It’s a lovely hotel overall but the room was swelteringly hot. It was so unbearable neither of us slept well. I’ve noticed quite a few reviews have mentioned this, one even citing our room (122), so it really odd something the management needs to address.

My mother and I visited for afternoon tea in the Conservatory during a heatwave. We were seated by someone with a bad attitude who looked like they rolled out of bed after a heavy night out. We were directed to a window table and were told we could move should it be too hot. We accepted the chance to move as it was far too hot seated in the window. Our server fumbled around moving the cutlery and crockery, one item dropped on the floor, a further 2 items dropped in front of me at the table. We opted not to have salmon sandwiches and welcome a tuna or prawn option, only to be given another ham. That’s 1 cucumber and 2 ham sandwiches, not good considering the price. We waited approx 30 mins for the food to arrive, the server noted our drinks still hadn’t arrived and apologised. A further 10 mins passed and the drinks finally arrived. Not good on a hot day. We weren’t checked on at all during our meal. All staff made every effort not to make eye contact. Our plates were not cleared when we finished, nor were we asked if everything was okay. 20 minutes passed with no staff in sight. I got fed up and we opted to leave. Thinking this was okay as I had booked using a gifted voucher. I was called later that evening by the server asking if I had paid for our visit! The cheek! Had they bothered to be present we wouldn’t have just upped and left, it turns out they needed a voucher code from me. Staff were unkept and scruffy, our server even had holes in her tights. Would not visit again.

I booked a family lunch at The Hydro to celebrate my mother's birthday. Everything was amazing and helped in creating precious memories. The staff were so friendly, attentive and professional, nothing was too much trouble. The table looked beautiful , the food was great and the pianist in the restaurant added to the lovely atmosphere and was happy to meet a request to play Happy Birthday. It was all perfect and a really enjoyable occasion for all. A week later my mother is still talking about it!

We were having coffee at The Hydro Hotel with a friend the other day and noticed that there was a Swing/Jazz Luncheon with Tom Fitzpatrick so decided to book it for the 3 of us. We are so pleased we did! From start to finish it was very well organised. We had to pre-order our food which obviously made sense for the kitchen and it was very slick how easily and efficiently each table's guests were served their various courses. All 3 of us were very pleased with our selection, and the food was delicious and beautifully presented. All of the staff were very attentive, efficient and friendly, and it was lovely to see many familiar faces from previous visits to the hotel amongst them. As part of the deal, a glass of wine (or soft drink) was included and this was served to us by Hannah which was a real treat for us as it's always great to interact with her. Tom Fitzpatrick was very good, had everybody singing along and we had a very enjoyable lunchtime. We even managed some dancing! We thought it was excellent value for money and look forward to coming back again for another event later in the year. Thanks to everybody at The Hydro for another lovely afternoon.

Good hotel, good hotel just outside of the city center in Eastbourne. Approx. 15 minutes walk. Very friendly staff. Wit had a spacious 2 bed room. The bathroom was good. But the fittings need to be refreshed in the future. But everything was very great and well maintained. As is often the case, breakfast has to be booked separately. And at £19 per person it's not exactly cheap. The afternoon tea at the Hydro is recommended. This is how you experience English culture.

Overall, it was.... fine. I would say it is a good three star hotel. Certainly didn't feel like a 4 star hotel. E.g. no robes, wouldn't let us take a bottle opener to our room, the steak was grissly and the sauce was basically water (when we noted this to the staff we never heard back), we had issues with our bath tap, no shower caps, no water glasses etc etc. The furnishings in the foyer and lounge area generally are very worn down looking and sad and the place can generally do with a renovation. Eastborne is known for its picturesque walks and when we asked the staff at the front desk for any tips for a 3 hour ish walk she said she didn't have an answer for us, giggled, and said she was the wrong person to ask as she didn't like walks. Here I was thinking she would be the right person to ask at the front desk of a 4 star hotel next to famous walking spots... silly me.

Met with friends for morning coffee and potentially light lunch at The Hydro last week and whilst the venue is very nice with views of the sea overall bitterly disappointed. Bacon sandwich ordered by friend served in what was obviously very very cheap white thin sliced bread, little or no butter/spread, bacon was apparently very salty and alot of fat on - didn't look at all appealing. I ordered a pot of tea (as couldn't be offered oat milk with coffee) and a toasted teacake which was served stone cold and completely tasteless and other friend had a coffee with a packet of 2 small ordinary biscuits. Friend did speak to Manager re: sandwich and he did take off the bill whilst pointing out he had not had any other complaints regarding foresaid. I concluded we all have different expectations and mine would be that for a 4 star hotel with a good reputation the quality of the food would be much higher, if not artisan bread at least a 'top' of the range supermarket brand but not a value range when paying £8.75. Likewise with the teacake - even Sainsburys/Tesco own brand better than what was served (£4.25) and 2 biscuits for £2.20. I regularly go out for morning coffee, lunch, afternoon tea and can honestly say there are lots of other nice places that serve much nicer fare and for a lot less £ Needless to say we didn't go on to order lunch and won't be returning customers.

