Fabulous Sunday lunch for a family special ocasion. beautiful food, so well looked after by the manager Abdul who couldn't do enough for us even though they had a huge private event going on. Stunning views, incredible service from all waiting staff who looked after my 11 year old son and pampered him. Highly recommend.

There is an option to add a set meal add-on when you book a room. This is expensive, and the website implies it is the same as the premium set menu. In fact, it's not - and its almost embarrassing how poor what you get is. As you've already handed over your money, perhaps as an attempt to maximise profit margins. I was quite sheepish having such an entirely different and worse meal compared to all the other people in the restaurant. One simple resolution would be to publish this menu with all the others on the website, so at least its transparent. I suppose, though, this would rather defeat the point: no-one would book it. Beyond this, wine wasn't great and was expensive.

Exceptional food, we chose the Taster menu with wine pairing. The only criticism I have is that the dishes were not explained to us, I had to get the menu to remind us what we were eating, as too with the wine pairing, it would of been nice to know why it was chosen etc. The restaurant was very quite so lacked atmosphere. Hopefully this review will help with educating the staff and encourage people to go to add to the atmosphere, would definitely go again just for the food.

We stayed in the hotel and had our dinner in the restaurant. We both ordered a French inspired 5 course tasting menu. This came accompanied by excellent French wine for each course. Fabulous choice. There was a fresh baked bread and fresh butter with sundried tomatoes. This was followed by onion cream soup, duck liver pate, beautiful beef steak, sorbet and tart tatin. All very tasty and beautifully presented. Staff were polie and efficient. The only thing this restaurant lacks is atmosphere. It felt dead, like sitting in a dark cold corridor on a cold winter evening, had this been summer I am sure a beautiful view across the South Downs could be admired but not at 7/8pm in January.

The Cloisters is the main restaurant inside the gothic style Nutfield Priory Hotel. The location is fabulous and we enjoyed pre-dinner drinks on the terrace overlooking the Surrey countryside. Once inside we took the 5 course tasting menu. Generally the dishes were good, nicely presented with interesting combinations of ingredients, such as salmon ballotine with air dried cherry tomatoes. Fabulous. We also ate on another night and enjoyed the richly flavoured beef mosaic and the tomato carpaccio with butter bean caviar which was rich and imaginative. The overall experience is let down by the chaotic service. There is something wrong with the staff organisation, because despite lots of very friendly and helpful waiters dishes took ages to arrive, were incorrect or for other diners. Examples included a meat amuse bouche, despite us requesting a pescatarian meal, the waitress asking if we had enjoyed our starter, even though it had not been served, being given someone else's wine, then their main courses, and so on. I'm not sure if it was because of the service issues, but too many of the hot dishes were guily of being slightly dried out, which suggests they had spent too long on the pass.I think the staff are new, so hopefully once teething issues are resolved this will be a great place ot eat.

We booked here for our wedding anniversary and it far exceeded our expectations. From the moment we arrived the warm welcome and attention was 5 class. The drinks lounge was cosy and candlelit and we received lovely snacks to accompany our drinks. My cosmopolitan was the best! The restaurant itself is stunning. In daylight you have views out on to the Surrey Downs and in the evening it is candlelit and inviting. The service here is impressive with everyone playing their part in making your experience with them one to remember. The food was superb. The thrice cooked chips are worth a mention on their own. My husband is a passionate carnivore whilst I am vegetarian. The choice was extensive and we were delighted with the dishes we chose. I had one of the best mains that I ever ever had. It’s so nice to be offered something different to pasta! I can not recommend this place enough and am so looking forward to a return visit. We loved it here and had a truly great evening that we will remember forever. Thank you to everyone at Cloisters for making our ‘date’ so very special. Long may you continue at doing what you do best.

My wife and I dined at this restaurant, during our recent break in this area. The presentation of food was high, and while the choice was a little limited the dishes tried (starter and main) were tasty and of a good standard, with a British produce focus.

We love the Nutfield and It’s our go to place if we want to feel special but something has gone horribly wrong and although the prices have stayed the same, the service was terrible. Our pre dinner drinks came without any snacks etc and dinner menus were requested but didn’t arrive until our glasses were empty and we had to ask again and several times during dinner we had to ask for refills. Sadly we won’t be back.

