Such a beautiful setting and lovely helpful team. Had set menu for £45 per head incl canapés. Delicious food and generous portions. Found it great value and nice to be in calm and unusual surroundings instead of usual noisy restaurants. Highly recommended and will def return (should also say that chef can be flexible on menu if you want alternative suggestion and tho we didn’t need to deviate from planned offer it’s useful to know you can discuss this)

We had a lovely evening at one of the most beautiful settings on the north Norfolk coast. It was lovely to return to have an evening meal. Attention to detail and service from Donatis & his colleague was fantastic. We had to return one of the courses, but it was quickly resolved. We had the most fantastic sunset to the finish the evening. Thank you and please please continue serving evening meals.

We stayed here for 2 nights as part of our silver wedding celebrations. We left on the morning of our anniversary because we wanted to go somewhere for a special meal that evening which was not possible at the windmill because the restaurant does not open every evening and then subsequently the restaurant was closed because of covid 19. When I booked I asked about getting a taxi to take us to a restaurant but I was told there was no decent cab service in town so we moved on to another hotel. We had a lovely two nights staying here and were made very welcome. We stayed in the Wheat Chamber which was a lovely cosy room which had lovely decor. The bed was huge and very very comfortable. There was a settee, a small table and chairs and a pretend fire which made it look nice. There was a big wardrobe and a sideboard with tea making facilities. There were nice views from the windows and we could also go up to the balcony above us to see the views of the marshes. The shower room was small and a strange shape because the room was round. There wasn’t much space for putting washbags in the shower room. The shower was very efficient and hot and the towels were lovely. Breakfast was served in the room because of covid 19 which was nice but there were a lot of errors, particularly on the second morning. That day I received all the breakfast items that I asked not to have rather than the ones I wanted. The staff were very good though and kept going back and forth to put it right. They were very apologetic but it did mean that things were getting cold while we waited for other items. One evening we had dinner there which the staff arranged with a bespoke dining service. We ordered the food a few weeks in advance and it arrived in a hamper. The quality was good and all the right temperature. We did not want to eat in our room so asked to eat in the lounge. I had the impression there would be lots of people dining here so space might be an issue but we were the only people there so it was very strange. The room was very dark and bing he only diners there wasn’t much atmosphere. We parked OK but it was full. There doesn’t seem to be dedicated parking for hotel guests so I guess it could be busy in the summer. They seemed to meet all the social distancing guidelines very well and we felt safe.It is definitely worth staying in the main windmill as the rooms are interesting and quirky being in the round. I had wanted to stay here for some time and it didn’t disappoint.

Absolutely fabulous place, the room was lovely, the views and welcome amazing and the food delicious - delivered hot and packed ( currently cooked off site) . Absolutely cannot fault any of the food, breakfast or evening meal. It must be so much more complicated due to the COVID restrictions but the staff were all brilliant - particularly Laura and Nishaa (whose first week it was) Thank you so much, we’ll definitely be back x

Great little hotel and self catering cottages in a sleepy Norfolk village. Lovely views of the river and across the marshes to the sea. We stayed in one of the self catering cottages. It was very stylishly converted, comfy bed and a cosy room with pretty much everything you needed. My one complaint would be that the room would have been greatly improved for us with the addition of a comfortable sofa or chairs. The chairs supplied were extremely uncomfortable. The weather was bad and few places were open due to the pandemic so we had to spend the evening in the cottage and one afternoon and we could just not find a way to sit comfortably. Also would have been nice if we could have used the wood burner as I was cold! Otherwise it was friendly and well located and I would recommend.

We were staying at the windmill so experienced breakfasts and one dinner. The first breakfast as well as the buffet items which were excellent I tried the eggs hollandaise. I found the salmon too salty for my taste and the sauce too excessive and rich.On the set dinner menu the amuse bouche was excellent but here again the soup was too rich and creamy. The main course was salmon with potato and sprouting broccoli - just one veg. The dessert was a chocolate brownie with a large dollop of cream. Here again too rich for my taste. As we get older we cannot manage rich food and the restaurant needs to take account of this.

