This place is fantastic if you're after a Japanese meal. It's in the Chinatown area of Newcastle. The staff are so attentive and friendly. I had a really good ramen meal with a side order of tonkatsu, miso soup and a glass of yuzu sake. The prices were quite reasonable. It was just as good as any meal I've eaten in Japan itself. I will certainly come back here again.

Really nice meal in a very japanese restaurant that serve amazing miso soup and the sashimi was also quality. I had short rib soba noodles which were deliciuous, but I wish I had used a fork, as they were difficult to eat with my level of chopstick competance. My wife had a chicken teriyaki bento box, which looked nice too. The menu is huge and there is plenty of experimental choices that looked very japanese, so looking through the menu to make a selection took a little while. And the dining environment was a little odd, some nicer chairs and a table with a little more manouevering room would have been a plus. Overall, a lovely meal with very attentive staff, somewhere I would happily return to.

Japanese restaurant with an extensive menu. Food was delicious, service was very good and staff were pleasant and friendly. Restaurant was busy when we were in so its obviously popular . Located in Stowell Street which is Chinarown in Newcastle this Japanese restaurant is well recommended (by me at least !).

I have been to Dojo many times over the years and the food has generally of good quality. Unfortunately, we have had several of unpleasant experience at this restaurant this year due to the poor and unfriendly (rude) service. For context, I am always going out with a large group of friends (8-12 people) for Sunday lunch. And we would usually go to Dojo every other month. I understand that this is peak time for restaurants and we should expect degraded level of service, however the service we have received on the previous 2 to 3 visits has been appalling. In fact, just last month we called them over the phone on the day to request for booking in advance and we were being told off over the phone that we should not be coming as a large group during busy time. Which is amusing, considering that they have compulsory service charges for large group. This is really a shame as I have had plenty of pleasant experience dining there as a smaller group.

Stowell St has been lined with Chinese restaurants for as long as I can remember. Some have stood the test of time but many changed names and cuisines fairly frequently. Dojo is now one of a handful of ‘Japanese’ restaurants in the area and is certainly one of the more authentic ( I think I can say that with some authority having visited Japan many times over the years). It’s not that big and it’s not that plush - but it is fun and quirky. Don’t let the decor and ambiance deceive you though. This place offers some really tasty food with some great Japanese twists. We visited one Thursday evening with family and were pleased to see it busy. We probably over ordered with a bento box plus starter/snack each but we managed to get through it all - limited only by the size of the table! The noodle dishes were popular as were my mussels in sake which came complete with burner. Some dishes arrived in ice bowls complete with flashing lights. Sashimi and sushi were great too. Service was very friendly. The restaurant attracts a younger crowd in the main but caters for all. Really a fun place to go in the toon but with some serious flavours too.

Post lifting of some restrictions (and being one of the OG "run, hide, shield yourself" people) I felt in recent weeks (and post-jab) that it was safer for me to pop out for a spot of lunch.Dojo was that lucky restaurant.Upon entry I was a bit dismayed to find that social distancing was completely out of the window, each and every table was full, staff walked around with differing mask wearing ability, and customers just got up and walked around as they saw fit. However, they managed to tuck us into a corner that was ever so slightly a little bit further away from others. Sanitiser was available at the table, and, of course, we had to "check-in" prior to sitting. We were handed some dog-eared menus (possibly the same ones they had the last time I was there at some point in late 2019/early 2020) with hastily overwritten prices.Friends who have been to Dojo before my return complained about the vastly increased prices. I sort of argued that they, and others, have been badly affected by the pandemic, so a little price rise was likely. However, what I didn't expect was a 50% mark up on some of the dishes I enjoyed in the past.Still, as it was the first time I has been out out in ages, and the first time with a couple of friends, we ordered. The sushi platter was actually quite tasty, price was eye watering, but the actual sushi was varied and nice. The chicken teriyaki bento box was similarly expensive (a past favourite of mine which has increased a lot in price) BUT it was still as tasty as I remember.Staff were attentive, perhaps too attentive and lacked the ability to wear a mask over their nose, even taking off the mask to be heard more clearly!Still, overall it was a mixed affair, the food was nice, very nice in fact, some of the tastiest Japanese food around, BUT prices have increased remarkably.

Ordered a collection one Sunday evening. Place was busy picking up which was a good sign. I had the chicken teriyaki bento set which came with Miso soup, California roll 2pc, tofu skin nigiri 2pc and cooked prawn night 2pc, edame beans and rice. It was beautiful and so very tasty for £11. I also tried the soft shell crab and avocado sushi and the k prawn tempura nigiri all really well presented and tasted fresh and the rice soft and not too vingerary. There was way too much food as portion was massive. I will definately be re ordering to get my sushi fix.

