Una buena opción si quieres un buen bocadillo mientras evitas las cadenas en la calle principal. Los sándwiches rellenos calientes son geniales en un día frío.

Wasn’t impressed with the service or cleanliness on this visit. My husband and I have eaten here before and have liked the menu choices. On this occasion however, we had no eye contact from our server and just very basic interaction. Baguette served in an olive dish with no napkins. I bought a bottle of water but no glass was offered.

Noticed this cafe in passing on a trip to Canterbury and popped in for lunch. We ordered two bagels with a wide selection of fillings available,a couple of bags of crisps and shared a can of pop. This hearty lunch came to the princely sum of a tenner. If you need lunch in this town, look no further !

Went in on a friend's recommendation. First impressions - a lot of good options - fillings looked fresh and appealing. We had to wait to be served and on both times we were told that the filling wasn't available - alternative options provided though. Felt price of the two sandwiches and two drinks were reasonable. When the food came over I was pleasantly surprised and quality didn't disappoint either.

My partner and I were stuck for lunch ideas. Having visited a lot of other recommended quick lunch stops in town we decided to give this a go. We both went for the flatbread (wrap), I had the chicken and bacon caesar with veg/salad which was very very good! The meal also came with a drink and snack, all for £5 (discount for local workers). Extremely good value, good service and nice little seating area for a quick lunch. Would happily visit again

A very busy area of the town centre, I think this is really a kind of grab a sandwich and go type of place, I was told that the sandwiches are good but I fancied a meal (big mistake) I ordered a Thai green curry which was not particularly expensive, I live half of my life in Thailand, I don't expect to find authentic Thai food in England because it rarely happens but I do expect edible food of a reasonable quality. When the meal came the rice was fine but the "Thai green curry" did not taste anything like any green curry I have ever eaten, it tasted like hot water with a lot of cheap pepper in it, there were a couple of tinned mini sweet corns and some chicken that had been boiled to death, topped off with a good pouring of oil, I tried to eat it but it truly was awful, I returned to the counter only to have a young girl argue with me and tell me that her father lives in Thailand and he had cooked it and "you will never get Thai green curry in England" to which I replied, if you can't provide it, don't put it on the menu, after about 5 minutes of being told I "do not understand" she agreed to change it for a lentil curry the same as my daughter had, when that arrived it was a totally different colour to my daughters dish and it tasted again like hot water with the vegetables boiled until they had absolutely no flavour, we left our food and departed, I think there are many great restaurants in Canterbury but I would advise you to give this one a miss.

Have popped in on a few occasions with my children. The food is healthy and well priced. They have a big variety and options for children, have seen moms with younger kids in there too. You get to choose the filling for your sandwiches, the type of breads etc. Definitely will have health options. They serve great coffees and smoothies, have had their soup as well and they serve good quality. They seating area is a bit shabby, but its relaxed and the food is worth the small 'aesthetic' sacrifice.

26th July 11am I popped into this place and ordered a smoothie. Never been here before although have walked passed a few times. Thought it looked nice. 3 smoothies were advertised they only had the kale one, so I went for that. Whilst I was standing for the few minutes that it took them to make it I started looking around and realised just how filthy this place is. The floors, the walls, food dropped on every service, crumbs and coffee spilt under the coffee machine. Do you ever clean this place? I am not a clean freak by any stretch but I have never seen such a dirty place serving food. I had already paid for my smoothie but after seeing how grubby this place was I wondered how clean the blender would be. The chap passed me the smoothie and I couldn't even face drinking it so threw it in the nearest bin. Whoever runs CJ's, you need to pop your head in there and see what's going wrong.

This used to be the go to place in Canterbury - but seems its standards have dropped, and prices increased. Service was weird - young staff (friendly enough), stopped halfway through making first sandwich (pork baguette) to take me to the till. Charged me £1 more than it should've been. Then asked her colleague to make my Tex-Mex sandwich instead. The "guacamole" in the tex-mex is actually green spread that tastes of nothing and the sandwich is full of hot jalepenos that weren't mentioned anywhere. The pork was totally dry. Neither of us could finish them and wished we'd just gone to Pret (cheaper and much higher quality).

