Came to the bakery for lunch, we keep coming back in spite of many disappointing visits. This time we ordered Coronation Chicken sandwiches, sausage rolls, chips and coffee. Chips OK, coffee good, sausage rolls extremely cold and as hard as a brick (went home to the dogs), bread for the sandwich completely stale and hard round the edges so we left it and hardly any chicken in the filling. So disappointing once again, we had already paid. When we spoke to the Manageress she was very apologetic and offered us coffee and cake. Come on C and G we so want you to be good!

Just stayed in the Crown and Garter over the weekend. Lovely village pub! Rooms very comfortable and set around a fabulous courtyard where you could sit out and have a drink and enjoy the peace and tranquility. Great landscaping! We and our friends had breakfast and ate dinner in the restaurant both days. Fabulous food, really enjoyed everything and would highly recommend. A particular shout out to the young waiting staff who were polite, approachable, attentive and professional. All in all an extremely enjoyable stay, thank you!

Just come back from a fantastic weekend away with friends staying 2 nights at the Crown & Garter. Would highly recommend this place we couldn’t fault a thing! Great room, lovely big bed nice and quiet, great bathroom and walk in shower. Food was excellent. Lovely decor and very clean throughout the pub/hotel. Alana and all the staff were polite, friendly and we couldn’t fault their level of service. We’ve stayed before last year and will certainly come back again. Thank you from rooms 7 & 8 for helping towards a great weekend

Friendly staff, except for what appears to be the boss lady who may have been having a bad day 🤷♂️, in a lovely location. Very small portions of food and the tiny piece of monk fish still had the sinew attached. We had a variety of dishes between us and the only one that anyone really enjoyed was the burger and chips so not really a good food restaurant, more like a fast food place in a great location

First impression a pretty country location with great views. On arrival staff were helpful and extremely friendly. We had booked a 1 night stay with a set Valentine menu. Relaxing drinks in the bar before dinner then into the dining area. The food was exceptional as was the entertainment, Adan Winslet, Jazz and Swing highly recommend going to one of his performances here. Our beautiful room was a very high standard with everything we needed.

Not a regular at the pub. The staff were really not that friendly. To be blunt found them quite stuck up. A smile would be great. The food average. Presentation was excellent. However the crispy rabbit was really bland, Devon crab cake over salty. Didn't taste the Fricasse but my burger was juicy but the cheese used was over powering and the brioche bun slightly stale. Not somewhere I would rush back to despite the gorgeous setting

I urge you to try the Crown & Garter. A two night stay for four people on business resulted in probably the most relaxing end of each day we have experienced anywhere. Lovely, comfortable clean rooms in a country setting, friendly and easy going staff….it would appear that nothing is too much trouble. The food is beautiful to look at and the taste is equally so. Working away from home is boring, but, as we all agreed, finding a lovely place is a rare thing and we will return with our partners for a relaxing play weekend. Our thanks to Vladimir, Paul, Jamie and Rebecca…we all now know how to make a proper Irish Coffee. Paul the food was magnificent!

We were staying at the pub so decided to have a meal. Was a Tuesday evening and we had booked for 7:30pm. When we got there almost every table was full and there were a lot of grumpy faces. I'm vegetarian so chose the single option available to me which was prima Vera risotto. My partner liked the sound of it so she had the same. Suffice to say it was not what I would call a risotto. As you can see from the picture it looked like it had been part cooked and then just had water added to it. The rice was dintegrating and it was a watery mess. Really disappointing as the atmosphere was pleasant. No one asked whether all was OK with our meal so never got to provide any feedback. Other people in the restaurant had been waiting for over an hour. Obviously the kitchen staff were up against it because everyone had been booked on at the same time but this shouldn't have come as a surprise and frankly no-one with even a modicum of culinary training should have sent out our meals looking like that. I also thought it unfair that they left it to the front of house staff to take the flack. Wouldn't recommend.

It’s a rare thing when a pub with a fancy menu delivers food that lives up to all the hype, but the Crown and Garter has certainly cracked it... I had braised ox cheek with salt roasted celeriac which were both utterly tender and delicious, followed by the ubiquitous ‘Sticky Toffee Pudding’ which was delightful moist on the inside and sticky/chewy/crispy on the outside - one of the best I’ve tried....and I’ve sampled a few!! Looking forward to breakfast in the morning... and yes, the room is perfectly lovely!!

