Lovely fish n chips. Decent portions. We sat outside the shop on the picnic benches to eat perfect spot one stop is next door but one so handy for drinks 😁

Highly recommend. AT LAST a chippy that has golden and well cooked chips. Not anaemic one's like most! Fish lovely and white with beautiful batter. My husband says the mushy peas are good. I like curry sauce occasionally, here it's very nice too. Good sized portions. We shared medium haddock and chips.

First time visiting for quite some time, now under new ownership since October 23... we only had chips and curry sauce which was really nice, freshly cooked chips and nice curry, think it will be our go to chippy from now on..

The freshest fish ,chips and batter . Very generous piece of haddock ! The two workers were very friendly and helpful. There is a handy carpark and plenty of outside or inside seating . Very clean and well presented. Much easier to park than for similar establishments in nearby Filey.

What we got was lovely, however the ‘regular’ haddock and chips had fish no bigger than a fish finger with just a garnishing of chips. You get more food in a £1 ready meal! No wonder there’s a skeleton in the window! The woman serving was as rough as Bet Lynch! Will not be returning.

Visited for lunch today, had 2 fish and chip specials. Everything cooked lovely. Nice tasty fish, crispy batter and plenty of chips. Friendly quick service. Will visit again .

Been a regular for lots of years,been tonight 16/6 What rubbish, fish was so so,chips terrible mushy peas disgusting. 3 stars was for the young guy that served us!

ordered fish, chips, mushy peas, curry sauce paid 22.20, husband suggested eating in so sat down added tea for 2, expecting to pay extra went to pay charged an extra £12.60 for tea for 2 was absolutely gobsmacked, food was disgusting could not eat all will never go again absolutely disgusted. Our mistake not going to Staxton.

Fish and chips have been ok up to now. But the chips are now a smaller portion. Saw the chef special “calamari” my wife being from Portugal. It would be nice to get a portion of calamari special at £3.50 I was thinking fresh squid chopped up and battered with the fish and chip shop batter. A nice treat ! Well I had to laugh when I got home and opened the box ( picture enclosed ) 6 pieces of frozen bagged calamari rings. Disappointing, don’t bother. Not cook probably either.

Light crispy batter. Succulent flaky haddock. Really good fish and chips served at our table in a clean and straightforward informal eatery. Parking was easy. Reasonable price.

Ordered large fish received 0ne piece should be two pieces. I also ordered a couple of other things they were alright but cold. I called the shop to tell them about the fish and the manager answered the phone. His attitude was terrible, I said to him this was the second time they had done this and I would not use them again. His answer was well that suits me fine. Then he sent me a single piece of fish 40 minutes later after I contacted him. When I received the second piece of fish he sent up it was cold and I ended putting it the bin.

Delicious food. Batter crispy right through, tasty quality fish, chips perfect. Cooked to order, friendly service and Covid safe queuing for takeaway. Would travel from home for their food if it wasn’t so far.

Ordered Fish and Chips THE FISH WAS VERY STALE and consisted mostly of batter and had been lying around for a while would consider this supper poor value considering the price

We stopped here for F&C's after a day at the beach. The fish was gorgeous and fresh, great chips, tasty pineapple fritter. But the real treat was the tartar sauce - best I've ever tried. I popped in to tell them when we left and learnt it was made by the chef's mum. A totally unexpected treat. Much better than your average fish and chip dinner.

What a delicious meal..fish was lovely with crispy batter and the chips were nice too, all cooked to order with nice friendly staff, be back soon.

Called for a takeaway just as shop was about to close. Nothing was too much trouble and staff happily cooked another fish for my daughter. All fish is cooked to order so you don’t have to worry how long it has been sat. Would definitely recommend and next time I am on the east coast this is where I am calling for my fish and chips as the ones we had on the front were a disappointment. Very surprised at the price - very reasonable

On my travels I used to visit Cross Gates Fish and Chips, so I thought I would try them again in these strange times, telephoned order, stafff were great, I love banter and I got some back, takeaway only , but I couldnt wait try the Golden Battered Fish and the chips with loads of salt and vinegar, I wasnt disapointed, Well done I see my diet plans are gone

The thing I have longed for most since the lockdown is fresh fish & chips and cricket. We were thinking of going to Filey, but all the public loos are closed. Decided on Cross Gates where remarkably, the fish seemed fresh. What a godsend, though the tartar sauce was vile!

Popped in for a medium haddock and chips to eat outside, great quality as always, big chunky chips and a reasonably sized fish. Would go again but to eat in so I can get the full experience.