What used to be once one of the best lunch time stops - prices have increased whilst quality and portions have decreased. The baguettes are 90% of the time rock hard, the breakfast "deal" is shocking to what they used to offer, and the feel of the place has really gone down hill. always enjoyed coming here but felt my most recent visit was a let down. No acknowledgement by the 4 staff stood behind the bar chatting, when I finally did get their attention the young guy took my order not listening to what I was saying then , got my order wrong before rung it on the till. I ordered the New Yorker bagel, really nicely prepared with some nice cuts of meat and cooked lovely. When I say down in the far corner I noticed how dirty the floor was crumbs and bread quite visible in a lot of places, greasy table tops and just the sense that it had not been tendered too for a while. The only rationale I could put was that it was coming to the end of the day so they may have been busy. If you are in Canterbury you wont do any wrong than come here to eat. A real Canterbury Staple and been so for many years. - All on one level with plenty of room- Good for families, solo, friends- Can get busy especially in summer months- Always changing the menu- So So variety of Drinks- Ideally located in the middle of town, great if you want to fill up before or after site seeing

CJ's has been around for a while and competes with numerous other 'sandwich' shops in the area. It has a very wide selection of sandwiches and other foods. The service is good and it is popular. The interior has limited seating but it's pretty cool and the glass frontage gives good views of the street outside. There is also seating outside. The price changes if you want to eat in, which other establishments don't charge for and a simple hot roast baguette is £5, The portion size is reasonable but not for that price.

I used to love coming here for lunch, hadn't been for a while but a few weeks ago popped in for lumch with my partner and kids. There were flies all over the food in the fridges so we didn't stay. A few weeks on we came again yesterday Sunday 2nd October, in fairness it was a late lunch, i started queuing at 1.45 and it took until 2.05 for me to be served and there were only 4 or 5 people in front of me. The staff were nice enough but it was a shame they didnt know the ingredients/allergy information for another customer- i felt u comfortable listening to the customers queries and their lack of knowledge in reply. We ordered a kids meal of egg mayo, it was so peppery my partner who adds pepper to his food even said there was too much pepper. So our toddler only ate his banana and we had to buy him another sandwich once we left from elsewhere. I had the club sandwich and again so much pepper in the mayo, it just ruined it. I ate half and my partner ate the rest as it was just too much. We had 2 lattes, they were warm not hot. Just a shame really as it seems to have gone downhill compared to when i would pop in at least once a week a couple years ago

One of us had a cheese and onion sandwich (they didn't use butter and failed to ask if she would have liked butter)... the sandwich was so crumbly and just fell apart, it was ridiculous. And it took ages to be made? The New York Bagel was not great... and my partner's Mexican chicken sandwich took ages to come and had very little guacamole in. One can choose between take away or eat in, there’s no service. We tried the homemade baguettes, some tasted good and some tasted just okay. On the plus side: CJ’s is suited for children, although there’s no special menu for them, so you’ll have to ask staff to make smaller portions. They didn’t really like doing it, even when it wasn’t busy, but at least we got what we ordered. The staff is not really welcoming. A shame that the coffee was a disappointment. Do NOT under any circumstances go here if you are allergic. We ate the falafel alternative and asked specifically if there was any tahini in the dish. The girl at the counter asked what tahini was and we explained that it is sesame based and that our toddlers are allergic to sesame. She said she was unsure of the contents and asked a senior staff manager who assured us that there was no sesame in the dish. We said that there's normally tahini, which is made of sesame, in hummus. The senior staff member said again that there was none so we were assured, ordered and fed our toddlers too. We shouldn't have done that ... after eating a while they started to cry, their faces turned swollen and we were SO lucky that we had brought medicines to help against any allergic reactions.

Went in here while our daughter was at a party in town. We just wanted a quick lunch and didnt fancy a full meal. I asked for a roast pork bagutte as advertised on the board outside only to be told they just had gammon left (turkey was also advertised). This was at 2pm so not really to late in the day to make sure there is enough stock for what people want. My husband had a fajita bagutte. We had a hot chocolate and a latte with our order which came to £14. The food did taste nice and had lovely flavours but the price is a bit much, also costing us more as we ate in. We also noticed the floor had been swept throughout the day and the pile left next to the bin which also had rubbish around it on the floor. This was in the open kitchen for everyone to see. The place could do with a facelift with proper cupboards installed instead of the lovely brown curtains used to hide boxes and boxes of crisps and drinks. The waitress that serves us was pleasant enough for the two words she spoke to us. Not sure we will be coming here again.

I try not to eat at chain places and the friends we were with recommended CJ's for a quick bite for lunch. This was exactly what we were looking for. It offers a good selection of fillings on a few different breads/potato. 3 of the 4 in the group were vegetarian and we were delighted with the available options. It's so refreshing to not just see egg or ploughmans on the menu. Food took a little longer than I expected but still quick considering they're not pre made.A good meal deal is offered. Choice of indoor or outdoor seating, not too close to the tables next to you. Casual set up with sofas added to atmosphere. We tried sitting outside but had an angry wasp trying to steal our food so moved inside. For 1 baguette, 1 toasted wrap plus posh crisps and a can of drink we paid £12.20 which is more than I would usually pay for the equivalent. But as we were being tourists we felt we could treat ourselves and it was very tasty and filling. Would recommend CJ's to friends and family.

