Deep Blue in Portsmouth

I think Deep Blue was great when it first opened and has just gone hugely downhill since. Today’s visit was the worst. Awful service as everyone mentions, just completely ignored, eventually found a QR code to order online, no one told me about that and I had to ask someone for our table number to complete the order! You have to create an account to order….i don’t want any account I just want to pay for my food! Food has gone downhill, chips aren’t as crisp, portions have shrunk (seem much smaller in restaurant than takeaway), fish was greasy and tartar sauce from a jar (not a good one) Service was non exsistent, no check of if we needed anything, no check on whether the food was ok, no offer of colouring for the kids, no plates cleared. You could forgive some of this if it was reasonably priced but paying £16 for fish and chips I expect better! Only good thing is the view

The food was realy lovely as it usualy is, however the service was awful today We were sat down and told some one will be with us shortly. 25 minutes later the man finaly took out order. Didnt ask what sides we required. I asked for a jug of water as i usualy do and a drink for my friend. We waited at least 20 minutes for the drinks which was a small glass of water no jug so i had to ask again for a jug of water. Another 20 mins till the food came out so an hour before we were sorted out . And it wasnt busy in there. No one came over to check if everything was ok and did we need anything else. Which they normally do. After we finished we sat chatting waiting to get the attention of any staff member to ask for coffee. Finaly the man came over took our order for 2 coffees and the wait began again. After what seemed like an eternity my friend said that it lets go they clearly forgot the coffee he must have heard cos he then made them and brought them over. We both agreed the service today was awful the staff seamed to be more interested in chatting to each other than There customers.

Shockingly small portion of chips, wouldn't even call it a child's portion. Won't Be ordering again. 😞

Had a very tasty seniors portion of fish and chips. There was a large fish with plenty of chips together with mushy peas and tartare sauce. This was exceptional value and I would definitely return if in the area again.

We are a family of 3 adults & 3 children, ordered halumi burgers, fish & chicken & mushroom pie with chips and mushy peas. The chips were barely warm, the burgers were tasteless, the fish had very thick, greasy batter, the chicken pie had one tiny piece of chicken, no mushroom and a grey slushy substance. Asked for some of the chips to be warmed up, we were met with indifference & told nobody complained due to their high standards of chef. None of us are fussy eaters but the food was the cheapest of frozen foods, absolutely dreadful. Would never spent nearly £80 at this place again.

Attitude of the staff is appalling! to wait 40 mins for a battered sausage and chips is ridiculous. Even asked them and they said "yes 5 mins" (it wasnt!!). It may be busy, it may be Friday night, but this is fast food! To then be given half portions of chips, while watching the chap add extra sauce and add a wink to people in front, is not ok. Rude. Bad food. Half portions make this massively overpriced. Never again.

whilst the food was very nice, we ordered a large cod which was actually smaller than the normal regular cod we ordered before, so won't be ordering that again, more than happy to post a picture of it, which was about 1.5 teaspoons in length, so feel a bit short changed 🤔

What a dreary affair that was! Pre booked a table which was not prepared on arrival. Ended up seating ourselves (why!? Why did we continue with the charade?) Everything on the menu is deep fried except for the pies (microwaved) and the salads which cost a tenner for a tiny bowl which was almost entirely red onion. Zero salad leaves. Their only saving grace is the kind staff. It's a chain. Go somewhere decent. This is not the one.

The chips were overcooked, some were burnt. A wrong pie was delivered. The cod was advertised as regular but small in comparison to other pieces of cod I have ordered. Overall the whole meal was quite expensive again comparing it to other restaurants. I will not be ordering again from Deep Blue.

The restaurant need to teach some of their employee about customer service and manners. One lady in particular is very rude, instead of apologising for her manners she argued or defended her behaviour , at first and second behaviour we let it go but the third behaviour is like a commanding queen telling us don’t talk unless you’re ask. After ordering take away she asked to wait outside even when we are just three customer at that time. What’s great with food when your customer service is terrible. Service is as important as the quality of food.

We arrived at 19.35 ( advertised closing time on the website is 20.00) to be told they had just closed. We were directed to another branch which they said was 10 minutes walk away ( it was more), and assured it would be open till 20.00, but this had also closed early. We were then directed to a 3rd outlet ( not DeepBlue) and told it would be open till 3am, but this was also closed. All in all a pretty poor effort.

Left a review on their page a week or so ago and leaving one on here too as I can’t stress enough how amazing the service can be and how good the food is. Visited earlier today and again was very pleased with everything.

Long waiting time. Scottish manager seemed very happy to serve justeat orders before people waiting in the shop. Challenged the manager and this seems to be general practice.

As always, Deep Blue does not disappoints ❤️ lovely food

Appallingly slow service, lost order, ridiculous prices. It took 30 mins to actually get a server to the table to order anything, they had a 30+ minute wait on food. We watched pretty much everyone else’s food (who ordered after us) arrive before ours. Nearly all our time at the beach was spent waiting here. The price for fish and chips was actually the same as the very nice Grill restaurant down the beach, where you can also enjoy cocktails and good service on the decking, so honestly don’t bother, just go there instead. When the food eventually arrived, it was everything you’d expect from Deep Blue: Overcooked, greasy fish. Cardboard, chewy chips. On the positive side, the toilets were not quite as disgusting as the public loos and only required light wading through puddled piss…

Our address is in the wrong location in your map meaning that the driver is sent to the wrong house each time.