First visit for carvery ..food okish ..few minor points..as working in hospitality very disappointed with the service .. 4/5 members of staff behind bar talking when when tables could of been cleared or could of possibly interacted with customers ..no checkbacks to any tables..even by management who basically just walked around looking pretty..wasnt asked if everything ok when settled bill ..overall quick & easy if you want to eat in a hurry.

Absolutely fabulous fish and chips. Best in Scarborough in my view We ate here on Wednesday evening after work The seafood basket is very good value and generous portion. Scampi is also delicious. Haddock and chips are superb Choice of mushy peas or garden peas curry sauce beans or gravy Table service and take away We sometimes do a team lunch with the afternoon special. Incredible value Great people and seriously good fish and chips. A firm favourite with us. Highly recommended

This is my local chippy and i absolutely love it! staff are so friendly and the food is delicious, portions are big too so it’s a lot of great food for a small price! definitely would recommend.

Visited 9 October 2adults meals 15.90. Total bill 30.70 reason being took 1 grandchild.3 chicken nuggets chips and gravy,can of coke and a pudding.Almost £15 for a child not acceptable.wont recommend or return.

A friend and I have been using this Fish shop for several years now and found them to be the best in Scarborough.Since the change of ownership took place the standards slipped but no to right the place off have keep't trying the place..But today when we called the batter has changed recipe the fish were thinner lacking flavour and over cooked . I dont know weather this is a cost cutting exercise but i wont be going back for a while. sorry i dont like giving negative feed back but thats how it is.

We though we would try it as we gave tried most of the fish and chip shops in Scarborough. This is definitely the best! Beautifully clean, we had a take away and when we got home it was still perfect. It was the first time I've had fish and chip takeaway that wasn't greasy by the time I got home.

We used to visit this fish and chip shop quite often but it deteriorated dreadfully. We saw there were new owners and decided to give it a try.Glad we did, really lovely fish and chips,sizeable portions and crisp batter. Friendly pleasant staff,a family business. We had takeout,but have been back several times since and would recommend anyone to give them a try,really worth a visit.

I don't like writing negative reviews but unfortunately on this occasion I feel it needs to be done.Firstly we live within a mile of this chip shop and have used it countless times over the years, it's always been positive and good food. This evening I ordered a regular haddock and chips and a scampi and chips, since our last visit the shop had started using different boxes (which are smaller!), As a result the overall portion size is smaller, I'm not a greedy person and to be fair don't want to over eat, what I'm annoyed about is the fact the price stayed the same. There is a poster up next to the toilet door advertising the new " environmentally friendly" boxes, showing that the shop is doing it's bit for the planet, now I won't knock any business that is trying to do it's bit for the environment but when they then hand you your order in a plastic carrier bag it is a bit pointless when the previous boxes could be recycled anyway! To me this is a smoke screen to give smaller portions.The food wasn't great either, the chips were cold and soggy, the scampi was no better than a supermarket frozen bag and the fish was thin and small for a regular, it certainly wasn't what used to be served, either a different supplier or lower grade fish. What I did notice is there is a black board on the wall opposite the till, it used to state the Area in the north Atlantic where the fish came from, it is now blank which tells me it's definitely not the same fish. It's not all bad, the 2 stars I've given it are for cleanliness and the friendly polite staff, just a shame the rest is now a let down. I will in future be visiting Seamer fisheries who have paper bags instead of plastic ones

Been last two times fish is wafer thin and over cooked will not be using again chips were ok but the fish is the worst I’ve had

Went with my mum, we both ate in the cafe and had the £7.95 afternoon special - haddock, chips, mushy peas, bread and butter and a big pot of tea. Great value and the food was first class, really outstanding. Welcome and service excellent too. Recommended.

We came across this gem just passing through from Scarborough back to Derbyshire at around 6pm on Saturday 1st June.

Amazing food, staff are more than happy to help! Lovely service and I would definitely recommend! Even when their really busy they treat each customer very well! Food is to die for!

Called Saturday 1.30ish usually busy nobody in the shop at all, usually very busy ordered 5 fish & chips 3 peas and 2 curry sauce the fish portions were much smaller than previous visits, different staff on questioning said been taken over but not forthcoming or friendly, we didn’t know this, sorry but not the same standard or portion size as previous owners , will not be going again.

Twice now I have been in the last couple of months and I’ve got home and my order has been wrong.