Having arrived in Canterbury, we were looking for a nice cafe for a cuppa and a slice of cake. Yearning for somewhere with a bit if character, CJ's stood out from the usual suspects on the high street. The serving area, including a fantastic looking carvery for sandwiches, looked really good. The service was prompt and the staff friendly. Sitting in the cafe area, the decor is far beyond eclectic. It seems to be a random, haphazard collection of styles and themes. Upon closer inspection, it showed its age and gave the cafe a worn-out feel. The drinks arrived, again with friendly service, but the drinks themselves were terrible. The coffee was so-so, but the hot chocolate was a tragedy. The bottom of the glass was filled with cocoa powder that hadn't even been stirred in. The milk was vaguely brown, but didn't really have much of the rich, silky pleasure that a hot chocolate promises. Attempts to mix the chocolate powder into the milk, with the tiny plastic spoon provided, lead to a lumpy glass of milk.A final note, if the cafe felt like chic-less shabby, the bathroom was something else. Leopard print wallpaper hanging off the walls was the main contributing factor to the very drab feel. Someone, somewhere may be able to argue the decor in the cafe adds character -- the only thing the bathroom contributes is an ill at ease feeling.

I go here quite often, there is a good selection of sandwiches, baguettes, jacket potatoes and drinks. In the Winter it's cosy with heat lamps and magazines inside and in the Summer there's a small amount of outdoor seating in the street or you can takeaway. They also accept the tastecard which is great and gives you 50% off, for the quality of the food and service this is really great value!Worth a visit for something quick, tasty and easy!

I feel compelled to write this because, whilst having the option of artisan sandwiches is great, paying £20 for three (with crisps and cans of drink) is not fantastic.

I went to CJ's to grab a baguette and was shocked that it cost me £10.00 for two cans of lilt and two sweet chilli chicken baguettes. I got back to work to tuck in to find there was no butter on the baguette (I wasn't even asked I wanted any) and that the bread was stale. Not impressed. Certainly will not be going back to this place, there are far better and cheaper places to get a great baguette and for a better price!!

Ate in at CJ's for the first time yesterday. It looked appealing from the outside- very casual and with decor that has a sense of originality. There was a choice of baguettes, sandwiches and hot potatoes and you could pick a filling and accompany it with a broad selection of salad and relish. I ordered a prawn cocktail baguette with various salad items and it was truly delicious. The baguette tasted home baked, the salad was crisp and the prawns tasted fresh. Although this place is a little more expensive than other sandwich shops you have to remember that it's not Subway, you are getting fresh homemade quality food. I upgraded my baguette to a meal deal which in total cost £5.50 and included a drink and a snack. The staff were friendly, polite and helpful in offering suggestions for my baguette filling and even offering items which were not on display. I also noted that the staff were very hygienic with frequent use of sanitiser between handling different foods.I would definitely eat here again and would recommend it to all my friends, this place is a little gem.

The sandwiches were tasty but they were just so expensive. For a baguette, drink and crisps to eat in, it was very nearly the price of a lunch meal in a restaurant.

I just got back from CJ's today. I was looking forward to getting my usual as I used to come here a couple times a month. My previous visit was reallu bad (some blonde guy served me and tried to charge me almost £2 more than what I always paid!).I was hoping that my last visit was a one off, so decided to come today. After waiting for this guy's order of 6 sandwiches plus 6 hot chocolates, and his very picky orders had been fulfilled, the elderly woman behind the counter was finally ready to serve me. I asked if there was anymore chicken and chorizo (since I noticed that the guy with the long order took the rest of it) and all she said was "no." There was no apology, no making anymore, she didn't check or anything. I've come to the conclusion that this place has started changing for the worst. Such a shame- it was starting to become my favourite lunch place.

Gets quickly busy. Food ok. Took a while to get our drinks. Took 2 goulash soups (maybe the English way of a goulash, but definitely not the original one...), hot chocolates and a dessert. Cost around £15, which is ok but a bit expensive. Cool atmosphere.

I have been going to CJs for several years and it has been wonderful. However, lots of changes have happened (perhaps new management?). The layout looks awful and there is limited choices available. I had a baguette and could not have my usual chicken mayo because it now came with sweetcorn which I can't stand. There was an abrupt lady in a suit serving me (a suit?!) she didn't seem to want to pay much attention to me. The baguette itself had hardly any filling and the chicken was dry and chewy. The baguette was cold. I will not be going back, which is a shame as it used to be nice!

