Coffee#1 Portswood in Southampton

I had 2 flat white coffees and a piece of cake the person who served me saw I had a ten pound note and said that's the price usually pay nomore than 9 big price rise in one week

All the staff I've interacted with here seem great but the nice man with glasses is always so attentive and lovely. I'm always pleased if he's working.

Yesterday I met up with my best friend who is seventy in Coffee #1 in Portswood. We regularly meet up in the coffee shop and when I finished my coffee an eager young lady cleared it up. Ten minutes later she came around again and asked my friend for his cup but he was still drinking and I made a joke about she must fancy him. (At the moment his face is covered in red blotches). Half an hour later as we got up to leave the young lady harangued me saying 'And don't come back'. I was shocked and went directly to the counter and asked to see the manager. I explained what had happened and the manager said that she was new and had only worked at Coffee1 a couple of months. The Young lady who followed me to the office said that she was only 17 and a Minor and that I should be ashamed of myself. As I was leaving the young lady again shouted 'And don't come back' in front of the manager and a colleague who both told her to stop and return to the office. 30 minutes later I returned to speak to the manager. The young lady was still in the office and the manager apologised.

To the area manager Dan , you are as much use as a chocolate teapot !!! Rob deserved the manager position at Portswood, but his face doesn’t fit for your liking. Get a grip! I suggest you look on Amazon for a book of how to treat others ,You have continuously lost all your good staff here, when will you be able to figure that out ? I look forward to you visiting the store next , if you can manage that more than twice a year that is.

I asked for salted caramel but they said they weren't doing it anymore so the lovely man made me a concoction of salted pretzel and caramel and then let me try it to see if I liked it! It was delicious! Thank you so much :)

Couldn’t have more than a quarter of my flat white, this stuff is evil. Overextracted, very bitter and very acidic. Lift up the cap and I can see this disgusting black foam at the top. What a waste of coffee, good equipment and money. Didn’t complain or ask for another, this put me off coffee for the day. Never getting coffee here again. Maybe a panini, they’re quite good.

Went into Coffee#1 in Portswood whilst in the area visiting family. First impressions were good and felt reassured by cleanliness and Covid safety measures. We received a lovely greeting from Liam who went out of his way to make us feel welcome and took the time to customise our order. Really enjoyed the coffee and the atmosphere and will look forward to returning

The female staff do a decent brew but the male staff there seems to rush, even when it's dead in there. I know what the other poster meant about face masks, they are very ott and masks wont save you from this covid scam anyway. The Shirley branch is much better, best coffee no 1 in Southampton IMO.

I go to Coffee #1 Portswood everyday before work. My coffee has always been perfect, even when I make strange requests. Since COVID I have felt really safe entering the store, and the staff have put me and ease and made the experience as close to how it was prior. I usually go when Liam is working, and he always makes time to speak to every customer, while keeping up with demand and providing great service. Something else important to mention, is that I have personally witnessed numerous members of staff go over and above for customers with individual requirements or special needs, something which I don’t see in other coffee shops. I will not go anywhere else for my morning coffee, and would recommended Coffee #1 Portswood to everyone.

I have visited this branch everyday for a year now, the staff are unbelievably friendly and professional, the quality of the coffee is much better than any other local coffee place, and then to top of the quality with punctual and polite staff, it's the only place I want to buy my coffee. Would rate 10 stars if possible !

After frequenting here virtually everyday for the last 11 months I cannot see a reason to get coffee anywhere else, I have witnessed the staff here greet regulars by first name, have drinks started as they come in, go above and beyond for customers of all abilities. The coffee itself is always made with that little extra love even when busy. Even during these uncertain times they still go out of their way to make the experience a pleasurable. Sara and Liam work tirelessly to provide the service we deserve and as a local business worker that service and coffee is the perfect kick start to my day. So why would you go anywhere else? Simply answered you wouldn't .

There is currently no legal requirement to wear face masks in cafes in the UK. In Coffee No. 1 today, as expected, customers were not wearing any, while sitting at tables. I went up to the counter to order coffee. There was a glass screen between the cashier and the customer. And the cashier was wearing a face mask too. Do you have a face mask, I was asked. No, I replied. Then you can’t order coffee, I was told. I walked out, flabbergasted. To be clear: I could take off the requested face mask once I had ordered the coffee; and the cashier was already doubly protected from any of my errant sputum. And we are decidedly in the basal stage of the epidemic in the UK. And the coffee shop across the road, Muse, has neither masked staff, nor screens; nor does it rudely treat customers like bioweapons, requiring no less than three layers of protection to even order a coffee. I must have spend hundreds of pounds in Coffee No. 1 over many months or years. I was a loyal customer. But I will never go back to that branch, or any other.

