We went as a party of 14 to celebrate a couple of birthdays. The restaurant is part of the WHEATSHEAF pub in Raby. A delightful setting in the middle of the Wirral countryside. There’s a very large car park and large courtyard with a covered seating area. The pub is fairly dark as expected but the converted cow shed is a lovely eating area with a high ceiling and some original features. From the start the staff communicated well via email to accommodate us. We had to preorder our food from the menu. The menu had a good variety of dishes and vegans are catered for. We had 2 vegans in our party and they were able to order a main, side dish and dessert without issues. The children’s menu is limited compared to the adult menu but they put on pizza ovens to provide two traditional pizzas as there were two children who didn’t want the ciabatta pizza on the menu. The children had children meals but adult desserts. Great choice of drinks including 6 cask ales of one was a biscotti porter, two local Brimstage ales plus some more well known ales, Timothy Taylor, Wainwright etc. They had local sourced gin from Heswall. A couple of our party were running late but they were willing to put back the kitchen 1/2 hr to accommodate us. The food was delicious and served at a good pace. Everyone in our party commented how good it was and everyone left full. Every plate was empty despite everyone feeling full which is a credit to the chef. The pub is dog friendly but I didn’t check if the restaurant area was. Highly recommend if you like quality food and drink in country pubs.

Together with two friends my hubby and I had a really lovely evening from beginning to end. The staff, setting, ambiance and excellent food made our evening very special on what wasn’t even a special occasion. We had varied starters King Prawns, Soup, Crab Cakes and baked mushrooms all really lovely. The mains of Hake, Salmon en Croute and a special burger all beautifully cooked and delicious. Wine list top notch. It’s been a while since we’ve been and makes me question why we haven’t returned but we will definitely return soon. Thank you for a lovely evening

Lovely place but we were so disappointed with the lunch as the chips which are a rare treat for us, were awful. They tasted as though they had been cooked 2 days ago and been reheated several times. A small discount to our bill was given but did little to make up for a very disappointing meal with friends.

Obvious that Wirralites have known about this marvellous restaurant for years, judging by occupation of tables at lunchtime, Tuesday. I found it while waiting at Clatterbridge, and doing a map search of pubs nearby. Well worth the research. Marvellous. I had game pie, then chocolate cheesecake with blackberries, both great. Lovely friendly staff. A gem, hope you all don't believe me, I really don't want trouble getting a table in future.

Up on the Wirral visiting my Mum and as we always eat out, we were looking to try somewhere we hadn't been in a while. I remembered The Thatch, and so we are there this evening. I booked by sending an email, and this was confirmed within an hour or so. On arrival we were greeted at the bar and taken through to the Cowshed. We were shown to our table and drinks and food ordered. A really interesting menu, not just run of the mill stuff We had starters and mains. Both courses were stunning. Totally restaurant quality and not only that, but superb, non intrusive service. Hats off to all involved, whatever you are doing, it is working well!

Had a midweek lunchtime meal with my elderly parents. Staff were very attentive and provided a level of service that ensured an efficient and pleasant eating experience that still left you time and space to enjoy it. Food was excellent; the game pie especially was just delightful. Just the right sized portions and beautifully cooked. Second visit here, first in the conservatory and now in the cowshed. I think it will become a regular stop every time I come back to Wirral.

Roast potatoes were awful, veg was dry and beef was more fat than meat. Gravy was spot on and the Yorkshire pudding wasn't bad but left still feeling hungry. Staff were great and service was good, all other meals besides the roast were fine. Hope it improves!

We visited today for a special celebration. The restaurant was warm and cosy and the fire added to the lovely atmosphere. The food was excellent as were the drinks. What makes this place really special is the amazing customer service. We were treated like old friends and nothing was too much trouble. In our opinion this is the best restaurant on the Wirral. Thank you to all the staff for making our evening special.

Pleasant room, friendly attentive staff and excellent local beer - Trappers Hat from Brimstage Microbrewery. However two stars docked for v substandard fish and chips. Portion was v small and fish (haddock) grossly overcooked. Someone in the kitchen wasn't paying attention. Staff apologised but didn't actually DO anything to resolve the matter. Much better food to be had just a couple of miles away in the Fox & Hounds, Barnston. So that's where I'm going next time.

Might have been an off day, but we brought friends here from out of the area for lunch and we left feeling disappointed. We had been here as a couple for dinner a few years back and we had a great experience, but sadly not so much on this occasion. The staff were very young and although they were pleasant, we were left waiting for our mains for quite a long time. I'm not sure whether that was a kitchen or a front of house issue, but it was a little frustrating. When the food arrived, it was just OK. I had a club sandwich but probably could have done better myself (and I am no chef). Also, when walking through the main pub, there was a smell of urine which wasn't pleasant, and all of the venue was quite cold. 2 stars because the staff were friendly and the food was edible.