There were five of us in our party and I think we were the only non asian people in the restaurant which was a good sign. We were seated quickly although the restaurant was quite busy. The selection on the menu was incredible and I must commend the staff on the amount of time they took explaining and recommending the selection of dishes which we eventually ordered. Went to this place on 11th July for my birthday as it was recommended by some friends, It was my first time trying Japanese food and it was amazing. We arrived 20 minutes late to our booking because of traffic and even though the place was very busy we were still able to get a table. After ordering a starter of miso soup we probably waited 2 minutes for it, I was shocked it was so quick. 5 minutes later our mains were here. Even though it was so busy we were able to get our food so quick (4 adults who had 4 main meals and a lot of side orders). The food was bloody fantastic, I would recommend this place 100%. The only thing I would probably grade this place down for was the menu, I'm pretty new to Japanese food so I had a hard time trying to decide what to have as nothing on the menu is really explained. I ordered the 'Teriyaki beef with winter mushrooms and chicken dumplings" which sounded okay but I think it could of had an explanation. It was strips of beef wrapped around mushrooms with a side order of rice, pickled veg, salad, salmon sashimi and the dumplings. That is the only negative thing I had to say about this, The prices are very reasonable, Me and my partner had 2 mains and 2 sides with our drinks it came to £30, you are very much paying for the quality and I would have paid a lot more for that quality of food. You will not regret going here.

Nunca me he sentido tan discriminado en mi vida, absolutamente espantoso. ¡Me fui deprimido y hambriento y para colmo estaba muy enfermo por esta comida! ! Came across this restaurant while enjoying a night out in Newcastle and what a surprise! The interior of the restaurant is very plain, but the food certainly makes up for what it lacks in decor. We were greeted very warmly and shown to our table, the place was very busy with a number of Asian people dining there, always a good sign. We weren’t sure what to order as the menu was huge so the very helpful waitress recommended we try the Bento Box, what a great choice. It came with a selection of miso soup, variety of sushi, two slices of raw salmon (superb), portion of rice, curry sauce and a beautifully cooked pork fillet cooked in a very light coating of breadcrumbs, the perfect choice and a taste to suit most palates. The perfect sampler to be more ambitious with your choice. Prices are very reasonable and you won’t be disappointed with the quality of the food. Looking forward to eating here again.

He seemed annoyed that we ordered so much food at the same time, sorry for spending money in the establishment that pays your wages. He even shook his head as he read out the order back to us which I found to be very rude. I like to order a lot of food at a new restaurant to try out as much as I can. I will return for sure but the waiter needs to up his game. All the other staff were very polite and friendly.

First time visit for us which just fancy a bite to eat near Chinatown. My better half like the place and we are tired and hungry so this place ticks all the boxes. We got served quite quickly as it was fairly early. The food was hot and tasty. I can recommend it to anyone to try it.

Came here over the weekend with a few people. We all had a nice dinner and thought the price was great for the amount. Service was friendly and helpful. There is a lot of choice and tasted very fresh. Recommended!

Was in Chinatown so why not Japanese. Basic restaurant . Tried the ginger rice with pork and also the rice with chicken teppanyaki. Pretty dry but filling. Nothing great as no sauce to add.next time would try sushi as the warm dishes are average. The service is quiet and friendly. Go for the sushi if you want.

Returned to Dojo for a birthday treat. We had an incredible selection of sushi and sashimi which was all delicious and freshly prepared. So impressed with the tastes but also the presentation, a real treat for the eye. The Dragon rolls were particularly good, as were the soft shell crab. The service was efficient and friendly too.Well done Dojo.

Visited Dojo for the second time yesterday, took my dad for fathers day as he likes that kind of food and was impressed after my previous visit. He and my brother were both also impressed with the food, we all had bento boxes. I admit I preferred what I had last time which was a mix of the smaller dishes but it was still nice and at risk of repeating myself - really authentic. There is so much choice on the menu and I found that even as a vegetarian I was very well catered for.

Been here a couple of times now and the food has been very good both times. The only issue was too much choice and little description in the menu. The waiter took all the correct orders and the food came fast but he never came back to check if the food was good and it took ages for the bill to arrive. Overall good experience and would definitely come back, but some improvement is needed ;)

This is a wonderfully authentic restaurant with reasonably priced, and exceptional, food.It is a good position and serves the most authentic least westernised Japanese food in Newcastle.

