Visited for the first time on Sunday for a carvery and it’s safe to say we weren’t disappointed!! Food was lovely, staff were very attentive and friendly. Will definitely be visiting again :)

We went to the Defford Arms on a recommendation from a friend and it didn't disappoint! We were greeted as soon as walked in and our waitress Charlotte was absolutely brilliant. She was always on it and super friendly (as were all staff we came across). Wilson the chef was super helpful and friendly also. The food was outstanding. Special mention to the carrots which were lovely and sweet - all veg tasted delicious. Partner had the meat and he couldn't fault it. Highly recommend the carvery here, top notch!

2nd visit this month. Yet again another fantastic cod and chips. The staff are really friendly and a great pint of Butty Bach

Having read a number of recent positive reviews my wife and I decided to try the Sunday Lunch at £14.95. My wife opted for Beef and Pork and I chose Beef and Turkey. Don't think that the meat could have been cut any thinner. Both the Pork and Turkey were dry. The Roast Potatoes were overcooked and hard in the centre. The rest of the vegetables were fine. We both opted for a scoop of ice cream at £1.95 each. Each was served in Sundae glass. The scoop turned out to be just a long sundae sized teaspoon. Overall poor value! Staff were excellent although there was a long delay before our table was cleared. On settling our bill I was asked if everything was OK. Before I could answer I asked whether I was paying with cash or card. As I have said really disappointed.

Four of us went on Friday night. Two of us had the 2 fish and chips for €20 and it was excellent. The fish was large,white and flakey.. our friends had the hunters chicken and the scampi and both really enjoyed them. The staff were really friendly and we are definitely going back soon

We managed to get in here by calling up the night before, which was really lucky because it was pretty busy as we were sat down, lots of tables filling up. Seating is amply spread out, plenty of parking, etc. We waited for a couple of minutes for drinks and about 15 mins to be called up for food, which was perfectly acceptable. I am going to put this out there, if you are expecting a Gastro Pub, this is not it. This is a finely tuned machine of a Sunday Carvery and it's absolutely glorious! To all the reviews who have complained about being rushed, I think 2 hours is plenty to eat a Carvery, if you want a Gastro sit down and to take in a couple of bottles of wine over a few hours, this is not it. Meats (there was a choice of 4) were lovely, beef slightly rare, gammon was gorgeous, and the accompanying vegetables were superb. Broccoli, peas, carrots, stuffing, dauphinoise potatoes were amazing, cabbage, almost lost count of how much there was. All topped off with a lovely yorkshire and some great gravy. Even the plates are piping hot and guess what, the 2 hour limit works, it's really busy and because of that, EVERYTHING is fresh and nothing overcooked. Having been to every carvery within 10 miles of this, I can honestly say hand on heart, it's straightforwardly the closest thing you will get to home cooking and the best in the county.

Short notice take away. Served up and ready within minutes of phoning. Got home, piping hot and delicious. Perfect for a lazy evening.

First visit, early evening. We thought the food was great, excellent value for the quality and wide menu choice including a carvery; husband fussy but thought the turkey on carvery was plentiful/succulent with fab veg. Polite, but business like welcome. Biggest grumble was the brightness of the lighting… so unnecessary and didn’t understand the reason for it. Ten bright lights from ceiling in smallish dining area and more all round on thrbwalls, the type with no shades; so harsh on the eyes and diminished any ambience or enjoyable relaxing experience. Hope this might be positive customer feedback. See you again, but day time without the lights!

great carvery and service as usual. Never had a bad meal here in regular visits over the last couple of years.

Food was nice and carvery had a lot of choice. However the service let it down, especially the blonde young girl who clearly has no manners or people skills. Coming over to our table and saying ‘can you go get your carvery now’ is apparently the way this pub speaks to customers, bearing in mind they had only just cleared our starters. Then when my friend hurts herself due to broken furniture, she walks past and smirks/snickers at her instead of asking if she’s ok. Disgusting attitude. Would not Recommend this pub at all.

We had the evening festive menu last night and WOW. All three course were beautiful - as always the best food at the Defford!! Thank you to the lovely staff who looked after us and the chef who cooked a delicious meal for our Christmas gathering!

