Enjoyed a great lunch at the Earl of March. The service could not have been warmer or more welcoming, and the food was beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. Added to that was a wonderful selection of home-baked breads available to buy. Wish we lived closer!

Popped in for lunch and it was busy for a Monday. We soon realised why .. the food was outstanding! Linda, who was the only front of house member, did an outstanding job. She managed all the customers, inside and out, with a smile and efficiency. Certainly an asset. Food was fabulous.. we had 2 open sandwiches (Brie & homemade fish fingers) and 1 ham, chips & duck egg. All delicious. Pudding (bread & butter, sticky toffee pud) we had to make room for and delighted we did! Thankyou! We’ll be back :)

Terrible meal for lunch . What sounded lovely and seasonal was awful . Pheasant pie was rubbery pastry and mashed potato was like glutinous jelly with a hard scum on the top . Should have sent it back straight away but embarrassing to my friend . Vegetables were acceptable. And service quite delightful. Cannot recommend . As my local so very disappointed

Total redemption! After a call from the manager a couple of weeks ago to discuss my last review (below), we returned today for a second go at Sunday lunch. I’m very pleased to report that this time it was really good. Excellent service and a great, robust yet very tasty traditional Sunday lunch with all the trimmings. We will certainly return. ................Having recently moved to the area, we were looking for a local pub/restaurant serving traditional Sunday roast. Nice front of house staff but kitchen understaffed and so slow we cancelled our deserts after nearly 40 mins wait. Food was actually good but we were expecting lamb as per the menu and not a bit of lamb plus a lot of stuffing wrapped in pastry. Great roast potatoes and good Yorkshire pudding so the addition of the pastry was not a great combination. Pity.

Really shocking service!! We were hoping to enjoy celebrations here for a family birthday party. The restaurant was understaffed and the environment was not pleasant. The food unfortunately was cold and when politely trying to speak to management, we were greeted with an extremely aggressive member of management. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY OR YOUR TIME. Really a shame for what used to be a lovely pub to go to.

We went for Sunday Lunch to celebrate my nephew's engagement and had a dreadful experience. They were understaffed with very slow service. Ordering took a while to get their attention. Nonetheless, the starters when they came were excellent. But sadly that is the only positive we can say about the meal. Roasts came after a long while and were at best lukewarm, one so cold it had to returned. It came back no more than adequately warm and the vegetables left in serving dishes were by then cold. The various meats were far from the best roasts we had ever had. Attracting attention to complain inevitably took a long time, and little improved. Puddings took even longer. A request to see the owner who was the chef met with reply that he was too busy to see us. The only person who would talk with us was a temporary front of house person who could do nothing except offer a small 10% reduction on the bill for a ruined celebration. Subsequently, we have had an apology and a further refund, but still a very unsatisfactory way of celebrating an egagement

If I could give it less than one star I would. A group of five of us visited on a Sunday for a family celebration. Starters were nice but took ages to arrive. Main courses were inedible, cold and parts burned others undercooked. Once we finished our main courses our plates weren’t cleared for nearly 45 minutes, we had to ask for them to be cleared eventually and for the desert menu, it took another 45 minutes for us to be given menus. The owner/chef (who served burned/raw in the middle Yorkshire puddings) refused to come and talk to us about how terrible our experience had been. I can’t comprehend how someone with such disregard for their customers could run a business. I would never return and recommend everyone to avoid if you don’t want to wait hours and be treated like your custom does not matter.

And refuse to pay for something I can cook better myself ! We were told on several occasions that they were very short staffed and the servers were embarrassed to say the least ! yep ! These things happen I get that , but stop your bookings if this is the case ! We really like The Earl Of March. The atmosphere is good. In summer it's great eating in the garden. The service and staff are lovely. But, they do really need to realise that there are a lot more vegetarians around now than there used to be. Including vegetarian children. The children's menu has not even one vegetarian option. Even something simple like pasta and sauce would do. On the adult menu, your only choice is a cauliflower dish at the moment, which is very tasty. But, unless you fancy putting together a load of sides to make up a meal, which you shouldn't really have to do in order to have a meal, the cauliflower dish is your only option on the menu. So, all round, an excellent place to visit/eat, with lovely staff, but they need to give some thought to adding some vegetarian dishes to their menus for vegetarian adults and certainly for vegetarian children, who have no vegetarian options at all on the kids menu.

