Being in Cornwall and my wife is an avid royal fan we had to visit. Great Nursery with a wide variety of plants, shrubs and flowers. Spent about 30 minutes walking around. There are also some great views over the Cornish countryside. The Nursery also has a good shop which caters for many tastes, fromm books to homeware. Having walked around here we then went for Coffee. Managed to find a table in Orangery. We are not used to the counter service, but once discovered the Staff were extremely helpful. Our coffee and cake was delivered speedily by a friendly waitron. We really enjoyed our hour visit as this is not like Nurseries near our home.

Met up with friends for relaxed lunch. Decent choices, both venison sausages and salmon were particularly good. Nice range of puddings too. Wine fairly priced, staff are helpful and friendly. All in all a very good location. Very narrow lane into the car park from the main road, beware of oncoming traffic!

Treated ourselves to Dutchy breakfast, get service excellent produce cooked to perfection. Delightful ambuance about the cafe and Orangary, warmed by a roaring log burner. We could not fault the meal or experience. On leaving we visited the garden centre , the plant displays were excellent, and Anne plant manager was more than happy to dispense first class knowledge and advice. We highly recommend you visit, they do breakfast, Sunday lunches and high teas. The cafe was busy I would strongly recommend prebooking to avoid disappointment.

Great food, very fresh, we all enjoyed it. However, I have never felt so unwelcome. We were sat quickly but it took ages for someone to come and take our order, they were too interested in chatting. When someone did come over she wasn’t very friendly (slightly older than the rest, dark hair in a bun). Someone brought a coffee over very quickly and the food was brought not too long after. I asked where to pay when we had finished and the girl said on exit, the girl was seating someone so I waited. When she came back from seating them, the server we had then butted in and ignored me standing waiting to pay. I said can I pay and she sighed and again wasn’t friendly and I would go so far as to say very unprofessional. Service really let the food team down and scoring as an overall experience I can’t score any higher. A very uncomfortable experience.

A completely lacklustre visit which was partly due to the complete lack of engagement by the staff and partly due to inedible roast beef. No greeting from the staff on arrival. Once seated there was a fair wait to order and then for our food to arrive. My roast beef was as tough as old boots and the knife couldn't cut through it. There was no check back as to whether our meals were ok. On eventually clearing the table there was no enquiry as to had we enjoyed our meals. On paying yet again there was no interest whatsoever in customer satisfaction and no engagement from the staff. This was a return visit as our previous experience had been a delight with attentive staff and beautiful food. At least our dog was happy as she got to chew her way through the tough beef as I took it home rather than waste it. The Duchy isn't cheap and we won't risk a return visit.

Visited Restormel castle + took the 40min woodland walk to nursery. Upon entry, a sign indicates to access terrace cafe with our dog via the shop avoiding restaurant, fair enough, after a delicious lunch we exited via the shop and as I’m sure they would like we had a browse. I was approached by a polite but officious staff member saying dogs weren’t allowed in the shop. I mentioned we’d eaten + we’re on our way out but browsing. I was told we could exit via shop but could not shop with dog. We duly didn’t shop. The sign is ambiguous it doesn’t say dogs not allowed in the shop,it says access terrace cafe via shop. I mean it’s Cornwall + why dogs aren’t allowed in all areas including restaurant I don’t understand. Our time in France last year showed they welcome wet paws into the finest of restaurants, often with a blanket + water bowl.

Came back here again while in the area. Met friends for breakfast and was delicious as expected. Popped back another day for cream tea - again great value. Served in Cornishware pottery (of course). It does get very busy and they don't take reservations in the cafe so expect to wait at busy times. It is also a noisy bustling atmosphere. We were early so got the best breakfast while it was still quiet. Would have liked a savoury snack choice after 3pm as they stop serving lunch menu and it's just the cakes / tea selection. Good value and the coffee is excellent. Would recommend 5* and will be back next time int be area.

We had a fabulous meal here last week in the cafe . Children’s menu was great , they loved it all ! I had the smoked mackerel croque monsieur which was absolutely delicious and husband had fish which he said was amazing ! We came to meet friends last week. The food was lovely but expensive for what you got. I had the pork and it was a small piece with half a jacket spud and cold cabbage for £17. My hubby had the market fish of the day, it was battered (which it didn’t advertise) and no one told him what it was. It came with no potatoe based sides and just a mint puree. My son had the children’s sausage and chips he enjoyed it but it was 1 sausage and a handful of chips for £8. Everything we had was lovely and cooked well I just felt it was expensive for a garden centre and what you actually got.

Had a light Lunch and a wander around the stunning gardens. Easy free parking near front door. The Restaurant was busy but we were seated indoors immediately. Staff tho busy were friendly and efficient. Decor is very attractive. Our Lunches arrived quickly and were excellent. Diverse Menu and good pricing. As foreigners our only surprise was dogs at table. There were a couple of brief skirmishes between 3 different 4 legged patrons which made me think that at least children don’t attack other children when out dining. I wasn’t impressed with lady opposite who had one of the protagonists, small fortunately, but it had bedding spread out on floor and a water bowl which to my horror the owner thrust at a busy Waitress passing by and asked her to fill bowl for Grumpy. Twice. Poor woman did refill and return it but I think this is not an hygienic practice and dog owners must look after their pets themselves if they take them out. The Shop had interesting stock across several departments. Good to see men well catered for. Pricing good. Staff helpful. The Gardens and Nursery are wonderful. Such beautiful, healthy plants across a broad spectrum and the array of Garden Statuary, pots and furniture was outstanding. All prices good. A lovely place to visit.

