Visited the Coopers Tavern with friends Saturday afternoon after it was recommended to me as an old fashioned friendly Boozer selling good beer. Sure enough it was exactly that ,friendly comfortably rustic and regularly visited by adults who were in on the secret. After two pork pies and four pints of 'Wandering Monk' ale we left and I was at home asleep by 6.30

Gave this pub a great review 4 years ago but must say I feel they let us down last night. Got to the pub, 4 of us, about 7pm on a Saturday night and found a table and bought drinks. At 7.15pm a bar person leant over the table and plonked a sign at the far end of the table saying 'reserved from 7.30', and never said a word. We queried it and were basically told we had 15 minutes and then we would have to move. Whoever heard of a reserved sign in a pub and basically told to move in a few minutes. Not very user friendly and terrible service.

There are some very good traditional pubs still remaining in Burton ( The Elms, the Burton Bridge Tavern, the Roebuck for example), but this was the pick of the bunch for me. A traditional old school multi room set up with a small bar room at the back that has four ale hand pumps and then several other beers from the barrel behind the bar. Have to queue to get served at busy times but that is a small price to pay for the impressive beer lineup. Although it’s a Joules Brewery pub, it’s one of the very few allowed guest ales and for my visit, alongside Joules Pure Blonde, Pale Ale, Slumbering Monk and Moon Madness Mild on the four pumps there was Oakham Ales Relativity, Salopian Golden Thread and Bass straight from the cask. Food comes in the form of large cobs ( as I believe they are referred to in these parts) sizeable pork pies and enormous scotch eggs. I went for a black pudding scotch egg and it was just the stomach liner to soak up an excellent pint of the Moon Madness Mild. No juke box, no TV, just great beer and convivial conversation.

We were in Burton for the first time on our anniversary. This pub was my favourite that we visited. From the warm interaction with the person serving, to the delicious beer, to the cosy nature of the place, to the brilliant old signs, it was a treat. It was wonderful to be able to have a pint of Bass here. Highly recommended.

Dropped into the Coopers at lunch time . A lot of changes since my last visit 20 years ago, it is bigger. Apparently the house next doorway bought and so rooms have been added but some things have stayed the same. The snug still has beer from the wood and some additional hand pump beers have been added. Instead of coconut matting covering the barrels now have fancy custom made jackets. Hope it will not be another 20 years before I visit.

Believed to have been built in the early 19th century for the Bass 'Brewer in Charge', later becoming a store for special malts and then, in 1826, a store for Bass 'imperial Stout' before becoming a sampling room and unofficial brewery tap until licensed in 1858. A myriad of small different shaped rooms, with a wide range of brewing memorabilia, sold to Tuns Taverns in 2005, a precursor to Jules Brewery founded in 2008 , the pub has chalked up several local and regional CAMRA Pub-of-the-Year awards and serves thre three regulat darught ales, Ball, Joules Pale Ale and Joules Slumbering Monk as well as number of changing ales. An interesting pub, well worth a visit for th atmospher, the history and, not least, for the beer choice.

Called in here on a rainy Friday dinner time. Received a warm welcome from both the barman, and the open fire burning fiercely in the grate. Smiling friendly and above all knowledgeable service from Carl made for a most pleasurable visit. The option to try before you buy was well appreciated. It’s the wood from the trees scenario here, what to have, what to forego. Also, the home made black pudding scotch eggs were outstanding.

Been in a few times now after a recommendation from our tour guide at the National Brewing Museum. A really traditional pub with friendly staff and a great range of well kept beer. We've been when its been empty during the week and also last Sunday when it was very busy with a decent band playing. Clearly its very popular with the locals but I would certainly recommend seeking it out. Haven't tried the food yet as usually we're full after having a pork pie in the Devonshire one stop before the Coopers!

Great to see the barrels lined up with a very good selection of beers and beer styles and the beer served straight from the barrel. We came here on a beer trip to Burton....at first there was a long queue so we went back later and got served after a short wait....obviously a popular pub with locals. The first thing you notice is there is no bar as such.....a few kegs on a back shelf and a few hand pumps to the side. It seems there is a lot of history to this pub going back to when it was originally a grain store...….great beer, friendly atmosphere, will definitely go back

Finished a walk with the dogs and ducked in for a pint. Don't know what I drank as I just asked the helpful woman behind the bar to choose something but it was very nice. Also ended up being tempted by the pies so had a very top notch pork pie with a touch of pickle. Mid way through the pie and pint another staff member came round offering the drinkers a hot sausage roll so I had to try one of them too... ( It was very small so not to piggish)

Coopers' Tavern is a basic, unpretentious little boozer in Burton, but one with a more than decent selection of real ales on hand pumps. Great little place, but the refurb and expansion has done it no favours. Some people like it, some don't . They did well to retain some of the feel of the old place, but lost a little in the process. Yes, its bigger, and it was probably needed as its a popular pub.. but the expansion has only created another 8-10 seats at the most.

