City Tavern in Newcastle upon Tyne

Not good. Will not be returning. Waited almost 40mins before I had to chase food up to then be faced with the Chicken Burger which consists of a lot of grease or oil in the batter and zero taste. The chips were quite nice though. Nachos and Chilli, not great no flavour other than the sharp embrace of spice now and then. Chicken skewers, over spiced and again not a great amount flavour.

Great staff and friendly employees who look after your with pleasure good beer and good food recommend this pub anytime

Had a table booked here prior to a gig. Good was delicious, very well kept inside. Great decor. Staff warm and friendly, felt right at home.

Took my daughter for Sunday lunch, opted for the pork with home made apple sauce & crackling got neither. Told the lady who served us she said she'd inform chef, no apology. Not the cheapest lunch & definitely won't be back

Great menu for Coeliacs, staff very knowledgeable and aware of risk of cross contamination. Food was lovely, will definitely visit again.

Been frequenting this place for the last 18 years. Always a friendly atmosphere, very chilled out with plenty seats. Very well decorated and food is delicious. Great variety of drinks and the service is always wonderful.

Fab little pub in the middle of Newcastle. Really great atmosphere, good selection of beers on tap and a decent lunch menu. Friendly staff, didn’t catch his name but Irish guy on the bar was lovely. Dogs are allowed and loved by everyone so don’t go here if you aren’t a dog lover.🐶 Worth a visit for your lunch if you are after a more traditional type thing. Can’t speak for what it’s like at night time.

Good choice of beers but one was off and should not have been sold - they did change it without question.

Just been here this evening and felt the need to write a review. I’ve lived in Newcastle for years but this was my first visit here. Lovely atmosphere and staff very friendly. Food was really good, tasty and hot. Chips were amazing!! I’ll be back!

Admittedly it was just past ten o’clock but the service was a bit slow. Lots of hollandaise source on the eggs Benedict.

Went for food last night as previously it was lovely. Food was awful I had fish and chips. The fish was swimming in grease absolutely dripping. The chips were soggy and greasy too. Wont be back, thinking it must be new management since last visit as menu was different too

This has long been a favourite pub of mine & the current version is great with a good selection of beer. My only gripe is that the beer is pricey.

Bierra Moretti is £6 and can be hit a miss with taste sometimes because last couple of times tasted funny, past working behind a bar this experience is either end or start of barrel... however I love that Laurel and Harry on the TV constantly, food ok,

One of the nicer pubs in Newcastle, good selection of cask ale and other beers. Dog friendly and seems popular with dog owners. Not had food here yet but menu looks good.

This place is terrific. The staff were so very welcoming and loved our pup. The food, atmosphere etc was brilliant. Tasteful decor, booths and sports if you want it. Tasteful place. Dogs get water and treats. They make a fuss. The young ladies that work here obviously love their work. The gentleman servers couldn't do enough for you, especially one with the accent. We spent a lot of time here whilst visiting our daughter. Great place, couldn't fault it at all......thank you so very much!

I really liked the location and the atmosphere and the staff was lovely. I'm sure I'll go there again many times! I didn't have food though, so can't comment on that yet.

Popped for a meal before theatre in Jan'24. Burgers were really tasty, staff were lovely and really helpful. Quite noisy but it was a weekend early evening. I'd recommend booking a table, as very limited empty seating and often a wait.

Called in before the Sarah Milican gig, excellent food with smiling service from Kimi.

Wow, why haven't I ever been here before. Great pub and eatery in the middle of Newcastle. real home cooked food and an array of beverages alcoholic and non alcoholic. Plenty of choice for meat eaters and vegan options. Portions huge!! Staff were lovely and friendly, atmosphere was great too. Decor was fab, so well done. Definitely recommend to anyone. Friend had booked upstairs for a funeral. Not all of upstairs was private to us. Food was supposed to be served on arrival. Had to ask as they forgot. Not impressed as she paid alot of money and was a regular customer

Worst place to eat in Newcastle. My partner has a peanut allergy and they severed peanuts with her food so we had to send it back and they still made us pay for it. Also I asked for vegan currywurst skins and I got the normal ones. Staff was rude and very incompetent, never coming back.