We came across this nursery, shop and café by accident on a gloriously sunny morning and so chose to sit outside. The range of plants was extensive but, I have to admit, we were focusing on the café. The cakes looked scrumptious so it was hard to choose. The cappuccino was delicious and scones excellent, all served by polite, friendly staff. I loved this place, from the car park to the toilets! It's a treat to see the detail of good design, and experience service as it should be.

I have heard very positive feedback about this cafe so was really keen to visit. I was not disappointed with the tea and cakes which were very well presented and tasted delicious. However very mixed reviews about staff. Waited at the till to be seated and told by a young female assistant she would seat customer's in front of us then return. However when she returned she tried ( not very well) to explain she would need to ask if we could sit in the Orangery as it was busy in the cafe area. Before doing this she abruptly said “ look I have to seat these people behind you they have been waiting” and proceeded to escort a group to their table. Her manner was so incredibly rude I was lost for words (doesn’t happen often!) . When returning she escorted us to a table and left. I have to say the lady in the Orangery who served us was very polite and turned what started out badly into a positive experience. I felt based on my own experience customer care varies in this cafe and that particular young lady needs further training on how to manage customers.

Worst afternoon tea… stay away…rude staff… We booked two weeks before our date to dine, sent an email about allergens, they called us to check our timing etc and food choices few days before, repeated back to us our allergies while they were noting it, but on the day we are still served the wrong food. My son got nut allergy and served food with pistachio on it. When we questioned why we are served the wrong food, they responded rudely as implying it was my fault and I did not tell them about th nut allergy. No pork eaters got a half a boiled egg for scotch egg replacement. Because of nut allergy mixup they served the food and hour late without an apology. Thry removed the nut containing items and they did not replace them with other items. In the menu it says scotch egg part of an afternoon tea, they served a half of a scoth egg per person. The staff are very rude, they gang on customers, they talk in-front of customers about customers. Manager listened to us and he was very apologetic but did nothing about it.

It’s a shame as I always attend the duchy with family or friends for breakfast or lunch. I usually sit in the orangery however this time our table was sat in the cafe. The staff got our drinks order wrong and then when I went to pay the bill I got looked up and down and asked if I was going to pay for it as the member of staff couldn’t grasp the concept of a young lady paying for lunch. She got all excited and started saying loudly to her colleague/manager that I was paying and then got told to calm down and I then dealt with the colleague/manager. This wasn’t ideal in the slightest as it was suppose to be done quietly without my group knowing🤦🏼♀️ Normally I have nothing bad to say about the duchy as the staff have been wonderful and the food is always great, unfortunately yesterday tarred it with a brush it didn’t need. Such a disappointment as I’m a regular customer who enjoys coming to have food there.

What a super place to eat. The staff were friendly and abundant. The menu is not huge but we have never been disappointed. Today we had the fish chowder which was excellent value and rivalled the chowder served at the Crab House in San Francisco. We had a chardonnay wine which again was superb and very reasonable and a local Cornish Orchards cider. The bill was around £45 for the two of us which was very reasonable for such a lovely meal. The place was busy but no screaming kids or loud hen parties...just quiet group. Picked up some lovely orchids after the meal

We had not been to the new Orangery before but often to the cafe. We booked and drove from Shaftesbury Dorset for lunch and it was our Wedding Anniversary. We were absolutely delighted with the few hours we spent at the Duchy. Our day was made more special by three lovely girls, Amanda, Ruby and Leah who could not do enough. We had fun and laughter with them and this is important because personal engagement goes a long way to make guests feel welcome which we certainly did. We had a lovely lovely time and wish to thank them for making us feel special. Helping me out to the car with a large dog bed too. The food !! It’s sublime! Fresh, hot and delicious. We have always had great food and service whilst visiting the Restaurant over the last 5 years. Since the renovations and addition of the Orangery we were disappointed with the choices on the menu and the prices. £11 for a Croque Monsieur and a bit of side salad is extortionate, let alone 2 small bowls of French fries at £5 each for which we had to remind the staff we had ordered but not received. I'm not sure if there is a new chef but the quality and choice of food previously was of a much higher standard. The acoustic in the Restaurant was also dreadful, there was background music but all you could hear was a constant buzz of the bass and after 2hrs was tiresome. It was always a treat to visit but in future, I'll think twice before parting with my money.

I can’t say the improvements enhanced our visit. This was a birthday treat from my family and I enjoyed their company. As feeling hungry I went for the big bowl of chowder. It was a big bowl but a small portion in it. I felt it was small portions for the large price was not value for money. I have a small appetite but still felt hungry after this small Dutch portion also It was not hot. Service slow had to keep asking for service, main dish, cakes and for drinks. We were patient but we could of been left without ordering had we not asked for service. I wouldn’t return in a hurry and especially not for a birthday treat. Different staff taking orders didn’t give continuity of service.