Love the nutfield priory and got married there a few years ago, so decided to go with my wife for our anniversary. We have been to the cloisters quite a few times and always had a five star experience. This time I’m sorry to say has been a massive disappointment. The restaurant no longer feels special, the service I’ve experienced before made it feel special, even if it was the fixed price 4 course menu. This last visit wasn’t great. Not sure if it was a bad night or if the manager wasn’t there, but not far off a chain restaurant service. No fixed price menus with coffee to finish is a big loss, as although not cheap, was good value. Food wasn’t that special this time either. Unfortunate won’t be rushing back

A number of previous reviews have stated how poor the afternoon tea was, most with responses from the establishment stating how sorry they are, and that they will pass on the comments to the relevant departments! This is obviously not being done. The afternoon tea is a disgrace. Freezing cold, obviously made in the morning, or even the day before!?.You get better sandwich’s from the Co-op!Then they have the absolute nerve to charge a fortune for it! Nearly £70 for 2!The place is obviously making an absolute killing! As they don’t need to concern themselves with the food, as the weddings here cover all their overheads!!?It’s a shame as the property has a lot of character. But if your looking for good food or a place to have a spa day, go elsewhere. The spa needs much improvement. Jacuzzi not working (not to mention loose, rusty hand rails), along with substantial tiles missing in the steam room, and a pool area requiring maintenance, along with a good clean! It’s not a difficult job. It’s sandwich’s and cakes at the end of the day. Which for the price you pay should be fresh, substantial (not just 1 bit of ham, and 2 slices of cucumber), and home made. Will not be returning.

This was a return visit so we knew what to expect. The food was excellent as on our first visit, especially the Chateaubriand which was cooked perfectly as were the accompaniments. But we were disappointed by the service throughout the evening. The staff themselves were polite, friendly and helpful. But it was lacking the polish that we'd expect in a restaurant of this standard (and bearing in mind the prices being charged).Examples as follows. On arrival (we weren't hotel guests), nobody offerred to take our coats, so they ended up being on the back of our chairs all evening. Told about one starter not being available but had already had the menu for 5 minutes and had picked this as our favourite, so ended up slightly disappointed. The menu itself was falling apart (pages had come loose).During the meal, our mains arrived while bread was still in the middle of the table. The server had to move everything around whilst holding large plates of food - we helped of course but it was very awkward. Just needed someone to move/remove the bread before the main was ready to be served. And lastly, nobody came to top up our water or to ask if we wanted more drinks. I ordered a medium glass of wine at the start of the meal, intending to have another. My glass was empty just as the main course arrived, but no attempt to offer me anything else. All this was particularly disappointing as the restaurant was far from busy, so no excuse that the staff were run off their feet.We will return, but hope that the service will improve. If not, I'd seriously consider requesting that the automatic service charge is removed.

We always enjoy dinner at Cloisters and were seated in one of the coupes tables overlooking (even though it was dark) the views down the valley, which means one does not feel overlooked, nor can one look at, other tables.Scallops to start were superb, my fish was tasty and my husband's steak quite sumptuous, just the fine-dining side of gastro presentation. To finish I enjoyed a relatively light but well presented ice cream / tuile / compote dessertWines are expensive, in fact we chose by the glass as we could not agree on a bottle to share, the BTG choice is good

The restaurant itself is beaitiful and has wonderful views; the rest was average. We ate at the hotel as part of a package with the room and breakfast. We were quickly seen to our seats and given no more than about 5 minutes to look at the menu before the waitress came to take our order. I had the lemon sole and my husband the chateaubriand for 1. We both ordered the soup to start. The chateaubriand was decent (although we had to ask for a steak knife) but the lemon sole was a very skimpy portion...I ordered a side but it never arrived. We had been served the entire meal with 45 minutes... really rushed and while my husband was still enjoying his wine we were asked if we wanted the bill so we could go to the bar or back to our room. We were a little surprised given we hadn't even been there an hour. A lot of attention is needed on the service side and a review of their dishes if they want to be the restaurant they claim to be. I wouldn't go back again but instead eat at a local restaurant nearby. A very average meal that was not reflective of the food or service.

