Cricketers in Chichester

Last time we went we had a young dog who was so noisy, we had to escape to the garden for lunch. Same dish this time, mushrooms and Stilton with pepper corn sauce. Excellent as a light lunch. This is a traditional lunch with charming staff, a broad menu and excellent food. I was very envious I didn’t get to have any of the onion scraps with the local sausages ! Bought some local honey too, looking forward to trying that.

Stayed the night whilst attending a near by wedding. We had the downstairs room and it was lovely. Had everything we needed, tastefully furnished and cosy. Garden of the pub was lovely for a drink in the afternoon and breakfast was also good. All staff we encounter were really friendly and helpful.

Only a 5 min drive from my destination. Lovely little hotel room. Lovely country pub. Very very clean. Very friendly and attentive staff. Room was ready upon my early arrival. Had a few lovely touches to the room little fridge with fresh milk and water and cereals and tea and coffee etc. breakfast in the morning was absolutely delicious. Overall just such a lovely little place I would highly recommend staying here.

A first visit to this attractive pub. Lunch was great value, the food was excellent, very well presented and the service was friendly and efficient. We look forward to returning soon.

We hadn't booked and the staff said we were welcome to say IF we could find a table. We went out to the back garden and there were a family leaving so we settled down, brought drinks and watched as the one person who was bringing out food, walked past us several times - and the table was still full of the previous peoples' meals & drinks. We piled them up & made the person aware, but he seemed very rushed off his feet. We managed to get a menu after returning to the bar and were told it was going to be over an hour wait for food as they were too busy and as we hadn't booked - they weren't' expecting others to want to eat. Despite the seemingly negative attitude of the lady behind the bar - we ordered some food & enjoyed spending time with friends in the garden until our food arrived - which was very welcome after the wait! When our food was brought over, that was when the table was cleared - we did feel quite sorry for the young person as he seemed overwhelmed with it being just him, but he just kept going so should be given kudos for that. We will return but will book a garden table next time in advance. The garden is dog friendly, which was fantastic as brought 2 Newfoundlands who enjoyed the shade, the bowls of water left out for visiting dogs, and the attention from other adults & children.

I went to this pub a little time ago very I very rude staff and owner named Ruth horrid not friendly and dose not look after there customers well at all food was appalling tasted horrid for the price I hope people no they reuse sources off of tables that people have used and spit in food all together horrible pub would never go back over my dead body

Apologies but I cannot believe the comments about the food here. I ate here for dinner and then lunch and the food was of a very basic quality. I had two different salads and the quality of ingredients and care take on creation was less than I was expecting for the price I paid. The location is lovely and the staff were very friendly but this food is arguably £3/4 overpriced at least for what you get.

Over the past year visiting with a friend who came over from Australia it was a half way meeting point. Lovely staff, lovely food and well looked after. The Garden is beautiful and the weather really helped and we sat on the decking in shade because of her two dogs. Would we go back - yes.

We stayed for one night in this lovely pub. Clean and comfortable with lovely touches such as fresh milk in fridge and fruit. Breakfast in the beautiful garden was delicious. highly recommend this little jewel in the Hampshire countryside. landlady was helpful and accommodating when I foolishly ran out of petrol. Will definitely stay again. plus I had the best dessert I have had for a long time. waffle with salted caramel ice cream , Chantilly cream strawberries, toffee sauce and popcorn. I recreated it a few days later at a family party. it went down a storm. thank you to the chef.

We have just come back from a 1 night stay in a renovated barn it's absolutely beautiful inside exceptionally clean with everything you need. Fresh milk and fruit in the fridge. Hot drinks selection and breakfast boxes in the room. Ruth is a fantastic host and goes above to ensure you have a perfect stay. The breakfast in the morning is delicious with fresh coffees and orange juice. We will definitely stay again. The grounds in the garden is stunning.

We discovered this charming pub whilst out walking today, it’s beautiful inside and a wonderful spacious garden to the rear, helpful friendly staff and great beer.

We found this little gem whilst staying near Petworth and visited several time during our stay. There is a good selection on the menu and the meals we selected were delicious and mu husband was impressed with the burgers and the chips are brilliant. We also tried the ploughmans which were excellent. The service was great and staff very friendly. We loved the garden which was really well spaced out and very peaceful. We really look forward to coming back on our next visit.