Deciding against a High Street chain we wandered into CJ'sDeciding on paninis I went up to order. There was a small queue, and as it's all made to order, I queued patiently.Sadly the guy who served me was too busy chatting to a mate to listen & my two paninis - no onion - turned in to two baguettes with tonnes of onion. We left without eating & had very nice panini elsewhere.I am told I don't complain enough when my requests are not fulfilled - on this occasion the worm turned.I'm sure CJ's is too popular to care, but I will tell everyone I know how cross I was.

Ever since I came to complete my degree in Canterbury, CJ's has been the mainstay of lunchtimes in central Canterbury. The shop is forever changing in decor and organisation but the sandwiches remain tasty and varied. At £5 for the meal deal, it's no Boots or Tesco in terms of price but you are paying for the quality.

We popped in after our visit to Canterbury cathedral for baguette and drink. The choice was amazing and the baguette freshly baked (a choice of brown or white). I had the humus and vegetables which was really tasty with the baguette stuffed full. Very reasonable prices and a nice friendly atmosphere.

I have always bought my lunch in town at CJ's. Usually i get a baguette or toasted wrap. The mexican chicken toasted wrap used to be up until recently a decent size. Now i paid over £7.50 for a juice, crisps and wrap only to see the wrap is half the size! This wrap looked like a child portion and had a couple of pieces of pepper in it!!!!!!not impressed. I wanted the wrap to takeaway but the staff walked round with it on a plate and by the time it reached me was luke warm. I asked for it in a bag or wrapped up and it took me 2 minutes to consume. Very disappointing.........

I've been popping in here for the odd baguette since it first opened and it's good to see that it's still going strong. Small cafes and snack bars come and go in Canterbury very often so to see a place with a bit of longevity is pleasantly rare. Simple foods are on offer for a quick lunch...baguettes, jacket spuds, that sort of thing. Well priced and there is a good variety. It does get very busy (on the weekends especially) but don't mistake the snappy service as staff being rude. That's how I like my lunches anyway...no messing, a greeting then service carried out as efficiently as possible.

We visited on a Saturday afternoon for a light snack and a drink. On walking in we were initially impressed by the menu and range on offer. After placing our order we were served our snack at the counter and told our drinks would be brought over. So far so good.Despite there only being a few other customers, it was hard to find anywhere to sit as all the tables were piled with dirty plates and cups. After moving a few cups we settled in and began to eat. After taking one bite of my roasted veg and pesto panini I was aware of another, less appetising addition to my meal. Smeared across the bottom of the panini was some tuna. I am a strict vegetarian so this was particularly horrible to find. No sign of our drinks yet either.I immediately took it back to the counter to ask why this had happened. The reply was that "it must have come from the chopping board" as the girl pointed to a board covered in all manner of food scraps. Still no drinks.I remarked that they weren't following basic food hygiene practices and was sternly told there was no need to be rude. I was made to feel like I was in the wrong for politely complaining about their poor service. I requested a full refund and left just as the other assistant made a move to start preparing our drinks. This café is staffed by young people with no apparent management, who have no interest in providing a service, keeping the premises clean or following basic food preparation rules. I got a sense they were just waiting to finish for the day.I always support the independent business over the chain, but on this occasion the mediocre service and just-about-adequate panini eaten in Costa over the road felt like a comforting experience after a visit to CJ's.

The hot turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce baguette is a must for us .. also tempted this last visit by the gingerbread latte .. oh and we especially love sitting on the sofas at the back if you can get one.. surrounded by little artifacts and interesting finds.. don't think I will tell you where it is though otherwise we'll never get a seat!

There's a few places in Canterbury that offer a quick take-out option for a lunchtime sandwich, but none as consistent as CJ's.There's bucket loads of variety, huge scope for customisation if that's your thing, and efficient, quick service. Can't say much more than that.If I have time I'll sometimes have a sit down in the small but comfortable seating area, especially if I've opted for one of the ever-changing soup / pasta options, so it's not just your 'pay up and get out' venue.Recently they've latched onto the 'vintage' scene so you'll find plenty of mismatched furniture and art-college micro-exhibitions if that's your bag but it's not overpowering or vintage for the sake of it so anyone will feel right at home. Luckily the ingredients are far more fresh than some of the decor which is all that matters to me from this kind of establishment.Been going here for years and I will continue to do so all being well! Highly rated - give it a go!
