Drake's Fish & Chip Restaurant in Torbay

Have used this fish and chip shop for years and even drive 5 miles out of my way to go there however on my last 3 visits the quality has been very poor, The chips are very dry when usually they have been very good. I would understand if the chips had been sat there awhile but on 2 occasions the shop was very busy. Sadly I will have to find somewhere else to buy my chips from now on.

£18 for two small fish and chips and two stale bread rolls Batter barely cooked and fish tasteless. Only chips were fit to eat. If it had been my choice would have taken them back. Partner didn't buy a drink as they were overpriced too. Hard to eat a stale roll without a drink! Really disappointed.

Thought we'd give it a try prior to Babbacombe Theatre Show. Had Small fish and chips. Batter very pale soggy. Not much fish even for a small portion. Chips were OK. Tables very sticky to the touch. Would we visit again- a resounding NO.

Had their cod & chips for lunch. Portion was so big I couldn't eat anything for the rest of the day !!

We sat in and had fish n chips, the staff were lovely and the fish was beautiful, batter nice and crisp not to heavy, lovely meal, would recommend it to anyone.

I ve always found Drakes better than their local competitor Hanburys , however I was very disappointed yesterday with my meal. The cod was lovely I have to admit , worth the 20 min wait. The chips were a different story with well over half of them the scrag ends , small and hard . This put me off returning tbh !!!!

Tried Drakes for a change (normally go around the corner) and it was OK. Whilst they cooked my haddock (7/8 minute wait) my chips were cold which was disappointing particularly having waited for them fish to be fried - it's a basic thing but really annoyed when I found out on arriving home.

As locals we visit here regularly. The fish and chips are cooked perfectly. The special offers during the week is really appreciated especially these days. Really great quality.

Always lovely fish & chips and I always ask for the fish to be lightly battered which they do. Not at all greasy and the tastiest potatoes used for the chips

We had dinner in the restaurant part at the back. We we're the only one's eating in but I Don't know why as the food and service was excellent. I would recommend.👍

Food was nice, fortunately got there when it opened. Price what you would expect for a seaside resort. Venue is a bit dated, but you are not looking to buy the place. Service was the only grumble, the young lady kept forgetting to bring the extras. Had to remind her 3 times.

One of our favorite chippies in Torbay, situated on the main road between Torquay and Babbacombe, you might get a parking space outside, if not there is a council car park around the corner. This locally owned chippy has a seating / eating in area in the back, is always consistent with their food quality and service. Great £5.50 daily deals with a different offer every day.

Been to Drake's quite a few times this time. Fish-and-chips were not good at all.

This is a beautiful fish and chip shop and I really can't complain about the food, which was very nice and full of flavour... This is definitely one of my favourite fish and chip shops out of the many I've been to! I will definitely come again!

Katie was the most superb worker!! Very fast, very efficient and a very lovely girl. Her ability to scoop chips was like no other!! Very good would recommend

Very friendly staff, quick service. Freshly cooked food which was incredibly tasty and well packaged. A short walk from the benches overlooking the bay which was a lovely place to enjoy this delicious food.

Traditional chippie. Got the fish chips and mushy peas. Great portions could easily have fed two people. Enjoyed eating food parked up overlooking Babbacombe cliffs. Perfect views for perfect fish and chips.

We were down on holiday and looking for somewhere to have some real fresh fish 'n' chips. Great little place, when we came out there was a big queue so we were not the only ones that like Drakes fish & chips.

In my experience, Drakes is the best Fish and Chips in Torquay. It’s where the Locals go, not just the Holiday makers.

Lovely quiet place to eat , the food was amazing and some of the best chips we have tasted. Over the family we sampled a burger, fishcakes , and pies all of which were delicious. The staff were really friendly and made us feel really welcome and their service was very quick. There is also the option to take food out or eat in and if you eat in there is access to toilets.

I ordered batter sausage and chips,I t was like a child's portion, I counted the the chips I had twenty! Very small portions for the price after waiting 15 minutes .

Disappointing. Waited 7 mins as cook to order which was fine. Chips were soggy, small & stuck together, small, similar to what you’d get in a kebab shop at 3am. Fish was average pretty tasteless. Swung by on a Sunday evening 645pm, was so looking forward to a good feed. No pride in what they are offering.

Excellent haddock and chips and good sized portions. Scampi was lovely too. A proper, traditional sit-in chip shop with very friendly service. Had never been before and it was a bit of a last minute choice but absolutely recommend it!