Had a great meal on a Saturday afternoon at 2 pm. The service was great and the food was good honest pub food at a reasonable price. The pub garden is spacious and we thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Took almost an hour to get food, no updates, apologies or explanations, charged for drinks we never had, again corrected with no apology, food mediocre at best (super watery sauce with mussels; tasteless seafood gratin). Staff were inattentive and we had to reach out to them almost every time, usually found them in the bar which was near empty, pub/restaurant was overall at perhaps 30% capacity, so being busy no excuse. Hopefully we just visited on a very slack day… Great garden and pub in itself, other customers main courses looked decent and arrived quicker.

It's been a while since we visited the Cricketers, but the food was absolutely great and the staff very friendly. We both chose the local griddled asparagus on a bed of salad leaves with poached egg and hollandaise. It was beautifully cooked and presented and our side order of cheesy garlic bread was delicious. Every one of our group complimented the food on how good it was.

I ordered the Chump Lamb Chops which came with three! I would have been impressed with two. Perfectly cooked with roasted new potatoes and mange tout. And...excellent service. The family ordered a huge homemade burger and an ample portion of plaice. Best value eat out...

Ordered a 2 course meal. While awaiting my lime and lemon was served, flat lemonade tasted just like tap water. Exchanged with little apology. An elderly lady then questioned us when we confirmed we ordered 2 starters, could hear her interrogating the barman who took our initial order-totally unprofessional. Soup arrived containing sprigs of herb- choking risk. Croutons were soft. Main course just tasted like an experiment! Pork, Parsnip Pear with sprigs of herb and sliced lemon peel. Parsnip crisps were rubbery. Atmosphere was dull. Toilets desperately in need of refurb. Used to visit periodically. Overpriced and poor quality. I visit many establishments and haven’t written a review in some time. Will avoid in future.

This is a lovely friendly pub with a fantastic garden, however the food could do with improving. Bread used on sandwiches was not fresh. The beef in the sandwich was impossible to eat because the 'topside' (I doubt it was) was so tough, you couldn't bite through it. And the chips are either oven chips (not acceptable) or very old chips that were cooked the day before and left somewhere to drain off.

This pub has a very relaxing feel, with its lovely rear garden a bonus on a fine day. Food is largely locally sourced and cooked fresh, so there may be a little wait when it's busy. However, the benefit of the local produce shines through when it arrives at the table. The steak ale and mushroom pie was a stand out choice. Beer selection is good too.Definitely a pub we will return to when next in the area.

Dropped into this pub after a day out in Petworth. We were specifically looking for a family oriented pub with a garden where we could eat and let the kids play. All I can say is what a hidden gem - the pub was great - garden was excellent with great layout and design, great staff and service. The food was incredible. I would highly recommend this place and will be going back again when passing through.

We had reserved a table for the evening meal, best to reserve as can be busy. We were advised on arrival to order soon as poss as a large party of 16 were arriving, which we did. Our meals were very good and came within a reasonable time. When it came to ordering desserts we were told could be a little wait, which they apologized. To be fair their was just the two serving at bar and waiting on tables so a busy time which I thought they coped with well.

Had lunch here. Five meals from blackboard. Very very average and over priced. Extremely small salad to accompany two underwhelming fish cakes. Two average fish and chips for high price. Two other meals also disappointing. Didn't complain as our guests from abroad first experience of fish and chips and would have embarrassing.

We have just spent the weekend at the Goodwood Festival of Speed and just by chance stopped on the first morning for breakfast and every other morning. The quality of the food and friendly owners really made it so much so that we stopped every evening for a meal and a few local beers.

A great pub with great food! Our walking group had lunch there recently, they had opened so that we could pre-order before our walk started which was great, so when we came back at lunch time all we had to do was pay for our food, confirm our order and wait for it to be served! Our food arrived together even though we were a large group with diverse orders, very nicely presented and generous portions. The sandwiches were well filled with garnish on the side and the cooked meals looked delicious. Lovely gardens to sit in and really nice and friendly staff - definitely well worth a visit.

A warm welcome when we arrived, great choice and quality of food, really well conditioned ale (Flower Pots), great service, great garden. We were a party of 8 adults and 1 child and everyone enjoyed their meal, not a single gripe - I don't think that has ever happened before!