A long time friend and I decided to have a "posh lunch" rather than visit a local pub. There is extensive building work going on, but it didn't affect the Cloisters Restaurant and bar area. Service was very friendly and efficient as you would expect. We both ordered delicious monkfish and thoroughly enjoyed it. This was washed down with a lovely glass of sauvignon blanc which we didn't think overpriced. But the lunch was made just a little bit special because of the views on a beautiful, sunny, early Spring day. Yes, it did cost us a little more than a pub lunch would have. But it was so nice to treat ourselves.

We ate in Cloisters as we were staying over at the Nutfield. It is a lovely setting in an historic building. We were served by Peter who is an absolute gent - very knowledgeable about the building, wine and probably anything else you'd care to engage him on :-) The food was ok - it had the potential to be really good but just didn't quite hit the mark. That said, some of the individual elements of the meals were brilliant. Try the deconstructed trifle. As a note, we were the only people in the restaurant that night as there was a large convention in the main hotel - I suspect it may have had something to do with the experience. Would recommend and would go back.

The scallops were sensations and the Surrey beef fillet was cooked to perfection. Our red wine, - Catena – was wonderful (odd that it wasn’t actually on the wine list but I saw it behind the bar) and the service was perfectly times. We went to Cloisters for my birthday and were very disappointed. I suspected the portions might be small. Even the Head Waiter suggested we order sides as the meals don't come with anything other than what is stated! ( things like foam and other fancy non filling garnishes). The only potato sides were CHIPS? For what is supposed to be fine dining, they serve chips as the only potato side. (They did do us a portion of new potatoes when we asked however. ). The starters arrived and were miniscule. Had we ordered the 10 course tasting menu by mistake? No. The portions are simply tiny. Mains arrived. My wife's John Dory fillet was full of bones, small and overcooked. She didn't eat it and was offered something else. She declined. I had my meal ( lamb) which ok but nothing to get that excited about and neither of us wanted to hang about for another meal to be cooked. We skipped dessert although ordered an espresso each. They arrived with an odd mix of incredibly sweet things ( petit fours apparently). We asked for the bill and they bought a plate with more petit fours (more of the dreadful sweet things) with a happy birthday message and a candle. A nice gesture but all a bit lame and late. They'd have redeemed themselves a bit by doing the espressos on the house ( with the birthday message plate perhaps). Instead they told us we hadn't charged us for the fish meal!

I had the £40 set menu. The bread was indigestible and accompanied by two silly and inadequate rounds of flavoured butter. My starter was billed as ham egg and chips which was quite amusing. Shredded fried potato, a quails egg and a small chunk of chopped gammon. OK but nothing special. I had lamb for the main meal which again was tasty although we were given no choice as to whether I wanted rare, medium etc. I finished with a very nice cheesecake. However, my husband chose the a la carte, beginning with scallops (ubiquitous I know but he likes them) which he said were OK nothing special (which for the price they should have been). He ordered for his main course, lamb cutlets. When it arrived it was one tiny lamb chop, so the poor lamb sacrificed for this must have been minutes old, barely a mouthful. Accompanied by shredded lamb in a pastry case. We had a pot of very nice sugar snap peas, peas and small white onions between us. He was so disappointed in the lamb he later checked the price and was shocked to see it was £31.00. Come on! That really is a shocking price and only worthy of Le Manoir or the Fat Duck, not an over-rated hotel in Surrey. Being seated in the cloisters for dinner made it seem we were sitting in a narrow corridor, slightly claustrophobic and tables very close together. This hotel is trying to be all things and needs to get back to basics and, most of all, look again at the prices it charges for fairly mediocre offerings. We won't be back.