Been visiting Coes for 60 years and rated it one of the best chip shops in Uk. Visited just before Christmas telling a friend with me how great they were. Sad to say they were the worst fish and chips I have ever had and my friend agreed.Last time after all these years I will go there again

We have been using this fish and chip shop for many years now. it has recently changed ownership and we were a bit worried that it would not be as good as it was. We should not have worried - been twice in the past 9 days and it is as good if not better than in the past. The quality is superb and the staff friendly and helpful. Each order is taken and the food is cooked to order so there can be a little wait, but it is worth waiting for. The shop is spotless and the service excellent. Try it you won't be disappointed!!

Having frequented Sue and Tim's fish and chips shop over the years which were always superb, not only in portion sizes but quality I was hoping the new owners would have followed suit, unfortunately not.

Have been coming here for over 4 years nearly every weekend as they used to be the best in Scarborough spending between £15 and £20, the portions have halved and the quality of the fish is very poor now , it’s definitely not the same fish that Tim and sue served, medium isn’t even the size that small used to be but there is no excuse for that as the new owners had a handover of around 6/8 weeks(can’t remember exactly) and did the frying under Tim’s watch so they know what portion sizes used to be served, we gave them a couple of try’s after they took over to see if things changed back, we’ll, it didn’t and hasn’t by reading some of the other reviews, definitely won’t be going back any time soon so around £700 pounds worth of custom they’ve lost from us, wouldn’t recommend to anyone

Shame that the new owners didn't continue with the same quality of fish and the same portion size, the business has suffered, I always hear alarm bells when the staff outnumber the customers on a Saturday lunch time.

Spotted this lovely shop when passing through the village, and so glad we did..! staff where lovely, and very helpful :-) beautiful fish and chips and the portions were huge..! will definitely be going back ..!

Cheeky trip to Scarborough from Wales. Popped in on way. Huge fish, large chips and mushy peas. Even my one year old enjoyed. Food lovely, great customer service and restaurant and facilities very clean. Will certainly be back. 10/10.

Often go to Crossgates for fish and chips. Since new owners taken over it’s got so much better. Fish and chips taste amazing and there portion sizes are brilliant. Staff are so friendly and great atmosphere. Have had both take away and eaten in cafe, can say neither has disappointed.

I have visited cross gates chip show before and after the owners swapped, and I can safely say the new owners made me and my family feel much for comfortable. The food is outstanding and service is ways served with a smile!! I would recommend to all of my friends and family.

I live other side of town but I always made to effort to go there at least once a week as 99% of the time the food was lovely. When new owners took over the portions were mean and poor. I gave the a few chances as well in case it was a one off sadly they haven't improved. The chop is a lot more quite now unlike it was with old owners.

My wife and I have been visiting weekly for a couple of months now as we were told the cafe was back up and running. The place is very clean and presentable. The waiting staff are very friendly, polite and helpful. We both get medium fish and chips with garden peas and it's always looks and tastes great, we rarely manage to eat all the chips even when we order a small portion.

Came here for the first time today as I was visiting a friend. I had medium haddock and chips and I couldn't really fault it. Too far for me to be a regular but if I lived in the area, I'd be back.

The one thing with Crossgates fish and chips was it never altered, good quality fish. Friendly service. Since Tim and Sue left we were always going to support the new owners but last week my small haddock was even smaller, the medium haddock the size of the small!!!!!! This does not bode well at all, a lot of regulars we understand are going elsewhere and I can understand why. When the cafe reopened we thought great, but it appears these new owners maybe afraid of hard work as they have never run a business such as this. The previous owners prided themselves on the quality of their product and worked very very hard. If these owners think it’s just a case of putting any old fish in front of customers then they will find out sooner than they think that regulars will go else where. Businesses only do well if effort, time are put in and they listened to instructions from the previous owners. We will be trying elsewhere this week!!!

We came all the way from Osgodby to go to Crossgates Fish & Chip Shop. Never again! Twice now they have messed our order up and we've had to go back. It spoils our meals as the rest of the family has nearly eaten theirs before we get back from picking the rest of our order which should have been all present. I did ask if everything was correct and they said yes! We will use the Fish & Chip Shops nearer to Osgodby from now on. I would recommend double checking your orders before you leave to save having to go back!

After visiting frequently for 5 years and having had probably the best fish and chips I've ever had I was disappointed with my visit today.

Family’s feel a lot more welcome now with the new owners !! Will be visiting more frequently now the kids love it now aswell ! Very nice fish and chips aswell 👍💚

I have been coming here for years and have not had a bad meal before. Not sure if the same people own it. Ordered fish, chips and peas. The chips were undercooked, the mushy peas had solid hard peas in it and the fish has shrunk in size and mostly batter. The portion used to be decent so didn't mind paying the higher price for quality and size. With other local chip shops being cheaper and the recent experience I won't be back unfortunately.

