Great traditional pub with traditional pub food. Had the belly pork which was excellent and there is a really good range of beers and other drinks. Definitely worth a visit.

We came here about a year ago for Sunday dinner and it was so good that we decided to return back!! It wasn’t busy at all and had to wait 45 mins for our food!! Not one of the waitress came over to apologise!! The table next to us told us they had to send their food back as it came out cold!! When the food arrived we expected it to be how it was on our first visit, as the menu was the same! When it arrived the vegetables were all under the meat, where before you could help yourself as they were all in individual Dishes!! The beef was so over cooked it was chewy! My plate was so full of different veg some of which I wouldn’t have chosen to eat!! None of this was stated on the menu, that it is all on a plate! The waitress didnt explain anything to us at all. I had to send my food back when it arrived! The lady said it is new owners which sadly you can see. When we went before it was so busy. When I ordered my drinks at the bar the 2 blonde girls were just chatting away about lat night etc events that they were getting up too. Not great customer service at all. It such a shame it wasn’t how it was the first time we visited. Will not be returning.

Looks can deceive. Pub is in desperate need of a refurb but the staff were friendly and our roast dinners were very tasty and good value.

Visited today (a very quiet Saturday lunch time!) and sat on the terrace outside. Food was brilliant and the lady serving was so cheerful and friendly. Thank you for a delicious lunch 😊

We had the £10 lunch meal today. One of the best burgers I've ever tasted. Great service and excellent value for money. Highly recommended.

Great food at a fair price and fantastic service

Great Sunday roast and good value. Would definitely recommend. Staff are nice too, very friendly and squeezed us in at last minute on a fully booked bank holiday Sunday.

Visited 28 April party of 5 table booked for 6 . All had Sunday roasts, very disappointed, more of the food served went back uneaten than we actually ate. potatoes were burnt, should never have been served, veg barely cooked, meat was tough, no pigs in blankets available so asked if we could have an Extra Yorkshire instead , then they added the extra yorkshires to the bill, only taking it off again when I queried it. More food was sent back uneaten than we had actually ate. One of our party found a small piece of stone in his meal, which was pointed out at the time, were told they'd let the chef know. No apology. Will definitely not be returning or recommending . Shame as on our previous visits meals here have been amazing.

Lovely atmosphere, great menu and friendly staff.

Good food, fast service. Atmosphere was not huge but they had not long opened for the day when we were there so suspect this picks up especially in the evening.

We had a great experience here. The food was delicious and of great quality and the portions were a really generous size. The staff were above and beyond and really friendly and helpful. Would definitely recommend!

Staff consists of young kids. The language from the bar staff was disgusting, young kids 18 or 20, and the music banging out was quite horrendous. Don't think I'll rush back.

The meal, although nice, was disappointing to a point due to the difference between the menu and the plate's contents. Having heard that the dumpling has brought back its £10 specials we thought we'd pop in, having previously enjoyed the excellent food here. My choice was the whole tail scampi, served with chunky chips and home made minted mushy peas. However, the scampi was presented with thin 'fries' and regular peas. I chose not to mention anything as, I am guessing from the generous (large) portions of both peas and fries, that this was likely the kitchen's way of making up for it. Although I enjoyed what I was served (Indeed I couldn't quite manage it all) I would, if I'd been informed when ordering, have ordered a different dish. Maybe I am being a little harsh scoring as low as three, but I would much prefer to be told if what I am ordering is not available as advertised so that I can make my own judgement as to my selection.

We had a great lunch meal recently. Really good food and great value for money. I had the special of the day which was bacon and cheese quiche. The other meals coming out of the kitchen all looked good. Would recommend.

Says food served 1200-2100, but arrived midafternoon to be told the kitchen was shut.

I drink here very regularly, and it is always good beer but i have never eaten here. i decided i would try the food after hearing such good reviews, well they were correct and i had a wonderful meal of prawn thia curry and my collegue had liver and he was also very imressed with the quality. thank you Josh and the staff for a lovely evening. will do this many more times

Have been coming to the Dumpling for years for the Sunday Roast but recently it has gone downhill badly. Not sure if it’s new owners or chef but the Sunday Roast is now very poor. Vegetables are under cooked, Beef is poor quality and very tough, gravy used to be amazing now it’s just bland. Sugar Snaps belong in a stir fry and nowhere near a roast dinner. Sort it out Devon Dumpling as you are quickly losing loyal customers!!!