I booked a table of 5 for a 2pm slot we arrived 4 minutes early and was seated straight away. Ordered drinks and 5 x meat carvery, we where told we would get called up to go get our food, 35mins later we where asked up. The food was lovely one of the best I have had but as we where eating pudding we where given the bill and was told we had 20mins to leave, so long story short once we where called up for our food we had 1hr30 to eat have pudding blow the candles out on my cake and leave

What a fabulous Carvery we had this evening - 6 of us including our 5 year old twins, who 'smashed the lot!' Fantastic meats, a huge choice of veg , sauces etc. Brilliant desserts available, wonderful staff, lovely atmosphere.... we will 100% be back! Thank again x

Sunday carvery Absolutely excellent The plates were hot the food was piping hot even at 6pm there was a full fresh carvery to have including three delicious joints of meat the staff were extremely welcoming will definitely be going again 😊

The Sunday Carvery’s are out of this world. Absolutely beautiful. Wish there were more carvery’s like this around the country. We are so glad they took the plunge to get this place I don’t think they have regretted one minute of it. The Steaks are beautiful too in the evenings. Keep up the good work. Both of you. Hands down our FAVOURITE roast. Incredible choices of vegetables and meat. Piping hot food. The waitresses are so lovely, they put 110% into making sure you have an enjoyable meal. We would go every week if we could!!

Another Great evening. Sorita and her staff are friendly and welcoming. We all had the carvery plus a choice from the sweet menu - excellent food at a very reasonable price. We were a group of 23 and we had pre-booked, so we were served promptly. Thoroughly recommend.

Had an early evening meal at 18:00. All 4 of us had a good quality pub meal at a reasonable price. Attentive non oppressive service. A good experience.

We are regular visitors to The Defford Arms, for good reason…the staff are friendly and the food is lovely and great value for money. The main reason for the review is to counter the review left below as we are unable to comment. We were eating when this gentleman came into the bar area and literally screamed and shouted at the female manager. His behaviour was horrendous to the point where my husband was about to intervene. My daughter and sister have stayed in their rooms and honestly had no issues. Please don’t take this review at face value as I really feel that this gentleman has fuelled his ridiculous complaint and it isn’t a true reflection of the establishment or the staff. He simply wanted ‘compensation’ which he screamed on several occasions!

I didn’t try the restaurant. But the Defford Arms accommodation is misrepresented and in my opinion, overpriced at £100.00 per night. They don’t make it clear, but the bar & restaurant is not open on Monday or Tuesday and there are no staff in attendance on those days either, you are on your own. There is no WiFi. There are two rooms, the larger upstairs room has only one window which is right above a noisy refrigeration unit that operates intermittently 24 hours a day. There are faulty electrical fittings in the larger upstairs room and loose taps in the more cramped, downstairs room. Neither room has anywhere to put your things in the bathroom. How do I know about both rooms? Because during my stay and without my consent, all my belongings were moved to the inferior downstairs room while I was out. This was due to the management deciding they needed the upstairs room for another customer. They couldn’t even apologise. The downstairs room is a place where you can hear conversations from the occupants above. Not much sleep that night. The reaction of the management to my complaints was to suggest that I went elsewhere, not much of a choice at 6pm. Take my advice and avoid!

Worst customer service in regards to hotel I've ever known. Food and kitchen staff absolutely immaculate though. Food 10/10 star rating but hotel room shower head was broken and nearly fell on me and then was blamed for breaking this! Only heating is a small fan heater (that's all there was at this time in particular) that they dont even show you where to find it. Told us there were towels in the room after we had looked for these towels so we knew there wasnt any in the room and didnt apologise for lying in regards to this. Floorboards squeak at the slightest move and also feels like you're walking on a live ship. Was very polite in how we addressed this and was rudely confronted in regards to these issues and made out to be a liar even though there was quite clearly no lies as it was a period of events rather than just one thing. They even provided a 30% refund of £15 so if you dont believe there is anything wrong with the room and that it was broken by the guests.... why would you refund! After further giving a follow up review, again greeted with a rude response. Which shows how obviously professional these people are. It's a shame as the food is to absolutely die for and the kitchen staff we met were absolutely lovely and very polite. Definitely wouldnt recommend the hotel stay, not worth the headache. 100% recommend the food though. In short words, cannot accept any responsibility and should not be charging what they do for the room, it's a shame as small repairs and it would be a very lovely place to stay and a slight staff turnover or even change in staff attitude to be more accommodating to people who are staying here when these situations occur.