I travel past every couple of weeks. I make a point of stopping here for lunch and to read my paper. Have to say the fish is as good as it gets. I agree with some of the comments about the ‘boxes’. But the food is quality and I can get over that. Perhaps a small suggestion, try paper plates for your diners and boxes for the takeaways.

I called in here after doing a bit of shopping as the smell and appearance of the shop took me in plus tables and chairs outside .The fish and chips plus scraps were excellent and I will call in again when in the area.

Have been many times in the past and enjoyed every visit. However now no table service. Not quite the same eating out of takeaway boxes and using plastic cutlery and drinking tea out of paper cups. It’s just a takeaway now. Also fish & chips greasy. I don’t think we will be going back in a rush. Plenty of takeaways where we live.

Having visited many times for the restaurant facilities to be told you can sit in but no waitress service was very disappointing.

Truly the best fish and chips you can eat, all fish is line caught and succulent, three different sizes, with crispy light batter. Chips are not fatty , and tang curry sauce to supplement! Superb!

Excellent - all round. Staff and Friar in particular take pride in their work which results on the best fish and chips we have consumed in a long time. We had this place(?) recommended to us and have not looked back since. Well worth the journey. Excellent, well done. This is one chippie that well deserves the accolade of Chippie of the Year.

It's fairly decent fish and chips but in the higher end for prices. In the Scarborough area you have a lot of options and recently there have been some real competition close by which has stopped us going here. Still the food is good.

Visited here today, what a difference to the last time. You have to order at the counter, sit down and wait for the fish to be cooked, after being given a plastic fork. No waitress service.as apparently they had decided to change it to this way which suited the management, not the customers. If we wanted to eat like 'this we would of gone to a fast food restaurant. My fish arrived, not cooked properly, in fact it was raw, so they cooked me another piece of fish. The food is lovely but I don't expect this from a fish chop restaurant, like othe diners we will not be returning again.

We have a caravan near here and always visit for fish and chips. They are always amazing, really tasty. Wish we had this shop near home!

The only chippy our family use. Can't beat the quality and the prices are good too. Everything fried to order, so you may be waiting a few minutes, but it's definitely worth it.

Always looked forwards to visiting Yorkshire and eating here at least ten times a year . But today we could not have the usual table service with our meal eating off a proper plate with cutlery and a pot of tea also bread and butter with our meal.instead it was self service out of a box with a plastic fork and a plastic cup of tea.

Both ourselves and other family have visited on many occasions when staying in Lebberston for both eat in and takeaway... By far the best in the area, great value, good portions and more importantly brilliant quality all cooked to order! Great place...

i do not like this restaurant. the staff are very nice and friendly although the food is massively below standard. the batter is wet and soppy and the fish is mainly grey.

The service was very good, they do a gluten free fish and chips which my partner said were very nice and would have them again. The rest of the food was very nice, not greasy at all. The only let down was the portion, didn't get a big portion of chips. Would recommend but they need to up the portion of chips they give out.

As a local as I have other side of town I have tried most of the fish n chip shops around town over the years, I always go back to Crossgates as they constantly great.

We live in Bridlington so have fish and chip shops in abundance. Have tried most of them but the Cross Gates in Seamer is simply the best. The fish is always beautiful, the chips divine, I am so glad it isn't on our doorstep as we would be eating there more than we should! The staff are friendly and welcoming and the seating area is always so clean and bright.Opens Wednesday to Saturday until 7.30 pmIf you have an average appetite choose the small fish as the medium is enormous!The take away is always busy and there are benches and picnic tables outside where you can sit with your take away.

Located a bit off the tourist beaten track, Crossgates fish and chips is a hidden gem. I'm reviewing as a visitor to the sit down eat in restaurant. Extremely clean and well presented the restaurant a really pleasant eating experience. Staff are welcoming and friendly. I opted for the medium fish and chips. Other members of my party went for the small portions. My goodness when mine arrived I was overwhelmed by the size of it. I would hate to think what the large was like. My portion was more than enough for a good appetite. It comes with bread and butter. Tea and peas are extra. Quality wise the fish was perfect, the haddock was white tender and tasty. The whole package was faultless. We will definitely return for some more. Good value too, very fair price.

Best fish & chips in Scarborough always call when visiting Scarborough, we order fish which is always cooked to order fresh for everybody good size and portions, clean welcoming and staff know us by name now. Can honestly say not had a bad experience sometimes we eat in the restaurant but mostly take away, go out of our way for these fish & chips but well worth it, recommended numerous of friends in the past, lovely and scrumptious

Awful they say.All I can say is that they have the wrong shop.My friend and I went on a quest 21/2 years ago to find the best fish and chips in Scarborough, and have tried every shop In Scarborough Barr one and the ones along the seafront.We can honestly say that the produce from Crossgates Fish shop is by far the best in the area for both quality and consistency may they continue.I have recommended to many friends and the only complaint they have had is that they are closed on Sundays.