The meal started well when we were greeted and shown to the viewing platform with great views across the marshes. There was a set menu which was ok but nothing special. The smoked prawns only numbered 2-3 and we had already bought some earlier in the day from the local smokery. There was chicken which was well cooked but sat on a bed of what tasted like Heinz’s ‘five beans. Tiramisu lacked some flavour and was again soft so the entire meal lacked textureWe were not given any water until at least half way through the meal. We wanted to order wine as we were within walking distance of our accommodation but we were unable to ask for any and were not offered wine until we had finished our main course by which time we felt it was too late. We felt as though we were forgotten. We ate out in different restaurants locally every night while in the area and this was the meal we were most looking forward to but somehow it failed to deliver on several counts

Fine dining in surreal surroundings is rare, however, at the Cley Windmill Restaurant this happens everyday. This beautiful and historic windmill was used during the war and now boasts the best hotel and restaurant in the area. A very happy waitress will greet you and escort you in to the meeting area whilst you browse at your leisure across a three course menu hand picked by the chef, once you have drinks you will be taken to the windmill balcony for the most amazing views across the North Norfolk coast line and reserve. I lost count how many times I said wow, the views are quite amazing. After drinks we were then served dinner in this beautiful dining room, the food was cooked too perfection, if I had one request, it would possibly be for a more extended menu, but frankly the food was amazing, the wine list is excellent and we had the most amazing time at the Cley Windmill. Super friendly stay and a beautiful memory of an amazing meal, perfect! I cannot wait to revisit.

We had a nice three course meal in the pretty dining room of the windmill whilst staying one night. The menu lists an amuse bouche and three courses. We didn't receive an amuse bouche. There was also no bread offered, or mention of any tea or coffee after the meal. For £32.50 per person it felt really overpriced to just receive three relatively small courses. The menu is also set (bar any alterations for vegetarians etc) which means you can easily end up eating a meal that isn't really to your taste.

The quantity was good. Biscuits and cheese was hardly needed, but it was a celebration. The port was delicious. But - I do prefer an a la carte menu. It is a fixed menu. You can look up what you’ll get on the website, or board outside, or phone and ask. Mashed potato was scheduled for our evening, but my wife prefers new boiled. Had a lovely dinner at the windmill, which made it really special. The location, sunset food, company and service made it on the night. It is a three course set dinner and is inside the windmill, but first you have pre-dinner drinks on the terrace. Inside it seats around 16 people and the tables are all lit by candle lit. First course was Stilton and fig salad, followed by lamb cutlets and for dessert was pannacotta with shortbread. Lovely wine and service and had drinks in the windmill sitting room afterwards. Met some other couples and had a lovely evening. Will return again as we loved the whole experience.

We were looking forward to eating here. They offer a set menu only, which is published a month in advance so you can decide whether to book or not. We liked the sound of the food on offer so booked in. At 7pm we were to assemble in the cosy lounge for pre dinner drinks. Nibbles were provided and it was nice to chat to fellow diners before we were summoned in to eat around 7:30.My husband had preordered a low fat meal, which was confirmed when we arrived. The starter was billed as a goats chees salad with beetroot. I was surprised to see the goats cheese was breadcrumbed and deep fried with no alternative for my husband. It was OK but nothing has been done to it more than deep frying a repurchased unit. We had higher hopes for the main course. Fillet steak with creamy mushroom sauce with sauté potatoes and roasted tomato salad. Nobody in the restaurant was asked how they wanted the steak cooked . Very strange. When my plate of food arrived I was disappointed . The steak was fine, medium rare just as I like it, but the potatoes had been stewing in fat for ages, and there was no tomato salad at all. The chef had thrown a few leaves of rocket on the plate as garnish and that was it. No vegetables or salad to accompany the meal. My husbands steak was too well done for his liking , and again, no alternative offered to the cream sauce or the fatty potatoes. The restaurant. Became quieter and quieter over the evening as the meal progressed. We were certainly starting to feel disappointed. The pudding was billed as poached plums with raspberry coulis and vanilla pod ice cream. The ice cream which was served was certainly not vanilla pod. It tasted of almonds which I hate. Another disappointing course . We would certainly not eat here again. I can cook a better meal than this at home.

The windmill is brilliant and its location stunning - well worth a visit. By contrast its restaurant may be fine for a daytime snack but is not up to fine dining standards. This might not be a problem but for the prices, which are of the fine dining variety. There is nothing wrong with the food but it is home cooking rather than anything more refined. The wine list is tiny and uninspired, the service friendly but basic. This simply doesn't fit what you end up paying.