OMG, from the moment you walk in, you get this very warm professional welcome. Staff are cheerful, professional, polite they took our orders straight away. You are invited to the carvery so there isn’t any of this queuing to be severed. My hubby is gluten free so he was told what not to have, but he had loads of choices and was delivered gluten free gravy and was told if we had meantimes gluten free when booking he would have had gluten free Yorkshires puddings. The food is outstanding, very hot. The staff checked on you from time to time, even noticing if drinks were getting low so none of this trying to get attention. Plates were taken away quickly. We watched all the staff, and everyone is the same, very happy with their jobs, one other best thing was watching them clear a table, the best I have seen for a very long time. Not only were the tables cleaned down properly going round all the edges, lifting up the condiments, cleaning them too. But the washed down a high chair cleaned everything even the legs. We ordered pudding which are highly recommended. It was so good there, we returned at the weekend too. Highly, highly recommend, the owners have it spot on. 100% to them and their team, nothing I would change absolutely brilliant. Thank you

Best carvery I have had locally-hands down, service was friendly, quick and easy. Food was warm and so much choice! Beef was amazing and the sides were so lush with so much to choose from. Will be back to try the main menu for sure.

This was the best Carvery I have had, and I have had lots... myself and my Daughter went yesterday 09/10/22. For my Birthday. The service was absolutely amazing. The food was beautifully cooked, not dry, or overdone. Loads of choice. And even though we were stuffed the puds called and were equally amazing 👏 We will be returning.... time, and time again....

Having seen reviews I was keen to try this place. I would say it was an average carvery at best. Roast potatoes were awful, tasted like they’d been warmed up from a previous serving and the beef was so over cooked it had no taste.

First time we have ever been here and have to say great service great food! Covid restrictions in place Hand sanitizer provided throughout, staff very aware and still providing excellent service. Chef Is great three choices of meats, I had beef my partner had all three lol. It was delicious many variety of vegetables and potatoes very tasty gravy and Hot plates I would highly recommend a visit.I don’t normally like carvey but these guys have got it spot on for me. We will return 100%

Last minute decision to eat out. Booking made easily. Controlled entry and compulsory covid tracing sign in. Well spaced tables. Plenty of efficient staff.Well controlled system of going to carvery. Waitress called us when it was our turn so that we were not in a queue. Chef put all the food of our choice onto a plate and waitress carried directly to our table. The food was amazing. A perfect roast lunch. Beef was succulent thin slices , a plethora of perfectly cooked vegetables , tasty gravy and sauces of our choice. Totally recommend to anyone who enjoys a traditional roast lunch. Very reasonably priced. Good service and pleasant smiling ( very busy) staff controlling all aspects and making a very enjoyable experience.

We decided to take dinner at The Defford Arms recently. The vast majority of the reviews have been positive since the pub changed hands so we were looking forward to our first return there. The old adage applies, however, that you only get one chance to make a first impression and, sadly, ours was mixed. The food arrived quickly and was very good quality as has been reported by other customers. This is obviously important when you eat out but the dining experience has to be more than just good food and customer care is right up there in terms of importance. Some of the waiting staff were a little brusque and the place was packed which probably didn’t help them retaining their usual composure? The thing that struck us, however, was the poor response to covid considerations? It did not appear that they had reduced the number of tables being used and the tables in use were tightly packed in when compared to some other restaurants we had visited since lockdown? None of the waitresses wore gloves, none wore face coverings, cutlery was delivered in bare hands, and there was no one way system to prevent customers passing each other. On this last point the pub has two points of entry so they could have easily made one an exit and one an entry? Sanitisers were few and far between too. Table cleaning was haphazard with a swish across the top surface and no cleaning of chairs or other furniture that could have been touched was carried out. I’m afraid that a full order book appeared to overtake the need to keep their customers safe and they should seriously reflect on this. The pub was full...probably partly due to their glowing reviews and partly thanks to the Eat Out to Help Out initiative. I wonder if they will be as full from September?Thoroughly enjoyed the food but the overall dining experience was less enjoyable.

