My friend and I had lunch here yesterday and decided to have a starter and pudding as we were not that hungry. We were also looking for something that bit different to the usual sandwich and quiche and were not disappointed. We both had the chicken skewers which turned out to be a pretty hearty lunch and absolutely delicious. Then (great minds think alike again) we both had the bread and butter pudding. Again, absolutely delicious. Staff were really friendly and the pub felt warm and cosy on such a chilly day. Toilets and restaurant were spotlessly clean. Definitely worth a visit, delicious food, lovely staff, and reasonable prices. We will be back!

Visited here for the first time. Although we visit Petworth frequently. A great place to visit. The pub is under new management and the staff are making every effort to create a friendly and welcoming environment for diners. The ambience is very good. It looks and feels like a well run pub. We had a roast beef Sunday Lunch and rhubarb crumble. The latter was excellent. The roast beef and vegetables were very good. The Yorkshire pudding was deflated and roast potatoes were slightly undercooked and firm. I had a good pint of golden ale. There was a log-burner and the pub was dog-friendly with water bowls and dog treats. We will definitely go back. Inflated yorkshires and softer roast potatoes and it would have been perfect.

Nice pub in the center of Petworth. Outside and inside seating and dog friendly. Loads of beer options on draft which was great. Nice service as well the only disappointment was the food, also considering the price of the food. I had the burger which was decent but didn't come with any burger sauce as described in the menu so it was quite dry. We also had ordered the risotto which was average. It also said V, VE on the menu but came coated in normal cheese. Maybe it comes as a vegan option if you ask for it but I assumed if they put V,VE on the menu next to it that implies it's vegetarian/vegan.. I think most places that's the case..

We were passing through and looking forward to a nice meal after a long journey, but The Star pub left us sorely disappointed. We called ahead to book a table and were initially excited about our meal. The staff promptly took our orders, but then the long wait began. It took 50 minutes for our food to arrive, despite the dining area being nearly empty. During our wait, the staff were noisily sorting out cutlery, seemingly for the entire month, making the experience unbearable. When our food finally arrived, it was mediocre at best. I ordered a chicken burger and fries; while the fries were nice (reminiscent of McDonald’s, which I consider a positive), the burger was the worst I’ve ever had—completely tasteless, like eating cardboard. My partner ordered fish and chips and found it equally unimpressive. We paid over £45 for two meals, a pint of beer, and a pint of pop. This price would have been acceptable if the food had been tasty, but unfortunately, it was not. We cannot recommend this place. If you still wish to put yourself through this experience, by all means, avoid the chicken burger. It seemed more like a drinks establishment for the locals, as there were plenty of people in their work clothes enjoying a pint. Perhaps it’s a nice spot for a drink, but as far as dining goes, it fell short of expectations.

We placed our food order and settled in, expecting a reasonable wait time. However, 45 minutes passed before our food (some sandwiches and a children's meal) finally arrived. The delay seemed unjustifiable, especially considering the relatively empty dining area. there were two women that had also waited a similar amount of time for some soup. To add insult to injury, our waiter seemed completely overwhelmed; struggling to remember an order of 3 drinks. Overall, the combination of excessively long wait times and poor service left us deeply disappointed. We had hoped for a pleasant afternoon at the pub, before enjoying the ground of Petworh House, but instead, it was marred by annoyance and dissatisfaction. We certainly won't be rushing back anytime soon

I should have read the reviews before visiting this place! Very slow service (only 6 people across 3 tables in the entire pub waiting for food), waited 45 minutes for it to arrive. The food was ok but not served how the menu states. We ordered the sharing Camembert which said it came with fresh toasted bread - to us all, that meant fresh bakery style bread. How wrong we were… it came with ordinary toast. When mentioning to the staff, the first person we spoke to was very dismissive, telling us it’s always served with toast and didn’t know what else to suggest. She got her colleague who confirmed it would normally come with crusty fresh bread that has been toasted but had not been delivered. When the manager came over to speak to us, she stank of cigarette smoke and tried to blame the chefs for not informing the front of house staff of the menu changes. She offered a mere £1 off of our bill because that’s how much the bread would have cost…. I explained that I would not have ordered it at a cost of £14.50 if I knew it was coming with standard packet white sliced bread. There is a Co-op next door - they could have gone and purchased part baked baguettes when they realised their delivery had not arrived… this would have been much better than serving toast! The manager did not apologise and in the end, took a whopping £2 off our bill. My friend ordered the burger which she said was ok but unable to eat the bun as it had gone very soggy. No one later checked to see if our meal was ok and when the waitress cleared our table, instead of offering us anything else, she asked if we would like the bill. We will not be returning again. It would appear there is new management within the last few years, which is bringing this establishment down.

I booked this pub because it said dogs welcome, we were not asked if we were taken dogs, yet on being given a table we were dogs could not be in that area of pub. Instead of sorting us out another table the Manager was quiet rude about it & made it sound like it was our problem! The menu said they served gluten free gravy & then they said they didn’t - I’m a ceoliac - my husband got gravy from the local co-op for them! The food was lack lustre, poor effort, over cooked. The bar staff were good at least, management issue. Don’t bother, poor experience, too ecxpensive.

