Lovely place with great staff but OMG the food prices are astronomical for a pub! Over £10 for most starters and often more than £24 for a main. At least the alcohol prices weren't too bad though. But won't be going back to eat any time soon, even though the quality of the food was pretty good. P.s. can't comment on the hotel part as only went for food and a drink.

Lovely pub but very disappointed in the food. Lunch time menu abysmal. Very limited choice so chose a Ploughmans sandwich. It arrived looking very uninviting no salad garnish of even a few crisps. The bread seemed very dry and realised that it was cold toast! The drinks were very overpriced. We went elsewhere for dessert and coffee. Did mention the poor choice on menu but not the poor food as we were out for the day celebrating my birthday. So disappointed!!!

Over the years we have been to the White Horse on numerous occasions including staying overnight at least twice and with family. There is a lovely circular walk (amongst others) you can do to burn off some calories before tucking into some food. Last Sunday we went for a roast which by all accounts was lovely. The only thing that wasn’t top notch was the service. We had to ask for our table to be cleared after having our mains and had to ask for the waiter to come back over to take our orders for deserts some 15minutes + after having the table cleared. The bill, when asked for (no sign of any staff member checking to see if we wanted it) was not calculated properly (overcharged by £9 which isn't huge but just shouldn’t happen). There was an item on the bill that we didn’t order. When we pointed out we didn’t have that item of food the reply was ‘we don’t have enough buttons on the till to name every item’. It’s simply just a re write on the till. We will be back but just wish the service a little more attentive and caring. 2 people, 2 mains and 2 deserts with a small wine and 1 larger at £90+. Fully appreciate the costs of running a venue such as the White Horse but if prices are premium then service needs to follow suit.

I’m sure a lot of the food and staff are very nice but we stopped off as a group for coffee and was shocked at how expensive it was (£4 cappuccino). Tolerable as a once off if it had been a decent coffee but it was just warm milk with a bit of flavouring. Really unpleasant. The whole table who had coffee felt the same. We did mention it to a member of staff, but it was just a “sorry about that” reaction.

Beautiful food and wonderful service from the young bar staff. I had a slightly unexpected comment from a much older lady behind the bar, as I was taking one of my clients to the toilet after the meal.... Excuse me but you haven't paid?!?! I replied yes I'm quite aware of that but I need to take one of my clients to the toilet! I thought it would be patently obvious where I was going but I guess she saw me as one of 'those' people who try and do a runner... Even though I was with two disabled clients whom I was supporting... Still nevermind... The food is fantastic and that is the main thing!

This was my first visit to The White Horse. I chose it as a venue for a funeral tea as it was near to the church on the edge of Chichester and the setting seemed ideal. It was perfect ! The staff at every stage in the planning were kind and helpful , of course , but it is what happens on the day that counts. Everything was prepared to a high standard and all that I had requested was granted. In all , I had close contact with three members of staff , all of whom were cheerful and so efficient. It meant I and my family could relax with confidence that all was well , which is so important at a function such as this. Thank you to all at The White Horse .

Beautiful pub in lovely rural location. Staff were all consistently friendly and efficient. The food was really tasty, well-presented and there was a good choice. My room was comfy and quiet and had the best bathtub I've ever had a soak in. It's hard to be as enthusiastic as I'd like to be because I just didn't feel the room was worth the fairly hefty price tag. Admittedly, it was a Sat night when I stayed but the hike up in cost for a night seemed a little unfair. Charging over £300 for a room and describing it as 'boutique' sets up expectations which weren't met in terms of decor and additions to the room such as cotton wool pads, shower cap, robes, etc. I don't think a bin should be plastic in a boutique room and I think towels should be big and fluffy. The breakfast offering wasn't generous as the menu asked guests to just chose one dish. In other boutique stays there are a range of cereals, fruit, juices and pastries available to help yourself to as well as hot food to order which brings with it a more generous spirit. These things probably sound a bit petty and I wouldn't have minded if I hadn't paid so much. I've recently stayed in a shepherd's hut which had more in terms of comfort items and was more boutique-like and was a lot less money. I can even stay at a Pig hotel for less per night. So, overall, I left feeling a bit disappointed. I think you could either lower your prices slightly or visit other boutique stays and make sure your offering is in line with them. I fully accept that it's my choice to stay and I did know the cost beforehand but I was expecting more for my money. You have lots of potential and you are so nearly a perfect stay that I've bothered to write this long review as I want you to be better!

