Decidedly average dining experience which makes it harder to justify the price tag. The monkfish curry was bland and oily although the fish was a nice texture. The keema biriyani lacked depth of flavour in both the rice and the meat. It was just mildly spicy with no other definable flavours. The dawat chicken curry was probably the nicest dish but in my sons words 'tasted eggy the more you ate' the side were probably the nicest part. Beetroot roti was great and the king prawns was decent but 15.50£ for 3 prawns is...something. the coconut rice pudding was very coconutty but the texture was more like semolina porridge than rice. Nothing was notably awful but also not a 5* dining experience warranting a 135£ bill for 2 adults and 2 children.

Fabulous meal midweek. I went for the lamb shank which was cooked to perfection while the others had biryanis. Cold beer and Bhindi fry until everyone got there for our annual works reunion. Only 4 of us left (actually bothered to keep in touch) but Clay's looked after us well. Service was attentive but not intrusive. Amazing food. Hope to join you again. Wonderful restaurant! Been there several times and ordered Clay's From Home. Authentic, tasty dishes, finely flavoured. Worth the price. If you can save for a special occasion, it's well worth it. Chicken liver starters are our favourite. They employ young local people as serving staff. Most of them are wonderful, if a little shy. Sometimes have to get their attention for to order another drink, but that's fine.

Clay's was a wonderful experience! A carefully created modern Indian menu that is proud of what it does exceptionally well and doesn't feel the need to litter the pages with too much to choose from (though there is something for everyone!). Every month they highlight a particular area in India with a few dishes and a bit of history - such interesting info and it must take such effort to research and create every month. We were welcomed warmly, seated quickly and the waitress was wonderful - attentive without being intrusive, happy to help and gently efficient. In what are hard economic times their prices are fair and there are no cut corner in the incredible food. The Indrahar blew me away with its layers of flavour, the beetroot roti exceeded expectations and we fell silent while sharing the apricot desert!

What a lovely experience! I grew up in an area where there was an Indian restaurant on every road and as a result end up never going out for Indian cuisine because it was all the same. When a friend suggested Clay's we figured we'd give it a try and what a breath of fresh air it is! The curry is not the "meat in a curry gravy" I remember when growing up. You'll find thing like venison and liver and an explosion of flavours. The menu is marked with allergens (in-store but not online). As gluten free there were so many options for me with no reaction.

Very disappointed. I dined in given all the hype. I ordered two starters and the mixed bread. The aubergine starter was burnt, the okra stater was very small pieces and oversubscribed with crispy fried onions. That's all it tasted of. The food was over salted and the breads weren't roti, as I'm used to. They were more like chapati. At £8 per starter, I expected more and better.

We were looking forward to trying Clays for quite some time since moving to Caversham last year. The flavour of the dishes was great and the location of the restaurant is good. Everything was good until we were finished food and basically ushered out of the restaurant after just 1 hour 40 minutes. We were told by one waitress that the table was needing to be cleared and prepped for the next group “now” despite at least 7/8 4 seater tables like ours being empty in the venue at the same time. We were a little surprised and said we have a table booking for over 2 hours and she repeated the need to clear the table urgently. A second waitress then came along and repeated what waitress one said and we said we will get the bill and will be leaving shortly. Once we paid, the owner/manager then came to our table and said, “Please can I ask that you leave the table and pointed to the bar. We will need to prepare your table now.” All of these interactions were within less than 10 minutes. The feeling of being rushed and their urgent need to get next customers in was not a nice way to be made to feel after spending just under £90. I explained to the owner/manager that on my booking I was informed my table was reserved for us for over 2 hours (see booking confirmation email below - 2 people 2 hours 15 minutes) and he said, “tables for two are only an hour and half sittings.” I then asked, “Why does your booking service say more time?” He then said, “I’m sorry, but you can sit by the bar.” I then said, “I have to be honest with you, it is such a shame to come to a restaurant we were looking forward to come to, as locals for some time, and after food and paying the bill, we are made to feel pushed out. It has not been a positive customer experience for us overall.” He apologised and pointed towards the bar and then walked away which means his apology was disingenuous and he showed no gratitude for us as customers. It left a sour impression for us and as a result, we will not be coming back and will not be recommending this restaurant to our family and friends as the Clay’s team made us feel unwelcome.

Food is good but missing some things one might expect going for a curry (Poppadoms replaced by prawn crackers). Obviously trying to be different as it is an area with a lot of Indian restaurants. Successful not sure really. The biggest issue is the service is dreadful given the price. Pricing is on par with the Spice Merchant in Henley but overall it does not come close. Numerous friends had recommended we try Clays, "It's not a curry house" they all said. We decided to give it a go on the first day of our holidays. After looking at the menu on line I was impressed by the different types of dishes I'd never heard of. We shared starters of pan fried chicken livers (my favourite) and pork belly. Then mains of mutton and cod loin, along with aubergines and rice. The pudding of coconut rice was a bit too sweet for me, but Mrs C. liked it. The serving staff were, with one exception, all youngsters and served with a smile. The quality of all the dishes were superb, it's not cheap, but it's also not a curry house! We'll be back.