We visited the pub on Wednesday lunchtime and there were 5 of us. 2 adults and 3 children. We were shown to a table and were relieved to see they weren't overly busy as the children were very hungry. We gave our order to the manager who was working the restaurant and she kindly brought out 3 very small pieces of cheesy garlic bread to keep them going while the kitchen did the table next to us who had ordered before us. Thats where it went wrong.... The tables who came in long after us were getting their food one after the other while we waited and waited. The manager didn't courtesy check us what so ever and no explanation was given. I went to the bar twice to ask what was going on and the girl was extremely embarrassed but was unable to answer my questions. After waiting for over an hour with the children watching other tables getting their food and getting more upset we paid for what we'd had and left. It wasn't a complicated order. 3 kids meals, a curry and a chicken burger. Last time we visited back in October we had an excellent experience but we will never go back and I am currently in contact with the brewery.

The bar staff during our visit were pleasant. No problem there. The issue was with the food. Four of us waited at least 35 minutes before being served the Baked Camembert (2 couples sharing two portions). It was to be served with cranberry sauce and toast. Well, what a disappointment that was! Almost £15 per portion and it was served with processed brown bread, barely toasted. Very limp and completely unappetising. What not served with toasted sourdough or a decent slice of bread at least? But worse was to come. Attempting to eat the cheese, one had to be careful not to bite on RAW WHOLE GARLIC just pressed into the cheese! Two of us crunched into garlic and of course, this just about destroyed our palettes for the rest of this visit. This was just awful - we all agreed this was not a place to return too. No one asked if we were happy with the food of course. Had we not had to pay up front, I am sure none of us would have been happy to pay for this!

Not our first trip, but experience is getting progressively worse. Really lacking consistency. We went for lunch for my Dad's birthday at the weekend as he lives locally. Last time we ordered Cheesy garlic bread as aside it came as huge chunks of bread, really quite nice. This time it was 2 slices of ordinary bread, basically cheese on toast. It was servied on napkins, meaning we spent a lot of time pulling bits of paper out of the melted cheese. Really not reflective of the price. Another bit that really rubbed us up the wrong way was that we ordererd 2 portions of onion rings for the table. Each portion had 3 rings. We were sat by the kitchen and repeatedly saw portions of onion rings with 6 per plate leaving the kitchen. Why were we paying twice as much for onion rings? If you are low on supplies, or stock, take it off the menu rather than trying to cobble it together with what you have?!

When the meals arrived 3 out of 4 were ok, but the bangers and mash went very wrong, no mash available, replaced with poor quality fries, burnt sausages certainly did not make the meal look appetizing. Terrible experience - we had a table booked for 12:30 with friends and two under 5's... it took 1.5hrs for our food to arrive despite repeated request for he kids food to be brought out at least. The waitress advised it would be "another ten minutes" 3 times and then said it was the "children's chicken" that was taking so long. when the food did arrive, the chicken was so over cooked it looked like it had burnt skin attached, even though it was skinless and instead of providing "extra" gravy with the sausage and mash in a side dish like any other establishment they poured the entire amount in a bowl, so you couldn't actually see the potato or sausage and instead we had a gravy soup! There was no effort by staff or management to rectify, they at least had the sense not to try and charge service!

Visited with family recently intending to have lunch before visiting a National Trust property nearby. We made our choices but unfortunately 2 or 3 items were off the somewhat limited menu including, surprisingly, soup. We were served our drinks quickly but then the wait began. When I enquired as to the whereabouts of our food after half an hour, our waiter asked if we'd like him to check with the kitchen. Yes, we would like, particularly as we had a hungry child in tow We were then told: 'About another 15 minutes' as our food was currently being prepared. After about 10 minutes I was presented with a finger bowl of warm water and a piece of lemon (I was having the mussels) so quite naturally assumed something was about to be served. Afraid not stomach, don't get excited. Another 10 minutes elapsed and so I asked a passing member of staff why I had been given this unaccompanied treat, although by now I was strongly resisting the urge to eat the lemon and down the contents of said finger bowl. This was then whisked away and exchanged for a warmer version. Exactly an hour after ordering, out came the food to a decidedly icy reception from our table of ravenous people. It had been a very long time since breakfast and we were fast running out of time to do the very thing we had journeyed to Petworth for - visit Petworth House. Had someone had the decency to inform us there was going to be an exceedingly long wait to get served, we would have gone elsewhere - which was presumably precisely why they didn't. We had to eat our food quickly, skip desserts and coffee and get going. The food was okay and mussel sauce was delicious but quite a small portion. Apologies belatedly offered when we paid the bill and left were not especially sincere nor overly effusive. This is obviously what passes for normal service t The Star and therefore not considered anything out of the ordinary. Would not recommend and indeed as we left, we were well placed to warn some people just coming in of the lengthy delays they would be facing - since the staff clearly wouldn't. One lady mentioned she was only wanting soup, so we were of course well placed to tell her that particular item was off the menu. A great pity we didn't just bring sandwiches.