We were really impressed by this place. We went because of the reviews - cautiously because Stowell street tends to have all- you- can-eat buffets and we like St Sushi very much. Our waitress was sweet, but her English was such that she couldn't actually help us. We guessed - well, happily. We chose an assortment of sushi and it was all fabulous. Plan to go back and try the hot pot

Came here for dinner with friends, we didn't make a booking on a Tuesday night and the place was busy, but not jammed, so we were fine. Service was leisurely but friendly and helpful - I have a ton of temporary diet requirements and our server successfully guided me through the menu and made sure everything I ordered fit the bill.I had a miso soup and lovely, sesame-tinged seaweed salad to start, then the 10 pieces of sushi deal. My friends had huge, elaborate bentos which looked great. The fish was fresh and tasty - nothing revolutionary, but a very solid choice for Newcastle - and well-presented. I'd certainly recommend everything that I had.I came back a few weeks later for a bowl of udon. The noodles were great, thick and slurpable. The "Mixed Meat udon" was, bizarrely, all seafood except for some really fatty pork. I found the prawns very overcooked, coarse and mealy and not even pleasant to eat. I liked that there were a lot of vegetables in the soup though, and it was a very comforting, satisfying meal.I'd happily return again anytime for sushi or soup, but I've had much better versions of both elsewhere. This place is reliable, but nothing out-of-the-ordinary. It fulfills a craving.

I treated one of my (very hungry) sons to a Sushi lunch. We ordered far too much, as usual, but greedily ate up everything as it was all delectable. The variety and quality of sushi was amazing, our favourites being Dragon roll, the Tempura soft shell crab with mango, the eel, the salmon roe & octopus. The sashimi was delicate and fresh, also well priced for the quality and size of the serving. A pleasure to look at and eat. The service was quick and efficient. Our waiter was particularly patient as we navigated our way through the menu and also gave us some helpful suggestions.Lovely!

Visited here on the spur the moment after derby day yesterday.Having visited Japan late last year I can say its the most authentic Japanese meal I have had in Newcastle.I was in Fujiyama the previous night, which was also nice, however in Dojo the experience was much more like many of the Japanese restaurants I dined in over there and also cheaper than Fujiyama and Hana Hana. Food was nice, brought back memories and I would go again for sure.

He has Japanese friends who relate to the food as authentic Japanese. All that we ordered was excellent. Staff are very helpful and patient. They were happy to explain everything for us and to help guide our choices.Bento boxes are excellent.Tempura prawns divine!Octopus rolls strange, but a wow and a must try.

A brilliant family meal in this little quirky restaurant in the heart of Chinatown. Three sashimi and sushi lovers had beautifully presented and fresh meals whilst the other two had a beef curry and pork casserole type dish with dumplings. We all went for the Bento style meals which made the experience very easy to order! The atmosphere was great with Japanese TV playing on the back wall, and lots of authentic memorabilia decoration. Very friendly and helpful staff who explained the non familiar items on our order. Recommend highly , very reasonably priced and can't wait to return!

I lived on Osaka for 5 years and getting decent authentic Japanese food has always been difficult. Dojo is as close as I have experienced here at home, even down to the huge screen showing J-Pop! Great "bento" style meal deals are available and I had a mackerel dish that took me right back. My wife also really enjoyed the place and the attentive staff I just hope it's busier next time and more people take the time to experience it. A place that deserves to be a success. We are going back for Valentine's Day!

Been here on multiple occasions, food serving is fast and of considerate portions. Prices are competitive amongst the Japanese chains around. One of the reasons i kept returning is the wide exotic and interesting choices of custom sushi such as soft shell crab and mango sushi and many more.

Delicious yakisoba and beef curry as our mains. Excellent tempura and spring rolls for sides. Loved that rice came with the curry at no extra cost. Friendly, efficient staff. Good range of drinks. Central location and nice ambience.

Absolutely terrible service had to ask for cutlery after waiting 40 minutes for food which was bland soggy and Luke warm staff just didn't seem as if they knew what they had to do the restaurant is actually in a bouncing bar with music blasting I couldn't here the waitress or even have a conversation with my wife it was that loud I have never experienced anything like it in my life I would definitely not go back and would definitely not recommend to my worst enemy it was that bad there is much better places to eat but if you like sitting in a night club and dining go for it!

Visiting friends and they organised lunch at Fuego’s. Had the tortilla and it was delicious. Spent hours after in the shop spending far too much money (but managed to get a fair bit of Christmas shopping done). Loads of choice and the staff were really helpful and friendly