Pub food/Hearty meals, lots of gluten free options and celiac safe, portions were a good size and left absolutely stuffed, and the food was really tasty, but because it’s so popular after a busy lunch rush they were limited on their menu in the evening and then the kitchen closed before we could order dessert but they didn’t warn us, however the staff were friendly and the service was quick, the venue had a classic pub vibe to it with a mix of classic pub food as well as different types of dishes, and the atmosphere was very lively. But it was a bit pricy to me - £15 for fish and chips; went during restaurant week and was supposed to be £20 for a main and dessert, yet we didn’t even get the dessert due to the kitchen closing.

Great atmosphere and lovely food. Staff were really friendly and helpful. Even though the pub was full we were served quickly. Fish pie is so tasty and full of lots of prawns and different fish. Good portion size. Sticky toffee pudding was fabulous and came with strawberries, blueberries and ice cream.

Lovely pub . Great atmosphere. Love the buzz around the place . Hopefully on my next visit I will try the food from the great selection.

Had my parents visit Newcastle so went here for food. The food was excellent, service even better. We had booked a table for dinner, came early and was already prepared. Had table service for food and drinks for the entire night. The staff were lovely, and felt very welcoming.

I ordered the wrong drink. They changed it for me no question. The bar maid was very friendly and easy to approach. The pint was nice

Manager speaks down to workers as if he's some sort of higher being, disrespectful to hard working and lovely bar and waiting staff. Intimidating workers on the job is so beyond me...

Friendly and welcoming staff, not so sure about management… No beer! What sort of pub doesn’t have any beer?! Would sooner recommend the Spoons down the road, not sure we will be returning here.

Had a fabulous lunch with the hubby, great way to end a days shopping . Proper pub as if it's in the country side , you do not get that in a Town center in this day and age .We will definitely be going again. Well done !

Nice decor but food was average at best for the price and service wasn't great, partially due to the numbers in the place but the meal also took over an hour to come.

Our favourite haunt before and after going to city hall for a gig we always grab a couple of cocktails and a snack. We had a ‘side’ of pigs in blankets which was easily enough for both of us and it came with a pot of gravy for dipping. This time we decided on an espresso martini and a pint of Murphy’s (quite hard to find) The pub itself is stunning, everyone we come in we find something else hidden away. 100% recommend.

Well what a nice wee find this was and it was great that it was dog friendly too as wee had our dog with us. Definitely recommend this place , the staff are amazing the bearded Irish guy behind the bar went over and beyond for me and my friends. We all had the turkey dinner and the pigs in blankets with the gravy was unreal! Next trip back to Newcastle this will be my first stop If ur visiting Newcastle next few weeks pop in and get the Xmas menu It’s off The beaten track but worth the visitb

This is a great lub ably run by Tom and his excellent staff. Quirky place in a nice way and dog friendly good menu. 8 of us had the Christmas Menu just go with an appetite 😄

I was sitting upstairs in the bar area opposite a group of 3 ladies when a 'manager' came upstairs and said that we shouldn't be there, as there was a private function commencing shortly, and we had 10mins - this was said at 16:40. This was contrary to a sign saying the room was booked from 17:30 He said this in a rude and aggressive manner, which was totally uncalled for. So 1 of the ladies went to complain about his unacceptable behaviour. But unfortunately, he is the Manager of the bar and denied any wrongdoing. He is also a Brand Ambassador for the company, which is absolutely amazing considering his attitude. So I went to complain. Unfortunately, his attitude was: If I didn't like it I can leave. He didn't care that he was rude or aggressive. This person is not what you would consider manager material in any shape or form. It appears to me that he is probably a bully, because most people in this situation would no doubt apologise and blame pressures of work or whatever for his outburst. Needless to say we won't be going back. And, I was there looking for a potential place to bring 8 - 10 work colleagues on a promotion celebration.