We ate at the Cloisters restaurant using the £31 per head sunday lunch offer. The hotel is lovely if you like victorian gothic style architecture and is situated in wonderful countryside with exceptional views.Inside the very high ceilings and gothic style aren't what I would call cosy but there is a quite distinct upmarket ambience about the place. We took a drink at the bar before lunch and service was very good. The wine list was a little expensive - £39 for an average bottle of Prosecco was over the top - but we chose a perfectly acceptable Gavi for less than that.We were attended by a very affable Swiss maitre d' who was charming and attentive. The menu was pretty standard fare for Sunday lunch but who wants to go 'off piste' on Sunday lunchtime? Starters of salmon and ham hock were fine but not outstanding and the beef to follow was perfectly acceptable. Desserts were apparently underwhelming but I had a large plate of cheese that was enough to be shared around. All in all a nice atmosphere in the restaurant but perhaps the prices of the set lunch and wines are restricting demand for places at Cloisters - the restaurant was only a third full at best.

We had a hotel dinner deal here which included three courses and coffee. The starters were fine but the main course was very strange. Two lamb croquettes with different purees and two mini asparagus spears. You had to order potatoes and vegetables separate which made the meal £10 more expensive for each portion. The dessert was also tiny. Three cubes of rhubarb and small dots for 'custard' and some other blobs for jelly. As for the petite fours, I would just leave them on the plate, they looked bad, tasted worse. All in all I would say that the food here is a bit confused, not worth the money or time and maybe the chef should go back to basic. The service was very good though.

This review is for the St George's Day Wine Pairing Taster Menu which was superb. we enjoyed English sparkling win with yummy canapes in the reception hall & were then taken to the private dining room, set out for the 8 couples booked. Each table was personally decorated & the many staff were charming & attentive. An expert from Bibendum described each wine as it was served & elaborated on why she had chosen it to accompany the particular courses. Pleasingly several were English wines, just a shame not all were because there are so many local English vineyards, we did feel that the wine choices could have been more adventurous, The pea & ham soup (course 1) was so creamy & the 3rd course, sea bass, incredible, as was the fillet in course four. I wasn't that impressed with the accompanying beef shin. Course 5 was a cheese souffle slightly unexpected but very tasty. The dessert course was a bit disappointing, some nice elements in the citrus celebration but the focus tart had a too-solid pastry bottom. The dessert wine was stunning. Staff did top up our water glasses when asked but, given the quantities of alcohol on offer, more water would have been welcome. All in all a wonderful evening, very special

When we arrive there was no one on reception so we went straight to the bar, where we waited for someone to acknowledge us which was quite some time! We ordered champagne cocktails and ordered our meal and were then taken through for the Amuse Bouche of a ham hock terrine which looked like it had been on the plate uncovered for quite sometime as it looked dry and tasted like a bad luncheon meat, not what I would call "mouth amuser"! Then we ordered a bottle of Laurent Perrier it took at least 15 minutes as they had to go to the cellar so it was also not the right temperature which is not good at over £65 per bottle. When the starters were brought to are table the waiter squashed an ant right in front of me and then chased another one around the table and did they same to that, not a great start to the meal! Starter of Marinated celeriac, whipped goats curd, courgette caviar balsamic emulsion, was bitter and not nice, Ballontine of smoked chicken, ginger puree, toasted sourdough bread was ok, but was not very pretty on the plate! Main course Pan fried rosemary scented ribeye steak, roasted heritage carrots, carrot puree balsamic shallots, triple cooked chips looked dreadful as it had been cut up and positioned around the plate as if it was a fine dining dish which it wasn't and not great tasting either! Dessert was the only saving grace for one of us but the other dessert was awful. Deconstructed Rhubarb & Custard was nice and Chocolate Terrine with Blood Orange Sorbet & White Fudge was dreadful the terrine was far to dense almost chewy just unpleasant! We then had coffees which we were served with the same white chocolate fudge and nougat which is not a treat when it was already on your dessert! For the total price of nearly £180 I could have gone to a Michelin star restaurant and had a meal worthy of this price! Toilet were so outdated and poor toiletries which looked old and filled up and not very special looking, what I found my shocking was the hand sanitizer which looked like the cleaner had left it by mistake, a hideous cheap container which I even took to reception and said I think the cleaner has left this behind and she said no it should be there! You are not a 4* hotel far from it and it is a real shame that places like South lodge in Horsham with the restaurant The Pass which is worth ever penny could teach you how fine dining should be in a country hotel! Finally point we ordered a taxi and no one even told us it had arrive and the taxi man said he had come into reception to announce his arrive! All in all a total waste of money and we will not return!

