Beautiful pub with really friendly and capable staff. We had Sunday lunch; starters mains and desserts. Excellent food in every course... home-cooked, fresh, inspiring, well-done and HOT. We had the gurnard risotto and roasted veg soup to start; both were excellent. The beef with trimmings and the hake for main; both excellent. plum pud for dessert - wonderful crumble! Lovely flavors and presentation, great atmosphere and helpful staff. They were busy, but it didn't affect the food or the service. Great value for money. We'll be back to enjoy their lovely garden in the Summer.

I’m afraid this pub was decidedly disappointing. I don’t enjoy being negative but the service in this place is the embodiment of barely average. The building and ambience were good but the barman was joyless and unengaging. The food was relatively expensive with portion sizes verging on the mean. For those who are unfamiliar with long stretches of country lanes (sans passing places) I would question whether the effort of a visit was worth it.

A beautiful haven in the midst of the Herefordshire countryside. We stayed b & b and also lunch and dinner during our long weekend. We have known this charming old pub for many years and come back, time after time. Comfortable rooms, delightful bars and food, glorious food! Highly recommended.

The approach to the pub is via some single track lanes, the pub itself is In a nice quiet location. The pub inside is old and dated which adds to the character, the garden would benefit from some comfier seating rather than bench seating. The food was average, burger wasn't one of the best I'd had, the cottage chips are just potato slices, again just average. The cutlery was presented in a white holder with the knife and folk end touching the bottom of the dirty holder, not very hygienic. Slightly annoying the fact that it has the resident dog Ruby wondering around the pub begging for customers food. On the website it states all dogs must be kept on a lead in the pub, I can only assume this is so Ruby can rome freely. It's a strange one, it's rated highly on TripAdvisor but I can see loads of things that need improvement.

Well where can I start with the Cottage of Content. Myself and some friends were recently celebrating our birthdays and we called Richard and Helen with a very unreasonable request of accommodating 35 guests for lunch in just a few weeks’ time. To my delight, they were more than happy to have us visit and boy am I glad we did. Upon arrival we were welcomed with the sweet aromas of freshly cooked food and some mouthwatering real ales on tap. And not to mention the resident dog who was always there to offer a friendly face around the place. The quality of the food was superb, a few of my friends really did have the munchies so you can imagine their delight when four delicious burgers arrived to quench their hunger straight away. I also can’t not mention the cheese board which was a fantastic way to end the meal. While Richard was in the kitchen skating away, Helen was entertaining the whole group and creating an atmosphere I can only describe as absolutely electric. The ladies serving us our food and drinks were so kind and no job was either too small or too large. There was also a lovely horse in the field opposite which really gave the place an authentic country field. Top marks for that. A huge thanks from us and we simply cannot wait to visit next time! We have been regular guests at this iconic Herefordshire pub but, for various reasons, this was our first visit for more than four years. Would it be as welcoming as we remembered? Would the food be as good? Would the ambiance have suffered from the impact of COVID? From the moment we walked in, it was obvious we need not have worried. A friendly welcome and then an excellent early dinner - a spicy cauliflower pie and a vegan burger followed by one of the best crumbles I have ever had. After a refreshing night's sleep a delicious breakfast and the scene was set for the rest of our too-short stay. Helen and Richard are the perfect hosts and their young staff efficient and friendly. The Cottage makes no secret of being a dog-friendly pub. Some people may not be so keen on eating in a space shared with pets and working dogs - worry not, just ask to eat in the adjacent dining room.

We were passing through Holme Lacey saw the sign and rang to book for the same evening. It took a long time to answer however a very nice lady took the booking for us. We turned up at the pub at the agreed time and there appeared to be no staff at the bar. After about three or four minutes a member of staff appeared no acknowledgment at all to me waiting and grumpily served another group who had been waiting. At no time was I acknowledged, no I will be with you, nothing. So after 10 minutes we left very disappointed and if this was a typical reception then I would avoid this establishment at all costs. Was it busy no and perhaps there is a reason

We drove here from little tarrington ... lovely drive through beautiful countryside. Arrived and a nice rustic pub. Food for us was DISAPPOINTING .. the quantity was poor especially on my husbands dinner who had pork 3 ways. His pork was 1/2 centimetres thick and very small , one sausage and 1 thin slice of black pudding for £20 !! I'm afraid not acceptable. We did mention it to staff and the ethos was .. mains are small in the hope you will order a dessert. But our psychology is a small main course equals a small dessert which we refused to have. I had fillet of fish, small again but nicely cooked. I see they had a best award in 2017 ... I would not travel far to revisit.. on arrival with it bring so quaint... I thought it would be a good gift to give my son in law for a bday get away ... but have decided against it. So sorry to say this x

