The restaurant as part of the hotel is in an ideal location within the shadow of York Minster. We booked a 2 course meal through Travel Zoo and we were not disappointed. The food and the service ( thank you Alison), were excellent. I can particularly recommend the smoked haddock chowder which was quite simply the best I've ever tasted! I had scampi for the main course which was lovely and the good sized portion meant that there was no room for dessert. All washed down with a really nice bottle of Pinot Grigio means that next time in York I think we'll be back.

We enter and asked for meals in the middle of the day, we were visiting some Pub but kitchen Pubs were closed. We were surprised for the very nice and charm environment in DCH restaurant, we asked for the traditional fish and chips with salads as sides and they were great. A place very good in front of York Ministry.

As a resident of York some friends and I decided to book afternoon tea, we did this on line and arrived at 14 00pm, it took awhile for a staff member to appear and they had no record of our booking. We were asked to wait and a table was prepared, we sat in window seat over looking Minster as there was a parade on Our order was taken and it arrived, three tier cake stand, for myself, three sandwiches of egg, salmon, ham The next tier one scone thick cream and jam , no butter The top tier two small shot glasses with strawberry moose and four very small cakes Pot of Earl grey tea for two No garnish, no table cloth, no small bowl of crisps, no sense of occasion I ordered another tier, but this did not arrive and we saw the waiter riding off on his bike, no hand over The extra tea and extra crisp arrived finally The bill including a glass of wine 80 pound! Poor service, no checks on us, we were the only ones in having tea and I am not surprised Will not go again despite location, four star hotel maybe but one star for afternoon tea

We had Sunday lunch. The main courses (beef and fish) were fine although the mustard sauce rather swamped the fish. The vegetables were cooked well. The pudding were a disappointment - rather bland and lacking in flavour. The views towards the Minster and St Michael le Belfry are very attractive and the crowds milling about kept us entertained while we waited for our food. The staff were not intrusive but, on the other hand, not readily accessible when we wanted them.

This restaurant is located in the Dean's Court hotel, and since we were staying there we used them, once for dinner when we had just arrived and were tired of travelling, twice for breakfast.Service--not only competent, but they remembered us after the first visit and offered our table with the great view again. On our first night we both got bangers and mash--and after trying the dish elsewhere and having tried to do it at home, I now think I know what a good version tastes like. The breakfasts were superb. You get to your table and request your beverage, order your main, then you may opt to make your way to the small buffeet where you'll find cold cereals, fresh fruit, and some very tasty yogurt cups servee in little glass mugs. The buffet will set your mood nicely for the great dish that's to follow. I had the eggs royale (like benedict only with salmon) and it was ideal. You may opt for a full English fry-up or lighter fare. It's worth dining here even if you're not a hotel guest.

Gutted was my experience. Could have cried. Booked an afternoon tea for my friends special birthday after checking previous reviews which seemed great. The place was empty tables in poor condition . In fact we were the only ones in the whole resturant. The plates and teapots looked like they had had them since the 70s. The cakes and sandwiches had been thrown together my child could have and has done better. The young lady that served us was lovely and gave us a extra glass of bubbles and just explained this was Dean Courts afternoon tea. Really !!!. This really needs to be addressed as it utterly and totally ruined our day. S. Very unhappy £60 wasted

Booked lunch two weeks in advance for a meal with friends. Arrived 10 to 15 minutes late and it almost seemed as if we were then on the wrong foot. Poor table given at the entrance to the restaurant; waited one hour for food and after two bread rolls given initially, had to keep asking for more - we were a table of four. Obviously they must have been in short supply! My wife had been at the hotel years ago and rated it highly but sorry we will not return. Staff were friendly.

How this hotel can advertise a ‘party night’ is a disgrace! Firstly, the Christmas meal served first was okay, although not many vegetables. However, we were escorted to our party room down stairs in a basement which was the size of a lounge (tiny) with a couple of tables and a small dance floor. Seeing there was 14 in our party and other similar sized groups there as well, there was no way we could all fit inside the room and we had no choice as to leave the room and sit back upstairs with no music. It was very disappointing to say the least and definitely spoiled our celebrations. This should not have been sold as a party package!

I must say firstly with respect, that the meal we had was very nice, albeit a bit short on vegetables (three dishes between fourteen diners?) at the service of the main meal, until we asked for some more and they duly obliged. Lovely staff, generous with their attention but, as far as the morning start was concerned, let down by poor training. A good breakfast should showcase the quality of the hotel and could also do the same thing for local produce. Good enough ingredients and presentation let down by a neglected fried egg and carelessly prepared tomatoes. This may seem banal criticism, but such details will certainly influence choice of restaurants later in the day - and there is certainly an abundance of choice in the city. I should never have been served thin, luke-warm coffee at breakfast. One day I will stay in an hotel where I am automatically offered heated milk to accompany my coffee.