The service is wonderful. There are three menus; meat, vegetarian and the taster. Lots to choose from and if you can't find anything ask to see the bar menu or ask chef to cook something. Chef made me pasta, awesome, followed by ice cream. The pistachio wad 9.5/10 the vanilla 9/10.Will eat there again next week.

The tasting menu has something for very one and while most of us elected got the steak which was soooo tender, others went with the superb Pork Belly or Grey Turbot. A few more vegetables wouldn't have gone amiss but overall, the food and the service was excellent.

Idyllic setting. There is no doubt, the place is beautiful. Aim for a table by the window for spectacular views across Surrey/Sussex.We met family last night and had a very pleasant evening. The staff were excellent. They were attentive but not intrusive, and made us all feel very relaxed. We all chose from the £39.50 set menu with potatoes and side dishes being an extra £5.50 per dish. Starters were really good but I felt the choice for mains was somewhat limited - pork belly, grey mullet, risotto, or pan fried rib eye. . One member of the group chose the risotto, which could have been better presented. My personal criticism was that my food was cold. If I had not been a guest of the party, I would definitely have made comment to the waiter, and probably sent it back.Overall the meal was ok with some lovely flavours, but for a fine dining experience I think I expected more. Maybe I have been watching too much master chef?!!

This is the second year in a row we have chosen the Tasting Menu at Cloisters & it was an improvement, the quality was equally good but the portions were much more manageable. We decide not to buy the wine flight as were not inspired by the WF choices & actually preferred to elect our own favourites from the By The Glass wine menu. This worked well. The menu stated with canapes & a glass of bubbly, most welcome. Unusually, the final course was a cheese one, with sweet bread / cracker & jam/chutney which was really lovely. Recommended.

This was our second tasting dinner at Cloisters and so much better than the first. This time the portions were spot on, perfect to taste, sample and marvel, without completing filling you up. We were much more easily able to manage the six courses, all of which were wonderfully presented. The beef was about 6oz, absolutely the right amount for course four which meant we could enjoy the light dessert and excellent cheese. So the food now works really well but the accompanying wine flight isn’t quite there yet. It isn’t actually accompanying, since you only have wine for two courses – both small glasses (125 ml) and some port. At £30 a head, that’s pricey. We choose our own wine, by the glass for the courses, which worked out well. A little more attention here and it will be a real winning combination.

We went in may this year for dinner. Table was booked for 8pm and we were put in the alcove part so no nice view from the window for us . Was fully booked obviously :(Service was a bit slow that night . 15 mins to bring the menu and another 10 to return . Starter and main course were good from memory I had the fish which was nicely pan fried but small on size of course . Dessert was disappointing . They must have changed the dessert chef as the panna cotta had several complaints . It was terrible . More like cottage cheese . Opted for the icecream to keep it safe . Not sure would visit again . For price would expect better food and bigger portions !!

I wrote a particularly scathing report about this place 4 months ago, but my friend Martin Davey has been nagging me ever since, assuring me that it was a one-off, and begging me to try it again. He even offered to drive me there in his clapped-out old Audi if I agreed. Eventually, on a very raining June day with nothing else to do, I donned a disguise and booked a table in a false name. The result?Still rubbish. Still soulless. Staff still useless. Food still terrible. Decor still not been touched up since the monks themselves did the original botch job back in the 15th century, probably drunk. They were certainly no good at excluding draughts, but then again, neither are today's inept management team, who swan around as if they were running a michelin-starred Mayfair eaterie, when in fact they preside over the very worst dining experience in the whole of Surrey.Martin Davey - I will never listen to another word you say. I don't care if you had your wedding anniversary here, it is rubbish. God in heaven, I pray, PLEASE never curse me with having to go back here again.Amen.