On arrival at around 1pm we were told there was a wait for 45min for food and that some choices were off the menu. Thought about going elsewhere and wished we had to be honest. It turned out that around 30-40% of the menu wasn't available and so with limited choice i ordered something i wouldn't normally and my wife had 'catch of the day'. The menu was priced a little high ie £18 for fish and chips. Really? Sometime after ordering i was informed that the dauphinoise potatoes from my choice were not available and that i would get roast potatoes! So i had limited choice to start with and then a make do meal. What?? My venison was just luke warm and my wife was quite disappointed with her fish dish. All in all a spur of the moment treat for us was an expensive and disappointing one. The staff didn't ask how the meals were with opportunities to do so. I had the worst meal of my entire life yesterday at The Star in Petworth. Lovely pub, and my friend's basic battered fish and chips were great apparently, but all I can say is my plate was the most horrific mess I've ever seen! Wish I'd taken a photo because describing it probably won't get near the look of it. A giant plateful of huge overcooked vegetables surrounding an upside down plaice that was SMOTHERED in a fried onion sauce!! What was the chef thinking? Well actually I couldn't call him a chef because a proper chef could NOT serve up such a dish. It was honestly disgusting. So people, my advice is to stick to pub basics and steer clear of 'Catch of the Day' !!!!!!!

Deceptively large and tastefully country pub decor. Good service from attentive and friendly staff. Had the Rib Eye steak - a nice cut and well cooked in itself but was amazingly overshadowed by the plentiful and well-though out sides of chips, giant onion rings, garlicky and buttery mushrooms and beef-dripping gravy. Had Three meals here recently and all have been fantastic. The catch of the day Fish is awesome – the only criticism can be a rather excessive quantity of vegetables but it’s all top-notch. Beer was excellent too and very good service. Keep up the...

I went there for lunch with a group of people. The food was great. I had some mussels which were cooked just right in a beautiful creamy sauce and there was plenty of them, with chips and bread. And everyone 's food was good and copious. The staff were very friendly, efficient, and made the experience very pleasant. I recommend this lovely pub.

Quite a disappointing meal if I’m honest. After seeing previous reviews, I had high hopes for this place but unfortunately it wasn’t our lucky day. Small things matter and sometimes they can be the most important. For example, being seated but never mentioning that food needs to be ordered at the bar. Obviously it came to light but after waiting a while for a non-waiter service. On ordering the meals and drinks, it seemed like there was a slight lack in training how to make an orange juice & lemonade. 85/15 ratio was a bit much. Once the food was ordered it was nice to see it arrive quite swiftly, unfortunately the calamari tasted very fatty and tasted like it had been cooked in old fat. Chewy but that I do understand isn’t easy to avoid. Once I had finished half the starter and gave the remaining calamari a miss, half the cutlery was then taken away and not replaced for when the main came out. Little things I know but they all add up. Then the main courses came out. First the roast beef, which I must say the yorkshire puds were great but all the roast potatoes were so black they were almost unrecognisable. Soggy and burnt and the roast beef was very grey and chewy. The worse thing was the catch of the day. The fish itself seemed ok but the broth it was in was so unpleasant in smell that it was off putting for both to eat anything. Almost thought the fish was rotten it was that bad but it was the broth that had the most god awful smell. Such a shame to be writing this sort of review but I hope it helps in the long run.

As avid Sunday roast eaters in different pubs all over UK. This was absolutely best we have eaten out. It was a traditional home cooked roast and absolutely perfect. Could not fault the food, service or value. I would recommend to all.

Simply spectacular Sunday lunch. Book a table, because it’s popular, and experience a wonderful, flavourful Sunday lunch. The cauliflower cheese is a dish in itself worth travelling for - yes, cauliflower cheese! I had the marinaded chicken which was truly packed with marinaded flavour, supported by the regular roasties and veg. Oh, and a Yorkshire pudding that you could walk around. Friendly and attentive service that all adds up to a memorable meal that I’d fully recommend.

Christmas meal with friends, Great service with friendly staff. A good selection of drinks on offer. Three courses where the six of us had different selections off the menu, and all of us enjoyed the food and the evening there. Thank you John and staff.

Unable to rate the rooms as we didn't stay here but what I did see of the pub - I LOVED!! It's warm and welcoming with a large fire to the left as you go in. We didn't eat here either but the menu looked lovely and I've included a photo of that. It's a dog friendly pub too which was nice. Spacious with what appeared to be a lovely outdoor seating area (it was raining today so we didn't brave it). Definitely looking forward to going back!! Plenty of on-site parking too which was a nice touch.

Arguably the best fish and chips in town, where the chips are always on top form. And the large range of items on the menu provides plenty of variety if cod isnt your thing.

This is a super little pub, tucked away. Very popular, you really need to book. Staff are friendly Friends said the food is amazing and it looks lovely. Check the opening times as they only open certain days. My only issue is that like may other pubs they serve Fevertree which I hate with a passion as its sweet and has a particular taste which I find invasive.