It is a little while since we last went to The Dean Court restaurant for lunch and since then it has had a revamp. Now there is modern furniture replacing the more elegant tables and chairs with starched white tablecloths. Not particularly an improvement. There was the sound of men working and sawing to accompany us. Our waiter greeted us cordially, seated us at a corner window, with views of the Minster, gave us our menus and disappeared. We waited and waited and waited. Meanwhile the one other person in the restaurant was joined by a friend and a waitress came to take their order. We indicated that we were ready to order and she took the order. The starter and main courses were excellent, but the dessert when it arrived was not what I had ordered and had to be changed. In all, it took one and three quarters hours for our lunch. The food we had was lovely, but the service very slow, even though the restaurant was very quiet. I have marked the cleanliness down because the wood at each side of the window was splattered with what looked like food.

The Dean Court has modernised its interior and made dining more relaxed and casual. Gone are the starched table cloths, in are wooden floors and light furniture. The lunch menu is good value, the evening menu a little more expensive but still interesting and well priced. A decent wine list going through the prices with plenty at the affordable end and a little different. Food is well cooked and the menu has variety. Service is friendly but a little inexperienced or at times too casual. There is enthusiasm and some expertise. Overall, a decent meal at a reasonable price and (ask for the right tables) with a great view of the Minster.

Came here for my wife’s work xmas do. Lived in york for many years and never actually came here before. The service initially was fine, until we got sat down at the table, then it was very rough, with lots of interruptions, being leant over or knocked as they reached for dishes, or tried to replace cutlery. Not really what I would have expected. They had got my order wrong and I promptly corrected it. The apple and celeriac soup was very sweet, with a note of sourness but quite odd really. Smooth and hot was probably the best I could say about it. The main course was a vegetarian suet pudding served with roasted potatoes, a creamy leek sauce and then accompanying veg for the table. The veg were cooked well but under-seasoned. The leek sauce was excellent and there was a lot of it, but actually not really anything to eat it with. There was about 6 half new potatoes which were tasty and a suet pudding not much larger. Again the pudding was tasty, but hilariously seemed to contain the same veg as was served with the meal, which really lacked any imagination or wow factor. The chocolate cheesecake was fine to finish. Probably the highlight of the meal. Not sure what the hotel is like to stay in, but certainly won’t be rushing back for the food or service.

We booked a last minute afternoon tea as a family whilst recently visiting York. The staff were kind and friendly, we had our own little area, the sandwiches were fresh and it was great value. It's the second time we've had afternoon tea here and I forgot to leave a review last time. All in all, great value for money.

Myself and some elderly friends called in to get out of the cold as it was a bitter afternoon. We were in all truth killing time before going to evensong at York Minster. Two of my friends have mobility issues and the staff could not have been more helpful in accommodating them. We had coffee and brandy and a warm up (and free mince pies!) before heading off to The Minster - a perfect location. The staff were excellent as was the service - good service should be commented on and that was certainly true for us. As for the coffee and the brandy, they were fine too, but the staff was what made it a 5 visit here.

The lunch we had here was disappointing. In particular the black pudding dish was only tepid and lacked taste, the ox-cheek was over salted, and the steak very tough. The staff were friendly, but the wine service was totally chaotic. It is such a shame because the dinning room is in such a wonderful location right next to the Minster.

Finding myself on a few days away,no staycation would be complete without an afternoon tea,and after some research,we decided to try the Afternoon tea by gum,at the Dean court hotel. We arrived at appointed time(had popped in earlier to book, staff friendly and helpful) and were shown to a cosy alcove (all dark wood, tiles, mirrors and very comfy leather chairs)very chic, modern but not unwelcoming in any way.Our order was taken by a lovely waiter, and the Yorkshire tea arrived promptly,in a large teapot(always good). The crockery and cutlery were attractive, and did justice to a very good brew!Next came the taster plate of Whitby crab bon bon(delicious)York ham hock(tasty )and goats cheese cone(creamy and very morish)along with this was a delightful miniature bottle of ginger beer that was very refreshing! This was then followed by a cake stand holding, sandwiches (good, but not exciting),Yorkshire mess(delicious soft fruit, meringue, cream,in small glass, very pretty),very good!several small cakes,(all tasty, rich and delicious!)Last but to me most importantly in an afternoon tea, the"scone".I was most disappointed in this,as it looked lovely, but lacked in taste and was abit on the dry side. Please sort your scones out, they need to be the crowning glory on the plate!A very pleasant afternoon was enjoyed, with lashings of tea, friendly service, good food, plenty of it(£20 per head was good value) and fabulous toilets!(I dodgy lavatory on any outing is a real spoiler for me,so 10/10 for these ones!My only thoughts would be,ditch the sandwiches and add a few more taster items? (There is a traditional afternoon tea available on the menu already)I would definitely return to the hotel, for another afternoon of relaxation in a lovely location, with fabulous wc's!