I enjoyed afternoon tea at £27.50 per head this afternoon with family. The hotel has some lovey architecture and splendid views. The afternoon tea was a really good effort. Jam was a bit runny and portions a bit on the small side, but all very tasty. The thing that made this a really good effort was the staff. They were all polite and attentive without being intrusive. The loos were a bit shabby, and overall, the hotel gave the impression of being just a bit tired, but the staff were really very polite and friendly - you'll go a long way to find better. Our table was rght next to a radiator and we were all a bit chilly, but I think that's due to the age of the building and the fact that it was snowing this morning. You could do a lot worse. We had fun.

It was a real shame that the experience did not quite live up to the billing, we were so looking forward to our Wine Flight Six Course Gourmet dinner. Part of the deal was a glass of bubbly and canapes but it was only after sitting down and being brought our starter did we realise we hadn't had them, mentioned it, so the waiter (one of about six we saw that night) then brought them. Another course was brought out of order too. The food itself was beautifully presented and really tasty, some great flavour combinations. One quibble (apart from the slightly erratic (but apologetic and polite) service was that some courses were way too big, for example there were two puddings in the six courses, a deeply rich chocolate one, which was slightly smaller than a full portion, immediately followed by a large slice of equally delicious (and even richer) slice of treacle tart with clotted cream. Sadly neither of us could do it justice. We had breakfast the next morning (amazing we found room!) which was excellent, great food freshly cooked & charmingly served with super views in the early morning sun down towards a local airfield & the South Downs beyond. We'll be back, let's hope the little hiccups can be ironed out

A friend of mine whose judgement is now in serious doubt recommended this weird place to me, and it will take some time for me to forgive him. It is like a bad B&B dining room in Blackpool, except with worse staff. We came for dinner and soon realised that all the other diners were in their 20's and on a cheap 'spa getaway' weekend. Well they certainly got away. From any semblance of decent food or service. When I heard the girl on the next table ask for "another glass of tap water please" (presumably proper drinks don't come in your Daily Star getaway voucher) I knew it was time to leave. Didn't stay long enough to sample the shabby-looking food from the tired menu (which, by the way, bore ZERO resemblance to the very alluring one on their website), but we did eat some strange stale fishy 'appetisers' (pass me the sick bucket darling) and some ultra stale bread that tasted like it had been smuggled out of Ukraine some time in the early part of the Cold War. My wife's glass of prosecco was a luminous yellow and tasted like it had been freshly poured from a nuclear reactor at Hinckley Point, and my £15 glass of red wine was frothy and tasted like a lab experiment on a monkey's brain gone wrong. You have no idea how bad this place is - an absolute, unmitigated shambles. Actually, it was so bad, it was actually funny. My wife and I ran away and went to Bollywoods in Caterham for a curry instead. Seriously - it's so bad that it's actually almost good - worth a visit just to witness the absolute bottom of Surrey's restaurant barrel

Beautiful building 13th century with leaded windows. Inside a bit tired but still exceptional. However the food was disappointing it got worse after the first course. The large tough pork chop supposed to be the presentation of suckling pig (more compared to a builders cafe lunch) The pan seared Turbot was absolutely cold with a watery tasteless consomme, lacking the crispy mussels. Fondant potatoes were a round shape but raw even after being changed twice. The organic cheesecake mousse ,seville orange granita etc was a pile of unrecognised ingredients ( a real Eton mess without the Eton) topped with hard pistachios and tiny brought in meringues. A total disappointment they should have brought in a professional chefs it was embarrassing for me and the institute

The restaurant is set amongst what was or might have been, the cloisters and works well with lovely overlooking views of the north Downs. The walls are impressively thick and the old fashioned radiators continue to ensure that no matter how cold outside, it is warm and cosy inside. This time we tried their tasting menu which was delicious but way too filling. The amuse bouche was super as was the quality of all the food. However, it wasn’t so much a tasting menu as a six course dinner – tasting menu’s should be just that, a taster, not a whole course. We also took the wine flight which was a little pricey given that everyone received a glass of champagne regardless of whether they took the wine option. Service was a little mixed because we had three people serving the table which resulted in our third course coming before our second and a small mix up on the wines. However, the team realised their error, apologised and made amends. I think its brave of restaurants to put on tasting menus, they are to be encouraged. A few little tweaks and this will be winning formula

