The cafe is situated right behind the main historic dockyard reception area and has a great view out towards HMS Warrior and Spinniker Tower. Although there’s a large restaurant further inside the dockyard, a number of other cafes are closed due to the current Covid situation but it’s quieter here as most visitors head straight on to the dockyard attractions. Not sure about opening times as it closed for a period in the afternoon whilst we were there - not sure if it was due to staffing or some other issue?

My wife & i visited here in April 2019 around 13.30 in afternoon. It was quite busy but not heaving as it is quite a big place. Tables were not being cleared, drinks had been spilt on the floor & not cleaned up especially around the waste bins where people are supposed to put their rubbish, a lot of it was on the floor as the bin was overflowing. Trays full of sandwich wrappers & empty cups were being left on the work top. Worst of all for such a big place, NO TOILETS!!!!!

We visited this outlet midweek so it wasn't too busy. There were however too many tables that had not been cleared. After I had ordered I was informed that they did not accept the "Costa card" I asked why not and was told that they "just don't" I can understand the small outlets not taking the card, but my local supermarket has a Costa machine from which I can scan a bar-code to get the points. I just don't see why a proper Costa outlet will not take the Costa card.

I have been tio loads of different Costas up and down the country, as well as abroad and this one wasn't an awful lot different with the usual array of cakes and other goodies. The coffee is always great here, and this was just as I have come to expect. The setting is slightly different to your usual Costa of course, being part of the historic waterfront area and with views of some of the shps, which is what makes this one unique.

I ordered an Americano/Lungo coffee here which was disgusting and which I left half untouched. When will they learn that adding hot water to the coffee in an amount that they decide right is not the way to do it.. my coffee was unbelievably watery not made any better by being told to help myself to the (COLD) milk which just made it an expensive tepid watery 'drink'.. I can't call it coffee! Unfortunately this is common to Costa's.. not just here. People come here because it's convenient and they either don't appreciate what a good cafe is or there isn't any better that they know of .. which is sad. Never going again.

The address for this branch is somewhat mixed on the heading, but assuming the one inside the Dockyard, then, with large windows and views of HMS Warrior and the Spinnaker Tower, it's geographical position cannot be faulted. The reviews are very mixed for this particular outlet which I imagine is a franchise. When we visited today it was quite busy with visitors to the Museum and in the sunshine, the experience was good. The Cortado was Excellent, although only cardboard cups were available. The welcome was good and service speedy, although with the number of staff available, table clearance could have been better. What did not impress however, was the staff job application loudly taking place several tables from us, which enabled us to learn of the history and qualifications of the applicant and the terms and conditions of the job vacancy. Not very professional.

Cold Saturday morning, girlfriend and I popped in for a coffee early whilst shopping, when asked which type of coffee we would like I requested strong, it wasn't, that busy and my partners skinny latte arrived, mine was short and needed a top up? I waited patiently and when it arrived went to our table, my drink can only be best described as hot steamed milk, there wasn't the slightest hint of there being any coffee in it so I approached the young manager who was at the counter and aired my views, the manager tried to convince me that a latte was meant to taste that way but declined to taste the drink even with a straw, I asked for a normal coffee as all I wanted was for it to taste of coffee! he insisted on making me another and would bring it over, what arrived was the same weak hot frothy milk drink which was disappointing to say the least, My partner had already finished hers and I could not stomach what had been brought over so we left. It did Costa but it definitely wasn't Coffee!

I visited while at the docks, and my overall impression was that the place was badly organised and needed to get it's act together. This is because the drink on my receipt was not in fact what I ordered ... I questioned the staff on this and they said they do that with everyone because the drink is the same price anyway. What's the point in giving out receipts when they don't even name your order? Would make the situation quite difficult in the event of an order inaccuracy or customer complaint. The drink did take quite a while to be made.I ordered a small mint cooler but was given medium ... this may seem good but it could have easily been the other way around and everyone got a free upgrade apart from one person, which is by no means fair. I also asked the staff about this and they basically said "oh well, you get a free upgrade".The mint cooler wasn't great ... they were perhaps a little generous with the mint flavouring, giving it a slightly unnatural taste at first whereas they were quite sparing with the whipped cream on top. Shards of ice could be tasted throughout as well as several huge cubes at the bottom, clearly under-blended. Disappointing. Some chocolate sauce on top would have also be nice. The loyalty scheme is not promoted well enough (staff didn't ask if I had a loyalty card and there were none to pick up), and I did note a couple of flies around the coffee machines in addition to quite a few dead flies in the fly zapper which was clearly ineffective due to the volume of flies nearby.Having said this, I did like the chocolate caramel shortbread and the friendly staff. Overall, items were well priced and good value, although I didn't know why the price was the same for take-out and eat in as this isn't usually the case which meant that I had to pay the eat in price for the take out shortbread.

As I was catching the overnight ferry to Caen/Ouistreham I thought what better start than to get there a bit early, buy a newspaper in the kiosk and get a meal as it's a bit late to eat once I get on the boat.First of all the kiosk was closed, so no magazine or paper and the only place to eat was Costa which must be the dreariest place ever. What passes for fine dining is something plonked in a bit of cardboard that doesn't prevent the grease from oozing through. Most tables were piled high with previous customers dirty crockery so I had to try to find somewhere to clear one table in order to attempt some comfort to eat and drink. "Could I please have my hot drink in a proper cup instead of a re-cycled piece of cardboard." I pleaded."Sorry, we've run out of cups." I was told.I am not surprised they had run out of cups, they were all piled on the few available tables. What has our civilised country come to when we have to eat and drink out of folded paper or cardboard? Can we not have a plate, cutlery and a cup and saucer?I avoid Costa in my High Street as I would rather give business to smaller tea shops who at least let you have a proper cup, and this is the one and only time I use the one at Portsmouth Ferry Port. The new port facility must have cost millions so it's a pity it has not got a decent place to have a snack before sailing.Bad show Costa.
