Coast To Coast Fish and Chip Shop in Eden

Well, major disappointment. Had been for first time exactly a week ago and thought they were beautiful. Great batter, fresh fish etc. went tonight and yes it was at opening time but really wish had walked past. The fish was like rubber, tasted and looked old. The batter looked 3 days old and like it had been re fried a few times. The battered sausage hardly had any batter on. The one in warmer looked great but I was given a fresh cooked one but wasn't good. In there hard to work prices out also as various different prices. Last week we had said we would use it as our regular one, afraid tonight we have now said we will never go back to it

I have used this chip shop on a regular takeaway basis for over 3 years Everything is fried to order and is always fresh. Staff are friendly and efficient Based on my experience I would recommend this Chippy.

The chips were hot, delicious and full of flavour. Very good portion sizes for good price. Very polite staff service with a smile. Whenever I am next driving past I’ll be sure to make another visit. Don’t miss out on this chippy everyone.

What a cracker of a little fish and chip van. Situated by the parking on Newhaven's West Beach, this is well worth visiting. Fresh fish, caught locally and crisp chips severed in environmentally friendly cardboard boxes, are delicious! Take them away or be served on their picnic benches.

Very disappointing! The fish in batter was well below par, the chips were ok. Was hoping to eat in but the dining room is out of use. Seen better days I would have thought.

Got a takeaway whilst staying in the area, big mistake. It is obvious the food is all cooked from frozen, my partner said the fish was definitely not fresh. To be honest it looked like one if the battered fillets you get from the supermarket. No vegan options which is fine so just had chips and mushy peas however even these were terrible, no taste whatsoever. The one star is for the friendly staff

Not sure if I was lucky reading the other reviews, but I found it very good and I'm fussy Yorkshire person, premises and staff very clean, friendly, chips just right not toi fat and undercooked, obviously fresh potatoes not frozen, fish was beautiful batter was not too thick, fish very tasty, really enjoyed them

Called in at about 5.30 after a long drive from Peterborough. Chose this purely on reviews telling me that this was the best chip shop in Kirkby Stephen……poor them ! When we entered the shop there was that awful smell of grease but I thought smells can be deceiving, how wrong I was. Waited 10 minutes for fish which again I don’t mind if it’s worth it, but it certainly was not. We ordered gravy which when spooned into the container had more lumps than liquid. The fish had horrible thick batter which was soggy and when the fish batter was broken there was water inside which I guess suggests the fish was frozen. The chips were edible but how bad can a fried potato be ? It’s 8 o’clock and it’s still repeating on me…awful !

Only fish & chip shop open in the town on a Thursday evening. Arrived about 7pm, and had about a ten minute wait before our order for two portions of fish & chips was taken. Staff very friendly, and soon walking back to our rental cottage in town. Opened the bag to be confronted with two pieces of fish that had been taken out of the warming area, and quite honestly must have been there since the shop opened, possibly reheated from the day before. The batter was a dark brown colour and almost solid, and the fish inside inedible. If it hadn’t started to pour with rain, we’d have taken it back, but just consigned the lot to the kitchen bin! Having read other reviews, maybe we were unlucky, but as we are leaving the town early in the morning, we’ll never know.

Way too much cheese on pizza and not much crust and barley any pizza sauce on it could have been better

Our first visit to Kirkby Stephen and our friends recommend we try the fish and chips from here. We certainly weren't disappointed. Fish cooked fresh to order and the chips were really nice too. Plenty of salt and vinegar as well, certainly no scrimping here. Large portion sizes as well, although we munched through them very happily.

As a West Yorkshire lad I'm fussy about fish and chips. Personally I think the batter was a little thick but the chips were great. My wife loved hers and our dog enjoyed her sausage. Biggest gripe was that although I asked for plenty of salt and vinegar I got none at all. They must have forgotten. The staff were great though - this would be a three if not for their friendly nature.

Cooked as you ordered ! The fish was large and the chips were crisp recommend. Staff were very pleasant - no complaints.

My only gripe with this place is the lack of queuing space! The service is good, the food is great, good portions, the prices are good and there are a few tables in the back if you want to eat in, but I think its first come, first served so best check before you order.

