Cassons Restaurant in Chichester

Top quality food. Ambitious menu. Worth my drive 30 miles for special occasion meal. Run by husband and wife team that own the premises so do have to pay rent for expensive town accomodation or to employ a star chef. Therefore prices very reasonable for quality delivered. Restaurant out of town near A27 so no country views. But not aware of traffic once inside. Also easy parking in restaurant garden so no access problems.

Another superb dining experience (it would be limited to call it a mere meal) at one of all time favourite restaurants. We have experienced both lunch and dinner here but now tend to opt for the incredible Sunday lunches as it suits the elder statesman in our party. Indeed Casson's is probably my 93 year old dad's favourite excursion! We often plan to just have two courses but are invariably tempted by three as the menu always looks so appetising. There is always a range of starter and main course options - cooked to perfection - but it is all the Michelin quality sauces and presentation which really make the food come alive. The roast beef yesterday was sublime - empty plates all round - and it would be a mistake to pass on the beautiful desserts (and well curated wine list) as these are always exceptional. What really sets this restaurant apart though is that you feel you are treated as a guest rather than just a customer - the long standing team work exceptionally well together and the warm glow lives long in the heart and stomach. As always we look forward to our next visit.

We enjoyed a fabulous dinner here. My wife and I were visiting Chichester for the theatre and were staying nearby in the Old School B&B . The concise, but wonderfully curated menu, made choosing exceptionally difficult but we were not disappointed as the food was of the highest quality.I was driving ( will not make this mistake next time we visit) - so sadly the extensive wine list was out of bounds - however the wines by the glass were excellent . Service was friendly and on point - everything was exceptional at a price that really could not be matched . If we were to have a similar meal of such quality in London it would be twice as much Fantastic in every way - thank you

Amazing Sunday lunch yesterday. I went with two friends and each of us was blown away with our choices both main meals and puddings. Wonderfully attentive staff, the most delicious food beautifully presented and not overpriced what more could you want?

We recently visited Casson’s with some friends for a Sunday. Have to say it was a lovely experience from start to finish. The food really was very good throughout and really good value at £40 for three courses. Service was attentive and friendly and we came away having had a thoroughly nice time. Maybe the restaurant could do with a lick of paint here and there but that didn’t detract from our experience at all. Hope we get a chance to visit again soon!

What a beautiful experience. We dropped by here unexpectedly after breaking down in our van and could not have had a warmer welcome from the couple running this restaurant. They immediately made us feel at home and prepared exceptional dishes with the same care as though for family. The food and wine pairings were honestly outstanding. There were delicate and complimentary flavours; subtle but memorable. So glad I got dessert, too. Too much to describe here but you must try it for yourself. But the best thing about this place is that you can really see that the couple are doing it for the love of great food, and sharing that with as many people as possible. They achieve a high standard of cuisine in relaxed surroundings and you can truly just relax and enjoy the food without worrying about pomp or etiquette. There should be more people like them in the world, they restored our faith in humanity. It's a true gem - go here, it won't be around forever.

Flawless Sunday Lunch. My wife and I visited for Sunday lunch and everything from the welcome greeting to the dessert was impeccable. We had the 3 course menu for £40 a head which was incredible value for money considering the quality of ingredients and the cooking talent on show . Starters were smallish as is expected at this quality and price point when scallop and crab are involved, but mains and desserts were both very generous portions. Some of the best roast beef I've ever eaten. Flawless cooking, perfectly flushed tender sirloin, no grey band, and packed with flavour. We've paid more for Sunday lunch at more prestigious restaurants, some with Michelin stars and not received this quality of food. Cassons is well worth going out of your way for and is easily the best fine dining restaurant in Chichester. Cannot recommend it enough.

Booked with trip advisor reviews having never been in the area. Unassuming building just off A27. However everything from there on is just fantastic. Good quality is right up there with some of the best restaurants. Limited a la carte and would love to have tried the tasting menu that day (n/a) but all courses prepared well, full of flavour and colour. Great job and very reasonably priced when you consider the quality.

The chef's skill, talent and imagination come together to produce beautiful tasty dishes. Some unusual combinations, such as gooseberries and pork, show real inventiveness. The service was professional, attentive and unobtrusive. Nicely laid out interior decoration.