I imagine the views are spectacular; we’ll certainly be going back in the daytime. It’s a set, three-course, menu which changes daily and is published well in advance on their website. The kitchen will try to accommodate changes if necessary, on our visit a diner was offered salmon as an alternative to steak. The food is classy, well presented, excellent quality and portions just right and accompanied with a good wine list.Service was warm, attentive and prompt.Excellent value for money. The dining room is warm and cosy but, for me, just a little too cramped. It would be impossible to have a conversation without being overheard, except for one table that seemed to be tucked away in an alcove. The quality of your dining experience may depend on the quality of your neighbours – in our case they were charming, but it could be a bit of a lottery. That wouldn’t put me off though and I’d strongly recommend this restaurant.

I was very much looking forward to eating here after reading the reviews, so it's a shame that I was disappointed with the experience . The meal is a set menu with everyone sitting at the same time. I was fine with this but failed to realise that this would be true for each course, so everyone had to wait until the last person in the restaurant had finished eating before their plates were cleared for the next course. The service was very sweet, and there was a check back during the main but aside from that the girls remained behind closed doors in the kitchen, so you had to time ordering another drink carefully. In the end I didn't bother ordering a second glass of wine. The food was very well presented and carefully made, but more like a home kitchen than a restaurant. The main was over salted, I couldn't finish it. There were candles on the tables and music - a mixture of classical and jazz. It was all a bit hushed and stiff. I think I would not have noticed if I was in a couple but on my own I felt quite uncomfortable. Given the set menu nature and the drinks in a lounge with squishy sofas and a slightly dishevelled feel (which I liked) I was surprised it was so formal in the dining room. It was a bit like forced sophistication, very strange. I didn't complain because there was nothing they were really doing wrong - the meal was just not to my taste, other diners were enjoying theirs, and they really were earnest and polite in the service. I left as soon as I could to enjoy the more laid back feel in a local pub. I think this would be good as a couple and to check the menu online before you book, so you know you will enjoy the meal.

We came to Cley Windmill today for a Sunday roast and was pleasantly suprised with the whole experience. Whilst it wasn't immediately clear where the entrance to the restaurant was, once we found it we received a friendly welcome and the unexpected bonus of a tour around the windmill. It would of been great to of been provided with some more information about the history of the building and surrounding location but nonetheless the views were spectacular. Following the tour we were left in a room just off the main restaurant. Some other reviews have referred to this appearance as looking dated but we felt it was perfectly in keeping with the characriatics of the building. To make it better it might of been nice to have some music playing or literature to read about the windmill as it did create an strange atmosphere when other guests started joining us, however it wasn't for long. Once we had chosen our food we were shown to the restaurant which very nice and welcoming and it wasn't long until the food came out which was exceptional. Whilst in our case it wasn't relevant as things were fine, similar to other posts, the waitresses didn't return to ask if everything was ok with the food or if we were fine for drinks etc and it did feel like they were rushing to get everything served. That little but of extra time invested to make us feel at home would of made a big difference. With each course that came the food was exceptional and well presented. There wasn't anything special about the menu, it was simple but well prepared and at £25 for a 3 course meal, we felt was fairly priced. Overall we were very impressed with the day. It would of been great to of been able to extend the afternoon by sitting it the gardens but these were restricted to the residents only (even though none were around). It might of also been worth having some details about the rooms somewhere as we would of been interested in what was available. All in all it was a fantastic find and a thoroughly enjoyable day. We will certainly be coming back.

This venue has accommodation as well as a lovely restaurant. We were there for dinner which has one set menu per day - which is interesting. The staff were able to provide an alternative dish on the day for my wife which we thought was a great touch!Great ambience and location with very good food made for a great evening - so thanks to the Windmill staff for making our wedding anniversary very special!

The restaurant is held in a small intimate room normally used for breakfast. There is a set menu, 3 courses, but it is easy to find out what is on offer, as the menus are set out well in advance. The main course, cod, was excellent, but the almond tart a bit of a disappointment, not much almond flavour. On the whole though good value for money.