I really appreciated the staff at this coffee place today. We ordered coffee latte with oat milk. Mine was rather strong for me but the staff were quick to add more milk and fix it for me with a smile. The chocolate crunch was extremely moorish too.

I came in for a coffee while waiting for my granddaughter. There are too many options I only wanted a plain coffee with milk I ended up with some fancy coffee that I left in favour for a glass of water as it was very bitter. Next time I will go to sainsbury's

I asked for a short black with the guest espresso which is not a difficult order to understand, especially for an establishment posing as a coffee house. After settling for an americano, the lady on the till proceeded to make a sarcastic comment to the barista. The coffee I did receive was over extracted, considering the FB80 and mythos grinders there shouldn’t be any excuse. Poor service, poor product.

There are several of these fantastic coffee shops, Portswood, So'ton high st, Eastleigh, Fareham, Gosport. All produce a great cup of coffee, just ask for 1 shot if its too strong.

Whenever I am in Portswood I always meet friends there. It's always very relaxing, and I love the decor.Staff are great, and when I'd made an error when ordering my items, the Manager fixed it within moments. Very happy indeed!Always happy to return here!

Visited in thursday was given a real bad soya iced latte and frappe cake was stale staff were unable to do whipped cream for the frappe asked for a large iced latte got given a regular coffee was burnt and was not impressed definitely will not return

Had a coffee in Coffee 1, amazed that a couple were allowed to bring their pet dogs in to the heart of the cafe. Really, pets in a food establishment?On exiting the cafe, yet another person with two pet dogs came and seated himself in middle of the cafe. I am not anti pets but it was a pleasant day, why not sit outside or close to the entry, away from the majority of other guests.Will not be using Coffee #1 Portswood again, hygiene standards do not appear to be a high priority.

My husband and I visit this coffee shop most Saturdays and recently we have enjoyed the good weather and sat outside which is lovely though even inside you can enjoy the ambiance of both the outdoor and indoor as they have huge bi fold windows so the shop is very light and airy.There is a real feel of originality and provenance about this brand, decor and furniture is rustic and worn but in a pleasant way. The food looks home made and fresh with plenty of choice.The shop is often very busy and you may at times struggle to find a free table ( and if you do you may have to clear it yourself) other than that the service and staff are delightful. I was even given a sample of peppermint tea by Conrad after I explained I was having difficulty finding a decent loose leaf one.Overall I would highly recommend this shop and the brand and if they can sort out the optimum staffing levels to suit busy periods and/or introduce a table clearing system ( I am more than happy to self clear if there is somewhere to deposit my tray as I leave) I would happily award 5 stars.

Great place to meet people although be prepared to queue for a longish time to get served. It can get busy (and you have to clear your own table - they just need somewhere for people to dump trays) esp during uni term. But I like it when windows open, seats outside and very good atmosphere. Coffee, drinks, nibbles good too

Every morning on the way to work I have in my extra hot latte but only one of their customer service her name is Maria she is one of the best always very happy very welcome as you make one of my best mate thank you very much and recommended her to everyone!!!

Whilst r eryone may not like the style of decor at this chain I find it pleasant enough. Barista was friendly but the coffee was not to my taste. The food though is a little pricey. £3.25 for a slice of cake, that probably doesn’t even cost 50p, is an all too common feature of such places. I accept premises have overheads and wages to pay but they all seem intent on robbing the customer.

This coffee shop offers a good variety of hot and cold drinks, their shakes are an interesting mix of flavours and their coffees taste really good without any bitterness. The cakes are yummy too.

Lovely creamy and hot latte with good coffee strength. Shame it's not the size of the Costa equivalent. Popular place seems to get mixed reviews here. I didn't eat.

We like C#1 in general but in taking uni child No.2 out for lunch it was not to usual standard. Service pretty slow and apathetic, soup lukewarm with a piece of uninteresting bread and rock hard butter. Add in a lumpy turmeric latte to boot!! Possibly a one off but not an experience I'd want to repeat. The food offer in Portswood is varied and competitive. C'mon guys ... get a grip please.

My partner and myself visited Coffee 1 for the first time and although a little crowded, we found some very comfortable chairs. The place was full of people who seemed to have finished their coffee and were on laptops and phones. Service was a little slow and when my partner ordered a filter coffee she noticed that it would be the last in the jug and pointed out that it might not be too good. They assured her it would be fine. She also ordered a hot chocolate for me. Unfortunately the coffee tasted a little stewed and the hot chocolate was more like a luke warm chocolate. Such a shame that it spoiled a nice atmosphere.