This pub, restaurant is easily the best I’ve had the good fortune to visit around the country and I visit a lot, as I’m extremely fussy I very rarely set foot in an average pub but if I’m in Cheshire I will visit this establishment as often as I can. The staff are very friendly and efficient and the food is well fantastic is an understatement the main meals are always great but I have to admit that the sandwiches are Devine then you get to the toasted sandwiches well what can I say died and gone to heaven I think if I drive over the border my brain and stomach gangs up on me and scream toasty . The only way to improve the pub is put it on the back of some low loaders and drive it down to Essex then trip advisor will have to give us the chance to score more than five star.

Perhaps we are easily confused or a bit obtuse but for clarity The Cowshed Restaurant forms an integral part of The Wheatsheaf Pub – you walk through the pub itself, its conservatory and into the Cowshed. There are reviews for both on Tripadvisor but what I say here applies equally to the Wheatsheaf – because it’s the same place.

I re-connected with this ‘eclectic gem’ two weeks ago after many years away. Forty years ago it was just the pub fondly known as The Thatch. I say ‘eclectic’ because there’s the original rustic stone floor pub where you can take your dog, this meanders into another carpeted casual room, then again into a bright conservatory style room & then you have the beautiful Cow Shed, oak beamed, bare brick walls, ambient lighting, the wood burner and THE FOOD! I popped in two weeks ago with mum and had by chance a table in the Cow Shed area. We chose from the ‘specials’ & had Sea Bass over smoked haddock kedgeree. I was blown away by the standard of food and service. It was sublime. The portions are huge. Two good size; perfectly cooked Sea Bass fillets over kedgeree, full of fish & egg, perfect consistency & balance of spice. The food is piping hot. The staff are very welcoming, friendly & efficient. It’s a beautiful setting for a cosy or romantic evening meal too. I was so impressed I booked a table by the wood burner for the following week and went last Wednesday. Again choosing from the specials. This time I had cod on garlic mash with samphire and confit shallots ... very decadent. I have to say the presentation each time was excellent & again generous portions. I had this with buttered greens. The main menu offers something for everyone including an excellent range of sharing platters such as ploughmans, garden, meat, fish. Great range of steaks, burgers, toasties, sandwiches & so on. Also there’s plenty of parking which is a bonus. I really can’t recommend this place enough it’s so quaint. Needless to say I will be going back regularly.

Have promised I would visit the Cowshed for a long time. The opportunity arose to dine there with five friends. We just had a main course. The other five guests cleared their plates. I (along with three others) had the fish and chips. It was about £2 dearer than similar establishments. Having started mine I looked at the meals of the others having the same and they looked reasonably good. The fish in my over-cooked batter was almost non-existent. I tried scraping fragments that were stuck to the batter and salvaged about a mouthful. The chips and peas were only OK. I ate them but left the batter. Had we been there as a couple I would have brought it to the attention of the staff but being in a group and having waited almost an hour to be served (we had booked) I was loathe to say anything. Had it been replaced I would have been eating after everyone else and delayed our departure. I accept when starters are not ordered there can be a delay serving just a main course.

Most of the food was poor - horribly tough lamb rump, tasteless chips, grubby looking mixed vegetables and measly portions of chilli prawns with stringy greens. Just one menu on table, this appears to be standard as a table for 6 had one menu too. Food and drink ordered at bar. I believe toasties are a speciality so I opted for one. The food received was not what I would consider a toastie. It was 2 pieces of toast with a filling added, not toasted with bread. It was ok. My partner and I went for an anniversary supper on a very busy Saturday night. The staff were working at top speed but service was great, friendly, timely and with a smile. The Cowshed is in a nice location, has a pleasant dining area and serves a variety of beers and wines at reasonable prices. Sadly the food didn't do the place justice. My starter of beetroot mousse with stilton cheese was a tasteless pink blancmange with a small slab of stilton. really not nice. Maybe crusty bread would have made it more palatable, but slices off a fairly unimaginative loaf brought nothing to the party. My partners crab was, he said, tasteless too. Both of us plumped for venison burgers and chips. the burger was dense and moderately taste but the 'onion marmalade' was a disappointment. I suspect that the chips were oven chips. More in hope than expectation, I ordered dessert. The brownie was passable but dried, from reheating, on the edge.