Absolutely average food here, felt unwelcomed, was was denied sitting to eat my overpriced soggie food, with the excuse that it was only for meals (maybe they meant - not for foreigners? That's surely how it felt!) Undercooked soggie chips, cheap frozen fish and an attitude towards paying customers that would make the Queen herself feel ashamed of bearing such unworthy servants in her land. Trully an experience to forget and move on!!

Worst fish and chips ever. Chips undercooked pale and greasy, fish tasteless - never setting foot in the door again until I see a sign 'under new management' doesn't even deserve 1 star. I recon even the seagulls would be disappointed. Shocking how simple food can be done so badly.

My favourite chippy in the bay, I stop by often for dinner. I visited with my family this past Bank Holiday Sunday. 3 lovely ladies were working extremely hard to cope with the crowd of people coming from Babbacombe Downs being the only chippy open here on a Sunday. We were one of the last to be served before they ran out of fish and potatoes! They were very polite and apologetic to the people they sadly had to turn away. Drakes is always our go-to takeaway and we are never disappointed with their delicious food and outstanding service. 10/10 yet again!

Sunday evening after a few hours at the beach we decided to stop off for fish n chips on the way home. The time was approx 6.55pm, as they were not due to close until 7.45pm we didn't anticipate any problems. However, on arrival, there were several people hanging around outside, so we knew we might be in for a bit of a wait. Quite the opposite, we were told that they weren't taking anymore orders!!! Just simply said, all our chips are allocated! There was no apology, no explanation, nothing. This chippy is on our doorstep, we are loyal local patrons, but will never use this place again. I recommend you do not travel to this place for your dinner as they will likely decide not to cook more chips as they will be closing in an hour! Nice way to treat your local customers.

As a local guy who has lived in Torbay all of his life, I though for lunch I would have a portion of chips, just had my hair cut and my car was parked outside of Drakes Fish & Chips Takeaway & Restaurant so thought i'd pop in. I was greeted by a nice young lady who took my order , and I was then told a fresh batch of chips were being cooked, so proceeded to wait around 10 mins which is fine, however once I was handed my portion of chips I went to my car and thought i'd eat them there, however upon opening the chips you could clearly see how under cooked they were, very pale yellow chips, needless to say I binned them straight away, luckily the only saving factor was the portion of chips only cost £2.70, but £2.70 wasted. Save your money and go somewhere else that actually takes pride in the food they serve, how this place has won awards begs belief, you can be sure Drake's hasn't won any awards recently. Very disappointing.

Freshly prepared fish and chips made to order by friendly and cheerful staff. We only waited a few minutes for our order to be cooked, and thoroughly enjoyed our meal. My small fish and chips was just the right size, my husbands regular fish was perfect for him. We will definitely return.

Stopped here for daily specials on way home as gotta rush off to work so needed something quick and my was I in for a surprise the chips were lush the curry sauce well that was amazing and the nuggets were great too, all in all a pleasant meal and just the right size will definitely return again

Usually, we go to the one around the corner but have not been that happy of late with the quality and the price. Thought we'd try this one, Drakes on the Babbacombe Road. How blooming marvellous. Beautiful Hake, well cooked, deliciously moist and flavoursome. Not too much batter. Just perfect. Served alongside really well cooked chips, suitably sized and tasty. Cooked to order. Really friendly service too. Busy and vibrant takeaway with eating in options although I didn't read the smallprint on that. Prices very competitive. My new favourite chippy and will definitely be back soon. Highly recommend.

Fish very fresh and tasty,batter just right not to thick. The chips could have been better they were a little soft for me but then I realise that is down to taste.

Drake's is a lovely place to come to. The customer service was impeccable, the food was delicious and the atmosphere was amazing. You really get the sense that it is a busy chippy, and the staff there have time for each customer. You can eat in or take away (although I ordered to take away) and whilst my order was being prepared, I got to sit in the dining area which was a nice touch. I've not got a bad word to say about Drake's. You should definately try it if you haven't done so already.

We were looking for a quality fish and chips shop and we definitely found it. Drakes of Babbacombe was amazing. The lady behind the till was so warm and welcoming inviting us to sit in the restaurant part. Food arrived freshly cooked and piping hot. Tasty fish and chips with side order of mushy peas and curry sauce- delicious. She chatted to us and made us feel so welcome. Thank you. We’ll see you soon.

Takeaway fish and chips - very good quality and generous portions too. It was veyr quickly done too. We were very pleased.

