!

Why is the staff always so grumpy at Burgundy & Black?? Service is rubbish, takes ages to order anything, the waitress is an expert on ignoring the customers. I've been there a few times and it's always the same. The food isn't great either, the pork pate looks exactly like dog food and tastes awful. The place has so much potential but currently it's a big disappointment.

Really nice coffee shop. Fpubd it by chance while walking in town. First time in Dorking and thought everything would be a big chain coffew shop or restaurant, so this was a great find. I ordered a greek salad for £5 and a diet soft drink for £1 which would never happen in london unless it's a salad that comes in a small plastic tub, and I got served a nice fresh salad on a proper plate with balsamic dressing as decoration and a very good sliceof ggranary bread. Think I am going for coffee and cake to finish it off. I am sure they are as delicious. Its good to find an independent coffew shop! !

I was looking for somewhere to have lunch, and thought I would try this place out.I was glad I went in as the service was good and the food excellent.I had one of the specials for lunch along with a latte and thoroughly enjoyed both. The special was very tasty and well made the the coffee was good too.I would definitely say give this place a try.My only criticism (and it's being picky) was that the chair was uncomfortable, but that's pretty minor.

Just had a bottle of Prosecco for very reasonable £12.95, and two great Paninis. Chorizo, Mozzarella and sweet chilli sauce panini was particularly tasty. Lovely quiet setting outside in the sun. Prompt, polite service but then not busy today. Will come back next time in Dorking.