I recently had the displeasure of dining at The White Horse, and I must say it was an experience I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy. From the moment we walked in, it was evident that the staff had a blatant disregard for non-locals. Despite there being empty tables, we were made to wait for what seemed like an eternity. Once seated, the rudeness of the staff was undeniable. They seemed to take joy in making us feel unwelcome, clearly treating us differently because we were foreigners. This level of unprofessionalism is shocking in this day and age. The food, when it finally arrived, was mediocre at best and certainly not worth the agonising wait. I would strongly advise anyone considering a visit to The White Horse to think twice, especially if you’re from out of town. The staff’s behaviour was not just unprofessional but downright discriminatory.

Away from the restaurant area the rest of the pub oozed quality and comfort in an old fashioned pub way. 8 family members and I spent Mothers Day here, which was my first (and last) visit. The staff were very welcoming and the pub is lovely. However the food was bordering on being inedible. The starter of trout was virtually tasteless and very little of it. The main course of roast beef was cold, the vegetables sitting in water, (microwaved I suspect) two slices of beef which were very substandard. Burnt Yorkshire puddings which were replaced with fresh ones (and very good) why not serve these first time? The roast belly of pork was a joke, just a ring of fat with a tiny amount of meat no delicious crispy crackling on offer. My mother-in-law had the fish, ‘Catch of the Day’….but appeared to be a supermarket bought piece of salmon which was overcooked. The only saving grace was a couple of deserts which were ‘acceptable’. A deduction of £70 was taken off the bill, which in my view was insufficient considering more than 50% of the food was not eaten. To summarise, there are many more establishments offering superior food at similar costs and would surely compensate their customers when they get it wrong.

We spent 2 nights as an extended family break - 8 adults, 1 18month old and a dog! We chose this pub/hotel as we were all arriving from different parts of the country to meet up to celebrate a birthday. The rooms were great being on the ground floor and all near each other around the garden area. All of the staff were great and more than helpful, nothing was too much trouble. The food was good but one little niggle was that we arrived on Sunday and although we had pre-booked a table to eat in the evening, unfortunately they had been busy during the day and had therefore run out of a few things. Also, at breakfast on both mornings they had run out of orange juice but were able to offer alternatives but maybe a trip to the supermarket might have been an idea just to get some emergency juice whilst waiting for the delivery. The pub/hotel is in a great location close to Chichester etc., but being out in the country meant that it was lovely and quiet. All the staff we met were more that accommodating but Alana deserves a special mention for dealing with us as such a large group especially as the 18th month old had recently 'found her feet' and her voice and was a making the most of running around. Alana was very good and we hope that we didn't disrupt the other diners too much! We would thoroughly recommend this pub for a short break and we have, as a family, all said that we would be happy to have another birthday mini-break there anytime.

The pub is located in the heart of the South Downs, therefore is the perfect place for lunch or dinner and a dog walk, we also overheard a staff member mentioning that the pub is completely dog friendly, including the restaurant and rooms!! Perfect place for a weekend break, we will definitely be back.

Absolutely delicious Sunday roast! Best veggie one I’ve had in years and my husband loved his chicken roast too, we both gave it 10/10 and that’s a pretty rare occurrence. Can’t wait to go back! The staff are also so lovely, such a great country pub,

Staying for one night, an opportunity to spend time with a relative. Super location, great rooms, interesting and varied menu, which was well executed. Welcoming team, and dog friendly. What's not to like?

Lovely clean rooms, friendly staff. Quiet and comfortable absolutely nothing not to like. Breakfast was substantial, good quality, and nice selection. The hospitality from staff was superb. My one suggestion would be to have some of the fantastic game that is so abundant around the area on the menu. I think your missing a trick. The food I ate was good though. Thank you for a lovely couple of nights.

Lovely location and traditional old pub. Sunday lunch for 6. All order roast beef at £19.95. Food arrived fairly promptly and staff pleasant. The miniscule waffer thin slice of beef was more akin to a slice of ham. One tiny parsnip, a carrot, and three roast potatoes. Two meals were returned as beef was so tough it couldn't be cut. After we complained the staff apologised and discounted our bill. Overall it was disappointing and we won't return.

Set in a wonderful rural location, The White Horse combines the best of relaxed traditional hospitality with contemporary amenities, good generous pub food and most importantly a warm welcome from very professional staff. Accommodation set around a lovely grassed and lavender planted area was smart and spotless, with the added option to sit outside at some pretty tables, chairs and benches. We also really appreciated the provision of an ice bucket and fresh milk in a chilled flask to compliment the free tea and coffee in our room. We look forward to a return visit.

I've been a few times recently, it just seems like it's getting worse. Landlords always have something better to do than work hard. Tables are dirty, food is burnt and service is a minimum. I wish it was better as the location is great but it's really not.