Just an amazing busy place which is proven by being packed when it's lashing with rain on a Sunday afternoon. Staff are very friendly and the food is the best.

Have been a regular customer of the ‘Dumpling’ and their roasts were the best BUT not now! Went today and ordered the same as usual 1 beef & 1 belly pork. It used to come with veg in a dish with roast potatoes, pilled with meat then large Yorkshire on top. Not now, veg scattered on plate (looked as though they had been placed to look attractive however it was cold, I am guessing by the time it took to do it!)Pots in middle. Little very thin sliced beef on my husbands topped with a soggy yorkshire. Mine the same but a slice of belly pork with burnt crackling(Would not have put it on the plate) see below, asked for extra gravy as usual when ordering but didn’t come in a jug it was a dipping bowl(tiny enough for one of us) and was very thin and watery. No cauliflower cheese unless you paid extra, this again has changed. No one came and asked if our meal was ok. We left after paying as no one came to clear our plates. It wasn’t that busy as we booked for 2pm. Will not return, new plating not for us. Used to be our local, not now. Don’t change what isn’t broke!

Sunday lunch for 4. My gammon had been sat in the oven and dry, no apple puree as advertised. When I asked I got a eggcup of apple sauce out of a jar. Veggies were very disappointing, Yorkshire greasy and the gravy salty. Chicken was ok but beef left a bit to be desired. What has happened 😳 to the Dumpling.

Went here for Sunday lunch, after waiting 40mins for food. Very disappointed, couldn't eat any vegetables as they were so hard, certainly not cooked. When asked if everything OK, we explained this to the manager who really wasn't interested, certainly won't be going here again and certainly won't be recommending.

Excellent service well looked after. I needed something different from the menu due to a salt intolerance, and it was no problem they cooked it for me. The Sunday roast was very good the 4 of us enjoyed our meals. And the drinks are reasonable as well. Lovely staff and good food.

We called in today at 2pm. Ordered a drink & ordered 2 meals. 1 beef roast & 1 trio roast. Bearing in mind, it was not at all busy. It took half an hour for our food to come out!!! It was only warm, not hot!!! But, it was warmer outside, than it was in the pub!!! We were absolutely dithering in there. That’s when we noticed, that most customers @ the bar, we’re all sat with there coats on!!! Not a warm. Will be a long time before we do that again!!!

Only had gammon and it was burnt and tough. Not too easy to cook.

Lovely cosy pub which was bigger on the inside than it looked. Quaint eating areas. All very clean with friendly hard working staff. The meals were huge !!! Delicious & we'll cooked.

Fantastic pub grub. Sausage mash and gravy great, chips gorgeous, Thai Red Urey perfect. Luke and Phoebe friendly and efficient / lovely staff.

You get what you pay for really. Ate here in September, service was ok, staff spent more time talking at the bar with other customers than anything else. Food is ok also, portions are reasonable and decently priced. The atmosphere is nice though and quaint inside, plenty of free parking also.

I haven't actually sampled the food here yet, but judging from the menu and the specials board, I'd say it's very good value for money - a little more expensive than some pubs, but nevertheless a wide and interesting choice. I shall update the review once I've visited. The interior décor was charming, it's clearly an old pub with history, and the beer garden has been laid out on different levels with several discrete sections. The fishpond, with tinkling water-feature, did make me want to pee before I'd finished my first pint, but otherwise it was a charming break. Update: I've eaten here three times since the initial review above, and can say that all meals so far tried have been very nice. The portions, be warned, are on the generous side. You might not have room for the entire meal, let alone desert.

Delicious home cooked food. Didn't have a full menu like before with lighter bites. But thoroughly enjoyed large meal and the yummy desserts.