Food was authentic and very tasty - my favourite dish was the chicken Biryani. Probably the best biryani I have ever eaten. Although with each dish (in my photo) being around £18-£22, it is expensive for what you get. These portions are really quite smallfor this price. I was also disappointed with the beer selection. No classic Indian beers I enjoy with a curry: Kingfisher, Jaipur, Singha Thai or Samuel Smiths - none of those. The service needs some tightening up. We (2 people) were seated at a table for 12 - when the mistake was realised they moved us to a table for two. Then two (albeit very polite) waitresses asked for our drinks order twice, not realising we had already been served. Following that, red wine (we had not ordered) was brought to our table. The service was a bit of a disjointed fiasco. Wait times for the mains was quick, but slow in bringing us a dessert menu and slow in then asking us if we wanted a dessert. A bit more training and organisation of the polite and hardworking staff would really complement the great food.

Service was great, attentive but not too overbearing. We did have to wait nearly an hour between our starters and main but our server kept us informed. The food was very good but we felt not overly special for the price. There are other local Indian restaurants who offer specialty dishes which are delicious but 2/3 of the price (not to say that they are better but is something to consider). Overall the food was good but feels expensive considering the number of very good local Indian restaurants and we had a long wait.

Poor experience. Not visiting again. Wife was ill and tried to cancel but they wanted to charge. Out of principle we went. Appears they enforce terms and conditions to suit Clays. They wanted to charge to cancel for sickness but were happy to have 2 kids under 10 after 7pm, I guess it makes them money. Also the food was not great and some quantities such as the fish dish for the price is a rip off. Waiting staff polite and attentive but management not so, guessing primary objective is money where bookings online and no walkins so as to get details to charge even if cancelling for a valid reason. Do not waste your money go to the other Indian restaurants in the area. Appreciated the response from Clays but the tone was not appreciated. At no point was I threatening. I wrote a factual account of my experience. Maybe taking such a tone is to deflect from the facts of my review. The restaurant has been open for just over a year and a common issue is value for money. I believe the adverse reviews for various reasons on Clays account for around 20% and a common issue is price as reflected for the fish dish I had, I thought a starter. My wife had a dish where quantity was good. There was a comment that we spent £72. True and the £72 was for two mains, one starter and rice dishes. If my wife and I had enjoyed the visit then our spend would have been twice as much. The two main dishes is a minimum as well so our bill not reflective of enjoying meal but booking conditions. It was a case of eating and going. Had experience been good there would be repeat business but not so Clays welcome to £72. I rather give my money to River Spice locally where feedback, bad, is taken well. Maybe Clays can invest is improving certain things than taking an aggressive approach with response using capitals and taking a tone of entitlement. As if a bad review is to be attacked rather than taking it and looking to improve for the future.

It's still alright but I feel it was better in the previous location and unfortunately the costs involved have had a slow but negative impact on the food. Portions have become a bit stingy, which isn't great when you're trying to share with more than two, and consistency hasn't been great recently. Our go to chicken livers have variously been over cooked or salted. Hopefully it's just a phase as this was the place to go.

We ate at Clay's for the first time last night. The food was great, but overpriced given our overall experience. We booked via the restaurant's website the day before for 9pm - the only available slot. From the moment we were seated we felt rushed to order. Drinks and then food (starters and mains) arrived quickly, but we were only midway through main courses - food still on plates, knives and forks in hand - when a waiter came to ask if we'd finished, and the same thing happened twice more! We weren't offered a dessert menu, and the bill was produced the instant the table was cleared. The staff were clearly keen to clear up at the end of what was obviously a busy night, but why offer a table at 9pm if you don't really want customers at that time? We were out of the door by 10.15. For these prices (the best part of £80 for starter, main and 1 drink each) I want to feel like I'm eating in a restaurant and not grabbing a quick bite in a fast food joint.

The food was average and overpriced. The service was ok but nothing special.

6 of us went here based on the excellent reputation and we weren’t disappointed. We all shared starters and mains so we could try as many dishes as possible- I’ve eaten dishes here I would never order and loved all of it. The cabbage and cauliflower starters were insanely good (& me a meat first kind of guy) as well as the pork belly, and of the 4 different mains, the mutton was really good, but the venison was superb. It’s the depth of flavour these dishes had - some spicy, some lightly spiced but nothing too hot and with lots of other flavours coming through to make the food really interesting. Oh and rhetorical wine selection was great also - as I’ve got older I need to choose - beer or curry (I can no longer do both!!) - and wine is a great compliment to curry if you choose the right wine - which we could!