We usually get great food and great service here, over the last 10 years it’s been fab. The other day we arrived to eat in the evening for 4 of us. The pub was half full but all the tables had reserved on them except the round table for 4 at the bar, which 2 staff where busy folding napkins. No smile or greeting from them just a no you will have to eat outside. I have spent a fortune with you over the years you even ordered 4 32 oz steaks 4 lobsters and a special champagne I wanted without a deposit, all cooked to perfection I might add, see previous reviews and pictures. Tonight We had to pay for our beer no tab, and then we had to pay in full for our food and sit outside because the staff wouldn’t give up there seat. It was so cold outside after 10 minutes we came in and as the staff had finally finished folding napkins we sat at the round table. We then enjoyed a most magnificent meal and left. Usually I leave between 15 %and 20 % as a tip, this time as we had to pay in advance nothing was left. £20 out of your pay because you couldn’t greet a customer or be servile to them. I hope this is just a one off as I rarely give less than 5 stars.

I took my elderly disabled father for pint and sandwich but arrived at 12.15 to be told no sandwiches were available given they advertise ‘brunch’ bacon or sausage sandwich til 12! My disabled dad is 84 and in wheelchair they said we needed to order off main menu! He is diabetic so had very expensive poor quality soup! Don’t bother with this pub their customer service is rubbish we were told we needed to leave table which is only one my dad could access which wasn’t booked by1.15pm as it was reserved!AVOID!!!

I was part of a large walking group visiting the area. We had preordered our meals, but were still delighted (and surprised) at how punctual the service was, and the really high quality of the food. Very friendly helpful staff too. Greatly recommended

The pub were kind enough to call me and offer a Mother’s Day booking after they had a cancellation. I hadn’t been to the Cricketers before so was pleasantly surprised to be greeted by such a friendly and welcoming bunch, with the lovely log burner warming up the bar area on a chilly day. The food we had was lovely, and with really good-sized portions we all left full to the brim! I had beef which was delicious and tender, and the coq au vin was also excellent. Desserts were equally superb, especially the affogato, and throughout the meal, service was spot on from lovely, attentive staff. I can’t wait to return and try some more of the food on offer. Great pub with excellent food, thoroughly deserving of 5 stars.

What a treat when travelling from London. Just been here for the second time and not disappointed. A lovely fresh ale to accompany the best ploughman’s lunch ever. Loads of it and a lovely variety of food on the plate, we sat outside overlooking the lovely gardens and were very lucky to have a warm sunny day. How many pubs do you go to where the staff would come out to the garden to ask if everything is ok. It’s cosy inside too with a real log fire, nice seating, prompt service and a good variety of ales. Parking is really easy as it is set well back from the road behind a grassy island. They keep chickens so you know the eggs are fresh.

This was my first visit to the pub having had it recommended by a friend. Lunching with three others: the menu was varied; the four different mains we ordered were substantial, well cooked and well presented; the staff were friendly and obliging. I can't fault it.

We popped in for lunch on one very very very wet and windy Wednesday in March. The fire was lit and the lady behind the bar had a beaming smile and made us feel so very welcome on such a horrid day outside.

Now, I knew this place was there, nestled in the village of Duncton near Petworth and as I drove past I thought "I really must visit" Well finally we did and what a lovely find! We stopped here for a refreshing drink and a light lunch after an epic downs walk in Graffham....

Quite old fashioned. Loos could do with an upgrade. Food OK though why have a salad with ham, egg and chips. Friendly staff.

We chanced upon this pub on the way into Petworth. A great variety of food on offer with a comfy cosy feel inside. Great place for walkers and dog owners.

A return visit after a couple of years and after recent recommendation. Glad to see the experience was much improved with good service with happy smiling staff. Good food with a wide choice. A return visit is definitely on the cards 😀

Met up with friends after a fabulous walk for an eagerly anticipated Sunday lunch - we weren’t disappointed.

Recently visited the Cricketers with friends for lunch and - yet again - had some superb 'pub grub'. We'd been walking in the Downs and had booked for 1.30pm. We were running 15 minutes late so rang ahead to let them know. Really friendly response and a 'no problem' set our minds at rest that our table would still be waiting in a busy pub. Warm welcome on arrival and shown our table. Beer selection was excellent and the food came once ordered came in good time. The crab gratin and the ham, egg and chips were all home cooked and excellent. The steak, mushroom and ale pie was amazing. Big chunks of meat and a proper thick gravy. We're local to the South Downs so we walk regularly and usually finish with a pub lunch. I suppose this is our tenth time at the Cricketers in the last few years and we've never ever been disappointed. Consistent quality and great service. Looking forward to the next time we're walking near Duncton. Even had a book of Downs walks recommended to us!

Stayed here for Christmas festivities with our family. Arrived nice and early and the table was already laid. Polly was super friendly and welcoming and a good few beers on tap and some delicious wine was had. Lunch was their set festive menu and was amazing. Really lovely food, especially the brownie sundae - not your usual pub sundae, this was something really special.