We were greeted by a friendly lady who took us into a lovely lounge where we were offered a pre dinner sherry and nibbles. We had bought a Groupon offer, the rest of the diners were residents but we all chatted amiably before dinner. The dining room holds about 16 and is quite intimate. Excellent service and food. The menu is fixed so you need to check online to ensure they are serving something you like. Having said that, the chef will cater for special dietary requirements if warned in advance.

This was somewhere new for us and it didn't disappoint! Did find it difficult to find our way in in the dark as did another couple so we went in the Residents only entrance which took us straight into the dining room! The young waitress then opened another door and showed us into the round lounge area. Here were several guest who were obviously staying, a family of 8 for a 60th birthday and a couple who had got engaged the day before at the mill! We did feel a bit lost though the guests did chat to us the young waitresses did finally bring us the wine list and ask our name which I thought they should have done earlier. When everyone got up and started moving we presumed dinner was served, again an announcement would have been nice for us non-residents! Once seated Cley Windmill ticked all the boxes! The set menu was no surprise as we'd looked online, and it was every bit as good as we had hoped! Fresh warm breadrolls followed by the starter of scallops and chorizo, 8 oz fillet steak with carrots green beans and the best dauphoise potatoes I've ever had! Dessert was lemon tart, again a lovely dish. Hubby had a coffee and I ate his mints! We would love to come back and perhaps stay if a Groupon came up again, if not for a special occasion this is a lovely place.I would have like to see a more senior person checking everyone and everything was ok, the young staff were pleasant but lacked the presence I think this place needs and for the cost of the meal it deserves

We have walked past the windmill so many times, but never eaten there. My husband's 60th birthday seemed the perfect way to try it. On the hottest day of the year, we had a lovely evening. Drinks in the lounge, and the chance to wander round the garden and look out over the marshes from the gallery were a lovely start to the vending. The food and service were good, and we would definitely return.

We walked to Cley from Blakeney to visit the Windmill and the beach and noticed the menu for the candle lit dinners outstide the hotel. The Tuesday menu of Watermelon and feta cheese salad, Seabass on a chorizo and bean stew followed by Wiverton Strawberry Tart sounded very tempting, so booked a table for 2. We where not disapointed. A mix of locals and tourists in the circular lounge for drinks and nibbles before dinner made for a very convivial atmosphere before we where taken in for dinner. Dinner itself was excellent as was the service. But one thing I must mention as in this day and age these things are sadly lacking, even in good restaurants, the cutlery, glasses and table linen where spotless and of very good quality and the table was also laid correctly. To me this makes all the difference. Well done guys, we will be back.

This is an interesting place to eat. The menu is set, although if you advise of food dislikes in advance these are noted. The time is also fixed and all diners eat in one sitting. The restaurant is very small holding about 20 and this could be awkward I think if you were a couple looking for a quiet meal and there was an larger group in, but on the evening we were there it was great. We ate by candlelight and the food was delicious with great flavours and seasoning, quality produce and perfect portion sizes. A fairly early finish as we were last to leave and it was only 9.30.

We enjoyed three courses, Whitebait, Lamb then cheesecake. All were lovely and we could not find fault....the lamb was particularly beautiful.Again like the rooms yes it's expensive but you're in a beautiful windmill on the North Norfolk Coast and not in a restaurant chain where you're eating with 50 other diners!A must try for those that haven't already and want to try something different. We hadn't been to Cley for years and the Windmill has changed hands in that time. You need to book early to get one of their limited tables and the menu is set but the menu diary is displayed outside so you can pick the day you like the look of most ! We were greeted with complimentary sherry by the log fire, taken up to the viewing platform at the top of the windmill then had a beautiful and very satisfying dinner. The food was cooked to perfection. Not cheap but then fine dining isn't and I would still say good value. Our only suggestion is that there could have been a few 'nibbles' with the sherry prior to dinner.......just a thought....