The sun shone into the resturant , unfortunately the blind was broken and the glare was very uncomfortable . Service or lack of service was appalling . The tea arrived but no milk , by the time it arrived the tea was going cold. Scones were great but the cake selection was very soggy . We asked for more tea and after 20 min it still hadn't arrived. . Each time we had to go in search of staff .This was supposed to have been a special treat , but it was decidable underwhelming and disappointing waste of money

The surroundings are stunning, with the restaurant located in the cloisters of the former priory, complete with ornate stone arches and leaded windows, which offer beautiful views across The Weald to the South Downs. The tables are positioned so that diners can make the most of the views, although this works less well after dark. On arrival, although there was only one other couple in the restaurant, we were initially shown to the table right next to the other occupied one. I asked if we could sit a bit further away to have some privacy; the maitre d' did not object, but explained that they seat people in order of arrival (rather odd, given that most restaurants understand that diners don't want to be on top of each other and allocate tables accordingly). As a frequent sufferer of food envy, preferring others' menu choices over my own, I decided to follow my friend's choices. We started with the marinated salmon and avocado mousse. The salmon was lovely, thick cut slices, and a wonderful meaty texture, although I felt the avocado mousse wasn't a great accompaniment, as the rich creaminess detracted from the rich but fresh flavours of the salmon. Then the beef fillet was beautifully cooked, retaining a nice pinkness, and was accompanied by traditional mashed potatoes. I was excited at the prospect of dessert: a chocolate delice with caramelised banana and smoked white chocolate. The delice was delicious, and not too sweet, the sweetness being added by the caramelised banana (of which I would have liked more). The odd note on the plate was the smoked white chocolate, which tasted more of citrus than of smoke.Although the 3 course set meal for £38 sounded good value, the final bill was £131 for two, once the £9.95 supplement for the beef and a glass of champagne and a glass of merlot each had been taken into account. All in all, The Cloisters at Nutfield Priory is a good place for an everyday special occasion (if you know what I mean) such as a birthday, but not quite "really special occasion".

I arranged to take a friend here for afternoon tea, for her birthday, and what a beautiful building in a beautiful setting it is. That is just about where it ended though! Whilst they did have some nice fruit teas, they were sadly lacking in their selection of traditional teas (which is quite frankly what it's all about). When they brought the stand of sandwiches and cakes out, I was immediately dissapointed, even before tasting anything. There were no fancy cakes, or tarts, or eclairs, nothing that actually tempted me at all, just plain pieces of sponge. The very tiny finger sandwiches were all stale, the scones were nice, although had clearly been made using too much baking powder, as you immediately got that fuzzy feeling on the tongue.., but the top layer of so called cakes, were an embarrasement. (and I so wish I'd complained at the time). They had all either come out of the freezer, and were doughey, or had been left out overnight, and were shriveled around the edges.I am so embarrased for my friend, as it was supposed to be a treat for her, and I was just feeling too unwell to make a fuss. And to think I paid nearly £50 for that!!! I wish I'd read these reviews before.

We dined here last Sunday evening to celerate a birthday, and once again it did not disappoint. We ate from the set menu, selecting ten different dishes between the four of us, and each was first class. There was plenty of choice from this menu and at about £38 for three courses plus hors d'oeuvres we found it to be absolutely worth every penny. Presentation was excellent throughout, including a plate of gorgeous chocolates for a 'Happy Birthday'. Service was to its usual high standard - though we did miss Peter the Maitre d' and his infectious enthusiasm - and, whilst not every dish on every occasion has been raved about, this time we all left feeling as though we had experienced as good a meal as we could have hoped for. We would not hesitate to recommend it.

We could still hear the disco and on yhe windows the drunk bridesmaids and groomsmen. The food was alright but at £35-40 for a main course , £12.95 for starter and expensive wine, its wasn't worth the money. The worst bit was the waiter's lack of service and courtesy. Just awful! Worst experience I have had in a fine dining restaurant.