Called for two takeaway fish and chips, I requested one with no batter and the other with. The owner suggested steamed fish and one normal, my wife said her steamed fish was the best she had tasted. I have to say the portions were large and cooked fresh to order, I could not have asked for anything more. Keep up the cook work and I will definitely be back again

We stopped here lunchtime on Saturday 5 Jan on our way to Manchester, as it had glowing reviews. The shop was very busy so we had to wait which wasn't a problem, but when we opened them we were so disappointed. The shop is lovely and clean, the staff/owners extremely friendly, but we were disappointed at the small portion of fish, it was definitely the smallest fish we've ever had. So although they tasted nice we wouldn't go back, sorry.

I know my fish and chips and these were without doubt the best ones in quite a while if not the best ever. They were red hot, the chips were crispy right to the last one and the fish was really fresh. Absolutely delicious and excellent service in the cafe. I can't recommend them highly enough. Arrived in Kirkby Stephen parking my car in a caravan park with the intention of starting the coast to coast walk the following day. After checking in to my accommodation I took a walk and found this little fish and chip outlet one of several in the small town.

Passing through on way back from the Great North Run . Ate in . Good fish and chips and even better ( homemade ) steak pie . Hot chocolate very nice and enormous . All very reasonably priced . Will stop again .

En el lado positivo no había cola y la salsa curry era agradable pero escasa. £2. 60 bastante barato, pero era media salchicha.

we stopped at kirby stevens on our way home after easter and came across this chippie,they have a small seated restaurent which our family of 7 all found excellent we all got something different and we all enjojed ,mushy peas best ive ever tasted,mince pie with chips n gravy spot on.real good portions and lets not forget the staff who were really friendlly.would i return ,yes without a doubt

We come to Kirkby Stephen to celebrate Easter and its local events held hereSo much to see and do and eat, we always pass this chippy on the buses and say we must try this and never do favoring a local town centre rival whom couldnt be beaten for taste till he retired a few years ago and that chippy has not been the best since, we where eating fish and chips four days in a row thats how good they where.Anyway, town centre chippys where busy to be honest looking at the pieces people where eating the chips looked really rushed and pasty but the fish looked over cooked even so we now just eat this treat on a Sunday due to previous years of poor hit and miss lots, so this year we as a family where going to give it a miss, till we walked further down the town and saw this chippy was open the chips looked fab and a few people munching looked really happy too.For many years we have read the reviews on here, and maybe that was a reason to stick to what you know ? , well I feel further educated to say our lots where FAB !Portion was small but very very tasty, the quality of the fish - chunky and a proper thin tasty batter and the chips where well cooked and brown excellent flavourService was friendly and quick, and have read before the owner is miserable, may he is, but maybe he is so transfixed on his craft of doing things right and concentrating on delivering quality rather than quantity, he did his thing and the girls took the order, everything swift and everything freshly cooked I can honestly say this is now the best chippy in the town, Good friendly service and good quality food at a really good price

Have passed this place many times and kept saying we'll call in as it's always busy. So we called in today and ate in the cafe. Service and staff friendly but the fish, chips and mushy peas were pretty awful. Chips dry and hard enough to be used as weapons, fish batter more like pudding wrapped round a rectangle of fish and peas that I can only assume were this week's batch. Surprising that so many locals seem to use it.

A group of us booked a table, turned up a bit late but were given a very warm welcome by the staff despite probably not deserving it! We had quite a varied order but everything was served as asked & was delicious! Will definitely be going back, great food, friendly & accommodating staff.

This fish and chip shop wants seriously checking by the council,it's disgusting,they should be shut down,that food is pre cooked and cooked again,in fact I'm going to report the place,it cost £30 and the dog looked at me and turned her nose up,the word shocking isn't exaggerated,please don't waste your money

Absolutely disgusting food. hard brown dry chips probably warmed up. We had a large order for takeaway and all portions were horrific, gave what was left (which was a lot ) to the dog, who as no surprise turned it's nose up at it. will never go again and would advise others not to bother.

We stopped off at the choppy to get some dinner, the food was delicious and cheaper than other places around the area.