Best Carvary I’ve ever had. Meat is beautiful, soft and succulent. All veg was fresh. Staff very friendly. Lovely place very clean.

Just had a carvery from here, a Wednesday night in August. Place was busy, due to the Eat Out to Help Out initiative, and also the weather that forced some from outside to inside. Service was a little slow, but we weren't in any hurry, and i think some of the staff were new and being trained. Food was really good, plenty of meat and veg and a great range of choice. Most importantly though, the food was good - meat was succulent and tasty. Two of the kids had burgers, which were large and filling. Desserts were nice too. We will be back.

We visited the Defford Arms on Wednesday 5th August. We were greeted with a friendly smile, signed in used the hand sanitizer and were shown to our table. The tables were socially distanced away from each other. We decided to start with the soup of the day a very enjoyable leek soup. We then had lasagna one of the best I have ever had and plaice which was equally as good. We were to full for a sweet. A delightful pub that is very well run and I am it will be a success for the owners.

Can’t fault this carvery/ restaurant. The chef is wonderful. Also business partner is great at her job. The food is great! For carvery On Sunday’s The chef cooks wonderful steaks too. I would recommend anyone to try this establishment

Excellent service felt very safe. Tables good distance apart. Screens in front of carvery you just went up said what you wanted and staff put it on plate then brought it to your table. All done very wellWould definitely go again . Thanks for a lovely lunch

We ordered a Sunday takeaway lunch during lockdown. It was a hearty meal- one beef, one pork- and was certainly good value. The excellent gravy was served separately. I will recommend it.

Popped in after a recommendation for the carvery, the pub has been transformed, it's beautiful decor and very friendly staff made for a very warm welcome. We had the carvery the meat was amazing and the wide range of vegetables and potatoes were delicious and very fresh. We can't wait to go back.

I wouldn't normally go for a carvery for lunch, but it looked so good, with masses of different veg - sadly, they're still burning the parsnips! The beef was beautifully tender. Unfortunately, there is no dog-friendly section.

We went for an evening meal on Valentine's day. The pub is quite large. There is lots of seating in the front of the pub and upstairs by the bar. You have a menu at your table and once you have decided on the food, you have to go to the bar to order the food. Once the meal is ready a waiter brings the food to your table. We had Creamy Garlic Mushrooms on a ciabatta as one of the starters and Garlic Tiger Prawns (You could have Chilli Prawns). There were lots of Prawns - 8 or 9). For the Mains we both had Hunter's Chicken. The chicken was excellent and there was plenty of chicken topped with bacon and cheddar. The atmosphere is nice and relaxing and the food is excellent. The pub could have made an effort for Valentine's night such as a rose at every table or a candle - maybe for next year. Lastly, the pub has Vegetarian/Vegan food.

Very disappointed with our lunchtime meal. The roast potatoes were clearly warmed up, the parsnips burnt the dauphanoir potatoes had a hard skin on the top. Told the waitress who said she was sorry. No feedback when she reported it and no offer to compensate us in any way.

The NEW Defford Arms.......Food is excellent, Lasgne one of the best i have had, carvery always hot and fresh , range of beers and drinks to fair standard.If you are new to pub , there is no guidance as what to do to order food , either at table or bar.no one tells you where to go for carvery but its on display anyway,one member of staff on the bar to serve , if you can get her attention.no one to ask if we wanted sweets or extra drinks, actually except from ordering you have no verbal contact with staff.the main room has been neutrally decorated but no pictures or extra decoration , very bland , if not for the bar it would be like a doctors waiting room.But if you can put up with theses things then the food is way the beast thing abot the Defford Arms

We all enjoyed the food. Tasty and not overcooked. Very few options if you do not want a carvery on a Sunday. Too many tables for the space, and steps not great for the elderly, especially when you are sitting by the door and have to carry your carvery meal down them. Zero customer interaction from the staff in our experience. Customer expected to attend the bar for everything, business therefore missing out on selling any extra desserts, coffee etc. We only saw a staff member when they collected plates and chatting by the bar when I asked for the bill. Lacked information and signage for loos, mind the step, no loo roll holders. Small things but shows a general lack of attention to detail. I understand it is under new management so plenty of scope to improve.