A friend and I were very excited to get out and meet up at the C and G for a bite to eat, we are both very keen on crab so were delighted when we saw the open warm crab salad sandwich - WHAT a huge disappointment! When they eventually arrived we each had two slices of stale-tasting bread that had hardly been placed on the grill, a few leaves on one slice and a revolting orange mess which was akin to Shippams fish paste with some orange dye and mixed with a few small pieces of chopped green something?? We both managed a couple of bites but gave up as it was really unpleasant. When our amiable waitress collected our full plates we told her we found the sandwiches inedible and she apologised and returned our plates to the kitchen. She came back and said the chef was also sorry we were disappointed but no mention was made of a refund. All in all a very unsatisfactory experience.

This was one of our stops during a trip around the Cotswolds. The Crown & Garter upon arrival looked like a great little place to stay, we went in and were given a warm welcome by the lady on the bar. She explained everything and booked us a table for dinner, then proceeded to show us to the room. The room was very spacious and really clean, following all the Covid guidelines. There’s a nice seating area outside the rooms which would be Lovley in the summer. We arrived for dinner later, again greeted warmly by staff, we both opted for fish and chips which was fresh and tasty. I would throughly recommend this place for a stay if you want somewhere quiet and nice for a few nights.

Pub:In the current covid situation, pubs and restaurants need to adapt. Customers cannot visit the bar so an alternative method of knowing what drinks are available is required. The Crown and Garter fail on this. Not only do they not have an App or even a list of drinks, the staff don't actually know what they sell. So you are left just guessing what they might sell.Restaurant:Whilst the food was, generally very tasty and attractive, there is no point trying to fool the clientele. My wife order the burger and specifically asked whether the burger was cooked all the way through or was it pink. She was assured that it was cooked through. Burger one arrives and it is pink. Burger two arrives and that is still pink. They then try to spin the most extraordinary tale. Apparently the steak is so fresh that it will still be pink no matter how much it is cooked. Now I've heard of GM meat but this is the first time I've heard of steak that won't cook.

The rooms are newly refurbished and nicely laid out and peaceful with the added benefit of a few easy walking trails from the doorstep. Pleasant beer garden for good weather.Stayed twice. On second stay lack of staff and poor training lead to chaotic breakfast orders and bar service. Pastry we had on first Sunday breakfast was a little frozen in the middle so skipped it on second stay. I believe the bakery is closed on this day so this could be the reason. The hot items were good though order lost in translation ;-) This is why it dropped a star especially as the daily rate is quite expensive.Would consider staying again as positives outweigh the negatives and would hope for better service next time.

We had a family party in The Crown & Garter for my mother's 80th birthday, for which 19 got together from all over the country and abroad. The restaurant was able to cater for us all in a private room, including vegetarians, rambunctious children and fussy elders. We had three courses from the menu and everyone seemed to very much enjoy their starters, main courses and the huge birthday cake which we had in place of dessert, washed down with bubbly and drinks from the bar next door.Personally, I had a delicious parsnip soup with fresh bread, followed by a spicy vegetable curry with rice, poppadoms and chutney. Other people around me were polishing off duck, steaks, fish and chips or tagliatelle with great gusto.Throughout, the staff were very attentive and the chef brought out the cake which he had made himself. All in all, the whole family had a great day out and my mother was very happy.I cannot recommend The Crown & Garter high enough as a great countryside restaurant, set in manicured grounds in a very quiet and picturesque village which is just a few miles from Hungerford and Newbury.

The Crown and Garter has been beautifully refurbished with a very pleasant outside space. All the attention has gone into this and they have forgotten to train the staff. All charming but have no idea of how to serve. We were the only table inside but had to wait a long time for someone to take our drinks order and deliver our order, the same applied to the food menu. We watched as members of staff walked past carrying one spoon or one drink but we were ignored. We have eaten dinner and lunch. The dinner menu was mostly inappropriate for a hot summer evening. The crab starter was unnecessarily complicated with bizarre lurid green sauce. The sausage and mash was good. The fish and chips dreary. For lunch we chose the sausage roll with salad which turned up as a mediocre lukewarm item with cold patches and a small handful of undressed rocket. The farm shop outside Hungerford has amazing sausage rolls.A more simple menu with good locally sourced ingredients, good homemade bread and butter and trained staff would make all the difference. This could be the most lovely place to go for a meal out or stay for a couple of days but they need to up their game.

Amazing fresh, locally sourced food. A wonderful choice of good food, with generous portions. Wine list varied and reasonably priced. Breakfast was equally as good.