As usual the food for 7 of us was very good but jnfortuately myself and another lady order the pork (I had previously had this dish and enjoyed) but unfortunately this time it was very very disappointing, it must have been sitting on the side waiting to be served and was very dry. I also had the ham hock which proved to be very griztly. Most u usual for the Dean court.

My friends and I spent a lovely bank holiday Monday having afternoon tea at the Dean Court Hotel. What an amazing position in York with fabulous views of the Minster. We went all out and had the champagne supplement which made our whole experience go with a swing ! The first thing bought out was a type of amuse-bouche with hock ham and crab cake - delightful! The sandwiches were varied and interesting and the selection of cakes a great choice to appeal to all. Free flowing tea and coffee made the experience very relaxed and we didn't feel rushed after eating. The manager Simon was a very jovial, jolly charachter who was very attentive which was nice as we weren't even staying in the hotel ! I would definately return when next in York !

I was a little concerned as I had prearranged this meal some weeks previously, as it was a retirement meal with my partner and line manager, paid for ( to a certain limit) by the company. It happened to be the hottest day so far this year! No problems, the restaurant has air conditioning and was wonderfully cool. The staff were friendly and efficient (we were the only table to start as it was a Monday), and the food well presented and enjoyed! We chose from the 3 courses from £30, but be aware some dishes have a supplementary charge, and sides to the main course are also extra. However, I'm not complaining about the price, someone else paid the bulk of it! As a "hearty eating" person I found some courses a little bit "minimalist", but on the whole it was an enjoyable evening in a great setting (Minster views)- and that air conditioning- wonderful!

My husband and I ate here early on a Saturday evening. As we were the first to arrive, the courteous Gery immediately took us to the best table - a circular one right on the corner with a beautiful view of the minster opposite. The menu presented to us was '3 courses for £30' which suited us fine. We had booked with a Groupon which I'd purchased for £40 for 2 so this, was great value. There were numerous options available. We chose the scallops (£3.50 supplement) and terrine to start with and the pork 3 ways and salmon for main. For dessert we chose creme brulee with shortbread (£3.50 supplement) and apple tart. We chose a bottle of pinot grigio to have with dinner. All was very good - nicely cooked and presented and although nothing spectacular, we were impressed by the quality of food for the price - even at the menu price. We were served by Gery, Raluca and Alison who were all very friendly and courteous. The one thing we really liked us that they did not come to top our wine up during the meal. Personally I find it very rude and intrusive, as well as a ploy to get customers to drink and order more wine when restaurant staff do this, so it was a refreshing change to be left to pour our own wine. The restaurant became busier as we left at around 8pm. Overall, a nice option to with great views. We'd certainly consider another visit here the next time we are in York.

Firstly can I say that after 50 years of business and personal travel this is only my second posting on a review site of any kind. We have been Saturday night regulars at the Dean Court Hotel restaurant (under various different names) since we moved to York in 1993.Tonight we called in to an empty restaurant to be told that all the window seats were reserved (ok, so that's my fault for not booking). We ordered 2 courses each whereby my wife ordered a Shallot Tarte Tartin as a starter. The dish was supposed to be based on Goats Cheese but only contained one small cube of around half a centimetre of the stuff. At 7 quid a time I thought this was a bit cheeky so I mention it to the waitress. The message we got back from the kitchen was "We will see if we can do better next time" (err, when exactly is that likely to be?),We left the restaurant 90 minutes later, and to no-ones surprise, all the premium seats were still empty. My message to you readers is this - If we cannot get any kind of decent service as a locals after 24 years of loyalty, what chance do you tourists have??? Good luck to you all, but there are many better places to eat within 2 minutes walk.

Went for 2 course lunch with voucher, 3rd visit to this restaurant. Please to see lamb and sticky toffee pudding on the menu. However slightly disappointing this time. Jus or gravy whichever name they want to give it lacked the flavour it had last time, watered down? Perhaps it was because we were last diners. Extra toffee sauce with sticky toffee pudding was needed as pudding was very dry and slightly burnt round the edges. Licorice ice cream delicious. Would not put me off eating there again but would be last chance.

Having received a voucher as a gift we went along for lunch and took our son and daughter along with us.The menu although limited still provided enough choice for most and they also had a children's menu available also.We had the Lamb and the Plaice, both dishes were delicious and presented excellently. My daughter had the sausage, chips and peas and a note I would make on this is the amount of salt already on the fries (although to my personal taste, I don't think the amount on a children's meal is appropriate)We also ordered a children's fruit sundae, it contained grapes which was fine, but again as a children's dish i would suggest the grapes are halved due to the choking hazard they pose to children. For desserts we had the Sticky Toffee Pudding and Lemon Tart again both dishes were lovely. Unfortunately we also ordered a Latte to accompany the desserts but this never arrived, but it also hadn't been added to the bill, so we didn't make a fuss about it.Overly a lovely lunch and would recommend to others, just a couple of points for which they can improve.

