A pub that looks big from the outside but which is cosy and small inside with two small bars and a selection of regulars having a quiet drink. This is a proper pub offering a menu which is above the basics that you’d expect and with friendly staff. The weather had suddenly turned from late summer to autumn and so the steak and ale pie and chicken and leek pie were the chosen main courses and really very good too. In fact I’d suggest that they were some of the best pies I’ve had when it comes to being full of meat and not having soggy pastry, full pies too, not this casserole with a puff pastry top malarkey. Definitely worth stopping in here for a hearty meal and good ales from Daleside and Rudgate brewery were most welcome accompaniments.

We have stayed in nearby Fryup several times but never ventured into local pubs as our children were too young. We rang today on the off-chance that there would be a table for dinner after our day out and were in luck! The food was great (especially the pies and bread and butter pud!). Service was friendly and chatty and the local beer went down a treat! Would warmly recommend and hope to return on our next trip!

Ordered a pint of the local bitter and it was really smooth and refreshing. Liked it so much I drank it very quickly and ordered another! Had the fish and chips, and my wife had the scampi. The fish tasted fresh and the batter was the right blend of oily and crispy. The scampi portion was generous. They both came with chips and some vegetables (to keep us healthy ha ha). I had the chocolate cake for dessert and that was definitely homemade and melt in your mouth. The staff were very welcoming and happy to serve.

I stayed here one night whilst walking through the area. Despite the Covid restrictions, the reception was welcoming and I was soon in my room. Perfectly functional for one night, with all the usual extras. The bath was very welcome after a long day's walking.I did not eat in the restaurant but watched England i the Euros instead. An excellent, quiet night's sleep. The breakfast was well presented and cooked. All the staff seemed friendly ad efficient. Would certainly stay again.

We've enjoyed our stays at The Duke of Wellington in Danby, North Yorkshire since 2006. But our forth visit will be our last. The excellent food remains, but the warm welcome and comfortable accommodation seems to have disappeared since our last visit in 2010. We arrived at 4:40pm, in accordance with the published check in time, and found the entrance door was locked and had to phone the owner to tell him we had arrived - only to be moaned at by the grumpy owner, after our long journey, who gave the impression that paying customers were an inconvenience. The mattress on our bed was hard, bowed in the middle and sagged at the outer edges (doubtless worn out through years of use), with the result it felt like sleeping on an incline, which gave the impression one was about to fall out of bed. So no restful sleep - but back ache and sciatica in the morning. When we brought this to the attention of the owner, later in the afternoon, we were treated like naughty children who should have told him sooner and received a lecture that "a Hotel Inspector had visited only last week and he thought the mattress was hard but fine etc." He should have tried sleeping on it! Because we hadn't brought it to the owners attention earlier, and after more debate, he reluctantly re-made the bed with an extra blanket and mattress topper to try and make things more comfortable with out changing the mattress, without much success. So yet another sleepless night and sciatica and backache in the morning. Due to poor attitude, abrasive "customer service" and downright discomfort we checked out a day earlier than booked - never to return again. We'll be giving The Fox and Hounds in Ainthorpe a try and avoid the Duke of Wellington in future.

Friendly, cosy and perfectly located. Stayed overnight and had a meal. Couldn't be better placed for walking and cycling. The bar has a real fire and, along with the friendly staff, made it feel very homely. A great range of whiskies were on offer too. The accommodation area is gorgeous - the building is historial and full of character. The room was fairly small and not elaborate but just what you need on a walking/cycling break. Also dog-friendly. The meal was very good. There was lots of choice on the menu and the portions were generous. Not gourmet dining but good pub food. Definitely not a meal to dress up for - outdoor, casual wear at dinner was perfect.

What a lovely pub! We ( a group of 14 walkers ) dropped in for lunch the other day. We were welcomed by Charlie and sat down in a very comfortable bar with a warm fire to eat our pies and sandwiches purchased from the Danby Bakery round the back ... another excellent feature of Danby! Some members of the party were reluctant to leave ... it was just too nice to rush!