Good pub food and friendly, helpful staff who did their very best to accommodate multiple food allergies with no prior notice.

We visit here quite regularly, winter and summer as we are quite local. The food never disappoints. Lovely to sit by the fire in winter and in the garden in the summer. The food is always very pleasing, and staff always happy to see you. It's also dog friendly, and there are some great walks in the area, so a visit before or after is great.

We stayed here in the new accommodation for two nights while walking locally. Delicious local bacon and eggs for breakfast, plus good pub grub for both evenings. Very welcoming with good service and some excellent beer.Well positioned for sightseeing as well as walking, and a proper local, judging by the social event that took place while we were there.

Met up with some friends and had an excellent lunch here. None of us had a dish that was less than excellent, and we will certainly be returning.

Called in for a late lunch, and what a treat! A very beautiful garden, extremely well kept, with good quality tables and chairs on decking , and dotted around the garden more tables, all overlooking woodland! The food was exceptional great service great food what more could you ask for! 10out of 10 for the cricketers!

Just a quick review to say, we came back here a year later and the food and beer are still very good. We came on a lovely sunny day this time and discovered their beautiful garden at the rear of the pub.

A nice country pub, recommended by the site owners of nearby Graffham Caravan club site. The homemade Steak and ale pie is wort trying. Local ales at the bar. Popular with locals.

Dropped in on the off chance, they were busy but fitted us in. Great meal, excellent service at a good price.

My friend and I enjoyed lunch at The Cricketers. The blackboard menu was varied, the prices reasonable and the staff friendly and approachable. I will be very happy to eat there again.

Stopped here on route to Goodwood Revival weekend, we had a great full English breakfast all freshly cooked, the service was also excellent. Clearly a favourite with many others on route as they had reserved their tables, as we will next year.

We were staying at a campsite within walking distance of the pub, the staff were welcoming and the choice of food and drink was excellent. We sat in the garden which was very peaceful, our meals were well cooked and tasty. We would definitely recommend the Cricketers

On a pouring wet evening the Cricketers was a welcoming sight as we drove from the "Old Railway Station B.B", it was as good as its reviews and my wife and I enjoyed the fish and chips and mushy peas, which was very good, but a bit pricey. Still it was a special occasion so we pushed the boat out. Definitely a good choice for us and we enjoyed our evening which complemented the lovely stay at the Old Station near Petworth

We called in on the way back from Glorious Goodwood on a Saturday evening. A lovely character filled country pub with friendly staff and a wonderful garden. The food is hearty and generous with great service. A little gem.

Love sitting in the garden with the trees around. Very well layed out with your own decked areas. We both had burgers, the burgers themselves were very meaty and juicy and topped with bacon and brie. The tomato salsa was scrummy with a tasty hint of star annise? A really good size portion and very reasonable. We had starters but they were brought out the same time as the burgers, not great and also expensive for the portion size. However, the service and food we had was very good.

Visited here many times but recently have stopped eating here because the fish choice is always very limited

Really busy night due to the Goodwood festival, but we got a table and they squeezed in our order between the big tables. Lovely goats cheese tart and buttermilk chicken. Massive portions and friendly staff.

Have been going here on and of for years. It is a nice, well run pub that also serves great food. We popped in the other day, on a very hot day. We expected the Cricketers to be full, but I think they were all down the beach. The meal was good. I had the special, which was crab and fish burger topped with a soft shelled crab< deep fried. served with chips plus slaw. It was a good job my wife was listening because I said my order three times at the bar. Went and sat down and my wife said, I think they just put you down for a crab salad. So I went back and they had indeed, this, despite me telling them three times. While we were there, we saw two more orders go back because of errors, so come on staff pull your fingers out of your ears. Great real ale here too. Just to add, that my burger was very expensive at £17.95. way too much.

Just popped in for light lunch so had two starters to nibble on in the sun soaked garden (shade available). Went for the charcuterie and whitebait. Tasty , served on a slab of wood.

This is a delightful country pub with a friendly welcome for people and dogs. On a busy Sunday there were good communications between the bar and the kitchen. Well prepared country food including a delicious crab, leek and prawn gratin, and a tasty mushroom burger.

We saw this pub on the Doggiepubs website so we decided to go here after a long walk with our dog. We were not disappointed, the food was excellent and all home cooked. We had a beautiful 3 course meal with drinks for £60. Our starters, mains and desserts were all not only beautiful, but great value. The portions were massive!