Visited this lovely old restaurant/pub mid week and had an excellent meal. We chose to eat a light lunch and, amoung other things, there was a good selection of generously filled sandwiches and warm meat filled batches to choose from. We also shared a portion of chips which we all agreed, were cooked to perfection. It was a very enjoyable lunch, the staff were excellent, friendly and cheerful and the place was busy, making for a good atmosphere. Definitely will be eating there again.

We had booked a table in advance and were shown to our table when we arrived. The menu choice was good, especially the gluten free options. The quality of food was excellent. The service was just right and we weren't rushed.

Went for Sunday lunch as a party of nine including two children and had a lovely meal. Service very good and although other parts of the pub and restaurant were very busy we were located in the cowshed restaurant which seemed much more relaxed. Good choice of starters, Sunday roasts and puddings, including some nice specials. Food was very nice and will definitely return!

Red currant reduction on the beef medallion was too strong but the rest of the meal, chicken liver pate and devilled kidney starters and venison main were all tremendous. Lovely atmosphere in the cowshed and good service.

Having dinner here previously, we booked a table for seven for lunch on Monday. We arrived in drive and drabs from 12.30 with all arriving by 12.40 while waiting at our booked table we enjoyed a pint of their excellent range of beers. Our order was taken at 1.00. By 1.40 we were still waiting. We notice a couple at another table who arrived and ordered after us were halfway through their meal. When this was brought to the staffs attention suddenly our meals began to arrive at 1.50. I was served at 2.00pm. my meal was the pie of the week served with chips and peas. It was barely cooked pale chips and no browning on the pastry. At least we did get an apology and a discount off the price, but to receive my undercooked lunch at 2.00pm. for a 12.30 booking is not acceptable.

Had the prawn sandwich and hubby had the steak, caramelised onion and blue cheese fal, both were very tasty. Cold drinks in the beer garden made it just perfect and the Titanic Plum Porter just can't be beat.

Last minute lunch to take advantage of the sunny weather - beach seating outside and it was glorious.Had the seafood platter which was simply lovely, others had the black pudding with cheese & bacon toastie which apparently was epic and as were the warm rare breed sausage barms. No complaints from any of us. Too full for dessert, this time. The beers are also good here, apparently.Lovely afternoon experienced here, and would definitely recommend and return.

Visited for the first time for lunch with friends. The location is easy to find and there is plenty of parking. The pub looks lovely with lots of hanging baskets and thatched roof. Inside there are different areas including a very old part of the pub. The conservatory and cowshed eating area are clean and comfortable. Some of the chairs are quite low but there are cushions available! There are also lots of outside tables in sheltered, attractive surroundings. Service was efficient, friendly and helpful, without feeling rushed. The lunchtime menu had lots of interesting choices with locally sourced ingredients. The portions were sensibly sized and tasted delicious. Wine choices good and reasonably priced. We had an excellent lunch and would definitely recommend.

We visited the pub not the restaurant. Popped in after a walk with the dog. Needless to say it's dog friendly, with dogs being allowed on all hard floor areas. It's a beautiful little proper country pub. Rustic but clean and comfy. Nice big car park to the side. It was a lovely sunny day when we went and we wished we had sat outside a little. I can imagine with the fires lit in winter it would be very snug and cosy. We ordered a veggie plater and fish plater (pictured) with extra chips and a couple of pints of Guinness. The menu stated platters were for either one as a main or to share. We were certainly very full after! From memory veggie platter included - veggie sausage, cheese melts, beetroot, mushroom with crumb, 2 slices garlic bread, a shot glass of soup, salad with tomatoes in the vine, onion chutney, piccalilli and little gherkins. At approx £11. The husband had the fish platter and was equally laden with tasty nibbles as pictured for roughly the same £11. So both, chips and 2 pints £34. It was tasty and we were full up so reckon it was priced about right. The toasted sandwiches on the menu also looked good. A mention also goes out to the toilets that were surprisingly modern. Not like the usual spider infest stable loos of some country pubs. The staff were friendly. Good vibes. We were very impressed and will be definitely going back.

Not only was I pleased but our friends were so so delighted. They loved everything about it from its beautiful character to it wonderful food, (glut free as well), not to forget it s great choice of wine and Champagne. Called in for food today, can safely say I won't be calling back in a hurry. The food was tepid and overly greasey.

Had a bad experience here a few years ago but tried again tonight after a good few recommendations. My opinions could not have changed more. The atmosphere was on point, lively yet comfortable. Bar staff were extremely helpful. The food was great - beautifully presented, hot, and fresh. One of the best fish pies, and all reasonably priced. The highlight of our visit was our friendly waitress with whom we had a lovely chat and couldn’t do enough for us. We will definitely be back - well done to all the staff.