As a local to us and we sometimes have bar snacks, only fair periodically to dine at this wonderful establishment. All the staff are happy, polite and professional and the ambience last night was like excellent, with a mixture of staying visitors and locals alike. The meals were perfect, both sirloin and rib-eye were the finest cuts and cooked to perfection. The deserts of cheese cake and chocolate brownie were light yet rich, pure yummy. A lovely evening with fine food in a beautiful restaurant.

Really enjoyed our evening meal in the restaurant. It's a long time since I have been to the Crown & Garter and it is transformed into a really nice place to eat. Nice to see bream on the menu, it was very tasty, and makes a change from the fish often seen in restaurants. I don't often have deserts, but there were some interesting tarts that tempted me. Definitely worth another visit, even if it's just to see the quirky wallpaper again.

Went for a Saturday lunch with friends, the decor is simple but well finished giving a quality look, the staff are attentive without being overly intrusive. The menu was short but provided a variety of options with interesting and well judged flavour combinations. We had all a starter and a main, the starters were all really good and we all could have easily eaten them again but the portion size well judged as it was an ideal introduction before the main course. The main courses were beautifully presented, tasted really good and with a well judged portion size, the option of desert was not out of the question if one was in the mood for something sweet. The bill represented good value for money and we will be going back.In summary, nice place, limited menu but that is a good thing as it has variety and what they have is really well done.

My friend very kindly treated me to lunch today. Very nice home made bread sandwiches with salad garnish. She had sausage and I had egg mayonnaise. Lovely garden to sit in and all the staff are very friendly and helpful. We decided to have coffee and tea and a cake from the bakery instead of dessert. However, all the cakes are left out on the side counter and not covered at all. I must say this really put me off. Can't believe they did not cover the cakes! I decided just to have coffee but my friend had tea and cake and she said it was very nice. What a shame but I could not risk it as I have a very sensitive stomach. Saw two flies buzzing round the cakes as we stood there and what about people coughing and sneezing over them? Quite frankly it turned me off!

Went to the Crown and garter for Sunday lunch with family. We chose the roast beef which came with horseradish. Compliments to the chef because the food was lovely. My son wanted the beef but is not keen on horseradish so asked the waiter if they had any mint sauce. The waiter came across as quite rude and with an emphatic NO walked off. Not once did he ask if our meal was okay. Would it not hurt to have a few condiments for the enjoyment of the diners and not look down your nose because someone dared to ask for something different

This review is only for breakfast. The hotel is 5*. Breakfast brought it down due to an unprofessional and single grumpy staff member. Terrible coffee, cold hard toast (which is inexcusable since they pride themselves on their bakery), shouting in the kitchen and deciding to put away cutlery (incredibly noisy) 10 feet from our breakfast. We love this place and will always come back. Just, please, sort out your staff!!

Lots of positives - lovely setting, well thought out (though small) contemporary bedrooms, nice beer garden, friendly and enthusiastic staff. However, dinner was a disappointing - our starters comprised very small shreds of cured salmon scruffily presented on a tiny tea plate with a heap of very uninteresting salad leaves and a very bland meat terrine. Main course of lamb amounted to two tiny lamb chops (tasty but very small). A veggie dish with charred broccoli tasted bitter and burnt. A dessert of raspberry pana cotta was not smooth and creamy but like a rubbery mousse. Lots of basic stuff not well done. This was surprising considering the pub has a cookery school!!

The second time I've eaten here in two months, and brought the extended family here after enjoying the experience so much the previous time. The minute you arrive, you know you're in somewhere which is a cut above other places - lovely landscaped grounds, with "The Bakery" on the left hand side as you enter (which is great for picking up home baked fayre as you're leaving!).One nice thing here is you're given free bread as you're seating - something which always used to happen, but doesn't anymore. This was appreciated. The ordering process was good and efficient. We all ordered the Sunday roast, and the reason this review didn't get five stars was the time it took to arrive - nearly an hour! The pub was pretty empty as we were eating late too. However, with chatting the time went by quickly and the roast was divine. My brother (who eats a lot of pub roasts!) said it was the best he'd ever had. That's some accolade! My 18 month old niece absolutely adored the gardens as well. Will definitely come back again - just hope it's a bit quicker next time!

Had been to the bakery before but not the restaurant - we were celebrating a birthday and enjoyed lunch at this lovely spot. As the title suggests, the service we received (female waitress - didn't get her name) was excellent and would encourage us to go again. The food on the whole was very good - lovely starters and main courses (the steak and kidney pie was excellent!) but was a bit disappointed in the dessert I choice (but that could have been a bad choice on my part) - rhubarb parfait wasn't really "rhubarby" enough. However, the bread and butter pudding, and caramel and white choc tart went down a treat with our guests! Not too expensive and a very good outing all in all.