My friend and I visited for Afternoon Tea and we were very underwhelmed. The waiter whilst being knowledgeable about the tea (which there was a nice selection of) was very sweaty which was off putting especially when he brought out the Afternoon Tea, my friend said it actually put her off the top layer of cakes. The cakes weren't anything special and I feel like the whole Afternoon Tea was very average. I booked a massage and afternoon tea for my mums birthday today...the massage was rubbish my mum was very uncomfortable through out as the lady didnt recognise that my mum had to support her head on her arms as she gave my mum no spare towels for her head to be supported on...needless to say it wasn't at all relaxing, and obviously a neck, back and shoulder massage didnt include any shoulder work.Afterwards we went for the afternoon tea, we sat down and the waiter gave us our selection of teas...most were fruit tea which isnt exactly traditional, anywho we ordered the traditional english breakfast tea. My mum had to ask the waiter to change her cup as it was dirty, they must have picked it up and lightly wiped it then brought it back. The cup was still dirty so my mum had to ask them again to change it! Finally she got a clean cup. The sandwiches were obviously made yesterday and left over night in the fridge as all the bread was hard and stale like. The scones were nice and fresh. The cakes were truly awlful! One tasted like an oxo cube sponge and another tasted like it had gravy powder mixed in it! Never tasted cakes so vile! We had to ask a passing waiter for a napkin as they obviously didnt provide them when you sit down! I was also annoyed that they placed a couple with a small baby behind us, both me and my mum love children but wasn't exactly suitable placing them so near to us and other people. Ive been to many places for afternoon tea and this was definitely the worst, im just annoyed that I spent money on today for my mums birthday and our experience was a terrible one. We visited the Nutfield Priory restaurant for a special meal and we were not disappointed. The priory building is an impressive sight and it's situated in the most beautiful Surrey/Sussex countryside, which can be viewed from inside the restaurant and bar area. The views are stunning and really add to the whole experience, give me this over a London restaurant any day! From start to finish, all of the staff that we encountered were courteous and helpful. The lounge area is a wonderful quiet place to enjoy a drink before dinner, with comfortable chairs and an enormous fire place. The restaurant itself is set in the cloisters, hence it's name and we enjoyed a table by the window, overlooking the views. The menu was simple with only a few choices, but I quite like that and everything looked delicious, it was hard to choose! I can recommend the small sorbets between courses as not only do they refresh the mouth, they are also extremely yummy. The food was beautifully presented and very tasty. D-Day on 6th June is the wedding anniversary of my wife and I . 10 years ago on the 60th Anniversary of D-Day we had an excellent lunch at this restaurant which we had used many times in the past . With the upcoming of the 70th Anniversary of D Day we said lets take a chance and book there for lunch This we duly did earlier in the week and the booking clerk noted this was a special date being our wedding Anniversary. When we arrived at the Cloisters Restaurant there was simply nobody around to greet us . Finally the barman appeared and acknowledged we had a lunch booking. We opted to wait for our table before being escorted by a waitress who apologised for all the linen piled high on the tables we had to pass due she said having to clear up from a conference . When we were seated we noted there were only a handful of other diners in the restaurant This was hardly surprising when we saw the price of the 3 course lunch which carried a supplement of £9.25 for the only decent red meat main course, We carried on and were served with food which was of reasonable quality and nicely presented on the plate but with long delays for each course . On previous occasions many years ago we had remarked how nice it was to find silver plated cutlery at the table and the food to be served double plated with upper ones of quality bone china. This now is replaced by canteen style stainless steel cutlery and plain white plates. No doubt on now being part of a larger hotel Group something had to go. At the end of our meal when the sweet plates needed to be cleared we noted the guy who had served at our table had removed his jacket and was now to be seen in braces. . After he had performed this task my wife said all she could smell was cigarette smoke. He did not appear again All in all we were very disappointed. particularly as there were was no recognition of our special occasion. The food served was average but nor anything special and we could not but help overhearing the diners on the next table who had to send back to the kitchen their main course(with supplement) because the meat was not properly cooked. Hopefully these people may also write a review Only consolation was that when the bill came for payment we noted the charge was lower than the price on the menu. Someone must have got the message that whilst this may be a nice venue for Wedding Receptions and Business Conferences it falls well short of expectations for ordinary Diners at the prices quoted For D-Day+80 we will not be returning