Have been to this newly refurbished and newly changed hands establishment and have found it a delightful and busy place to go for a very nice carvery.

Noticed pub on a drive past, turned around and drove back to it as my wife had noticed advert for roast Carvery. 4pm Sunday and was reasonably busy. We got a table for 2 and enjoyed a really nice dinner with a lovely selection of meats and certainly more choice of vegetables and 3 different potatoes. We ordered cold drinks plus both needed a coffee. My black coffee arrived very quickly but we had to ask twice for my wife's coffee which the young lad said "oh yes sorry I forgot then still went to check if we had ordered it! Main point of only 4 stars was that during most of this 4 young staff stood behind the bar discussing rotas and shifts, instead of looking after their service users. Were very off putting, with being distracted from their discussions. Remember, punters pay pockets!

Been past but never been, our friends suggested here for after Christmas. We booked for 1pm but owner called to ask us if it was possible we could go a little earlier as they had had a booking for 60, not a problem. We turned up 10 mins before our table was booked the table for 60 had turned up an hour early. The table of 60 had decided to sit where ever they wanted even though the owner had set aside a room for them. Our table was taken The owner was lovely and asked the people to move to where they were supposed to be sitting, the owner was lovely and couldn't apologise enough. She even told us to go to the front of the queue for the carvery. The meal was lovely the beef was cooked to perfection it melted in your mouth. We will be definitely be going back and I couldn't recommend this place enough.

Took my folks to this place near where they live in Worcestershire. It seems it had recently been taken over (I am told) by the (previous?) owners of the Masons Arms. They had done a good job catering fo the Christmas lunchtime trade. Some good beers and a nice carvers as well as as a menu.

Its under new management and we went there for a carvery with some friends and since then they have been back several times and we are going there this coming week for our christmas do. We are all raving about how good the food is. It seems to be all freshly cooked and not dried up or anything. Can.'t fault it

First visit to this pub and we all had the carvery, it was superb! The pub is very clean, and the staff are pleasant and the food is excellent with a good selection on the general menu and an excellent carvery. We all have it 9/10 excellent!

Lunchtime carvery. Good and plenty of it. The new proprietors were welcoming and seemed interested in you.

I waited a long time to go back to the Arms under new ownership. The food was good. I had the carvery and there was a huge choice of veg and 3 meats. It was very filling but we just had to have a pud. They were large pieces and very good.Value for money. The staff were helpful and friendly.

We have been to the Defford Arms two weeks running for their Sunday carvery. Excellent food with four meats to choose from as well as numerous vegetables. Good atmosphere, good service. Well done Surita and Wilson and your lovely staff. See you soon.

We visited here with a group of friends and whilst the food was good the service was nonexistent.On arrival we were left to work out how the ordering system worked and sort it out ourselves.The woman behind the bar showed no interest in us at all and it was almost too much trouble.The chef behind the carvery was the exception,smiling and enthusiastic.No-one came to ask if we would like a sweet,we had to work out that system too.On the whole,not a pleasant experience and one we will not be in a hurry to repeat.

Went here for lunch last week lovely carvery calm surroundings and professional kind staff. Have visited before to be greeted by unpredictable owners and witnessed unusual behaviour towards ourselves and other visitors. Good luck to the new owners and keep up the good work.

We found out that the pub had recently been taken over by new owners, and were offering a carvery on a Sunday. I booked a week in advance as I'd heard it was extremely popular. It certainly didn't disappoint! We arrived about 30 minutes before our reserved time, knowing we would have to wait. However, 15 minutes later our table was ready. The choice of meats included turkey ham beef and pork. I couldn't decide what to have, so I had a bit of everything! The beef was slightly overcooked for my liking, but was still lovely and tender, as was the ham and pork. The turkey was beautifully moist and the Yorkshire pudding was crisp and fluffy. The choice of vegetables was staggering, and all freshly cooked. All the staff were amazing; they never stopped. Unfortunately I didn't have room for a pudding, but they looked delicious. We will definitely be going back.

The Defford Arms is now under new Management, what an improvement over the previous sad regime. We all had Car art and must say the standard of fare was excellent