We stayed in the river room for the night which was very picturesque. The evening meal though was very disappointing. I am a meat eater and the main course of rack of lamb was a delicious if simple meal. A very basic tomato soup starter and melting cheesecake for dessert were definitely not what I was expecting for the price however. To make matters worse my partner (who doesn't eat meat) had a fish alternative. What came out of the kitchen was a piece of the next morning's smoked haddock with a poached egg on some undercooked crunchy risotto. She returned the dish only to be given slightly less slightly crunchy risotto. Once again, given the price of the meal and the location of the restaurant and the fact they state how they source local ingredients surely a better fish alternative could have been found. We had the fried breakfast in the morning which had bacon placed at very daring angles on the plate but only one sausage. Overall a lovely part of the coast to visit but a very disappointing dining experience for the price.

We had pre-dinner drinks and nibbles in the lounge then were ushered into the restaurant promptly at 7.30. Potted pork starter which tasted OK but miniscule with couple of slices of sourdough with a few leaves and pickle, main course was salmon risotto which was miniscule again, not much salmon and probably reheated in the microwave as nearly got a facial when I put my fork in! Winter berry crumble was dropped into a bowl rather than nicely presented with a miniscule jug of something disguised as creme anglaise. Overall a very expensive, miniscule, mediocre dinner and definitely our advantage that we were usurped by the shooting party on Saturday night. Luckily I had a couple of biscuits with coffee in our room afterwards and I can understand why some diners went to the pub for further sustenance. This was not a very challenging menu and I could do this at home for a midweek meal. Very disappointing when we were expecting something special. My opinion was that the chef was focussed on the next day's dinner guests and did something simple for us and charged us full price. Should have complained to the manager and had the meal deducted off our bill! So having to go out on Saturday night to eat was preferable although on our return the parking was particularly difficult due to the number of shooting party cars in the car park. Apologies to Chris G and partner for being one of the white heterosexual middle class couples and hope that the service you received wasn't due to someone's small minded bigotry?Think someone should review the expectations of diners for the price being charged then you won't get more disappointing reviews.

We were staying at the windmill for a weekend (I have reviewed the hotel stay separately) I booked a table for the Friday night of our two night stay, went down for dinner at 7.20 to find nowhere left to sit in the lounge, went through to the restaurant and was seated a bit early. First course was advertised as "Potted Pork" what came out was sausage meat with a few herbs served in a small container about the size of an egg cup, a few salad leaves and a very small portion of piccalilli. (The piccalilli was not advertised and as one of us detests mustard it would have been nice to have known about this)Onto the main course which was was advertised as a "Smoked Salmon Risotto Verde" when this was bought to the table I though it was a second starter the portion size was so ridiculously small, if you extracted the smoke salmon from the dish it would not have filled a match box ! The risotto was seriously under cooked, and the "verde" part was a few pea shoots sprinkled on the top ! My partners portion was considerably smaller than mine, I received 6 cherry tomatoes, he got 3 and much less risotto, the whole thing took about two minutes to eat.Desert followed which was advertised as a "winter berry crumble with custard" The "winter" berrys consisted mainly of Strawberries (winter berry ?) with a small portion of crumble. The custard was served in a very small jug between two people, I would say two thimble fulls each and it was gone !The cost price for these very small portions is extremely low and I feel the ownership are maximising profits and providing very poor value for money to the customer.Although we were seated first in the restaurant at every course we were served last, it was obvious from the main course portions that the food must have been running out when ours was served. We have yet to work out why we were served last at every course, surely it couldn't have anything to do with the fact that we are a same sex couple and every other guest was a white heterosexual middle class white couple ?Throughout the meal we were never asked if we had enjoyed the food, if everything was OK or if we needed anything else, the ONLY words spoken to us over the three courses were "Is that finished"We ended up at the George pub down the street for some chips as still very hungry after our meal. The only positive is the manager did deduct the cost of the meal from our final bill after we complained on checking out of the hotel.