For a pub that's in the glorious setting of the South Downs, this should be the prime place to go on the weekend, however, I would avoid! As a family, we went tonight for their charity curry night and the whole night was laughable! When we arrived we turned up to a filthy table (which the waitress later covered the leftover ketchup spillage from the previous guests with our new napkins rather than wiping it down), to them be ignored for half an hour until we went inside to order for ourselves. Bearing in mind the two landlords were sat on the table next to use with friends and completely ignored the fact their staff were all over worked, and service was failing miserably. If they had the afternoon off, fair enough, but they would at times half arsely attempt to help out. My family are locals and we've been in many times over the years and the two new landlords never bother to make pleasantries or make you feel like a valued local. We ended up waiting at the bar for 20 mins whilst the staff were over run, again, the landlords turning a blind eye, to then be charged £10.60 for a rum and coke, with blue light discount applied!!! The Currys themselves were minimal. You'd get better at a harvester. We understood it was for charity, but it all felt like such a rip off. We had about three pieces of chicken each, we ended up with half a ripped naan bread served to us and burnt onion bajis. Oh and the plates were dirty too. No one checked back on us to ask if we were happy. We were so close to leaving and asking for our money back. This place has gone down hill over the years and has no real sense it's getting any better. Prices going up, poor service, minimal food and landlords that ignore you. It feels as though they think their too good for us country folk. Bring Nicky back!!

Wonderful find! We’ve stayed here twice now as it’s a lovely country pub, and very peaceful. It’s in a great location for country walks so we bring our little dog as he is very welcome here - We have a tasty breakfast, head off for a long walk, back for an afternoon drink in the gardens, then a peaceful dinner in the pub. The accommodation is in the grounds, each having its own front door onto a grassy area so no having to walk through corridors in a hotel to let my dog have a sniff round first thing in the morning. There’s ample parking, plenty of outdoor seating and the pub inside is tastefully decorated. The staff are always very welcoming and honestly I can’t fault this place - I’ll definitely be returning for a third short break stay. The menu is varied enough to cope with my vegetarian needs and we’ve never been disappointed with the food. Highly recommended for anyone looking for s peaceful, stress free country getaway.

What a fantastic stay we had at The White Horse. Booked in for 2 nights with a family wedding being held there on day 2. Lovely rooms, beautiful gardens, great restaurant food, staff very welcoming and hospitable. The atmosphere for the "all day" wedding was perfect. The chef excelled with the wedding food and the delicious breakfasts. Sam and Sarah are perfect hosts. Definitely recommend The White Horse as a lovely venue for a wedding and family stay in country surroundings. Thank you to the whole team. See you again!

Where to start! What has happened? This used to be such a busy, great place to come, always something exciting on the menu and friendly staff! Now times have changed drastically! It’s now owned by ‘butcombe brewery’ which is plastered everywhere to help you remember, quite what a brewery from the south west is doing owning pubs in sussex I don’t know! It now has the feel of a generic pub with standard, generic menus probably all the same across the pubs, such a shame what’s happened, we were pretty much the only ones dining and the menu was so poor we had have fish and chips and a burger! You can have these everywhere, we miss the short rib, crab crumpet etc! Service not what it used to be - maybe everyone is fed up serving the boring food! Definitely one to avoid as plenty of other independent pubs in the area serving vastly better food.

Excellent choice of Starters, the traditional Sunday Roasts and interesting alternatives. The boys enjoyed the wine list, girls where driving. Lovely helpful and amusing staff. we look forward to our next visit

Thought long and hard about leaving this review and appreciate that they need more staff but when I go to an upmarket restaurant I want to be shown to my table and offered some menus but the young lad on greeting us pointed to a table in the corner and said “it’s that one over there” and we were left to get on with it. We then waited at least 15 mins for anyone to come over with a menu. I could go on, the food was lovely but not hot enough, the gravy was brought out in the smallest jug I have even seen in my life and lots of people were asking for more. We didn’t have a starter but had two mains and two puddings and then coffees. We were there for 2.5 hours! Also, they were unable to provide a liquor coffee but it was still added to the bill. It will be a while before I go back. Hoping things get a little more organised. The restaurant was really busy and because of past reputation is doing well but word gets around.

A great location but sadly a very average experience.  We went on a Wednesday night during half term and the menu was limited with none of the daily specials actually available but still on the board.  I elected to go for the fish and chips and it was almost inedible, super dry and as if the fish had been reheated in an oven, the chips were terrible, dry and super crispy.  My daughters had the chicken dippers and the chips had LOADS of salt on them.  We were keen to stay for desserts but decided to skip it.  I understand they have/had a new chef in so perhaps he was coming upto speed.  Sadly I wouldn't return.