Great fish and chips, that is quick and served with a smile. The team are always friendly and have time for a chat. Best fish and chips in Portsmouth.

Three orders of regular cod and chips. All pieces vastly different sizes, none freshly cooked ( tasted like left over from lunch service) and the chips were dire. It’s one thing if your spud supplier lets you down, it’s another if you chip them up anyway and serve them. Where’s the quality control? I’d say 30% were black and inedible. Service was friendly, but not enough to make up for really disappointing food.

That was awful one it wasn’t even a large portion of chips for a 6 pound that is a joke and two I had take half off them out because they was green and brown so I would like a full refund

For £20 ordering a reg cod and chips I get a small thin fish and counted 10 chips with in my box. I'm not happy with my order and deep blue you have lost a customer. This is disappointing and when ringing the store up to complain they said its nothing to do with them and can not fix their mistakes.

First of all, their takeaway was closed so we were forced to trek over to their grimey restaurant at the other end of the pier. Not only was there no accessibility ramps for my little sisters wheelchair but the staff were rude and aggressive when we asked if takeaway was available. Oh boy… if looks could kill, we would be six feet under. The chef behind the counter grunted for us to wait at the doors. He was practically foaming at the mouth. We didn’t even get to order. I was appalled at the customer service, so I wheeled my sister away from the door (they still never gave us a ramp), and we were on our way. Do not recommend. Abysmal!

Best fish and chips I've had in a long time. Arrived hot, curry sauce just perfect.

Fish bites more like batter bites. Next to no fish and way over cooked and I only asked for vinegar on the chips and they covered them with salt. Which meant I couldn’t eat the chips neither as I can have too much salt. Terrible service and food.

forgot half the order so only one of us got dinner. People need to start paying attention when it comes to just eat as they charge so much more for the comfort of home delivery, the service should be 5 star every time to respect how much more we users have to pay compared to in store prices

The location on the pier is really good. Decor is quite upmarket for fish and chips and very pleasant. The staff member was really pleasant too. Efficient and very friendly. It’s a nice place to be. The food is average. The fish and chips were cooked fresh and arrived hot. However, the cooking oil needed changing. The taste of old oil tainted the food - not hugely- but enough to be noticeable. We had puddings. They were OK. Traditional, served hot and cooked to order. It’s not cheap. If they sorted the cooking oil situation out, I’d go back because of the location and setting.

Delivery was great ordered on time very fast but the food was ridiculous for the price. There was about 20 chips for £6 and the £5 each sausages were just regular with barely any batter. The curry sauce as usual great. Phoned up to ask what on earth is going on with my order £23 and will be hungry after eating this and had no help from the man who answered. Wont be ordering again from deep blue which is a shame.

One star is for the sea view and manageress. We ordered scampi and large cod and chips. The scampi was OK, the cod was acceptable but batter hard. Chips were the worst we've ever had, anaemic, some soggy, others hard as if they'd used all the bad parts of the potatoes. Mushy peas were cold, no option for 'normal peas'. The manageress did offer to get new chips and peas but as we'd already waited nearly half an hour for our meals we declined. I noticed the 'chef' arriving about 15 minutes after our order was taken so why weren't we told there would be a delay? There was only one other table occupied and they'd already been served so no excuse. The manageress could see how much we'd left on our plates, apologised profusely and took the fish and chips off our bill. £13.89 for scampi and tartare sauce was ridiculous. The actual restaurant is light, airy and in a great location but needs a business who knows how to provide decent well-cooked food at a reasonable price.

Didn’t have the best experience last time I ordered from Deep Blue,but on a rainy Sunday afternoon I decided to give it another try.I can say I’m very glad I did.The portion size has definitely improved with a large chips easily enough for two people,the chips themselves were very nice fluffy and crispy.Top marks for the jumbo Battered sausage and fish cake as well.

Nine of us went for a birthday lunch. We all ordered different meals. Everyone enjoyed everything. The service was good. Very friendly helpful staff. I would advise you to dine here. It's so lovely right on the pier. We had a great time. Not cheap but definitely not overpriced for what we had. Really enjoyable

Order not complete freezing cold

We came into the restaurant on Sunday. The restaurant is very pretty and elegant but the bathrooms were not great. There was no soap and there was hair everywhere. It looked like it hadn’t been cleaned in ages. The restaurant was empty when we came, so we tried to order food quite quickly. There was only 1 waiter, so it was difficult to ask for anything because he had to run across the restaurant all by himself. All 5 of us ordered fish and chips but it took almost 1 hour to arrive despite the place being empty. We are quite disappointed with this experience as previously we had really enjoyed ourselves here.