Terrific extension. Very classy Orangery the shop and goods are fantastic. Range and quality of goods outstanding. Ditto the prices. Only for those with very very deep pockets. We visited for breakfast but after seeing the prices - £4 just for toast - we just...

Wanted drinks and light bites, suggested to go to woodland terrace, the orangery lady didn't seem to be interested in our business. Suggested we went there and came back if it wasn't what we wanted. 3 people in the queue and it took over 30...

A lovely setting, delightful staff and good food. Only reason four not five stars was that the service was quite slow, however this could be viewed as a pleasantly unhurried experience. Well worth booking in advance.

A lovely meal which was otherwise spoiled by the realisation that the Duchy Nursery is supporting a local property developer by offering Gillyflower Farm produce on their menu. The Duchy should realise that ethical behaviour is about more than just sourcing local ingredients. Gillyflower ‘Farm’...

Congratulations on the new Orangery Restaurant, brilliant design, and accommodating. However the food needs serious attention. I asked the waitress who took the order if the lamb was lean and without fat, yes, of course she replied, when it came it was very fatty and grislily,...

Used to be much nicer than it was today. The cafe struggled to accommodate a minor dietary requirement and the order was wrong. The croquet monsieur was delicious as were the skinny chips but the fish dishes in a bun had a really rich tartare...

We ate at the newly opened Orangery. I wasn’t expecting it be terribly good. The food in the cafe has noticeably gone downhill as this place has over expanded to meet demand from well heeled customers who seemingly didn’t really care what the food was...

I have to admit that I am not the person that comments on anything and everything, nor do I ever right a review of my experience. If I am unsatisfied with the experience, I just won't return again. But ... I have been seeing the Development of this establishment for that past 20 years and treated myself quite often to a night or two in any of the corner or best suites ( highly recommend those ) and enjoyed the ambiance and service this hotel had to offer. Our experience: Arrival to the hotel : We planned to have drinks prior to our meal. Found the bar area as busy as usual. With no free seats in sight, I ask the Brasserie manager if we could order drinks in the main lounge, whereas we been told that there normally is service but he has no clue what they doing today. Not answer I was hoping for. The entrance to the main lounge also been blocked off for some reason. Luckily the wait at bar was sufficient enough to pass the time for a table to become vacant. In previous visits, a relaxed table service was offered but not this time for some reason . Guess it’s an informal 5 star service.. , had to ask for bar menus as neither been on the bar or tables to see what’s on offer. ( also no usual complimentary nuts that used to be offered ) Restaurant We arrived early to our Booking at the samphire and were delighted to be able to be seated, unfortunately without any menus. It took about 10-15 min of us staring holes into the warm air, when I lost my patients and had to get up from the table to ask for menus at the entrance of the Restaurant. Yet again it took quite a while for us to order drinks and food as it seemed to be a chaotic service with everyone doing everything and no restaurant Manager nor head waiter in sight ( please note.. all evening ) . The lack of attention to detail was incredible .. table settings with knives to left and forks to right on every table .. just wow - giggle Food and drinks order done. ( ordered a glass of white wine with my mains, which never arrived ).. Drinks arrived what seamed ages. Overheard table next to us complaining about the slow service too, which been given a small apology but no solution to increase the speed of service ( yet again a lack of management ) Noticed the young waiter being unfamiliar on how to correctly present a bottle of wine and opening it, which I thought should be a training standard for a 5 star establishment. not only did he seem untrained, he also dried his hands in a used napkin left on the table next to him where diners just left. The pork belly starter , was below luke warm which was shame as its been rather tasty. I guess if a portion of this size is sitting on a kitchen pass for mere 3 min, it naturally will loose its core temperature, suggestion.. Next time use a cloche! I wanted to point this out to the service but yet again no manager or headwaiter to be seen and the waiters seem too busy to be bothered. Once they did ask if everything is alright, but by that time we finished what we had on the plate ( which is not a lot if you are hungry ) Unfortunately the main course of the hen and the monk fish not been any better and yet again being luke warm. Dessert of the frangipane tart and pineapple been ok, but yet again no attention to detail, as the dessert been bought out without cutlery being replenished prior. Ordered coffee to be served in the lounge, which arrived with no sugar or spoon and had to be asked for separately. When I paid my bill, I mentioned that the wine I ordered with my main course never arrived. No apology was offered.. A "informal fine Dining " experience. 95% informal - 5 % fine Dining. :-( Over the past 20 years I always chose the Headland hotel for its perfection, attention to detail and impeccable service, this time it's not delivered to its promise which is a shame cause that's what I will remember.. Coming from a 4 to a 5 star .. I expected more ( go back to 4 stars !!! You been better then

Last meal.of our holiday. What a load of rubbish!! Freshly cooked fish and chips were stone cold 5 mins after collection, greasy batter, chips abysmal, possibly the worst fish and chips ever!!! And so expensive 😫 I certainly advise everyone to avoid the place