My wife and myself called here after watching the tour de Yorkshire and had some of the best fish and chips I've ever tasted also the tea was superb,all this combined with pleasant helpful waitress service combined to make the day clomplete.

Having lived in Scarborough for almost three years and, after numerous recommendations, we finally visited this fish and chip establishment. What a lovely, unassuming place with a great friendly welcome. The fish and chips are superb with fresh tasty fish and crisp non-greasy chips. This place will not disappoint and will certainly be a regular venue for me.

My husband and I visit here when ever we are near Scarborough. It is first class food. We like to sit in and eat as it has such excellent service with the cleanest environment ever. Even the sauce bottles look brand new every time we go. The fish has the lightest batter I have ever tasted without any soggy wet batter at all. It is cooked to perfection. The chips are cut thin and taste delicious. Non of that bitter taste you often get on Fishshop chips.The prices are reasonable also. In fact if you go in the cafe area between 2.00pm and 4.00pm you can buy fish chips bread and butter with a hot drink very cheaply. We had that with peas each and the bill was only £13.00.

Good value and good quality. Fish cooked to order which is good but obviously creates waiting time. Plenty of parking space nearby. Eat in or takeaway.

Used to be a regular of this place and although the owners are both lovely people their standards have slipped massively since they have had it on the market.

What a joy to be able to say that Crossgates is still at the top of its game. Visited Scarborough for a couple of days over February half-term; on the way out my 15 year old was the one who insisted we couldn't leave without visiting for a plate of perfection. The haddock had that indefinable something that tells you it is incomparably fresh. Thank you for staying true to your sky-high standards!

Always great, never had a bad chippy from Crossgates. Haven't found anywhere else as good this side of town.

We live locally and visit this fish and chip shop regularly. It's the best fish and chips in the area. They are cooked to order and taste beautiful. The staff are very friendly and pleasant, and the whole shop is kept exceptionally clean and presentable. There are tables to eat in and it is waiter service, we haven't eaten in as we live locally but I'm sure the quality is just as good. I would definitely recommend this little restaurant.

Always go here when in the area best fish and chips for miles , other peaple may not agree but when we travel from Northampton to visit friends this is our first port of call love it

We visited yesterday after seeing it open as we passed at 2pm. Others in the area we passed were closed. What a lucky find we had of this brilliant restaurant. The service was excellent, the prices were very reasonable. The food was freshly cooked, despite this the waiting time was minimal. The portion size of the medium haddock was huge! What an amazing fish and chip restaurant. Coming from Grimsby I always find it difficult to find good fish and chip shops which compare to the ones in my home town. It is safe to say this one beats any other chippy I have visited. I would highly recommend.

I love this fish and chip shop and visit quite a lot. It's small but we'll laid out with parking outside and I usually sit in for lunch. The prices are very reasonable and they have a good selection on the menu including pies plus a large selection of cold drinks although I prefer a coffee with my food. The staff are always really polite and friendly and service is fast. It's good for a lunch break from work with friends as we are time limited. I would recommend to anyone as an excellent place to eat.

This is easily the best southern Scarborough chippy, fast efficient service, great food, always busy and reasonable prices. We eat here regularly and it never disappoints.

If you want F&C in North Yorkshire, there is no better, but sit in and enjoy them fresh. The fish can only be described as a unbeatable.

Been here a few times, you order on arrival for fresh fish, the fish & chips are lovely, chips hot and fresh and fish very good sized. Only complaint every time I have paid by card they charge you 50p per transaction but they have never told us this. I questioned this last time in as our bill was over £25.00 we sat in restaurant area and was told yes this is correct but they don't have to disclose this. I am suprised at this as I think you should be told you get charged 50p per transaction, Owner not happy when questioned about this. Apart from this fish & chips good.

Been here many times and the food is always excellent and prices reasonable much better than other restaurants in the area.

Meant to write a review of this last time we went for holiday take away. This is a good Chippy and well worth a visit. They also pride themselves on the fact they sell sustainable, line caught Cod, Haddock and Pollock. So that's excellent. The reason I scored it 4 is I think that they could improve their chips - a bit soggy for my liking, but that is the only comment really. Boxed is no additional cost unlike some other places. Trip Advisor certificate of excellence holder.