The coffee is great, the cakes etc. great, the lunchy things great. The ambiance is great but don't go if you're in a hurry cos the service is slow, and the tables not cleared enough.

Ambitious coffee shop with wide range of coffee based drink varieties and some tea. Iced frappe is very good and good value at 2 for 1. Flat white is tasty but varies in composition from one barista to another.

Wide selection of coffee, loose leaf tea and freshly made juices and smoothies. Nice ciabattas and salad bar options, plenty of veggie choices, but can run out quite early on.

I am a big fan of the Coffee 1 chain and whenever I find one I am in. However, what a sad place this is. I have tried several times here. The toilets have been either closed or in disgusting condition.

Coffee#1 is a nice coffee shop with good coffee and snacks. It's popular and often busy. This wouldn't be a problem with most coffee shops, but for some reason Coffee#1 can't seem to plan for this or organise well enough to handle busy periods - they are often under-staffed with a slow-moving queue.

We visited Coffee No 1 today and will definitely be returning. Great choice of drinks and very comfortable seating. Lovely coffee and I enjoyed a turmeric latte. Good atmosphere and the staff were friendly and helpful too.

What I've noticed with this establishment is the lack of a standard regarding the coffee. The service is great, food is worth its money and the atmosphere is nice, but something needs to be doe with the coffee.

Came here with a friend. Nice relaxed atmosphere and good to watch the world go by sat by the window. Nice range of drinks and good service.

I was recommended here again recently after having been there a long time ago and had a bad experience. I was told it had changed. Well it hasn't.

Asked for Turkey flatbread when it arrived it was deffo minus the turkey!! Coffee ok though and staff pleasant

First time visitor, popped in for a quick coffee and sandwich at lunchtime. Service was great, very friendly and quick. Coffee was delicious, food was great too and very good value. Lovely decor and plenty of seats. Toilets spotlessly clean. Will definitely come here again.

Regular customer to this coffee number one. Excellent coffee. I've previously complained to staff about cleanliness in the shop and this is probably down to the same issue - often they are on one member of staff a day. That isn't they're fault, they're usually working as fast as they can, but it leads to an extremely poor customer experience.

Coffee is great and the staff is very considerate. The place is nice and comfortable. Nice in sunny days when they put tables outside.

Coffee#1 is quite a large coffee shop in Portswood with a cosy feel about it.

Whenever I fancy a nice cup of coffee or a smoothie, I always go to Coffee#1.

I've always liked Coffee #1 and not disappointed on this visit. Young lady behind the till was friendly and knowledgeable and despite our extended indecisiveness was extremely polite. Coffee good as expected along with the lovely cakes. All in all a very pleasant 45 mins.

Excellent cafe if you like being hassled by tramps on your way in, stared at by tramps while you're drinking your coffee and hassled by tramps on your way out. Also, there are tramps.

Been here a few times , never been overly excited or disappointed until today. The guy behind the till , with dreads , I've never seen a more professional approach to a customer in Southampton. That itself deserves a 5*. Good coffee , good food , reasonable price .

We were fan of coffee#1 especially on the Portswood branch until they have changed some staffs who always made the perfect cup of coffee. Today, I and my kids decided to spend our time at a beautiful decorated coffee shop, but we were very disappointed with the staffs and service today. They made our order like I beg them that I got a cold latte no foam (ordered a hot latte), a large iced macchiato which is an iced milk with coffee scent (they did it in a small cup and then I asked them because I ordered large size so they put it in the large glass and then just put more milk; they did it in front of me which I'm very dissatisfied). the last order is two devil chocolate for my kids which they did not clean blenders nicely so we got devil chocolate with fruits and coffee scents. Hope the owner or a manager should send them to attend a coffee training and service skills, and must separate three of them to work in different time.

Great staff, wonderful coffee and snacks and the best sunny spots for people watching. Can't fault this little gem.

I took my son to this restaurant today for a treat and ordered the pasta, potato and leaf salad for lunch. Regrettably the lunch was not a treat.

This is a hipster coffee shop where you can hide in a nook or daydream at the window for as long as you want, the staff do not rush you/clear away empty cups to infer time is up. So it's a relaxing space with lots of room and a reasonable choice of sandwiches & lots of cake options. Once you've chosen & paid for food, choose your seating area wisely ...it's so hipster most of the seats are fashionably wooden, there are a few settees/armchairs. It's clean and they are really helpful, there is an area with a large selection of children's toys if you can grab that area/or not if you want a quieter visit.