Beware if you book this hotel if they have any functions on. Booked a (special to us)weekend here to celebrate our 50th Wedding Anniversary as we had spent our Honeymoon here only to be told on the Saturday that we could not eat in the Crystal Dining room as it was party night! and would have to eat in the conservatory, and not at a time of our choice. Whilst this is nice for daytime lunch, being a very special occasion for us we wanted to eat in the main dining room. We were not notified when we booked or on the couple of occasions l had to ring to confirm things as my husband is disabled and l did explain how special this was to us. ( The general staff were very helpful towards us). Moral of this story is the individual bookings are obviously not as important as the big party bookings!

Went with a group of ladies for our annual Christmas lunch, we also went here in 2021. Last year was fine, but this year was not! The dining room was cold, there seemed to be cold air coming across our backs, and my feet were numb with cold. We were at the same hotel two weeks ago for a wake in the Garden Room, which was also freezing, and we needed to keep our coats on. I do feel for a 4* hotel this is not acceptable. The Christmas lunch was also very disappointing, the food was barely warm, the only hot part of my meal was the hot cup of tea at the end of the meal. I will not be going there again for any meal, coffee morning, or celebration, all very poor.

Husband and I went with friends; we're vegetarian (not vegan). The only veggie option on the menu was a nasty vegan effort--half of a tough aubergine, undercooked and unflavoured, with a couple of tiny bits of non-fresh-tasting potato and about six tiny pieces of green beans. No protein, no flavour, no skill in preparation. We struggled through it but it certainly wasn't worth the £60 bill (and we didn't have alcohol). The building and interior are gorgeous--like a Poirot film set--but the bad food means we won't be going back.

We were very disappointed overall. Two of us ordered cod & chips; the batter on the fish looked good, but was hard & chewy to eat & there were no vegetables (even just peas / mushy peas would have been good). The 'home made' pizza was very thick & soggy, my dessert (steamed sponge & custard) was dry / tasteless with tepid custard. The hake & duck ordered was apparently tasty (the only meals out of the 6). The gluten free cake was expensive for just a tiny Mr Kipling type cake) - as was the ice cream at £6.50! One of the waiters wore his face mask under his nose the whole time despite us mentioning it is not effective like that. Unfortunately I would not recommend the restaurant. It's a shame as the views are wonderful & the location is great for a stroll along the beach afterwards 😒

A timeless restaurant located in the Hydro Hotel. 5 star service and cuisine. Highly recommended if you are staying in Eastbourne.

C. T. Williams Otford Sevenoaks Kent

We live locally and often visit seafront hotels for tea. The Hydro is lovely. We sat in the gardens looking out over the sea. I had a wonderful, delicious, fresh, warm scone with jam, and tea. There was a cover to protect the food from the seagulls. Husband had a beer. The waiters were young and got everyone’s orders muddled up, which loses a point. Another point is lost to the tea, which was AWFUL. Cold, grey, not made with boiling water and it left a scum in the cup like that you get with coffee made with hot milk. Ugh. The point of going out for tea was rather lost. Beautiful place to sit though.

We have known the Hydro for about 30 years, not much has changed - good, that's why we go there. Sunday lunch is a return to days of white linen and silver service, and a general reminder of days past. Possibly not for the hungry, presentation comes before quantity - and in an age of carveries and obesity, jolly nice too.

So sad to write this as we have all loved going to lunch / dinner at the Hydro Hotel restaurant/ conservatory for years. We went for lunch on 27 June for my dad’s 86th birthday and although lunch was ok service was not great! I cannot believe our experience on 26 July my sandwich was served with moulding bread, we were unable to eat the chips as they were drenched in salt, we later found out that the 3 children’s meals had also been drenched in salt, we waited almost an hour to get 3 children’s ice creams this is appalling for a 4 star hotel! We waited ages for our table to be cleared during courses and even longer to get drinks and all of this is surprising considering the number of staff just hanging around by the bar area chatting! The staff working I would say at best were school children on work experience who didn’t know what they were doing and certainly not to the standard of a 4 star establishment! Definitely will not be going back any time soon!

Highly recommend the Perch in Eastbourne! The food was great, the place was very clean and the staff were very friendly. I’d like to give credit where its due- Our table was served by a lady called Rosie and honestly, I can’t remember the last time I went somewhere and received such wonderful service. She was very cheerful and couldn’t do enough for us- it was so refreshing, so thank you!! I’ve already promised her we’ll be back and am very much looking forward to the next time already

Do not confuse this cafe with OLD TOWN CAFE which is about 100yds west in Church St. A cafe but with training facilities for disabled adults.

Fair food for the price, but downright poor service - abrupt, cold and indifferent.

Great cafe, excellent customer service, very friendly. I had a bacon and egg sandwich 🥪, mug of tea whilst waiting for my car. Definitely will be going back when I'm in Eastbourne again. Thanks 👍