Lunch and drinks with friends. We are 3 retired NHS nurses We meet weekly for lunch and drinks. We are thoroughly shocked and mortified with the behaviour witnessed today. Bar staff treated us with respect and patience. However Management was aggressive and rude. Despite being seated from 13.30 forced to move seats 3 times due to table reservations. This was implemented an hour before reservation expected. We dine and drink here weekly. Never again. The manager himself attended us each time. His actions and language towards 3 retired ladies was threatening demeaning and abusive. Don't take your mum, aunt gran inlaw or anyone that may be vulnerable, as the manager is abusive, aggressive and intimidating to women

They had no 0% lager..none, nil, nada! The only 0% ‘drink’ they did have was 330ml cans of IPA for £5.95 …yes, read that correctly. £5.95! The same can retails in Sainsbury’s for £1.50. We weren’t told the price before buying & just about had a coronary at the bill. Absolute puss-take! And with the extortionate price of that drink they need to spend some of the profit on sprucing up the ladies toilet…shabby state of them.

Food was great, staff a bit confused about what menu was in use and pricing and a couple of things on the menu weren’t available but would definitely visit again.

A genuinely brilliant pub which we found on our trip to Newcastle. We're now really wishing that it was more local to us. It's dog friendly and they even thought to bring him a bowl of water and a dog chew along with our food. The food was brilliant; if you're coming around Christmas time then we would recommend the one-pot pie. The staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming. Clean, cosy and just a really pleasant meal.

Walked in, looked great and relaxed. Went to sit at a table and realised it was reserved however a member of staff assured me it was OK to sit there as it wasn't reserved until later. After about 5 minutes another staff member came over, assuming a manager of some sort as no uniform and very unpolitely told us to move. We said that we had been told we could sit there and were told no move now and walked away when we questioned this. Very rude tone and loud about it to the fact other customers then looked over. There was no need for rudeness and as visitors to the city would recommend other tourists avoid this. And low and behold a phone call was made and the people for the table arrived 20 mons after the booking who appeared to be his family.

Very poor service,heard manager swearing just after we entered,my husband and me could not believe what we were hearing from his foul mouth,if thats how you talk to customers you do not deserve to be in business.Vile man never again.

Ordered two pork Sunday lunches with crackling. There was no cracking and no explanation, the meat portion was on the small side, apart from half a carrot the plate was filled with loads of potato and the Yorkshire pudding. There was a separate bowl of cabbage, leek and green beans but all were under-cooked so we left most of it.

Great bar, had a great espresso martini. Great range of spirits, including some unusual ones.

On the outside it looks lovely, same goes for the inside. Didn't think the staff was overly friendly. Ordered drink and food. Thought the food took ages coming, I even chased it up. Food was pricey but tasted nice, Although don't think you got great amount. Decor nice and it was nice and clean. Womens toilet were upstairs while gents were downstairs. Has baby changing facilities and accessible toilet in same place but I never saw accessible entrance.they were clean and tidy They have child's highchair. They also have a beer garden and little seating area outside to the front building.

Popped in on way home nice little place as always first time we’ve ordered food though. Issues with the payments slowed things down as the staff had to wave the card machine in the air but other than that it was lovely

Booked for lunch, mentioned we'd have a big puppy with us and would like a table with space (so the other diners wouldn't get annoyed by the big lump!) Staff accomodated us perfectly – nice table in the corner, bowl of water and lots of space for the pup, very patient when he got a little jumpy as food was carried over (ordering steak was a bold move of us, to be fair!) A fair few diners, so we weren't too fussed about the slight wait for our meals, but the staff came over without prompt to apologise and offer a round of drinks, which was very kind of them. Checked in on us plenty, and the food was delicious. Thai fish cakes are lovely and fresh, dirty fries were phenomenal, and the steak was cooked to perfection. Will definitely be back!