We booked in advance ordered over 90 meals from Deep Blue in Eastney Road for a fund- raising event on Friday. From the beginning nothing was too much trouble, and Kelly the manager went out of her way to ensure that the food was delivered piping hot. Everybody at the event praised the food. Most had fish and chips, but a few had the burger and some the vegetarian pie. There was plenty of food and it was delivered in boxes with wooden forks and napkins, so we only had to supply the condiments. Everybody now wants to know when the next event will be. We would certain use Deep Blue in Eastney again.

Rubbish food, small portions, overpriced

Don’t get me wrong it’s tasty, it’s just VERY expensive for what you actually get. Like £5ish for a mediocre sausage & batter, like it was quite petit in size. £7 for cheesy chips or however much and you practically get a kids portion. Can spend £7 for sausage and chips and have left over and feel absolutely full elsewhere, yet £13 +£3 for delivery and service charge - £16 down and still hungry

Had fish and chips all round ... batter was soft and soggy, chips were soggy...: for the price and place was disappointing

We are a large family, we ordered 4 large chips however the company decided to place 3 of those chips in with our fish - there was no mention that each fish would have a large portion of chips touching each other in box’s. When we called the company they couldn’t care and said it wasn’t their fault, terrible customer service and bad food

We were one of the first to arrive. 2 large cod and chips + I wine and beer cost £47. The fish was really nice but in most chip shops I have been too it would class as a small piece of fish. However chips were disgusting. 1st lot seemed to be reheated. 2nd lot not fried enough and we’re dry. People behind also complained about the chips. Was really looking forward to this after being on a slimming world diet. We did complain and were offered free drinks

£9.99 for the tiniest cod, that was labelled as regular, but clearly kids size.. basically the size of a battered sausage.

We visited here looking for a lovely lunch by the sea after a busy morning and to our surprise it was very good! Everything in the main dining area was clean and looked very presentable. It was a nice addition to clearly see the chefs cooking the food: this shows that they are taking care in what they serve. The staff were friendly and the large haddock and chips was a very generous portion (I definitely recommend that). Prices were reasonable especially considering that you are dining in a restaurant and it is by the seaside. Ordering was made very convenient thanks to the QR codes placed on the tables which enable you to order and pay digitally. Overall a good experience and I will definitely return again sometime soon. I do recommend that you give this place a visit should you be in the area.

chips were not very good almost uneatable not worth the money

Hi very disappointed two of our fish was just batter and fish was very dry couldn’t eat it I had two friends for lunch and I recommended your shop because I have used before and was very nice so you can see I was very embarrassed

excellent food , but very expensive

Ordered 2 large battered sausage chips and curry sauce. First disappointment, no curry sauce. Get them home and the chips are pale soggy and undercooked. Definitely not worth £10. They used to be the nicest chippy in Portsmouth but won’t be using Deep Blue again.

Fish and chip’s excellent, but it was dissatisfying that the Vinegar in a Sarsons bottle was a cheap replacement !!! This a type of Fraud and needs to be reported to the trading standards!

I seem to recall leaving a review for deep blue a couple of years ago. This was a regular stop for us for fish and chips during summer months, this was our first visit this year and what a suprise to find that things have deteriorated I had small fish and chips, good portions as always but the fish I gave to the seagulls on Southsea sea front the batter was so greasy and crispy I could have drained it and used it in my car, what little fish was inside the batter was in a sorry state and looked (and tasted) as bad as it looked I was told it was the last bit of fish just not sure if the server meant from yesterday. Will give this another visit in the near future based on previous visits and the quality of the fish and chips, but on this performance, if it turns out to be the same, I won't be back.

Exactly what you’d expect, a good portion of chips and a lovey piece of fish. Service was pleasant and fast. Chris was polite and we only waited a couple minutes. Cod was fresh and wasn’t oily/ greasy at all.

We always really enjoy lunch here. Friendly staff, freshly cooked food and great views! Even open in rubbish weather - a good place to shelter and warm up.

Order of 2 x battered sausage and a large chips. So below the expected quality of Deep Blue, it’s almost like it came from a different shop; batter on sausages was think and cakey, sausage had a strange cardboard taste, chips were both undercooked and overcooked are the same time, and clearly were not fresh. I thought you were issuing delivery codes to confirm to the driver they had delivered to the correct address…..This is important and a significant improvement……not only for customers but to cut down on your costs for wrong deliveries…….

The fish was nice but very greasy with mostly hard batter. The chips were mushy but again tasted good. Most items were out of stock which was bad for a Friday evening!

Not blaming the driver though, she was lovely.

I visited here around 1400 on 26 Jun (we were the only people in the queue so it was not busy) with my family. Out of 3 orders, we made, the first was fine and came out within a few minutes. The second was over...

Met by a lovely young lady, who let us choose our table. We had cod and chips. Was lovely especially the chips, like homemade. Offered sauces. Toilet were very clean. Will definitely return.

All chips from kids meal had a really bad taste. Fish tasted weird.

The food was very expensive for the amount provided. The chips were quite dry and the jumbo sausage was not my idea of jumbo. Too much packaging. A huge box for a standard size of chips and an enormous bag for three items. I will not be ordering from them again.