Myself and my family stayed in the Babbacombe area for a week last week and whilst out walking, we discovered Drake's, we sat in the restaurant area out the back and practically had it all to ourselves as no one else came in, at first we thought it wouldn't be that great but the food was outstanding, some of the best fish and chips I've had (and I've been to a lot of chippies!)...all cooked to order and fresh, good portions and reasonably priced, service was excellent, would highly recommend, we went back at least twice during our stay, could even say it was better than the so called famous 'Hanburys' round the corner so give it a try, you won't be disappointed!

Disappointed this time on the portion sizes. Prices gone up and portions smaller. Left hungry this time in 15 years. Gutted

No Customer service in this prison like chip shop. A customer facing roll is to actually chat with customers. I couldn't wait to leave and I will never returned.

Used to be one the best in torbay, top 5 atleast! Now your within the worst 5 in the country!! Speed- Good, service- good but you need to get rid of your food supplier cause your fish ain't great, scampi is actually awful, chips are even sub standard, just get your product right and you'll be back

3 of us came here to dine in....but apparently not an option on Sunday...you ask why a 1 star review...because I looked on Google maps for fish and chip shops, found your shop, read your details and then pushed my mum in law (over 90yrs old) in a wheelchair to your shop to eat indoors. Only to be told rather sharply that you didn't do dine in on Sunday...

Ordered in, it was nice but not worth £30 for the amount!

Last day visiting this end Torquay and decided to get a chippy so we have a lazy night before a long drive home in the morning. We ordered from Drakes and the food was amazing. Would recommend to anyone.

Excellent fish and chips very tasty

The batter was crisp and light, the fish was fresh and tasty and the chips were soft in the middle and crisp on the outside, just lovely. Loads of chips, didn't go to waste as I took them home in a cool bag and reheated them next day to make another meal! The hake was delicious, very reasonably priced, and more sustainable than haddock or cod; so glad I tried it. Great end to my holiday in Babbacombe, eaten as the sun went down on the Downs. Thank you.

We got the large cod..bit greasy but the fish was lovely and white and cooked to perfection...on the way out my partner noticed you done new potato chips..and was gutted she didnt order any lol..

If you want a fantastic fish and chips with a lovely 2020 height of covid style service, this is the place! Spoke to the lovely server behind a prison glass style set up, got given a buzzer and told I’d have to wait 12 mins for my food. Buzzer went off in no more than 5 so I was back to the shop to pick up my food through a tiny air lock with the instructions to ‘just drop the buzzer’, similar to an armed police stand off type of vibe. Staff whipped up the buzzer with gloves and lots of tissue as if dealing with some high grade soviet era plutonium. Ate the food overlooking the sea views that are a short walk from the restaurant.

Crispy batter - amazingly fast delivery - good portions and proper large-flake cod. Best we have had on months! Will definitely be ordering again.

Take the very good fish and chips and enjoy them on nearby beautiful Babbacombe Downs. Wash down with a beer or cup of tea🤣 The portion of chips is ridiculously huge, especially during these times, so one portion of fish with chips and one without was more than enough with surplus in the bin. Don't feed the seagulls!🇳🇿🇬🇧🇺🇦🌻

Tasty chips! I ordered their 'regular' portion of cheesy chips. They were decent quality but found that they were very shy with the cheese.

I've often seen people queuing outside for takeaway fish and chips here, but had never previously eaten in. The decor is charming, tastefully late Victorian with framed sepia photographs of fishing in that era; the service was friendly and welcoming; the food excellent - crispy batter over pure white fish - and the sauces on the table were brand new and unopened. Babbacombe has TWO contenders for the best fish and chip shop in Devon - and as their main rival was closed at peak scoffing times, the advantage goes to Drake's.

Really did not like the food here had to wait over 20 minutes for chips and fish cake to be cooked and the chips were not even cooked they were still hard.

Had the hake and chips... Wow, it was amazing. Can see why they've got all their awards.

There are plenty of chip shops in town and at some time , we have tried most of them but I have no hesitation in recommending Drakes. Good fast service and a comprehensive menu. When your order is ready the blipper that you are given goes off and you collect your order.Simple and fun.

Excellent meal and fantastic service. Dine in. The fish - lovely light batter, non greasy, fresh tasting. The chips were cooked very well and also non greasy. The children’s portion is large so definitely value for money however maybe a smaller portion of chips and a small side of beans / peas / gravy may be a suggestion ? The service was faultless, the lady who looked after us was so warm natured, helpful and made us very welcome. Would definitely come here again if I come back to the area.