Very disappointed with the fish and chips I had today . Fish was very greasy , skin on fish , so not much fish ,chips were like big soggy potatoes dipped in grease . And the Pea we’re cold . Only thing worth having was the tarter sauce .

Great atmosphere, not too busy for a Saturday night, managed to get a seat caught the tail end of the rugby, had a pint of snakebite before heading off somewhere else after a visit to the City Hall.

Great service and atmosphere. Nice selection of various ales, local and international as well as a lovely house cash lager. Vast gin assortment and great price point. Worth a stop. Did not eat there but the food going out both looked and smelled delicious. Will try the food next time.

we found this amazing pub when we were walking through newcastle ,we got a lovely warm welcome our dog got a bigger welcome and a free treat ,we had the house hamburger ,it was excellent ,the following night we had the fish and chips ,best fish and chips i have had in a long time ,all the staff we met were very friendly and help full great pub to sit and chill ,thanks to all the staff for making our break at newcastle enjoyable

Had the steak and ale pie. It was lovely, the lass behind the bar was really nice and pleasant. Nice place to eat and had a nice pint of Cruzchampo would recommend the Tavern ,it's a canny place.

We had a drink in this old pub, Rose wine a bit expensive but probably because it's right next to main shopping centre. Nice atmosphere with booths.

1st time I've given less than 4 stars for anything here. Generally have a good experience but today came in with my boyfriend for Sunday lunch. Both ordered the same - pork with crackling and apple sauce, his plate had almost twice the amount of pork as mine, he had the butternut squash mash (as on menu), mine did not, and neither of us had crackling or apple sauce, food not overly hot either. There was only one lad serving tables with food so he was rushed and didn't get the opportunity to ask if all was ok, would have felt bad chasing after him to comment on our meal. We will come back because previously our food, drinks, service and atmosphere has been great, but sadly disappointing today.

Food is not cheap, the dark haired lady served me, not very friendly. Do not have the veggie roast, it was disgusting, it was cold and took over 30mins to come. It was all cold including the plate, it wasn't a nutroast it was some soya mince, the plate was cold and the food was cold for 13.95 don't bother. My boyfriend liked his veggie fish and chips and the portion was massive.

Cosy atmosphere, great selection of bar games, family friendly. Lots of nooks and crannies to explore!

POSITIVES: Nice old building full of character, good selection of drinks and the food menu looks appealing. NEGATIVES: The big plastic screens on the bar are awkward, cumbersome and considerably hinder communication. Drinks are very expensive and the bar service has been PAINFULLY SLOW the last few times I've been in (only one person serving).

Please do not come here if you are expecting a friendly, vibrant atmosphere, we came on a NUFC match-day and the staff were awful, no respect and a dreadful lack of effort and attitude throughout just ignoring customers and not caring at all treating a long line of patient people as if they are their worst enemy, card machine was also broken and overall seems to be very mis-managed and poorly ran compared to nearly every other bar/pub in the city centre, a lot of other more FRIENDLY pubs to go to for sure, needs a full review and staff to be re-hired

Booked a table for Sunday lunch. Shown to our table and within a few minutes a lady came over to take out drinks order. Pub has a very good selection of craft 🍺. We both ordered Sunday roast beef which arrived very quickly, everything on our plates was cooked to perfection lovely meal very good atmosphere will definitely be returning

The City Tavern is a hidden gem, albeit low lighting, it is a safe and welcoming environment for ladies who lunch. The decor has quaint hanging lights, wooden floor and tables, with high stools and lovely comfortable sofas, with televisions showing old Laurel and Hardy...

This place is a hidden gem. It's beside Primark and looks like a small pub. Inside is like a TARDIS it has wee nooks and crannies, bar upstairs outside "garden" with movies on show. Great selection of beers, food was excellent, staff very friendly. It's very dog friendly too.