Big shout out for EoM yesterday when I met up with a great friend for a long planned lunch. We had heard that they had a power cut but could still look after us. They could not have done more. A simple menu from which we chose scrambled eggs and smoked salmon on seeded bagel with sweet pickled vegetables. Delicious to taste and glorious to see. Not at all easy when you don't have power.....for 3 days! They considerately gve the two of us a big window seat fornatural light, wood burner near by. Do support them. They can't claim compensation for the huge amount of custom they'd lost as the electricity provider 'could not guarantee electricity 365 days of the year'.They were the only premises in the village without power.WELL DONE EoM and huge thanks. We had an excellent lunch here with the opportunity to catch-up on an old friendship. We chose the starters as we did not want a heavy meal in the middle of the day. The specials provided lobster bisque which was beautifully served and delicious. We also had the scallops and the mussels both most tasty and well presented. Yes it was expensive but for a five star meal it was worth every penny. Service was most attentive. Recommended for that special event.

We were very impressed by the food and staff at the Earl of March today. We both had the scallops starter from the al a carte menu and the dish was perfectly cooked with delicious flavours We then each had an open sandwich, these were al a carte sandwiches at normal pub prices, I had Brie, beetroot and homemade pickle, my husband had beef, both came with pickled vegetables, remoulade and brilliant homemade chunky chips that as delicious as roast potatoes, the sandwiches were thoughtful, tasty and great value for money, even though we were full we couldn’t resist sharing the sticky toffee pudding dessert and we weren’t disappointed it was gooey but light, with great ice cream on a bed a crunch.

The food was lovely (we had the Crab Thermidor and Lamb) as was the wine suggested by our waitress. I've eaten here many times over the years and have had to delete a previous 5star review from 3 years ago to re do my review now. If you come here midweek, be warned. I came with a friend, we paid over £160 for a meal that was lovely, but we witnessed a member of staff who was clearly done with his shift, and at the bar...lingering over our table and at one point telling the other staff member behind the bar that he had "farted and it stinks" This was whilst we were eating a couple of meters away....and then we watched the barman rolling cigarettes whilst in conversation together..... There wasn't any service, really...it was odd. Gorgeous menu and food with the atmosphere of the foundry at kickout on a Friday night... The menu and food doesn't align with the staff we came in to contact with. It ruined the atmosphere as we were just wanting a midweek catch-up and a splurge on a nice meal with some wine, and we both came away pretty disgusted. Won't be back....

Stopped late for an alfresco lunch. Absolutely blown away by the quality of the food. We both had an open steak and onion sandwich served with gremolata and fries. Perfectly cooked and seasoned steak, presented with complimentary sides, elevated the dish to gastronomic highs. Even the fries were seasoned with salt pepper and freshly chopped chives. The strips of crunchy vegetables, some pickled, gave a lovely freshness that tantalised the tastebuds and the mustard gremolata the perfect balance to pull everything on the dish together. Well done Chef..

Under new ownership, long-time customer, poorly treated. Waited ages for food (1h 40 minutes), expressed concerns and waitress walked away. Our children's food was never entered and so their food came after ours and had to eat separately. We were checked on once during this long wait where we ordered more drinks, which we did not receive, we did not receive our bread and olives to have with our drinks, we did not have glasses for the jug of water they brought. Lamb was pricey and overcooked. Owner was extremely rude -- told us he'd have our Google review taken down. We were offered nothing for our terrible experience, not even an apology -- instead owner was argumentative and condescending. Another waitress, did step in to support us and she was very kind and did all she could but she was working very hard without much support from any of the other staff -- it was uncomfortable to watch her work so hard alone -- but thank you to her for all she did! Today was very hot and busy -- I hope the owner was flustered from the conditions and reflects on his treatment of us and does not treat others the same. We used to love it here but would not return under this ownership and do not recommend.

Please read the recent reviews before visiting. I think its very hit or miss these days. The service was extremely slow and when we gave our feedback our waitress walked away. The owner was abrasive and condescending and accused us of lying about how long it took to get our food (1h 40 m). Even when the adults received their food the kids meal's were forgotten and they had to eat separately. For the price, the timing and service should be amazing. If they are slow they should communicate with you. We were not attended to during this long wait, except once, where we ordered drinks that never came. Some of the food was tasty, but the lamb was overcooked and tough. We have loved this pub for years and are so disappointed by this experience. Disappointing experience at The Earl of March! We were shocked by the exorbitant prices, especially for families. The apple juice was a staggering £4.20 for a tiny glass, not even a premium brand. I can buy the same juice from the corner shop just up the road for 99p. It's outrageous to come out for a meal together with children and be paying nearly £10 on just two tiny glasses of cheap apple juice, alcohol was expensive compared to other pubs nearby too. The food was also overpriced and portioned strangely, which only added to our disappointment. Unless they rethink their pricing strategy, we won't be returning to this restaurant anytime soon.