We booked a table here a couple of days prior to visiting the area - we thought it prudent in view of some earlier reviews. The Duke of Wellington is a smart, quaint old pub in a lovely relaxed village setting and staff we met were friendly, welcoming and very attentive - nothing was too much trouble, very helpful indeed. The menu is quite varied and very competitively priced - and the food, both main course and dessert - we found really top drawer, most excellent, We highly recommend a visit here - the location, the friendliness of the staff, and above all the quality of the food make it a must.

Called into the Duke of Wellington for an evening meal whilst staying at a cottage in Danby, also a good choice of wines and beers. We ordered two meals, haddock in a beer batter with chips and homemade steak pie with new potatoes. The food is reasonably priced (£9.99 for each meal we ordered) and the food came out in after a short wait, freshly cooked vegetables were brought out separately in a serving dish. The food is of an excellent quality and all home cooked, obviously by someone in the kitchen who has brilliant catering skills.

We have been coming here regularly over the past year since buying a property in the local area and have never been disappointed. The traditional pub food here is freshly cooked and piping hot with decent chips and fresh vegetables. The pie is excellent and served with additional gravy. It is best to book. The owner doesn't overbook so you know you will always be served promptly. The staff are very well trained and make sure you have the required accompaniments before your meal is served. There is a choice of wines and they are properly chilled. The Daleside bitter is very good.

My wife and I booked a one night stay and a meal here at quite short notice as it looked a good base to explore the area on our motorbikes. On arrival we parked our bikes on the small parking area immediately to the front of the pub and were welcomed by the barman who showed us to our room. What a nice surprise to find such a lovely large room with what looked like a very recently fitted modern en-suit with a massive shower. Both the room and bathroom were immaculately clean and our only minor disappointment was that the bed was just a standard double when the room was so big. In the evening we sat at a table next to a roaring fire in the main bar and ate our way through 3 courses of food prepared by someone who certainly knows how to cook! food was hearty and delicious and served piping hot on very hot plates.Breakfast was as equally as nice as the previous evening's dinner with a large choice, we opted for 1 full English and 1 smoked salmon and scrambled eggs which were all cooked to order.A great stay and we will be back

We arrived here desperate for something to eat on a Sunday night. We spent a good five minutes very obviously looking at the menu on the blackboard before the member of the staff told us that they were fully booked. We found this hard to believe as the place was totally empty and got the impression he just couldn't be bothered. As soon as we entered the front door we felt unwelcome. This was in complete contrast to anywhere else we have been to during our visit to Yorkshire

The Duke of Wellington Inn sits in the small village of Danby. At a push, three cars can park right outside but some people park on the verge opposite. There is a small car park within sight of the Inn, at the village hall - which is a better bet probably. We could only sup a drink or two with family members because the Inn does not serve food at lunch-time, only in the evening. It is a dog friendly Inn .... it is a lovely looking place, with lots of character and it would be good to revisit Danby and pop in again.

My family and family friends, a fairly large group, whom have frequented this pub many times over the last 50 or so years were saddened to come up against a jobs worth.A person who I have known for 30 years and to be turned away with 20 minutes still to go to the end of serving on a very quiet day in March 2014.We had already purchased approximately £50 in drinks from the bar and then we were refused. My family and friends were amazed at this rigid attitude and un-friendly manner especially when there was still at least 20 minutes until we had been informed of closing. On this day this pub lost approximately £150 in bar takings. The Downe Arms pub in Castleton were very inviting where we spent a good couple of hours reminiscing on our recent sad loss. This was not a rowdy crowd. The people present were business people, engineers, school teachers, students and several retired. This once good pub will no doubt be off many of our lists and several dozens of people from the local community too...David Marshall Name and address Supplied

We had the unfortunate "luck" of spending a night at this place. Got a "suite" under the creaky flooring of the pub with noise-channelling ventilation ducts overhead, a substandard kitchen with no cupboards and wobbly table, a toilet with no ventilation, exposed pipes and disjointed faucet and a door with no handle in sight... All this came with a delayed check-in and service that leaves much to hope for. While the rooms above the pub may make for a better night's sleep, there is little hope that could improve this establishment's culture of hospitality.