We went to the windmill for a wedding anniversary treat, and a treat it was too. The evening was a 'Wine Taster' and the menu was set. It was delicious, as were the selections of wine especially chosen to compliment each course. All of the staff were lovely, extremely polite and attentive and it was a really nice touch to be taken up onto the balcony for a view over the mashes and towards the sunset over Blakeney. We fully agree with Peter F's review, you can ignore the less than favourable reviews, the lounge in the mill was exactly what it should be and totally reflected the Mills past, it was comfortable and cosy (especially with the fire lit)! There was not a rip nor tear in sight, but there were lovely comfortable sofas which all the guests seemed to appreciate. We shall definitely have this on our list for regular visits. This was a very pleasant setting with a prompt 7.30pm start for dinner, once our taxi had negotiated the car park ( far to tight for space ). It was a set menu, we had a pork terrine followed by a seafood platter finishing with a lemon and chocolate combination. All the food was presented very well and tasted fine. It was a warm evening and all the courses were cold other than the new potatoes with the platter, so why the sharp 7.30 start I found I was asking myself. The staff were very attentive and it was interesting to note how they found the plate for the main much easier to handle that the piece of slate the terrine was on ( yes presentation on slate or large pieces of wood can look attractive but plates are far more practical for staff to handle and helps to stop food accidently rolling off. I would defiantly go back but would like to see the chef challenge himself a little more ( this was a very well executed meal but very easy ). It was a very pleasant evening just lacking the wow factor I had hoped for, a top tip would be to arrive at 6.45 to have a pre dinner drink in the lovely lounge which is in the base of the windmill or if it is a nice evening outside with a lovely view over the salt marshes.

The menu is fixed: You know what you will be served before you make a reservation. The food and service were top notch. From appetizer to dessert the dishes were tasty and pleasingly presented. Staying in North Norfolk? Put your trust in the chef and book dinner at the Cley Windmill. There are a couple of (untypically) poor reviews on TripAdvisor; you can ignore them. The sofas are old – who cares? It's an old Norfolk windmill - the sofas should be old and the intimate dining room is comfortable. You have to book in advance? Then book in advance – there are only about 30 covers (we managed to get a table the same day). No background music? Go with someone you want to talk to. What about the single-choice menu? It gives the chef a chance to provide fresh and competitively priced dishes without worrying about waste and the menu changes daily. Read it ahead of time and decide if you want to eat there tonight, tomorrow or the next evening, but eat there you must. We are often disappointed at the £30-£35 a-head bracket but not at the Windmill – the excellent three- course dinner was largely locally sourced, imaginatively prepared and represented very good value for money and although there are one or two eye-wateringly expensive wines on the list there’s still good choice and value around the £20+ mark. The service was polite, intelligent and engaging and before we left our waiter invited our feedback. The food is as good (if not better) than many meals we’ve recently eaten in France at twice the price and if you prefer multiple-choice menus there’s the George at Cley or The Wiverton Bell – they’re both very good. Otherwise trust the chef, make an occasion of it and go to the Windmill. (Just a thought. Perhaps one or two typical menus on the website might be a good idea?).

The dining room seats about 14 people at tables for 2 and 4. Everyone has the same meal. The emphasis is strongly on locally sourced items - for example, soaked fish is delivered every morning at 8 am by the smokers in the hamlet, meat is from local farms, vegetables in season, and so on. There is a good wine list at sensible prices (£16.50 - £25.00). The cosy atmosphere is congenial and informal. Non-residents are welcome but must book in advance (one day). Credit cards accepted.

We came in for Lunch today and want to start off by saying that the location is idyllic, the food is delicious and most of the staff are wonderful. However, our meal was completely bulldozed by one member of staff (don’t know her name, elderly, black hair, heavy makeup). Not only would she not leave us alone for the duration of our meal which was very off putting, she proceeded to try to force feed me mushy peas using a dirty spoon off of the floor. At the end of our meal we were sitting and enjoying our drinks when she then took them from our table, we were considering getting coffees but felt very pressured to leave after such disastrous service. We are honestly embarrassed for you at No 1, that kind of behaviour was not very becoming at all…. What would have been the perfect meal out ended up being a complete nightmare.

Down in Worstead on wee business trip, asked about possibility of lunch nearby and were directed to the White Lady. It was around 14:30 on a Sunday afternoon so expectations weren't too high (would have settled for a sandwich...). Friendly welcome, assured food would be no problem and we're given 3 menus! We're invited to sit anywhere we chose so opted for window seat in dining area to rear. We both opted for Sunday roast topside. Absolutely fantastic. Beef cooked to perfection, awesome roast potatoes and Yorkshire pud, came with glazed chantenay carrots, buttered green beans and zingy red cabbage, jug of lush gravy and topped of with dish of unctuous Cauliflower and cheese (each by the way). Thinking about making the 3 hour drive again just to have that experience again.