My parents used to love going to the Dean Court for Sunday lunch and so my sister and I decided to return there last weekend, having both moved away from York many years ago. I had some initial reservations as the menu on their website, as it stands, looked worryingly restrictive and rather dull, and does them no favours, but please don't be put off. We had outstanding roast beef, crispy Yorkshires, roast potatoes, perfectly cooked vegetables and delicious gravy. I opted for a rhubarb based pudding which was again deliciously light and perfectly executed. Sadly, the restaurant was rather quiet and in need of a few more diners to give the place the buzz it needs to compliment the meal, but York is relatively quiet at the present time, thankfully for us and no doubt this will change. You cannot fault either the food or the service and we will return. The chef certainly knows what he is doing.

To keep it simple: food was good (to be honest: rather, what you would expect for this price), service was close to unacceptable. Interestingly, the bad service evaluation is entirely attributable to the maître d'hôtel, who behaves as if running a five star superior hotel (I've been to many five star superior hotels around the world, but I've never faced this level of arrogance before...). Although the restaurant was almost empty, he didn't treat us with respect. His assistants were rather decent, I think they can give him a lecture about how to treat customers... For example, after having had a glass of wine I asked if I could share the second one with my partner. The assistant said that this is not a problem. However, later I overheard how he instructed the assistant to deal with requests and "people like this" next time. He didn't treat us with any respect and decency. That's just one example out of many I could provide. To summarize this restaurant: much ado about nothing...

Me and my friend came here for an evening meal, we had our jackets taken for us and got to choose a beautiful seat by the window with a vue of the minster. The menu was small and easy to order from (I prefer a smaller menu). We were given warm bread with a choice of white or brown and starters came in a timely fashion. I had the shallot tarte tatin and my friend had beetroot cured sea trout, we bit enjoyed them. For mains we had monkfish and fillet of bream. The monkfish was cooked very well and very flaky, the bream again was cooked lovely with the crispy skin and the fish still moist. Deserts were a full cheese board, great cheeses and a nice oat biscuit and chutney to accompany. The service was great and all the staff were friendly and looked after us well. I would defiantly recommend to friends and family and will be visiting again. Thank you for the great service.

The hotel itself and the bedroom are clean and tidy. A nice hotel. Our problem was the restaurant. We booked for lunch and had no problem being sat at the right time. We ordered drinks that took ages to arrive. When they did, the waitress poured 2 glasses of prosecco all over my wife. An accident.... no problem...... an apology..... nope! They were more bothered about the mess on the floor. The hotel wouldn't let us check in till 2pm so my wife had to borrow a top from a family member. Only 1 replacement drink was brought out and they claimed only 1 had been spilt. Quickly getting another when we pointed out we ordered 2 prosecco's and there were no glasses on the table! They then left us for 30 minutes before taking our food order. We had to go and find someone to ask...... the response was "sorry but we had 5 more groups just come in and are quite busy". To be fair the food was nice but one of our party was missing something from his order and when he questioned it they looked at him as if it wasn't meant to and they said she would "check", promptly coming back with the missing item. More drinks were ordered but we were missing one.... took another 15 minutes to arrive..... they were all out of cucumber and needed to go out and get some! Lol! No apologies, no free prosecco...... not even a discount. Quite disgusted with the service all in all. Very poor.

The Exhibition is a grand old pub dating from 1702 that is situated on a very busy junction opposite Bootham Bar in York. As you enter up the steep couple of steps you are greeted by dark and atmospheric front room which is split by the central bar, it's a mish mash of Victorian and Art Deco with every single bit of wall space occupied with old photos, paintings, brasses and other Breweriana. There are wood panels, glowing yellow lighting and rich dark red ceiling which envelops you into the cosy space. There's so much to take in, especially the Art Deco stained glass panels and large fireplace, you'd almost be distracted from the offerings behind the bar. Which are not the most exciting but there's at least usually a couple of beers from Brew York, Black Sheep and Timothy Taylors, all priced at the usual City centre prices. Where The Exhibition really excels is it's outside space, if you follow your way around to the back of the bar and down a fairy light lit corridor it opens out first into a large conservator which is used for group bookings and then out into what is clearly the biggest and best Beer Garden in York! A beautifully secluded long yard with mature plants and great vintage wall art throughout. The only slight let down is the rather Victorian toilets which could probably do with a bit of an update but otherwise this is a very much overlooked pub that is superb in Summer and would be nice and welcoming inside any time of the year.

He disfrutado mucho de mi cena aquí, está situado en Churchill Hotel, todo muy acogedor, y hay una gran ventana con vistas a un pequeño jardín trasero, eso es precioso.