Seeing as we were not even a 30 second walk away we managed to book a table (thank you for squeezing us in, although we were the first guests for about 30 minutes when we arrived at 6pm). Friendly welcome, decent selection of beers on pump (was a bit warm when it arrived but ? if it was meant to be, some beers don’t agree being served cold). Absolutely a hidden gem in terms of the food and presentation, if I was really picky I would say the portion sizes were a tad small for what we ordered but for another it’s perfect, and the crumble was a perfect size. It is a traditional English pub - quaint, cosy, welcoming and comfortable. However, the usual ‘pub grub’ has been replaced with an interesting menu and beautifully prepared food. My seafood risotto starter and Dover Sole main were reasonably priced, perfectly cooked and presented well. A small but decent wine list provided an array of suitable matches. A great meal served by friendly staff. Would recommend for couples, families or friends. A cracking find just South of Hereford.

Warm welcome from front of house, lovely outdoor seating, delicious food and drink and prompt service. The ham egg and (cottage)chips was spot on, as was the mixed ploughman’s. However the deserts were amazing too (the panacotta with pink peppercorn shortbread was Michelin standard if you ask me!) . We only went for a light lunch but stayed 2 hours and had two courses. I hope they manage to recruit some loyal, decent staff soon. I know there’s a shortage of hospitality workers at the moment, but anyone looking for work would feel proud to represent this place. Set in a rural village, the look and feel of the place is totally charming inside and out. We arrived on a very wet Friday night to a lovely roaring log fire. The pub wasn't overly busy, only for a number of locals coming and going so we had a large table in the bar area as we had our dog with us they are restricted to the bar, but that was completely fine. You may need to book normally on a Friday night, there was a lot of flooding on some of the narrow roads leading to the pub which may have one of the reasons we got in. The young girl serving at the bar and taking table food orders was very friendly and efficient, much appreciated. We had three courses and a couple of drinks and all food was piping hot, presented beautifully, good portion sizes and tasted absolutely delicious. You always know you are on to a good thing when you look through the menu and struggle to narrow your shortlist down as it all sounds delicious. All the choices were not your standard pub fayre with the chef adding his/her considerable skill and imagination to the presentation and flavour combinations. What’s even better is that when the food comes out you don’t look at your eating companions dishes and feel short changed on your own. They were all beautifully presented and very tasty. We all had a selection of starters, mains and desserts and none of us were disappointed. Peace descended over the table as the cutlery was put to good use with the frequent break in silence caused by the contented sounds of food being thoroughly enjoyed. For 3 couples the cost for food and drink averaged at £39 pp.We loved the Cottage of Content and will very much look forward to our next visit. So if you are in the Hereford area, do look it up and I’m sure you (like us) won’t be disappointed.

The Cottage of Content is a rural pub with no passing trade. It is a destination that you have to find, but it is worth finding.

We stayed here recently for a family wedding. We stayed for two nights, and were very impressed! The landlady was lovely. The staff were really friendly, nothing was too much trouble. The food was delicious! We had breakfast both days and an evening meal, also the wedding breakfast. Couldn’t fault a thing. Brilliant chef. We had a lovely big room and the beds were so comfortable. Would love to return one day.

The food at this lovely country pub was excellent. We ordered one portion of the seasonal veg between three of us and it was just the right amount. It's a little pricey for a pub but, based on our experience, would say that it was restaurant quality food. The Grand Marnier chocolate mousse dessert ordered from the specials board was more like a ganache but actually we preferred it like that and there was plenty of Grand Marnier in it! There was a good selection of ales and ciders and the staff were pleasant and friendly. Our sat nav took us down a couple of scary lanes that really were narrower than our car (hence the scratches on it now) so would advise that if you see one of the brown signs, follow that rather than the sat nav.

Not the best fish and chips I have had, fish batter was a bit greasy and chips were not chips, any where else they would be called saute potatoes. Just say what they really are chips are longer. Not much tartare sauce either a very small pot for the size of the plate. Place is very charming though, service was good.

We managed to arrived to our holiday destination a day early, as our holiday cottage was close to the Cottage of Content and we had already booked our evening meal there, we managed to get 3 lovely rooms for the night for myself and 2 friends at this beautiful old pub! The owners were fantastic, the evening meal and breakfast delicious. I can highly recommend this to anyone travelling to Herefordshire!

Deep in south Herefordshire country lanes about eight miles north east of Ross on Wye. Lovely beer garden. Not too much parking. Very good Sunday lunch with plenty of choice although the Yorkshire Pudding was more like a cake, a bit different. Perhaps now more of a restaurant than a pub with chefs, not cooks. But a varied menu with some good real ales (Hobsons was excellent) but no real ciders.... Recommend booking a table in advance if eating.