We eat out in Chichester a lot and in comparison The Earl of March is expensive by all standards and the service disappointing. When we replied “no thank you” to a dessert we were served with the bill immediately. Even though we expressed surprise at being given the bill, by saying it wasn’t for us, the waitress stood over us with the card machine expecting immediate payment without giving us time to look at the total. We might have liked another drink but we weren’t offered one. In and out of the restaurant in just over the hour. The most expensive night over in a flash, we won’t be returning.

Simply outstanding food, beautifully presented and wonderful service. Started with very generous bowl of olives and cornichons and a selection of home made flavoured breads and butters - all delicious. We then had beer battered fish and chips - which was huge, lightly fried in the most amazing batter and absolutely delicious. I had cod with root vegetables - it looked too good to eat - would have taken a photo but couldn’t wait to try it!

We stopped at the Earl of March for a Saturday lunch, having not eaten here for some time and had a thoroughly enjoyable experience. Service: Both the front and rear of staff were extremely professional and friendly. Food: The fish and chips were noteworthy, due to their size and quality. This was genuinely the largest battered cod we had ever seen! The chicken pie special dish was also fantastic. Value for Money: The standard of food and portion size mean that you get great value for money.

Lovely pub, location, expensive we were happy to pay for good food and service. We were very disappointed and the experience an expensive let down. We chose a late sitting for our Sunday Roast at 2.30pm, there lies the issue. The starter Apple, Stilton, Walnut salad was delicious and outstanding. The cucumber bottles of tap water on the table a nice touch. When ordering the Roast Lamb, we specifically asked if it was served pink, we were told it was. The lamb served to us was not sliced, minimal, clearly the left over end cut overcooked and fatty. I had no option but to return the meal. Was told there was no Lamb left, only Beef or Pork. I was happy to have any of the above however to my surprise I was told it was the same lamb meat I returned served on a different plate with the meat chucks cut up. I was given a steak knife told to cut through underneath to get to the pink meat? ! Unfortunately some of the lamb was just too fatty and inedible. The selection of seasonal vegetables were great, however £25 for a plate of vegetables steep. This could have been handled proactively the opportunity for staff to put right, this didn’t happen, I did not consider it acceptable to serve what were clearly the last scraps left. As a gesture of goodwill a glass of wine was deducted off our bill and we were asked to give them another try in the future. Maybe we were unlucky, we won’t be rushing back anytime soon. Too many other good establishments that would not dream of serving up the poor quality of Roast lunch we experienced today. Shame as could have been so good otherwise.

My partner went out with her mum and friend and I was appauled to hear that her Mum was borderline called a liar as they were told by front of house that they didn't have a reservation which was not true as they made the call a day in advance and was confirmed. My partner has a soya allergy and whom ever took the order said they would check with the chef to make sure she could have certain dishes. They apparently checked. However, dish came out with Edamame beans... Which are literally Soya. Training is definitely needed after such a stupid mistake as that. The saving grace for the service was a gentleman called Jamie who I was told was excellent. I didn't attend, thankfully, I don't intend to.

Way overdue in writing this review but I am still SO appreciative of how this lovely place took in a hot and weary walker on a scorching June day and made me up a delicious fish and chips. Great service, they came over with a huge carafe of water to help me get rehydrated. Gastropub quality food but a nice neighborhood place with no pretension, wonderful!

My partner and I went for dinner at the Earl of March last night. The food and service were outstanding, leagues ahead of a majority of pubs and restaurants in the area which tend to be slightly underwhelming. The menu itself was exciting with lots of seasonal ingredients and the dishes did not disappoint they were (consistently) so delicious and impressive with so many different elements, textures and flavours throughout the whole meal. The service was also fantastic and the staff were extremely friendly and welcoming. I really recommend the Earl of March for a delicious and exciting meal out- I am so happy we've found this gem.