Staff are very friendly and helpful.

This is my go-to coffee shop in Southampton. A very welcome addition to Portswood. The staff are always friendly and chatty and their coffee is great. It's even got some of my pickier friends convinced.

Stopped for a brief coffee and break from shopping, consumed a medium latte and a flapjack, good service but it was very busy and dificult to get a table.

Popped in for a coffee and to do some revision with a friend. We queued for quite some time as there were only 2 members of staff present, it seemed understaffed. When we were finally served I asked what paninis they had, as the paninis on show had no labels and no allergy information. The member of staff serving me let out a loud sigh as if irritated by my request and went to find out.

Visited a couple of times on Sunday mornings just after opening. Quite a large coffee shop with a lovely relaxed atmosphere. Very popular even at that time on a Sunday. Friendly staff and a good cup of coffee. Would recommend.

This venue, where once I did my banking, has been turned into a great coffee stop. It's done out in the usual sort of Coffee No 1 style, which is comfy and informal and is a great place to stop off for a break when shopping locally.

Usual good service from coffee 1. Helpful & informative staff. Bosco cheesecake a little dry for my tastes.

this recently opened "coffee bar" is spacious and comfortable with nice natural finishes and comfortable chairs; for relaxing whilst reading the newspaper perhaps. Excellent coffee although far too many to choose from, which must add to the frequent queues and time to get served. This is a welcome and more 'upmarket' addition to the recent proliferation of cafes and bars, but surely they can organise a better and quicker method of service?!

Even the decaf coffee tasts good here - really, it's all delicious coffee... however, I had a pastel de nata and it was undercooked... very much disappoint!

Lovely big venue, with inside and outside spaces. Offers loads of choices, different coffee blends as well as cakes, sandwiches and lots of gluten free options. Sustainable and fair trade options, friendly staff and good value.

Over priced food for what it is sandwiches just under £5.00 but the staff are nice and Freindly excellent coffee great Atmosphere :)

My friends and I frequent this place several times a week, the place is a little slice of tranquility. The staff are fantastic, always chatty and good humoured, even when busy or towards the end of a long day. The drinks are great, as are the cakes. I will often go in to read and enjoy the atmosphere. The mismatched furniture adds to the appeal and the space is open and inviting. All in all, this is a great coffee spot, and well worth a visit.

Visited this establishment twice during a three day visit. Excellent coffee and a good selection of snacks in a contemporary, spacious and friendly environment.

Another great place for gathering a few friends, having a tasty coffee, served by really charming staff. There are some interesting eats too - a bit more unusual that the usual muffins, millionaires shortbread and the like (Welsh cakes are a nice touch). Nicely dark too so feels cosy, or perhaps a sunny window to watch the world go by. Acceptable volume and type of music for all.

This place is a welcome addition to Portswood - really nice selection of cakes and decent drinks. Good place to sit down and have a bit of a read. Family friendly.

it's so cozy and relaxing in there. Don't drink coffee so can't comment on that but will be definitely be brining my mom to try it out. Bring a laptop or book.

Since opening in Shirley thus chain has become a firm favourite. The atmosphere is pleasant and relaxed, a nice selection of cakes and sandwiches (including pastel de nata) and the coffee is very good.

I've heard great things about Coffee 1 and I'm glad to say I agree! It's a welcome change to the regular chain coffee shops, with a real comfortable, cozy atmosphere. The coffee itself is fantastic and service is quick. The food is great too, if a little overpriced (no more so than its competitors though, and you do get more for your money). The BBQ pulled pork panini is a favourite of mine. A great place for a slice of cake and a catch up with friends.

Comfortable surroundings with nice Sofas and chairs great coffee with a bonus card scheme .The cakes are fresh and appetizing and it seems to be the only place that sells Welsh cakes

This fairly recently opened branch of the British coffee shop chain in Portswood which is beautifully decorated in a bare-brick walled and comfy leather chair sort of style, produces top notch coffee and, most importantly, pastel-de-nata (Portuguese custard tarts) that taste exactly like the real thing. They reproduce the flaky pastry and wobbly egg custard perfectly so if you've ever had one in Portugal you won't have your memory of them besmirched at all. If you've never tried one it's worth visiting this place just for a custard tart, though you may as well have a coffee with it. A great addition to Portswood High Street and real competition to the Trago lounge and, thankfully, to all the American chains that pay b****** all tax on their enormous profits.