Lovely pub/restaurant set in a wonderful part of the Herefordshire countryside. A very old building with loads of character and a very cosy feel. The food was excellent with a varied selection on offer and at reasonable prices, I had the pork selection and my wife the lamb, both of which were excellent both in presentation and in taste. A good selection of wine and beer to boot. Our only slight complaint would be that as the staff were obviously under pressure, there was little time for the real personal touch, but given that they were a bit rushed, the food was still served in good time with a smile! Will look forward to visiting again soon.

We live locally but haven't been to the cottage of content for many years. A little difficult to find but the brown tourist information road signs that provide directions to the pub make it a lot easier to find than it was years ago. The pub is situated in an idyllic, quiet country location by a small stream that flows into the river wye and is a classic country pub and there is adequate parking. Our meal was excellent and the only criticism was that the service was a little slow but this was understandable as the landlady explained they were short staffed at the moment, although this is something they are trying to rectify. However, the landlady and one waitress were working hard to provide a good service and so we felt we couldn't be too critical, it must be difficult recruiting to such an out of the way place. Otherwise an excellent experience!

Characterful pub with accompanying rooms. A 'gem of a place' in a wonderful 'get away from it all' location, attentive staff and some of the most delicious food 'to boot'. Six of us stayed for two evenings and nothing disappointed (a small issue regarding early morning noise from the bar area was accepted and recompensed which only added to the overall feeling of goodwill). Evening meals were outstanding throughout and breakfast cooked to order. Five stars.

That was the comment from one of us, 6 visitors for lunch today. The food was so good she thought she didn't want to compete. Between us we had 5 different mains, all excellent and so varied with unusual but delightful tastes even on standard(ish) dishes.

We had lunch at the cottage of content today for my father's birthday. Booked a table and inevitably some of us were late (to be fair they travelled from Exeter. We had a long lazy lunch but at no time were we made to feel rushed. The landlady was an excellent host and the food was superb. We also ate Sunday lunch here a few weeks back and it was the best Sunday roast I have had in a pub. Great location too. Highly recommended.

We visited for a family meal and although the food was nice the service was very slow (only two waitresses for a very busy restaurant). The worst thing about the cottage of content is the landlady who was exceptionally abrupt and rude to paying customers. May have been due to being very busy but maybe they should accept less bookings if they don’t have enough staff to handle the quantity of tables.

The menu is superb, with plenty of variety and imaginative combinations. The beers and wines were very interesting and the ales were in good condition. Our room was charming, but a bit basic. Breakfast was slightly disappointing with very little in the way of fresh fruit or healthy options.

Second recent trip after friends booked meal but again the meal was poor. Chicken starter was minuscule and lukewarm. Duck breast main course was tough and cold. Very disappointed and would not recommend. Would have complained on the night but did not wish to spoil ambience of the evening out with friends.

Beautiful scenic spot, absolutely stunning. Dog friendly. Food was amazing and atmosphere good too. Boat was running as water was too high but didn’t matter to us!

Rude, extremely disappointing, shocking and disrespectful staff! We arrived after making a booking the day before. I booked 2 Adults, 1 child aged 2. The booking itself was pleasant. We got slightly lost, rang in and again very pleasant. Arrived 7 minutes late and walked into a very ‘local’ pub feel. All eyes on us. We were told by the bar person that they were glad we found them. A woman appeared and looked at my Grandson and commented ‘we don’t have highchairs’ I commented that I’d booked ahead with a child on the booking? She said she would go down in the cellar and dust something suitable to bring up then asked me if I had a chair in my car???!!!! We approached the bar and I said I was confused as I’d booked a child ahead of coming. I was ignored, I said once again and the younger woman behind the bar looked at me and in a slightly raised voice utttered ‘well, yes she’s gone to get you something hasn’t she!!’ Based on this experience I told my Friend we were leaving as being treated like this was way beyond acceptable. I wasn’t happy and I let it be known! My Friend and I were left shocked and felt we had been treated appallingly by 2 extremely rude women. Whilst we were putting my Grandson in the car the older women came out and further patronised us with her offering of a dusted off cellar chair and we told her that her colleague was vile and it had gone beyond the chair. She walked off. Having read through the reviews I can see hands have changed and so this may be why I didn’t receive the reputation I had heard of. I have the feeling they felt they were above us! I’m not easily impressed so their Morgan cars and gold large Baroque chairs only further deepens my suspicions that they think they’re better 🤣🤣

As we entered the lovely lady came to us with menus. Food was brought to us on hot plates and presented very nicely. We all enjoyed what we had. Thankyou will return.