Toll, wenn sich Gutes so lange hält. Habe vor ca. 35 Jahren einige Zeit in Torquay gelebt. Das Devon Dumpling war damals eine meiner absoluten Lieblingsorte. Unvergessen das tolle Essen und die Folk - Musikabende in der oberen Etage. Heute war ich nach dieser langen Zeit wieder da - und es war genauso ausgezeichnet wie früher, die gefüllte Hühnerbrust und das Curry - 1a ! Die Atmosphäre im Pub, immer noch super. Immer noch bestens besucht. Toll, dass Ihr jetzt neue Toiletten habt. Oben wird wohl gerade renoviert ?!

Excellent pub. Quality food with generous portions - good value and extensive menu. Helpful polite staff. Good choice of real ale - Doombar and Jail ales and Thatchers cider on draught. Large garden . Highly recommended. Lunchtime ploughmans and filled jackets exceptional.

Great little place, found when checking Google and booked a table. The food was reasonably priced and quite large portions. Atmosphere was ice and the staff were great. Free on site parking. Actually missing this place now we are back from holiday. Well worth the visit, you won't be disappointed.

Such a lovely cosy pub with great staff and delicious food, the Sunday roast isn't honestly one of the best I've had.

Food was delicious. Service was slow (lunch time) but that could have just been that particular day. Good choice of food. I recommend the chicken breast wrapped in bacon in a creamy sauce with potatoes. :)

Visited for a Midweek lunch. Food was freshly cooked, plentiful, and very tasty. Garden at the rear, relaxing surroundings. Must visit again soon.

An excellent fish and chips, served with lemon and tartare sauce, really crispy batter and good chips. No option for mushy... We booked in advance, and they'd seated us in a bit that was awkward access (table long side with a wall behind and not much space either side to squeeze through) for some of us, but it was in a quiet area of the pub. Toilets were very clean.

Fantastic food,service and a great quiz night too!!

We booked to have our wedding reception here, a group of approximately 22 of us. Hired the upstairs of the restaurant, drinks on arrival and buffet food. Leading up to the wedding day I had telephoned to confirm details, I had asked if we could hire a DJ but was told this wasn’t an option however they would have music playing which could be turned up upstairs. We agreed and went in the evening before to decorate. We asked for cleaning products as it was quite dirty but we completely understood they had another booking in that day so hadnt had chance to clean yet. When we arrived after our wedding ceremony, we went upstairs where the lights were off, no music playing, no drinks on arrival, and the cleaning products we still left on the floor from the night before… we had to ask for our drinks and wait 20 minutes, we had to ask for the lights to be turned on and patio doors to be unlocked, we then asked for the music to be turned on to be told the speakers don’t work and haven’t done for months! After an hour we still had no food and no way of listening to any music, we asked if we could now get a dj as there was no atmosphere but we were told we couldn’t because they may get complaints. We asked to speak with someone in charge but was told no one was on site?! So we made the decision to find last minute alternative premises to go to for a celebration, we explained this to the staff, who then laughed at us and said “They don’t have anything to do with upstairs, we just work the bar!” It was disgusting, were treated appallingly with absolutely no respect or regard for the fact it was our wedding day! We cannot believe the way the staff treated us! They ruined our day and we will never step foot in there again and we will be telling all our friends and family about this!

We were there for an 18th birthday party. There were about 15 of us and we had pre-ordered our food. Those of us who had starters were impressed, however it went downhill after that. The two pasta mains came out stone cold and the chicken in the chicken salad was raw. The chicken burger was greasy and the bun fell apart on the first bite. I was told the steak was as chewy as an old boot As it was a party, we did not want to complain or make a fuss. Saying that, the staff were friendly and helpful, shame about the food

A pub of great charm, a friendly welcome from the bar staff, a great selection of tap beers and ales. A good selection of food from a light bite lunch to an evening meal, all well priced and served by an efficient team. Plenty of tables indoors but not cramped, a brilliantly realised use of the garden space utilised over three levels. Good sized car park with disabled access to the bar areas if needed. It does get busy at weekends, I would suggest booking in advance. Lastly, the rest rooms are good and clean.

Went for a hot drink and a quick snack after school on Friday ( i was time limited) and we received great and quick service. Definitely will go back.