One of the quirkiest little pubs you'll come across. Very good selection of cask beers with Joule's on regularly and also rotating guest beers. Some beers are hand-pulled, others taken straight from the cask. There is no real bar, just a bit of a shelf. There is a friendly, warm atmosphere and the hosts Mary & Rob do a great mod, as do all the staff. Pork pies and cheese is the perfect accompaniment to your pint. Oh and try the Green Monkey....

What a fantsatic pub. A friend had recommended this to us and we were not disappointed. Its like going back 50 years. The ale was plentiful and varied and the pork pies were tasty and good value. Hand pulled and gravity ales. This is a MUST to visit if you are in Burton and then next door to The Apna for a top class curry.I will be back.

Unfortunately the stout types ales that they used to serve here at weekends, seem has though they have disappeared as there is only 1 to choose from.My hubby has left is pint because it was off (not once but three times)! Kept going back because we like the atmosphere and locals are greatShame that we have to find somewhere else to drink!

I visited this pub recently with friends over a weekend - it is outstanding. A wonderful atmosphere and a cosy old-world feel. The locals are really friendly and the selection of ales straight from the cask brilliant. We visited on consecutive nights. One of the best I have been to - we will be back next year !

Hyperbole stolen from the wrong brewer given the location, but I love this place. Great beer, interesting history and perfect boozer atmosphere. All that and you can take your pint to the Indian next door which is byo. So... if Carlsberg did pubs... they'd be like the Coopers (which, of course, doesn't serve...)

Twice we have tried to visit this pub, based on recommendations from friends. The website said the opening time was 1500 hours, but on arrival the notice on the door stated 1600 hours. Not bothering again. Not recommended for a lunchtime drink. Ironic in a brewery town!!

Unusual and quite small but wonderful character. Everyone in the party enjoyed their pints and went back for many more. Quite a few straight from the barrel. Decent prices and a cheese board selection which I saw a few enjoying. Worth a dedicated visit.

This is an ale house, don't expect posh wines and spirits. If you are in Burton you already know to go here so this review means nothing. But thanks to landlady Mary (I think), her partner and the staff for a bonkers two days of jovial drinking and merriment. Oh, and have the cheese board with pork pie, too much!

Come here regularly and couldn't speak a bad word about it. The interior is beautifully preserved with modern advertising and features tastefully incorporated. If you like your pubs covered in wood, closed in and with a great atmosphere then this is the pub for you. There's a great range of beers on, with Joules and Bass as regulars, and often visits from Salopian, Castle Rock and Sarah Hughes beers. These are mostly served straight from the cask, in keeping with tradition, with a few on handpumps. They do also offer lager and craft keg for those that prefer them. Mary, the landlady, is particularly friendly and will happily talk to you about beers and local life. Not to be missed for any traveller!

Was looking forward to visiting this pub after reading previous reviews and as a football fan following Coventry City in our first visit to Burton Albion. Firstly despite ringing ahead to find out if it was away fan friendly and being assured it was we arrived to find it closed until 2pm no good when kick off was at 2.30! No matter we thought, will call after the game. On arriving after the match which we won we could see the pub was finally open. Great - except for the bouncer/landlord with his clipboard who rudely told us as away fans we were not allowed in! Think he needs to work on his bonhomie! Can't leave a decent review based on the pub itself so will leave it based on the attitude of the guy on the door. Think twice if you are a footy fan looking for somewhere to drink in Burton!

If you are in Burton this is a must. Extensive range of Ales & Ciders. A Joules house but always has many guests (usually around 12). Local cheese & pork pies (again locally made) served all day. Live music on Sunday afternoons.I love this place with its friendly staff & locals. Judging by all the award certificates on the wall then this little pub is a gem.5 mins from railway station makes it handy. If you only have time to visit one Burton pub then this is it.

Sunday lunch was fabulous. Really tasty, best I’ve had in a very long time. The pub looks nothing from the outside, so we visited based on good Trip Advisor reviews and weren’t disappointed. Will definitely return. Price was excellent value for money.

The menu has changed which is good, however when coming you have to call every time to ensure they are actually serving food, as been turned away a couple of times as they were not serving food Anyway we went in May 2023, the food was fantastic as usual, all home cooked, absolutely top notch. The Bangor burger has changed and is even bigger, in fact it defeated me I could not eat it Very reasonable on the prices, overall excellent and will come back time and time again