Good portion sizes, 3 to choose from! Chips were really tasty with a fab deep golden colour and just the right amount of crispy bits. Clean premises and friendly staff. A few benches down the hill to sit and enjoy your take away and the rarest thing of all... a litter bin outside on the corner.

On our way back home from the lakes we stopped for tea at Kirkby Stephen. The coast to coast is somewhere I've suggested stopping many times but never actually have. I remember once seeing this chippy on a TV programme years ago where the presenter stopped there for fish and chips on his way on the coast to coast walk. We noticed they had a small seated area so decided to eat in. They had the usual menu that you would expect from a chippy and decided on the obvious choice of traditional fish and chips. They were a decent portion and certainly didn't disappoint. They were also very reasonably priced. We thoroughly enjoyed it and are sure to visit next time we're are passing through.

The owner was very helpful and cooperative. We asked was the vinegar they were using the same as the ones they sell in a bottle. They said no but he went and brought me out a small pot of their vinegar. The food was lovely. We had fish and chips, Kebab and sausage and chips.

after a walk around Kirby Stephen we called in just for a fish each the staff were friendly and our fish was cooked to order we found a seat and open our fish it was small and about 7 inches long I snapped the end off it was just batter when I got to the fish it was grey and slimy I do not even think it was cod I put mine in the bin my wife tried to eat hers but put hers in the bin as well she say it left a bad taste in her mouthwe will not be going back . andrew

My wife and I received a really warm welcome and the fish and chips were fantastic, what more can I say. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Kirkby Stephen. The building has a huge history and the fellwalking legend himself, Wainwright even dined here with Eric Robson in 1989.

We were met and served by friendly staff, the excellent food was promptly served and proved an excellent meal.

We recently moved into the area & as things not unpacked we decided to have lunch here. WRONG DECISION! Chips dark brown, like eating cardboard & ? reheated. Fish no taste whatsoever couldn't even tell you what fish it was apart from it not fresh & very overcooked. It seems that food has to be cooked until dark brown! Peas! How can anyone get mushy peas wrong? We will never ever go there again. Will go hungry first.!

I've passed this fish and chip shop many times and decided to stop for lunch. Knowing it's links to A.Wainwright and the Coast to Coast (of which I'm not really a fan) and Julia Bradbury off the telly (of whom I am ), I just had to try it out. I ordered fish chips and peas for myself and jumbo sausage and chips for my son. The food was excellent and we both really enjoyed our lunch. The staff were very pleasant and friendly and I'm definitely going to be visiting again.

We regularly use this chippy, can recommend the steak pie, it's delicious. Owner is a bit of a nut, been living in Cumbria for too long :D

Disgusting! Asked for a fresh fish and a fish cake putting in the fryer, as I saw the fish and the fish cake already in the range and they looked old and overcooked. My other half declined the the fish on this basis. I told the woman I had just ordered the fish and the fish cake, but was given the original out of the range, which I didn't know until I opened them. I was livid to say the least, my other half saying just eat it! The fish was overcooked in a thick greasy batter and I suspect left over from the day before, considering the man in front asked for two fish and was given them straight from the fryer and not put in the range to drain. The fish was tasteless and in fact I don't know what fish it was! The fish cake was an overcooked piece of tasteless slop! This too I suspect was reheated from the day before! I've never had fish and chips as bad as these ever. I was on my way back to complain only to find it was closed. Unfortunately not for good!

Food OK (although cod rather flavorless), enjoyed deep fried Mars bar and ice cream. Service below average - had to leave table to find waitress to place sweet order, having waited some 15 minutes after finishing main course. Not that busy (7.30pm).

We pass this chip shop on a regular basis and thought 'Friday lunchtime let us indulge'. Enough to say the chips were disgusting!! It was 1.30 pm or I would have thought they had been reheated from the night before, but now wonder how many times the had been heated. Dry and hard, we had about a third then found a litter bin to dispose of them. Call again definitely not!!