We stopped at this establishment as had seen bakery / cafe after last visit to eat in pub / restaurant. Great setting and interior, good for sandwiches, cakes and drinks. We had a mix of sandwiches, chips, beer and hot chocolate for our party of eight. (4 adults, 4 toddlers). It was a wet damp saturday afternoon and had the place to ourselves. Clearly the staff all all relatively new, but is just ceases to amaze me how restaurants have no idea how to cater for children. If you fill a cup to the brim with hot choc for a toddler it's going to get spilled!! Staff need to be trained to engage with customers and ask how they want things to work etc. We had a nice lunch but the staff need to embrace customer service and go the extra mile. Expensive for what it was but quality was good.

Recently purchased a "Cornish pasty" from this establishment while passing through for buisness, and unfortunately I was handed a Soggy mess! Unfortunately I would say this was made by a 2 year old, tasteless and cold, and most definitely not Cornish as stated! A waste of a 10 mile trip, and will definitely not be coming back. P.s a 4x4 may be required as the pot holes may cause more damage to your pocket!

We've been popping in here for the odd drink for a few months now as we live 5 mins away and we both loved the British freedom lager. We always found the staff impeccable and so we decided that we'd book for my boyfriends birthday between Christmas and new yearOk so firstly we were a happy bunch and it is a small place so I expect that upset the apple cart somewhat but we spent over £300 and we were in good cheer. However we were met with a different set of staff that held no charm. In fact the young blonde girl was out right rude. The meal was ok but I'm afraid the evening left me with a really sour taste given the poor service and lack of attention one would expect for the prices. If you expect people to pay high quality prices then I'm afraid I expect to receive high quality service.

We went for a family birthday. Limited menu but that suited us, and I opted for rabbit pot and pork belly. Both were fine but not knock-out by any stretch and not cheap. Wine a touch expensive too - around £23 for one of their house reds. The bread was little better than your Hovis sliced white, which was disappointing given how much they plug their bakery (which I gather is sadly no longer on site). Seems a missed opportunity here for providing something a bit more ambitious (I'm thinking sourdough, rosemary, etc.).It's London prices in the sticks and doesn't quite justify it. But the decor is immaculate and the service friendly, and it's better than a lot of other places in the area.

We visited the cafe which is in a separate building to the main restaurant and it is small but charming. Lots of lovely cakes, pastries and breads to have with a coffee or to takeaway. We felt very comfortable and relaxed. I do wish they would offer skimmed milk as an option and if they did it would be perfect.

Though I know the pub well being local, this is the first time my girlfriend and I have eaten here. The location is lovely, the decor modern and classy, the staff friendly yet attentive. A regular variation of Ales and Gins. The crab cakes starter was nice, fresh and the chestnut and mushroom soup was superb. I had the sirloin steak and this was excellent, cooked as I asked with chunky fries. My girlfriend had the veggie salad main which she thoroughly enjoyed. A very pleasant evening, highly recommended.

Ate there today for lunch today. Admittedly we were part of a large group of 8, but still, having to wait almost an hour to be served our lunches was poor. We all felt that the food was expensive for what it was, £14.50 for a plate of very underwhelming fish and chips, no peas or garnish, was borderline insulting. The pork belly was disappointing too. No kids menu and a limited menu selection....The only plus is the decor, but you need more than that to convince me that this is a restaurant worth revisiting...

This is a review based solely on the restaurant. I had the crab starter which was £7.50. What arrived was an undressed salad, a lump of creme fraische straight from the tub with two slices of chilli and two very small and overcooked parcels. Very unsatisfying.Hoping for simply 'more' I opted for the traditional and 'special' old boy which was essentially fish and chips. Arrived on a very appealing plate but lacked a lot of taste: chips cold & overcooked and fish was unseasoned and cold too.Overall not impressed at all.

If I could give the Crown and Garter 10*, I would. It has been thoughtfully and lovingly remodelled and is a complete treat. The rooms are gorgeous and incredibly comfortable. Bathrooms are flawless. It is in one f the prettiest parts of England and we are delighted to have re-found it as we have been in need of finding somewhere near our 91 year old mother/in law. Perfection.

We booked lunch here because the reviews are good and the location worked with family coming from different directions. Our overarching feeling is that we felt rushed and that the staff were abrupt. The food was good but it certainly didn’t feel as relaxing as other locations that we have visited. It was quite busy so maybe that is the reason?