On holiday visiting family and we detoured as this pub/restaurant was recommended to us. It certainly did not disappoint. A friendly welcome from Helen, presented with a fabulous choice of dishes. Pie of the day came highly recommended and again did not disappoint. Recommend you try the breads- delicious! Service was outstanding and the presentation and taste of the food was exceptional. We will definitely return on our next visit. Lovely to meet the family (fellow Northerners). Try the scrambled egg and smoked salmon bagel …amazing 👍🏻

I very rarely complain as I know firsthand how hard it is to run a restaurant. I’m even more reluctant to post this as a longstanding customer of the Earl of March. But I have been horrified by the approach taken by the new management which seemingly places short-term profit above their customers’ health and wellbeing. I had to cancel a recent evening booking for two people as my friend had tested positive with Covid that very morning. Despite cancelling the booking at 7am by phone, email and the online booking system, I was charged £30. I took this up with the manager - including coming in with proof of the positive test as my phone call had been met with disbelief - but was told that there was nothing that could be done. It is my duty to warn everyone that this establishment seems to prefer customers with Covid to honour their bookings, and risk spreading the virus to others, than allow them to cancel with no charge. As if this wasn’t enough, I have never been treated as rudely by a restaurant’s management. Dismissive, accusatory and downright offensive…so much for the season of goodwill! Suffice to say that I will not be returning and strongly suggest that others avoid unless you wish to support high-handed, rude profiteers who show no care for their customers.

The food in this place is outstanding! Being vegan means we normally have to settle when eating out, especially in pubs. This food has a fine dining feel to it with great care going into flavours and presentation. We’ve visited 3 times recently and each time has been lovely. The chef is clearly passionate about what he does. The front of house staff also are brilliant! Looking forward to a Sunday roast. The non vegan food I saw also clearly was given just as much attention as mine. As a vegan though, the chef does request we give him notice of our visit so he can get creative!

So disappointed. The lady who served us was lovely and couldn’t do enough for us but sadly the food didn’t live up to expectation. We had lunch and decided on the pork dish. Unfortunately the pork was extremely dry and tough which spoiled the whole thing. It was also fine dining small and expensive. To her credit the lady came back and asked us if the pork was ok after she cleared our table so we said no. She apologised and said she would tell the chef and then took our coffees off the bill as a gesture of goodwill. Sadly I won’t be going back to risk a meal I can’t eat at those prices. Their home made bread is excellent though.

We’ve driven past this pub several times as fairly local and thought how nice it looked - there is an amazing garden with wonderful views so decided to stop there recently for a drink, and are still in shock - for 2 medium (175ml) glasses of wine the bill was £22.80!! We don’t mind paying for a decent glass of wine, and this was nice but not spectacular; we researched afterwards and not expensive to buy “on the high street”. As a regular visitor to London, this was more than we pay there. It has really put us off as despite being a nice place, this is frankly a rip off, which isn’t a good feeling. We have no wish to return.

Walk it on a Monday lunchtime. Immediate welcome. Grazing plate whilst waiting for main course fish and chips which were probably the best I have ever had. Huge piece of cod with hand cut chips to die for. Couldn’t finish it and was offered a doggie bag. Still managed to squeeze in a delicious bread and butter pudding. Well recommended, you will not be disappointed.

I'm a foody and I will be the first to let restaurant staff know if something is not good with my food. The food here is AMAZING. The Earl of March's chef puts The Ivy to shame. There is simply no comparison. Not only it's beautifully presented and yummy just to look at but it's SO tasty. I've been here several times now and never been let down so I thought it was time to leave a review. The food is not cheap but it's worth it. It's an experience you won't forget.

Oh my goodness I haven't visited the Earl of March for about 8 years. Went for lunch today with my daughter and it was fabulous! Helen was looking after us and she was amazing, so friendly and helpful. We both had the homemade fish finger sandwich with chips and a delicious salad and it was literally divine. I could eat it over and over, and it was underpriced in my opinion. I'd have happily paid more than the £9.50 they asked for. Seriously good and I'll not wait another 8 years before returning.

£11.40 for a glass of savignon thankfully I only asked for a medium size dread to think what they charge for a large. I appreciate pubs and restaurants have to make a profit, it was very nice but left a very bitter taste

I’ve lived a 4 min drive from this place for nearly 2 years and had never been in as the vegan options were very limited but that is only at first glance! The chef loves to be creative, asking likes and dislikes then prepares the most delicious food! This is like no other food in the area…his attention to detail, flavour combinations and passion for what he does is outstanding! The staff team are equally amazing. Our server, Susan, was very passionate about us enjoying our whole experience. We’re already planning our next visit!

My wife, mother in law and I visited 16th February to celebrate my wife's birthday. Staff were very good, friendly and welcoming. We all had the carvery, this was underwhelming to say the least, vegetables very under cooked, parsnips were soggy, 2 slices of very very thinly cut meat and the gravy was very watery but the roast potatoes were good. My wife had half cola, I had a pint of cola, my mother in law had glass of water, we all had a sweet, which was very nice and tasty. At just over £90 (with the service charge) this was not value for money.