Drove through Kirkby Stephen this Friday afternoon, looking for a chip shop and fancying chips and mushy peas.The centre of town was busy with no parking spaces as I passed two busy and popular looking chip shops. Then as I was heading out of town I spotted the Coast to Coast chip shop and restaurant, empty with no customers despite a sign saying 20 seats available inside?That should have been my first clue.Thinking back, I never got to see the meal they prepared and placed in to a lidded Polystyrene box. I decided to drive further on for 5 mins before eating it.When I stopped and opened the box to see what my £1.80 investment had rewarded me, I was amazed.The chips, if that's what you could call them where disgusting. They were dried, wizened and brown in colour.I had a bite into one of them and it was like chewing cardboard.It was like they were yesterday's chips, left overnight, reheated and over cooked.The peas were not much better. How could anyone with an ounce of pride in what they do serve up such an appalling offering.The box complete with its disgusting contents were consigned to the nearest bin.Clearly, the standards of this establishment are nil and it should be avoided at all costs.It appears that's what the locals do?

When we arrived the takeaway was busy. We made our way behind the counter to enter the seated area. The facilities were clean and the staff attentive. The food was freshly prepared and was cooked in dripping which added to its flavour. Great fish and chips cooked the traditional way.

Called here on our way back from a day out with the grandchildren,wish we hadn't bothered!!! The fish was well & truly battered,batter was really hard & crispy,think it must have been left over from the lunch time session,as for the chips they were horrible,all dried up,seems to me they had been reheated.Will definitely not be calling there again.

If I'm travelling back from the Lake District and I want an evening meal, I often divert to this place. If we just want to have a day out in Kirkby Sephen then we often finish it here. The quality of the fish and chips, along with anything else, is excellent, the service is excellent and the price is just where it is right to be. I would thoroughly recommend a visit and will return at some time myself.

We (me and my wife) had a sit down meal here just before christmas when passing through from visiting friends in the north east. I had fish, chips and curry sauce. The fish was crisp and unsatisfactory, the chips were borderline raw (although my wife says she likes them like this) - they were sometimes slightly crunchy, and lacked flavour. The curry sauce was jellyfied, and was obviously a ready mix. The only saving grace was the delicious (but overpriced) ice cream - which are bought in!I won't be back.

Did the coast to coast walk a couple of years ago and missed the opportunity to have fish and chips in the famous chippy. We are back touring the places we visited and decided to have a sit down fish and chips where the great AW chose to eat.The fish looked like a huge fish finger and the batter was burnt. Mushy peas were bland to say the least, tomato sauce was cheap and nasty. The chips were.....well, chips.I am guessing that from the queues in the other chippies in the town we picked the wrong one.Go for nostalgia but not for the fish and chips.Sorry to burst any coast to coasters bubble. It's not open very often either.Andy.

Non-stop consistency from the best chippy in most of the north. Certainly as good as anywhere you will find anywhere else.

Went to this chippy as we were turned away from the one next to out hotel as we were dining at about 19:50We arrived at 19:59 and looked at the closed sign, but the owner was still behind the counter.We asked if he was still open - "yes" - could we sit down to eat - "of course" he said.That's the difference between talking to the owner and just the staff in the other chippy.Food was promptly served, was piping hot, very tasty and filled the spot just right.Price was fine for sit in fish and chips.Well done for going the extra mile - very much appreciated.

Out of the 3 fish and chip shop's in Kirkby Stephen, we had to choose this one !Whilst the chips were not actually too bad the fish was revolting.It looked like it had been cooked and stood for about 3 hours.The batter was so hard I literally had to saw through it - not like fish batter should be at all.I don't know what the other fish shop's are like but they have to be better than this place.

6th of may bank holiday tried this chip shop and was very dissatisfied with what was served the batter was brown not golden under the brown shell the batter was raw and soggy The fish for what there was of it was just cooked the chips the dog would not eat them very poor i will never go in again

Have a sit down meal here. Enjoy the great fish and chips. If you are not absolutely stuffed to the gills, live wildly and try the deep fryed creme egg. Much nicer than it sounds!

Paul and his staff are ACE. The fish is always fresh and the chips just right. They also offer a sit down cafe which we have used once. We will not go anywhere else for fish and chips in Kirkby Stephen and they do a great pizza