Food: outstanding. We were eating off a short Sunday lunchtime menu. Each course was excellent. Particular praise needs to be given to a desert course of rhubarb which exploited that most marmite of items to its best extent. Service: outstanding. Friendly, knowledgeable staff. Each course arriving in a timely way. Restaurant: a lovely traditional feeling restaurant which when examined a little more closely had more of an edge to it than first appeared. My only regret is that we won’t be passing that way for sometime, as I think I found one of new my favourite places.

My husband, son and I very much enjoyed the fish tasting menu last night at Cassons. An 8 course exquisite menu of delicate flavours and surprises. Viv the chef has so much talent which easily rivals the professionals in the ‘great British menu’ ! One criticism which is very small is, I would have liked some background music especially at the beginning of the evening. Once the wine flows it isn’t so important. I would also have liked Viv to come out of the kitchen to take a bow to see how we truly appreciated the skill and effort involved!

Visited on a Saturday evening with friends who had not previously experienced the delights of Cassons and we enjoyed a fantastic evening. The menu was varied without being “too busy” and with just the right amount of options to keep everyone happy. All of the dishes were delicious, well presented and served by the very pleasant team who were attentive without being intrusive. All in all it as another fantastic experience

What a gem this restaurant is! The Scottish taster menu was unbelievable. Viv was again pitch perfect in her pairing and presentation. I can't think of a finer restaurant to eat at.

Can not recommend enough. The service was welcoming and helpful, the surroundings were cosy and relaxed, and the food was amazing! Looked lovely on the plate, as good as any Michelin starred restaurant and tasted fantastic, but was also so interesting to eat as wonderful mixtures and flavours. It's much more of a food experience than just dinner. To top that, it was very reasonably priced and great wine. Can not wait to go again. Lovely chef and front of house team. Thank you

Amazing little restuarant, food was so good, the staff and owners were lovely, couldn’t do enough for you. A real treat, Michelin star food, great value for money. I had some wonderful gluten free rolls during dinner so I asked where they got them from and the chef (Owner) kindly gifted me some as an early Christmas gift. I was so surprised, very grateful and thought how kind that was. Honestly a must try, you won’t regret it. Thanks again Cassons, can’t wait to return!

I was really looking forward to my trip to Cassons with my husband but was very disappointed. The restaurant was very cold and no fires were lit. The scollops were well cooked but were overwhelmed by the ginger slices. The duck was well cooked too but there was a lot of celeriac, very strong pickles and the whole dish was cold. The person next to us sent it back because of the low temperature. The pudding I had was sticky toffee pudding which was delicious but did not need the very strong flavoured ice cream. The bill arrived and I was very embarrassed when the owner pointed out very loudly the tip was not enough. I would not return in a hurry.

Delicious food, great service, an interesting choice of dishes and a wine list that complements them. This is a place that is serious about food and wine and creates a relaxed and comfortable place to enjoy them. Very reasonable set menu prices for food and wine of this quality. This was right up there with the best meals I've eaten anywhere. It was a 60th birthday treat from my partner, and every aspect of food and service was impeccable, from the welcome from the owner (a fount of fascinating stories about the history of the building and the locality) to the efficient, friendly service from the two staff who took care of us throughout our meal. We enjoyed the way in which the menus were left with us , rather than being whipped away in the usual fashion, to allow us to really experience every flavour and ingredient of each of the courses to the full. It's the mark of superlative cooking when you find yourself savouring each mouthful, recognising as one ingredient after the next comes through, and marvelling at the sheer technical perfection of everything.We both had a starter of Selsey crab, beautifully proportioned and balanced with lime, followed by the most wonderful pork cheek for me and halibut with a salmon veloute for my partner. It would have been nice to have been able to choose properly from the extensive wine list, but as I was being chauffered, I stuck to a glass of excellent house Rioja. We finished with a shared quartet of various small puddings - all excellent, again.For the quality of the food, this is an outstanding location at a very reasonable price. Thank you again. Unreservedly, loudly, emphatically recommended.