Tight squeeze in the car park could see a few bumps n scratches happening here, but food ,staff n service good as gold

A lovely friendly pub providing great hospitality and terrific food via an extensive and varied menu. Table service was swift and efficient and we stayed to enjoy the quiz night which was great fun, and catered for all levels of general knowledge. Raffles held on Thursday and Sundays, Sunday lunch is superb too.

This is a lovely traditional pub offering a choice of wines and beers as well as a very extensive choice of food. There are different menus to choose from with everything from light lunches to Sunday roasts. The cooking is very good and the staff are helpful and pleasant. Dogs are allowed.

Cosy pub with tasty menu at affordable prices!!

Called for dinner Saturday night with my partner, someone recommended this pub before … So to the food I’ve ordered burger with pulled pork for extra 2£ and Haddock fish cakes and my partner fish and chips and hallumi fries , my burger turned up with just pulled pork in it (probably waiter fault there), coleslaw seemed bit old as all the mayo been washed out of it the fish cakes smelled bit too fishy to me.. Hallumi fries hmm ok 👍 my partners fish and chips bit much batter and said floury.. there were no actual waiting staff just guys jumping out from the bar (understand this as we got quiet winter times now ) pub rather loud, thought there will be live music or some kind of music in dining area instead just people drinking and talking loud . Looking at menu online thought it is a really good place to dine especially on Saturday evening I might by “picky” as been chef for over a decade and would pick on anything , didn’t complain to staff as it’s not my thing to do but if it was really really bad I certainly would .

Parsnip soup amazing, coleslaw very creamy, burger eas tasty, hunters chicken was good, not dry. Chips most were nice but some where undercooked.

We took our friend/ neighbour (96yrs young) for a Christmas lunch on Monday 12th. This had been pre booked. We’ve never eaten a meal in such cold surroundings before. We were told there was a problem with the heating. We were tempted to leave but because our friend has mobility issues, it would have been too stressful for her. On hindsight it was far more stressful sitting wrapped in a shawl with her coat over her legs, shivering whilst eating with fingerless gloves on. If there was a problem with the heating, why couldn’t a portable heater been provided. I think we were the only ones having Christmas lunch but there were others sat eating with their coats on. The food was ok but I think we were all too cold to appreciate it. The staff were apologetic but didn’t offer a solution. Couldn’t even have a hot coffee because the machine was broken

Great old pub in the Shiphay area of Torquay. The food is excellent but ensure you book at the busier times or you might not get a table. The real ales are superbly kept and at the moment Doom Bar, and 2 beers from the Dartmoor brewery are available. The pub is like the Tardis - plenty of seating around the L shaped bar. There is also an outside area for smoking and sitting which has been well designed to give maximum space. The pub has a darts and euchre team and according to their website 'one of Devons longest running golf societies'

Lovely pub would be even nicer if they put the heating on!!! Flipping freezing sitting here with coats on waiting for our food. Definitely wouldn’t come when it’s cold. This is the closest we came to heat

The food is absolutely outstanding as is the service. What let's it down after our vist yesterday evening was how cold it was inside. No heating was on so I asked one waitress who said it's just about to come on. It did not so asked another waitress and she said its can be slow in heating up. In actual fact it never came on. My 77 year old mum was freezing and we ate in our coats and left sooner than we planned. Also because it was so cold our food was piping hot but went cold within 10 minutes. We were going to book for boxing day but we can't be that cold again when eating. They really need to address the heating because as I said, the food is to die for and I really want to go back but unfortunately not when it's so cold. All the people eating were in coats and hats, a couple of ladies moved tables to see if it was warmer and most people left early. Come on Devon dumpling please put your heating on.

We chose to have our "date night" at the Devon Dumpling after hearing great things about it! (My colleagues in Somerset had told me to visit also!) We really enjoyed ourselves, the ambience was fab with the candles and along with the buildings characteristics. The food was great and the staff were very attentive! Can't wait to visit again.

Standard Torquay pub fayre at Dumpling Ward (well, it is close to Torbay Hospital!). Very friendly, good service, good value, plenty of room and parking OK. Pretty venue, I'm sure we'll be back.

Came here for a meal as recommended also real ale Doom Bar and Jail Ale. Fabulous food. Plaice and liver both cooked to perfection. Will definitely come here again.