Not impressed! For what is meant to be one of the best Restaurants in Reading I thought is was well below average let alone one of the best. We arrived slightly early and was told the table was ready (Great). The starters were very dry (Chicken Livers and Pork Belly) and would have benefited from some Raita or similar (Which we asked for and was given, although no cucumber in the raita so it was just yoghurt) The crab Doughnuts were unavailable (No crab I was told). And the chicken livers should have come with a roti or crisp bread, or at least the waitress should have suggested as much as it was a lot of just dry Chicken livers to have on their own! (We saved the majority to go with the main course in the end). The main courses tasted good, but far too expensive for what they were, I had just 4-5 tiny pieces of chicken in my curry and the lamb mince biryani had very little mince at all in it! (And mince is not an expensive ingredient) as for the Prawn Curry, well it was more a question of find a prawn! Still feeling like we could eat more, we ordered two desserts, the Rice Pudding was an odd consistency but edible, the sponge, apricot and custard dessert was in fact just a bowl of custard with two small maraschino cherries in, the sponge and apricot was no where to be seen. It was my birthday and I persuaded my parents to come here, expecting something great as we all love food from the Sub Continent and were all left very disappointed. The service was ok, although a long wait between starters and mains, but the location is very noisy and we couldn't even hear each other across the small table. I certainly won't be making an effort to return as there are far better options in Reading and Caversham for similar food. - Very disappointed!

Amazing food - the 2nd time we've been. A shame they've taken off a couple of the "odder" dishes but for me that removes the authentic element of it. Bring back the goat curry! Everything we've ordered was great. Cabbage pakora - so so tasty! For mains: I would recommend getting a Biryani to share between 2 and getting another main to share. We opted for the Keema Biryani and Dawat chicken + a couple of sides and bread. Around £90-100 for Starters, mains and a pudding to share

Overall, we had a very nice experience here however, the menu is quite limited and in our experience the service was very very slow. The food itself was very tasty and I enjoyed what I ordered. However, others in my party were left feeling that the meal did not live upto their expectations. I’m not sure if I would visit here again as there are many restaurants of similar in the area. However, I would recommend it for others to try.

Plenty of people have written about the food and it is all true. It is really very good. My first choice beer was not available, so I elected to stay safe and order a beer I knew - Loddon Beer which is brewed a couple of miles away. However there was something wrong with it, the taste was more than a bit off and the smell was off too. The waitresses agreed and gave me a different beer. I don't know if by that time I had lost my way with beer or not, but whilst it was better it was not great. My friend was driving, but had a sip of both. His opinion was that the pipes needed cleaning. Would have been a 5 star review otherwise.

Unfortunately never got to try the food. We’ll never go back and all our guests won’t either. One of our guests was violently ill so we couldn’t make our booking. Clays charged me £80. I called them and explained I am unemployed and in dept and my guest had an ongoing illness but they wouldn’t return me the £80. Real shame but they’ve lost 6 customers plus all the people I’ll tell of my experience.

Pros: attentive staff, restaurant size, cutlery, paratha. Cons: prawn starter not appetising unfortunately. Swimming in butter and no other detectable flavour. Chose the chicken dawat based on description and image. Looked nothing like the image. Taste was bland bordering on salty. Go to alot of Indian restaurants and besides the paratha, pilau rice and staff, this wasn't it.

Been coming here for years and it is delicious. The taste of the food is the best Reading has to offer. Service is professional and friendly. Great atmosphere and environment. Only thing I would say is that you pay a lot of money for quite small plate of food in most cases.

We just had a brilliant meal at Clays. The food was superb, really different from standard Indian restaurant style, with distinct flavours, and unusual dishes. Service was spot on and the place had a good buzz. We will definitely be back and we’re already looking forward to trying the rest of the menu. It’s not cheap, but it’s good value for excellent quality food.

The decor was nice and staff friendly and the food was tasty but it was way too expensive for what it was I actually had 4 bits of lamb in my small bowl. I had a better meal at Calico the night after with friends and that was alot better plus good value. Can't say I'd be rushing back.

Clay’s is our favorite date night restaurant, and we were thrilled when they moved to right round the corner from our home. The new space is beautifully decorated and the food is better than ever. It’s not for those looking for a classic ‘British Indian’ meal of tandoori chicken or a korma, because it is truly authentic and a fine dining experience. Having travelled in India I can say this is better than anything I ate there without question. I’d highly recommend coming with a group and ordering a few small and large plates to share so you can try everything! We’ve worked our way through the regular menu and have loved every dish we’ve had.

I dined at Clays two weekends running last month, one with my parents and once with my in-laws. Between the two occasions we managed to eat most of the dishes on the menu, as we chose a starter and main course each and shared. Everything we tried was delicious, but the chicken livers and pork belly really stood out and I would happily have eaten just those. The dishes paired well with the mango beer (which is brewed specially for Clays). Service was attentive, in spite of the restaurant being busy. The new location is lovely - brightly decorated and with a buzzing atmosphere in the evenings. We’ll be back soon!

A very classy nice Indian takeaway in Liphook. A warm welcoming, followed by an excellent service, with a lot of attention to details on order to please you. The service always with a smile and very patient with us. I love Indian food, and have not been able to find a local Indian restaurant that I really like until now. The lamb biryani was delicious, as was the Tandoori chicken. Very excited about this place Conclusion, if you have the opportunity to go eat there, do not hesitate !

I ordered a delivery, it has taken over an hour to be delivered. If you can't handle home delivery don't take the order. Shame really, the restaurant is usually spot on. I doubt I will order a takeaway again. Still use the restaurant but definitely no takeaway.