For my birthday, my partner sent me a list of well reviewed restaurants in and around Hampshire to choose from. After perusing through all the menus, we decided on Cassons for its elegant and well thought out offering (and it's HUGE wine list). To be able to enjoy the night to it's fullest we decided to make our way to the restaurant from Southsea via train and bus, which was quick and easy enough and made it a fun day out. After wandering around some of our favourite pubs in Chichister we arrived at the nearest bus stop (about 5 mins walk from the restaurant), where you then walk along a bit of the A27 feeling a little concerned about the potential noise from the busy road. However, the second we walked in to the restaurant we were greeted by the lovely front of house and all my thoughts of the outside world melted away. The place was warmly lit, welcoming, unassuming and packed full of chatter and the clinking of forks of people enjoying their delicious looking meals. They took us to our table, sat down and were very quickly offered a delicious sounding amuse-bouche, followed by some beautiful, freshly baked bread buns with 2 types of butter. We ordered a bottle of wine. The atmosphere by this point was infectiously merry with large and small groups, couples, laughing, chatting, drinking, making delicious noises at their empty plates. Delightful. My partner ordered the scallops followed by the Hallibut. I ordered the Quail and the Iberian Pork. Now, I could write an entire review about how fantastic all the food was, but instead I'm just going to tell you to go and order the damn pork. I hope the staff got to see our faces as we each took a bite. We both melted like an Irish butter on warm bread and we have not stopped talking about it 5 days later. We'll be coming back for the pork and to try the rest of the menu.

Honestly, one of the most disappointing meals I’ve had. Everything was bland, even the black garlic salt. Nothing was seasoned, there wasn’t any flavour in anything. It’s really not over exaggeration. The place smells like damp, there are cobwebs and marks on all the walls. The crowd on a Friday night at 8pm was generously elderly. Do not recommend. The presentation was excellent, but unfortunately you don’t eat with your eyes. You’ll have a better time at kfc down the road where at least they use salt.

Don't let the exterior fool you. This is really good, high quality food at a good price. The outside is a bit disconcerting as its a bit overgrown and on the side of the A27, and inside could do with a little touch up. But the food makes up for it and the staff are friendly. The served an amuse bouche before we had starters of mackerel and scallops, bit cooked perfectly, and mains of quail and halibut. The fish was particularly excellent, cooked perfectly to flake apart. Do give it a try, the michelin guide stickers are more than deserved and they have an extensive wine list.

Myself and my partner went here for our anniversary dinner.. (the first time we've managed to because of his job) neither of us really knew what to expect. It's top reviewed on Google however their website is so old looking it makes you question the quality... However, huge however, once we got there we were greeted with smiles and kindness. The staff were lovely and friendly. The food is utterly amazing (I fully recommend quail breast) top marks to the chef and fellow staff. When they found out it was our anniversary they gifted us some chocolates, a lovely sentiment. Thank you. Hope to go back again

Usually visit once or twice a year and have never been let down with the quality of the food and friendly service. On this Saturday evening we visited for my birthday and I had the ballotine pigeon with black pudding bonbons that was very good as balanced very well with the artichoke purée and the mustard seeds with a sour cherry gel. I thought maybe the restaurant had peaked too early but then I had the lamb rump with a jus that was just out of this world. We visited a Michelin starred restaurant at Xmas and I had the lamb and this dish is up there with it. My partner also had the Iberian pork pluma with glazed cheek that she also highly recommends. For desert she had the Manuka honey and almond cake with rhubarb three ways which was her star of the show. In addition to accompany the meal they had one of my favourite red wines being the chocolate block that was a very reasonable price.

Great special occasion restaurant

A great little find. My parents recommended dining at Cassons when visiting Chichester. The location wasn’t quite as expected but the food was spectacular and definitely deserving of a Michelin star. Also great value in my personal opinion. I’ve paid far more for far less in other restaurants! I’m sure to visit again.

My partner and I had a fantastic dinner here. It being recommended by his parents who discovered it during a weekend break in Chichester a few months ago. It is in an unusual location, but don’t be deterred, the food is right up there in terms of taste, quality, presentation and value. Would love to go back

Really lovely food - definitely worth the trip out from Chichester. Scallops followed by duck breast were perfectly cooked and beautifully flavoured. The ambience was very traditional, which felt warm and welcoming on a chilly March evening.

We booked with friends for dinner on 02/3/23. We turned up at the restaurant and found it closed. We called their phone number to be answered by the owner/ manager who after we explained apologised and asked us to return the next night for a reduced price dinner. A restaurant of their reputation firstly closed on a Thursday and didn’t have the decency to call us prior to the evening is very poor and bad manners.

This is a Micheline Star Restaurant. It's nice. And quite costly. £180 for 3. My steak was good. Not amazing but good. My Mum (who was celebrating her 70th birthday) had the duck and it was very tough. My vegetarian wife said her food was OK but there was only one V option per course. But the venue is good. Nice atmosphere. Wine is nice and the service excellent. Can't help but think we just got a bit unlucky with the duck.

My only slight criticism is that the place could do with a little redecorating but I imagine after the last couple of years that expenditure isn't a high priority.
